      I have used my metal zone for years with my practice amp and it sounds great every time with the boss sample settings. In using it on my regular rig, this pedal pushes a tube amp extremely hard and just the slightest turn of a knob can make it go from great to crap. Also, I have seen them used in a tube amps effects loop with excellent results.

    The real danger of the metal zone is that it's way too easy to scoop out the mids while boosting the lows and highs, which tends to sound pretty good *in isolation* but often causes the guitar to compete with other instruments in a band and fade into the background.

    For best results, turn up the LOW FREQ and leave everything else at neutral with slight adjustments. This pedal is WAY too powerful lol. Also, if you would read the bloody instruction manual before doing a demonstration, the MID FREQ outside nob specifies which middle frequency you want to adjust, and then the inside nob is to boost or cut it. To everyone talking about this FX loop nonsense, again the instruction manual doesn't mention anything other than "Guitar-->MT2-->Amp".

    I have one and I like it. It took a lot of tweaking to get a tone I liked as the knobs are not the easiest to work with. The highs are very prickly with this pedal, so I always keep that knob well below noon. Also, increasing the mids too much makes it sound really muddy, so I keep those dialed back as well.

    I fought with this peddle for a long time before I found it's secret.
    Plugged into the front end of your amp, it soundly sucks. But if you plug it into the return of your effects loop, it essentially replaces the tone stack and preamp of your amp. Used in this way, the result is a well ballanced and divinely useable setup.
    It's the only way to get it to work well.

Don't recall a whole lot beyond that, except that I used to put the low up as a personal preference. Hearing it was so poorly regarded all these years later was something of a surprise. Maybe it wasn't as good as I recall, or maybe tastes for tone have changed. So I’m new and for my first pedal I got a danelectro FAB distortion pedal and I know they’re cheap but i think it sounds terrible I feel like the gain on the map distorts as much and better sound than the pedal does. Is it just a bad pedal or do I have to have a certain kind of amp to even use a pedal? I’m using a Roland micro cube which I heard good things about can I not use pedals with it guys or is it just a terrible distortion pedal ?

    I always like to operate with my controls set to the knee of the curve, where my playing has a bit more effect. I've looked at so many pedals where the knee of the curve is set at 1 or 2 so that when you turn it higher it has little further effect. I prefer the knee of the curve to be around 7.

  • @joshbonds3599

    I blend a distortion pedal with the gain channel of my amp. I use the amp's gain for most of the distortion and the pedal is used to alter the sound beyond what the amp alone can achieve. I set the pedal's gain low and the level high. I don't scoop the mids. Typical pedals that I use are the Marshall JH-1 Jackhammer, Behringer OD300, Boss DS-1, Metal Zone modeled effect on an RP500 patch, and recently the Behringer HM300 clone of the Boss HM-2. I'm basically utilizing distortion pedals in the manner as most people would use an overdrive like a Tube Screamer. I also really like overdrives but distortions can easily give me a more demented tone.

    • @mosneedly3751
      @mosneedly3751 7 лет назад +1

      Didds if you use the Tube Screamer 808 just to give volume to the input, not overdrive, and crank up the gain stages and the presence on the Marshall you end up with super tight compression and articulate drive. You can add a tiny amount of delay and a volume wah in the effects loop to give more drive and keep the amp from blowing your ear drums. My stacks are v-30s. You end up with Dave Mustaine's peaces sells tone, before his spider valve phase, Gary holt formerly of exodus and now hanneman replacement for slayer has a similar rig, Kerry kings rig is similar as well. I like 80's thrash tone so it's what I know. A lot of it is in the pups and the tuning as well...

    Bought this pedal, sold it out of peer pressure. Tried tons of more expensive pedals, went back to Metal Zone. Sold it again and ended up with it as my go-to distortion pedal. The more my musical taste got refined, the more I needed the pedal's nature, of being versatile or tweakable. Beats all the rest, hands down. Use it on an amp with tons of clean headroom and you just might learn to see its potential for tone. :)

  • @autocrow
    @autocrow 7 лет назад +26

    Ouch, lol. It's not a bad pedal. It does exactly what it claims to do. Only good for certain songs. Great for songs like "War Pigs". You can get some gnarly feedback even at low volumes. It takes a bit of fussing around to get it where you want it, and you have to like the heavy metal sound. I spend most of my time on my yellow SD-1 overdrive pedal, but when I want some really nasty distortion, I use the MT-2!

    A friend of mine is trying to get more metal sounds and this pedal sounds like it'll fit the bill. I'm not into metal but this pedal sounds like it might provide a nice "Link Wray" tone when stacked with a reverb pedal (I have an Boss RV 6), given this pedal's "runaway chainsaw" like tones. Like others have said in the comments, it just needs to be used properly.

  • @gmf2112

    I had one of these a few years back, but I couldn't get it to sound all that great. Seemed to make my tone weak. But...I did not have a tube amp at the time, and i think that could have made a big difference. With a solid state, you could crank the amp up till your ears almost bleed, but your tone still seemed like it wouldn't cut thru the mix when playing with a band. I'm not sure where the pedal went. I probably have it somewhere, and if I find it, I'll try it with my tube amp.
