    I replaced the front driveshaft in my 2006 X3. It was making one heck of a noise so it was pretty easy to diagnose. I’m not super technical as far as being a mechanic but it was a pretty simple fix for around $100. Like you said, if you feel comfortable doing it, it is a simple job.

    Helpful vid with the X3 on the lift and you are getting an excellent underside view of rear driveline. Regards!

    I have replaced the rear and front drive shaft . At this point , I don't even know what the problem was that indicated why I needed to replace, but all I know is that after it was replaced, there is a vibration after about 60mph until about 80nph. By vibration, I mean a high pitched sound and a fine vibration. When accelerating or maintaining speed, the sound persists , but when I let off the gas pedal, it immediately stops, but then starts the noise again when I give it any throttle at all.
    I am thinking it could be a balancing issue, maybe faulty part, or --- I don't know. The thing that I can't understand is why it stops when I let off the gas

    • @towuniverse2443
      @towuniverse2443  2 года назад

      Wheel bearings due go bad on these cars. If you turn your wheel at highway speed and the pitch of the sound changes its front wheel bearing. You can also put the car on a lift and let the wheels spin in gear and listen with a stethoscope

    I have the 525Xi. I can feel the vibration during driving. When I am in drive, the vibration is greatly reduced but then I left off the gas there is certainly something is wrong. After viewing this video, I think it is the drive shaft.

    On mine the rear u joint caps blew out causing the drive shaft to fall out however thoes u joints are actually replaceable and are sold with a drive shaft repair kit which comes with center barring and what not however you can just pay for the u joint only if u wish you do not need to buy a whole new drive shaft if you dont want to the u joint is only 33bucks if you call a parts store and ask only for the u joint then they get confused because they cant find it that way you have to tell them to look up the drive shaft repair kit and just order the u joint from there it is a myth that the u joints arnt replacable they are very much replacable ppl just dont kniw how to find them at a parts store..

    I had the same issue on the front and then shortly after on the back drive shaft.
    I knew my rear drive shaft was done because when inwas shift into reverse to leave my driveway it would make a loud "clink!" Noise.
    I paid 275 for the driveshaft and my private mechanic put it in for 75$

      i have this exact problem and it’s been an issue for many months. i did not realize it could be the driveshaft. soon i am replacing the rear dif so i will inspect the driveshaft while i’m down there. when the front was replaced i actually found an A1 Cardone one for $200 on Rock Auto and its been working perfectly for something like 22k miles so far.

      Madroon thanks for the reply. i will try to get it done soon. i’m like the 6th owner of this car and it was not maintained at all. i’ve practically been restoring it (put close to $10k into this car i bought for $3000). trying to do most of the work myself and it’s very time consuming. the rear dif has to be replaced next and even though i’ll be down there anyways, i don’t think i’ll have enough time to also go and replace the driveshaft. i dont want to risk running out of time because i would definitely need to finish it the same day. but i will definitely focus on replacing that driveshaft next.

      Usually on German cars this type of vibration is caused by a failed carrier bearing (center support bearing) for the rear drive shaft. It's a wise idea to replace the center support bearing and the flex discs (Guibo bushings) all at the same time.
