Great discussion, as always. As a 76 year old American living in Kherson, Ukraine, throughout the war, I try to follow things closely and this is one of the top five channels that I watch. The big take away for me is to immediately use the $300B in frozen Russian assets to buy unrestricted, long range, precision weapons for Ukraine. One other point, it is said that the Russian people have an enormous capacity to endure pain. I can tell you, living here in Kherson, on or behind the front line for nearly three years, Ukrainians are rather resilient also. Again, great discussion. Keep up the good work.

Precisely! Now that the EU can not trust the USA to help, the EU must send the oligarchs and minigarchs a message.
“You have a choice Putin or your assets.
You have until January 1st to act, after that all your frozen assets will be used for longe range missiles targeting you.”
Or a more diplomatic version of the above😉
As we all know when the backers of war stop backing the war, the war stops.

AS A RED NECK AMERICAN,YOU,do realise that the $300 Billion,IS RUSSIAN SOVEREIGN MONEY.To make this more EASILY CONSUMABLE,for YOU,is that the money belongs TO ORDINARY RUSSIANS.And " GENIUSES " as YOUR GOOD SELF,state/think that the bricks countries,ARE PLOTTING TO TAKE DOWN THE US.SANCTIONS " AMERICANS' MALE VIAGRA" are the first steps,OF THIS SCHEME.Why should anyone,FREELY want to join YOUR ECONOMICAL POLE,with the risk,of that land,TO HAVE THEIR MONEY STOLEN.Had I been AMERICAN,I would not get TOO COMFORTABLE IN UKRAINE.

Stephanie Baker was a very interesting acquaintance to make. Clearly she has a deep knowledge of sanctions against Russia. It is hard to overestimate the importance of her work in today's world. I hope her wisdom comes to a broad use in the future.

When talking about sanctions, it took Americans four years of constant bombarding German industry and it took four years to break Milošević. Russia does have far larger resources, but not limitless. It is only matter of persistence and political will not to enter the foul agreements with Russia. And yes, Russian money in foreign banks does not fall under category of "bank guarantees", because Putin himself broke and is mocking all guarantees, very much like Milošević, who ironically was a banker.

    • @ThomasMunich-f1k

No on doubts Russian resources. Russia's problem is shortage in capabilities. That is the bottleneck.

An interesting discussion, but since when was it incumbent on the West to aid Russia in the 1990s. Russia was a mafia state before 1991, it was a mafia state before Putin, and it is a mafia state today, admittedly with a different don.
Provided Europe is prepared to step up, Ukraine can survive without US military assistance, but Trump undermining the sanctions regime will put Putin in a much stronger position. On the other hand, a crash in the oil price as cracks in OPEC appear, would badly hurt Putin’s ability to continue to fund the war. And then there is question of what will China do if the threat of secondary sanctions is lifted. Uncertain times indeed.

Just saw this and can't watch the video just yet.
But I'm inspired to say this:
I hope it's something that can be accomplished within the next 8 or 9 weeks.
Trump seems likely to be ready to start removing sanctions almost as soon as he steps foot in the Oval Office.

Ukrainian hits on Russian factories and oil refineries are continuing, though. And there are still British and European sanctions. It's hard to keep adding new ones because of Orban, but the existing ones aren't going anywhere. This EU leadership will be there 3,5 more years.

We can expect Trump to start engineering the reduction of russian sanction from day one of his presidency. The reason being that it's one of Putin's highest priorities. It will form part of Trump's policy of making Russia great again. It's important that the free western media track Trump's policies towards Russia and highlight any pattern that develops.

True but sadly much of the free western media was infiltrated long ago by Russia which is why most news reports mention Russia 1st or spread FUD (fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) about Ukraine's ability to win... and even fewer still mention Ukraine's strengths and achievements given Russia's completely unfair advantage of being able to strike deep into Ukraine.

    • @SiliconCurtain
      @SiliconCurtain  11 дней назад

No. Yeltsin was supported by the west to help him get re-elected. We send PR and media people over to help him hack the election. In hindsight, we should have let him lose. The communists would have been voted back, leading to a period of political flux, like Ukraine had. A series of changes in government and maybe democratic revolutions. But Russian civic society would have grown stronger as a result. In the pursuit of ‘stability’ in Russia, we helped the return of autocracy.

The key to measuring Russian Prosperity and Economic Strength is something altogether less financial. It's the Russian Women's Fertility Rate.
According to U.N. projections, Russia’s population of around 146 million could shrink by 20 million people by the end of the century, with worst-case estimates predicting a dramatic decline of nearly 60 million people.
A 2024 U.N. report on demographic trends around the world puts Russia’s current fertility rate at 1.45 children per woman - well below the 2.1 needed to maintain population levels. According to the report, the country’s population has already peaked and is projected to decline, with estimates suggesting it could drop to 125-130 million by 2100.
Keep in mind Russia is a very large physical space inhabited by many nation groups and ethnicities. I would argue that much of Western Russia, the European Russia is experiencing a whole shift in population and that trend is not likely to change given that People are not able to have large families on subsistence wages. Women's propensity to have their first child often is delayed by several years due to poor economic and social conditions
One does not have to look far to see another Demographic Time Bomb ticking in China too. Many young women see their aspirations as completely different from that of their parents. The apartment market collapse and the draconian response to Covid-19 and taught Women especially to completely distrust the CCP and it's policies. Most women now are very content to live the single life, to have enough money just to afford a very small flat away from their parents, and to avoid men and instead have a cluster of like minded women that they share their new found "freedom" in a Totalitarian Dictatorship of a country.
Unless Russia forces fertilization onto women, Russian women like their Chinese counterparts will NOT succumb to the dogma and propaganda of their self centered governments.
I welcome the demographic declines. I honestly have to ask if the world would not be a better, safer, less polluted and dangerous place to live with only 2 or 3 billion Humans globally?
Why do we have to keep having more? So Elon can get richer? He has enough money and power already. Probably too much.

With China, we need to sound slightly conciliatory, while slowly and steadily cutting off some trade, adding a small amount of tariff on some key items that China wants to export most. EV cars is a Prime export item that the US will not allow in to protect the US auto industry. But there is a problem anyway in that more people are slowly adopting a personal financial choice to find secondary transportation, and even to look at a lifestyle change.
But that sort of trend is small, and yet incremental. The leaders of that kind of lifestyle change will be the graduating people from US universities, deciding that they like the urban lifestyle within highly walkable and bikeable cities that have industry and jobs within reach of Urban transit, light rail, BRT and other types of mass transit. Some, like I said, not many, but there is a slowing gaining idea of become either car independent or certainly only relying on cars occasional use secondary vehicles, perhaps a very used small truck or van to handle the heavy load needs, but is a small cost having been already severely depreciated.
So, that is becoming a trend outside of Government's Policy scope. People are becoming political in their own choices of use of vehicles or not, finding towns that have Green Jobs and Green Energy systems being installed, and have local business environment that is NOT dependent on Freeway Merchandising in mass movements of goods and services.
People are starting to hate their cars.

  • @ThomasMunich-f1k

There are not so many countries which share a border with Russia. If we subsume Belarus and Georgia as vasall states which do not have control of its own borders to Russia, it is Norway, Finland, the Baltic states, Poland, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaidjan, Kasakhstan, China and North Korea (Mongolia is locked between China and Russia and therefore cannot be as a hub for smuggling. Only these countries would have to control export resp. transit to Russia. Kirgistan for example could not smuggle goods to Russia if not one of these countries would allow transit because they don't have a common border.

This negates 2 key facts that unravels any potential such a tactic could have. The first being Russia would strike back. Ukraines energy infrastructure is decimated already. It is entirely dependent on foreign funds to meet even basic governmental spending needs. A few well coordinated attacks could cripple Ukraine further at a time where finding more funds and more support is near impossible. To put it bluntly Ukraine cant go tit for tat with a superior force, with superior assets. The 2nd point is Ukraine does not have the permissions to use western weapons deep into Russia and is highly unlikely to get it, they produce to few long range capable munitions on their own.
A third point just for fun. If they try going shot for shot with Russia their air defense missle supplies which are already strained would be depleted leaving Russia to do sufficient damage so as to cause the population to turn against Zelensky who is already polling increasingly unfavourably. Not a good idea.

BRICS? Are you serious? They can't decide where to have lunch.

BRICS is a collection of countries that are having trouble agreeing on almost every issue, foreign policy, or currencies.
The only countries not using the US dollar are China and Russia for international trade. The dollar remains the standard for trades.

      Pathetic comment.
So you believe in a bright future for the BRICS. Then go ahead and buy Russian stocks. Good luck with that.

Oil production in the US is at record highs. It's OPEC's policies which largely determine oil prices.

@@18_rabbit Those shocks are usually temporary, resulting price hikes are generally of a short nature, just as we see today, the price of Brent Crude is around $74/bbl, despite the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Contrast that with the oil crisis of 1973.

@michelemarr76 your country might be but others are not so there are forces that keep the price up.
      1. Traders speculation
      2. Low crude stored volume
      3. Tanker location/booked
      4. Refinery volume
      5. Shipping consumption

Yes, and they are suffering a lot by doing this. Russia will lose their infrastructure because all its infrastructure was built by the Soviets, and it needs repairs. Corruption is also costing any civilian infrastructure contracts, including its military, which cannot be sustained for 5 years and beyond, and every day brings it closer to being a valet with China. So Russia may hope that its alliance with North Corea will protect it from China but China already controls North Corea.
