Berlin was divided by the wall, into communist controlled East Germany and West Germany. This is the world the Scorpions members grew up in, and were singing about the changes they were seeing all around them. The early 1990s were extremely hopeful, ... maybe we can be there again.

This song was out before that but became the anthem for the downfall of the divided German nation and the fall of the USSR.

Me too class of '88! Got to see these guys in a small club in Frankfurt, The Alabama 2000 Club...lol WOW memories! Got to see Roger Waters at the Wall. Great Times! Hope was everywhere and it seemed to be a revival of "The Love Era"... but alas....

I was taking high school German in the late 80s and my teacher had escaped East Berlin as a teenager. The wall came down and she was an emotional wreck for weeks.
Class of 89' here... but I got to see the Scorpions on their Love At First Sting tour in 83' in Alaska... not many bands came to Alaska back then... the Scorpions are special.

The song was written about being the first hard rock band that played in Russia in 1988 and the thousands of fans cheering them on even though they were from Germany. Hence the title " Wind of change "
Was about performing at the Moscow Peace Music Festival August 1989.. The first time western metal acts were allowed to play in moscow... Thats when he started writing it.. Then 3 months later the wall fell... And then they recorded tge song for their album...

This song captures what was a monumental, life changing moment in world history. It captures that sense of hope that so many felt in that moment when they finally saw freedom on the horizon.

This song always gets me. I grew up through the “Cold War “ we had so much hope for the future of the world then. We figured by now the world would be a better place. Our dreams from the 70s and 80s hasn’t come to pass yet but I’m still hopeful.

My last comment I was being silly but serious though I love this song and it still gives me the same chills when I hear it just like when it first came out. As soon as I hear that whistle I'm taken back to another time. I especially love those background vocals. Goosebumps.

Our world has been through so much. When I was your age, our threat was nuclear war. Still is but on a smaller scale since the agreement to reduce arms. When they ended the Cold War and brought down the Berlin Wall, we learned that if we are to survive we must strive for democracy, freedom, equality, environment protection … live like brothers. And although we disagreed, it was civil, it was negotiated, it was just. But now, I can see we’ve learned nothing from our past. 30 years ago I remember we had hope in our hearts, now hate dominates. It took only one man, just like it did in Germany, with Hitler. This song used to be inspirational, now it’s an anthem for what we lost, once again.

I was in Germany on November 9th 1989. The day the Berlin wall fell. My unit was at graf and we had AK-47's pointed at us just a few months before that.

This was also in remembrance of fall of the Berlin Wall which unified the two countries. This was televised back in the late 80’s. I was about 10 years old. This left a huge mark on myself do to the fact this was my first time connecting to the fact that people lived and suffered so much.
I was in the army stationed in Germany when the Berlin wall came down. The wall separated West and East Germany. The Scorpions wrote this during this time.
Scorpions' singer Klaus Meine was inspired by how the band's music was popular in Russia, when the Scorpions first played in the USSR in '88/'89... they gave their opening band on that tour a shout out - Gorky Park.
It was just a testament to the power of music to heal... the German nazis had invaded Russia during World War II and killed 27 million people. 3 generations later, a German rock band won over an audience in Russia.
It also marked the reunification of East & West Germany in 1990 after 40 years of being separated by Soviet & US forces.

I am in my 70s when I first heard this song I cried openly. Scorpions are from Germany and the concert you were watching was in Russia.
I was born two months before the end of the defeat of Hitler which would never had been possible without the 25 million Russian fighters that broke the back of the German empire.
Those 25 million Russian fighters died. US history from television to movies always depict the US as the ones who freed the world of Hitler, when an actuality it was truly the Russian forces.
They liberated my country of Norway. This concert being held in Russia by a German band personifies the lyrics “did you ever think that we could be so close like brothers?“
The future is in the air we feel it everywhere is in reference to the Berlin wall falling finally uniting east and west Germany.
This entire concert came full circle for the Russian and German Nations people to heal and recognize the piece is the only way out for the human race.
Yes 🙌🏽 I love this song by The Scorpions. I remember President Reagan and just the part of his speech. When Reagan was in Germany he said to Russia, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” That was a huge moment in history, because of the Cold War. I saw on a documentary that Reagan wasn’t going to say anything about the Berlin Wall. He thought that the Germans were just used to being separated and accepted it by that time. But then he asked some German about it and they said something like, I haven’t seen my brother who lives on the other side of that wall for 40 years. Yes we still care and yes we wish that wall was down. And that’s when Reagan decided to bring it up at the very last minute in his speech in Germany. Reagan was standing so powerful against Communism.

This song was written in the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the break up of the Soviet Union! So the Wind Of Change they are talking about is freedom and how young people brought change to the world. And they are witnessing something they hoped to see!

When we all were young and all of a süden the world changed beyond belief. Everything seemed possible. We fehlt free in a way that is inconceivable to the poor youngsters of today in their mental prison of PC ... and boy, were we WRONG.
it's so amazing these dictatorship countries allowed these mega rock bands to play. for those people, our bands were like a religion, keeping their spirits up, changing culture, and I believe helped topple the most oppressive regimes.

People don’t realize but rock n roll was illegal in Russia until.. the scorpions were the first rock band to legally perform in Russia. It all happened on the same night they performed this song live broad casted across the world as the wall fell. The most hopeful I’ve ever felt in my life time. The 80’s were an amazing time in history.
He wrote the song in Russia were they were playing a gig, towards the end of the ussr. It’s about feeling a change in the world with the fall of the eastern block. It was released at the time the Berlin Wall fell. Reuniting families on opposite sides of the wall who had never met.
