In truth, we only see one true "rage momemt" from grog and it's in the 2nd ep. xD so we don't know if he's truly in rage mode in these parts :P There isn't a notable change (in ip 2 just the white eyes and a little bit of veins/more muscle?)
Probably explained already. but Grog's a barbarian - they've got the most HP, and have means of reducing the damage they take as well. They can literally eat attacks that could outright kill other characters
Grog shutting his eyes is an actual thing in-game - barbarians have the Reckless Attack option, where you drop all defence and roll two dice to hit instead of one. Does mean that any asshole trying to hit you gets to roll two dice as well, but you're a barbarian. You're built like a truck, you can generally take it while you're dishing it out.
I believe you can also advert your gaze and gain disadvantage vs attacks but you can't be charmed and other things like that. Could be wrong, about that but it is probably a mixture of both.

this isn't a spoiler, just something the show doesn't make 100% clear, the ritual was supposed to happen on the winter solstice but vox machina out enough pressure on them that they sped up their plans so it didn't work exactly the way it was supposed to
They did have the star chart of the solstice with "That's 5 days from now", should be clear enough it dosent take them that long to reach the castle. There's also Sylas commenting "I thought it was too soon" when Delilah said they have to accelerate the plan.

I think its pretty safe the whole first game gets animated easily and likely game 2 as well. The critter population is large and even non criters are enjoying it so its pretty much seems like a done deal to me. If it takes another Kickstarter I'm sure people would support but they got that amazon money now XD

She ran the ritual too soon, and she didn’t have a sacrifice. Sure, she was forced into this situation by Vox Machina, but at the end of the day, she fucked up the ritual. Rituals like this one are delicate, and easy to fuck up. So for all anyone knows, he might actually have planned on fulfilling his promises. If The Whispered One plans to become a god, he’s going to need worshippers and followers to do his bidding, and you don’t get that if you don’t pay out on at least some of your promises.

Grog actually isn't the *ultimate* tank. All Barbarians can rage, which means lots of hit points and raging to absorb damage; but Beserkers like Grog are DPS. There are other primal paths that make a better tank, like Ancestral Guardian.

So for insight for why pike suddenly fizzled out in the real time of the games, the player who played pike lost connection throughout gh a skype call right at that moment.
During the games, it was actually Vex who got hit with that Death Ray (I believe that’s what it’s called). It did like 70 damage or something which can out right kill most characters at low levels. Not sure why they switched it the Keylith here, but it was still aimed at Vex before the hit. Not saying anything else for spoilers
Probably happened to Keyleth because of what will happen to Vex early next season, gotta share that love around. Also needed an excuse for Vex to get over her hostility towards Keyleth, and have yet another moment trying to build yhr Vaxleth relationship.

Yep, depends on the specific type of charm. In this case Vax couldn't break out of it himself, Pikes first action in battle was to run up and cast a Restoration spell to get him back on their side.

Someone else maybe already said it but, Pike's astral projection was their interpretation of Pike's player skyping to keep playing while away, and her skype would lose connection at the worse moments
There are a couple of types of Barbarian subclasses. Some, like Grog are a mix of Defense and Attack. Whenever he goes into a rage, any normal/magical damage that is done from weapons/claws etc is halved. So like when Vax stabbed him, his dagger can do 1d6+3 damage. So a D6 die roll and 3 additional damage, so if he rolled a 6, he'd of done 9 damage normally, but with Grog it's always halved rounded down, so in that case it'd be 4 damage. He still takes full damage on certain other things. There is a class of Barbarian that takes half damage from *everything* except Psionic (Like mind powers) damage.
OK, so here's what we know about the Briarwoods and the Whispered One so far: At some point in the past, Sylas was dying and a desperate Delilah was lead to some shack in the woods by whispers in her head. There she found the book that contained (among other things) a ritual that she used to turn Sylas into a vampire, thus saving his life, but now they are both indebted to the Whispered One. At some point after that the Briarwoods arrive in Whitestone and proceed to murder the ruling family there and take over. In this episode Delilah said this was something she did, because the Whispered one told her to. We also learned (last episode I think) that Dr Ripley found and restored the ziggurat that's underneath Whitestone as part of her contract with the Briarwoods. We also see Ripley ask Percy about 'the secret under Whitestone' in that torture flashback. So we can perhaps infer that the ziggurat (that's been there who knows how long and that the de Rolo's knew nothing about) was the real reason why the Whispered One wanted the Briarwoods to take over Whitestone, since it was appearantly necessary for this ritual, whatever it was. And speaking of the ritual: We know it was supposed to happed on the solstice, but that Vox Machina's arrival forced the Briarwoods to accelerate their plans and conduct the ritual early. We also know that the Whispered One supposedly wants to come to this plane and that that's easiest at the solstice, when the barrier between planes is thinnest. That brings us to the point we're at now in the show: Delilah uses her own blood as a sacrifice since at this point she doesn't really have any other options and (since Sylas just died) also not much left to lose. She asks the Whispered One to bring back Slyas (We don't know whether the original bargain was just about saving Sylas that one time or about keeping him alive indefinitely), but when he appears, he doesn't do that, in fact he doesn't do much of anything and just sort of disappears again (was he even actually there to begin with? Was it just an illusion or projection?). What's left in his place (and as far as we can tell the only effect this big bad ritual actually had) is a spinning black orb that's just sort of floating in space. So now we're left with some questions: Did the ritual work? Was it too early? Not enough blood? What was the ritual actually supposed to acomplish? Is the Whispered One back? And maybe most pressingly: What the hell is that spinning orb thingy?
I dunno if someone has said this yet but in the campaign wrap up matt mercer(the DM) said that ritual delilah was doing that looks like it failed actually' fully suceeded
Two things missing for the ritual. Its' rushed because it was supposed to be on the solstice, which is still days away, and the rebellion forced Delilah to attempt it early. And also she didn't have a blood sacrifice anymore. It was a desperate Hail Mary (or Satan as the case may be) before the fight even started, but after Silas died and she lost access to a sacrifice of Cassandra or Vax, it was even more so unlikely to succeed.
The Whispered One didn't care enough about Silas and Delilah to betray them. Far as they explain, he'd have let them do what they wanted after they did their job for him. But he also doesn't care enough to help them out if they start to fail.
In the campaign they were like between levels 10-13 if I recall correctly, which means Grog is at 116-180 in max HP, so yeah, he can take quite a bit of damage. The specific spell that Keyleth used in that attack is legit called Sunbeam, which is lets the user shoot a 60ft straight line of sunlight. You should check out the video Critical Role put out called The Legend of the Design of The Legend of Vox Machina, its one of their 6 behind the scenes videos on the making of the show and that particular one goes into the character designs themselves. Honestly you should check out all 6 once youre done with the show because it sheds a lot of light on things.
well, season 2 is officially confirmed, and considering that, as far as I know, this show did pretty well, I wouldn't be surprised if they get a budget increase. there's also a couple fights that are probably gonna be in season 2 that I'm really hyped for
The Whispered one already did bring Sylas back from the dead, when he turned him into a Vampire, he's under no obligation to do it again, it's not his fault the Delilah was unable to keep him alive past that point, plus they were early on the ritual to summon him.

And because they have to fill Constitution and Strength they often use Intelligence as a dump stat. And that’s how you get a Barbarian.

Rituals like this one are delicate, and easy to fuck up. So for all anyone knows, he might actually have planned on fulfilling his promises. If The Whispered One plans to become a god, he’s going to need worshippers and followers to do his bidding, and you don’t get that if you don’t pay out on at least some of your promises.

And we don't really know how the wording of the bargain was either. He had already saved Silas life once, so maybe he had already fulfilled his part, only that Delila had read more into it.

I know it’s been said a bunch but to those that don’t know, if you you grew up watching English dubbed anime these actors in this show voiced them. Matt Mercer, Marisha Ray, Travis Willingham, Laura Bailey, Ashley Johnson, Sam Riegal and Taliesan Jaffe. My personal favorite was Travis when I found out he voiced Roy Mustang from FMA.
Its even more fun when you know that Laura Bailey did the voice for Lust, so in a sense, Travis killed his wife xd.

@@mad_max103 I think it's a bit of both. It wasn't the ideal conditions to fully bring the Whispered One over, but it was a partial success that still helps to further his plan. Just more slowly.

The lead character designer for The Legend of Vox Machina is Phil Bourassa who's actually the lead character designer for Young Justice as well as pretty much every DC animated project. So in a way, you're right Roshi.
Phil Bourassa is the dude who works on character design for Young Justice and similar DC media, and he made the character designs for this show too. Man is GOATED.

Grog actually isn't the *ultimate* tank. All Barbarians can rage, which means lots of hit points and raging to absorb damage; but Beserkers like Grog are DPS. There are other primal paths that make a better tank, like Ancestral Guardian.

Well to be fair, most of the cast of Vox Machina came from anime dubbing (Vex aka Laura Bailey as Kid Trunks, Grog aka Travis Willingham as Roy Mustang, Sylas aka Matt Mercer as Levi Ackerman, Vex aka Liam O'Brien as Gaara, etc.) so the anime inspiration is definitely there.
Grog is not only a Barbarian but also a half giant. Dude can eat huge chunks of damage.

So for insight for why pike suddenly fizzled out in the real time of the games, the player who played pike lost connection throughout gh a skype call right at that moment.
During the games, it was actually Vex who got hit with that Death Ray (I believe that’s what it’s called). It did like 70 damage or something which can out right kill most characters at low levels. Not sure why they switched it the Keylith here, but it was still aimed at Vex before the hit. Not saying anything else for spoilers

Game mechanics-wise, Grog could literally survive a 1000 feet fall and still be healthy enough to move around. My mans built different
so, if you remember they had a star chart for the solstice, which they said was five days away, that was literally the day before. also when delilah said she needed to do it now, and sylas said no, it's to early.
Fortunately, Sideshow Collectibles IS doing a Grog Statue, it goes up for preorder soon.
There are a few Critical Role figures from McFarlane, but not a Grog yet.

There are a couple of types of Barbarian subclasses. Some, like Grog are a mix of Defense and Attack. Whenever he goes into a rage, any normal/magical damage that is done from weapons/claws etc is halved. So like when Vax stabbed him, his dagger can do 1d6+3 damage. So a D6 die roll and 3 additional damage, so if he rolled a 6, he'd of done 9 damage normally, but with Grog it's always halved rounded down, so in that case it'd be 4 damage. He still takes full damage on certain other things. There is a class of Barbarian that takes half damage from *everything* except Psionic (Like mind powers) damage.
They used the anime budget in that episode. Tanks are always needed, especially the good ones.

OK, so here's what we know about the Briarwoods and the Whispered One so far:
At some point in the past, Sylas was dying and a desperate Delilah was lead to some shack in the woods by whispers in her head. There she found the book that contained (among other things) a ritual that she used to turn Sylas into a vampire, thus saving his life, but now they are both indebted to the Whispered One.
At some point after that the Briarwoods arrive in Whitestone and proceed to murder the ruling family there and take over. In this episode Delilah said this was something she did, because the Whispered one told her to.
We also learned (last episode I think) that Dr Ripley found and restored the ziggurat that's underneath Whitestone as part of her contract with the Briarwoods. We also see Ripley ask Percy about 'the secret under Whitestone' in that torture flashback.
So we can perhaps infer that the ziggurat (that's been there who knows how long and that the de Rolo's knew nothing about) was the real reason why the Whispered One wanted the Briarwoods to take over Whitestone, since it was appearantly necessary for this ritual, whatever it was.
And speaking of the ritual: We know it was supposed to happed on the solstice, but that Vox Machina's arrival forced the Briarwoods to accelerate their plans and conduct the ritual early. We also know that the Whispered One supposedly wants to come to this plane and that that's easiest at the solstice, when the barrier between planes is thinnest.
That brings us to the point we're at now in the show: Delilah uses her own blood as a sacrifice since at this point she doesn't really have any other options and (since Sylas just died) also not much left to lose. She asks the Whispered One to bring back Slyas (We don't know whether the original bargain was just about saving Sylas that one time or about keeping him alive indefinitely), but when he appears, he doesn't do that, in fact he doesn't do much of anything and just sort of disappears again (was he even actually there to begin with? Was it just an illusion or projection?). What's left in his place (and as far as we can tell the only effect this big bad ritual actually had) is a spinning black orb that's just sort of floating in space.
So now we're left with some questions:
Did the ritual work? Was it too early? Not enough blood? What was the ritual actually supposed to acomplish? Is the Whispered One back? And maybe most pressingly: What the hell is that spinning orb thingy?

I dunno if someone has said this yet but in the campaign wrap up matt mercer(the DM) said that ritual delilah was doing that looks like it failed actually' fully suceeded
Two things missing for the ritual. Its' rushed because it was supposed to be on the solstice, which is still days away, and the rebellion forced Delilah to attempt it early. And also she didn't have a blood sacrifice anymore. It was a desperate Hail Mary (or Satan as the case may be) before the fight even started, but after Silas died and she lost access to a sacrifice of Cassandra or Vax, it was even more so unlikely to succeed.
"Why the zoom in?". Oh, you'll find out one day.
The Whispered One didn't care enough about Silas and Delilah to betray them. Far as they explain, he'd have let them do what they wanted after they did their job for him. But he also doesn't care enough to help them out if they start to fail.

In the campaign they were like between levels 10-13 if I recall correctly, which means Grog is at 116-180 in max HP, so yeah, he can take quite a bit of damage. The specific spell that Keyleth used in that attack is legit called Sunbeam, which is lets the user shoot a 60ft straight line of sunlight.
You should check out the video Critical Role put out called The Legend of the Design of The Legend of Vox Machina, its one of their 6 behind the scenes videos on the making of the show and that particular one goes into the character designs themselves. Honestly you should check out all 6 once youre done with the show because it sheds a lot of light on things.

well, season 2 is officially confirmed, and considering that, as far as I know, this show did pretty well, I wouldn't be surprised if they get a budget increase. there's also a couple fights that are probably gonna be in season 2 that I'm really hyped for
The Whispered one already did bring Sylas back from the dead, when he turned him into a Vampire, he's under no obligation to do it again, it's not his fault the Delilah was unable to keep him alive past that point, plus they were early on the ritual to summon him.
