What If Donkey Kong Country Used DK's Old Design?

- In the 90's Rareware was given the opportunity to redesign one of Nintendo's biggest mascots, Donkey Kong, and rendered him using state-of-the-art, prerendered, CG graphics. After seeing concept art though I got around to thinking, "What if Nintendo had been more strict with its IP, and told Rareware to stick with Miyamoto's old design for DK and DKJr?"
This is not a hack. I took footage of Donkey Kong Country, edited DK out with After Effects, and edited in the sprites I made in Maya.
Edit: Since people have been asking, here's how I made the sprites:
-First I researched DK's old design from arcade cabinets and the gameboy game.
-Using that design, I created a 3D model using Maya. I tried to make the models as 90's as possible, so the arms are two separate objects that overlap at the elbow, and the fingers are separate from the hands, and the fur is a fractal texture (just like in the original DKC).
-Then I animated the models, and rendered sprites at a large size, because rendering it at a small size made it blurry.
-I took those renders into Photoshop, and shrank them down so the idle animations were around 40x40 pixels each (since that seemed to be the average size of both original idle animations). The blending mode was set to nearest neighbor to prevent it from getting blurry.
-Photoshop has this neat feature under Images, Mode, Indexed Color, where you can limit any image to a certain amount of colors. So I took the renders and I limited them to only use the 16 colors (15 colors, 1 invisible) from Donkey Kong's color palette in the game.
-Then I just had to put them into After Effects and edit them into the video. Also, if you do this for yourself, I learned that After Effects doesn't like indexed colors, so after you index the colors, set the file back to RBG, and everything will work perfectly.
Also, I unfortunately don't know how to create ROM hacks.

One of the best animations I've ever seen. Create a 3D sprites in the style of Donkey Kong Country are really very complicated to do. This technique that you found it's really better. That little detail of the sprite when it moves, is perfectly making the sprite more realistic. That is, more faithful to the original game.
Looks like Cranky Kong found the fountain of youth.

I love the fine details and references you put in this entire video. The barrel throwing animation, chest pound, and the ground stomp from DK, the death animations for both DK and Jr, hell, I didn't even notice you changed the whole island until a second viewing. This seems like some alternate reality we never were meant to see, but now I want to see a DK spin off like this where you play through an adventure as Cranky and DK in these forms and fight off a Prince K Rool, all told as a story to the other Kongs by modern Cranky. I'm never gonna get that, but I want to believe now, dammit.

It's explicitly stated that Cranky is the original Donkey Kong in the manual of the very first DKC, it's also mentioned in Snake's codec conversation for DK in super smash bros brawl. Cranky's constant rambling about the game & watch and donkey kong arcade games are fourth walls breaks that are clear allusions to the past of the character. Cranky Kong being the original DK isn't really played with a lot these days anymore by nintendo but it has not been contradicted or retconned by any means.
PootisBear Rareware developed the game, they took the liberty to make cranky the first DK, but Nintendo, who created the original character, never stated that. Clearly I like the idea but it is not an official thing
Nintendo isn't just going to make the Rare games non-canon just because Rare joined Microsoft. The most they did was remove a Rare pin from Dixie Kong's hat.
Geor Geo Rare created Cranky not Nintendo, all original characters for the country series up to to rare's departure are sole creations of rare with creative consultation from Nintendo who maintained the legal ownership of the characters. I mentioned earlier that snake had a codec easter egg in smash bros brawl that confirms Cranky as the original DK. To elaborate further, this easter egg explicitly makes reference to DK's grandfather being the original donkey Kong who fought Mario. Brawl was overseen by Nintendo and was post-rare's acquirement by Microsoft, clearly if they wouldn't want it to be cannon they wouldn't tout it around in one of their own games.
The description says you made this but you obviously just traveled to an alternate timeline and got this.

Fun fact: The animation where DK notices his hoard is gone is from Donkey Kong for the Gameboy. Whenever Mario reaches Pauline, DK reacts in the same way before snatching Pauline again.

Yeah, since it uses not only Donkey Kong I's original, younger, more Japanese-styled arcade design, and also has DK Jr., it appears more in line with the Mario series, rather than the British-designed new age of Donkey Kong featuring Donkey Kong III and his nephew, Diddy Kong, created by Rare, rather than Nintendo.
Oh my God this is absolutely incredible. I love how they both look. You hit the nail on the head with these designs. I'm just super sad realising it's not an actual rom hack I can play. Amazing job, seriously.

Kinda wish you lowered the frame rate for some of DK and DK Jr's animations just to make it look more believable. But it's still looks great nonetheless!

I know, but Nintendo loves implying that the current DK is the same DK from the arcade game. I was assuming that was one of the ideas behind this video.
E-ManAnimates Nintendo’s already confirmed it, though. Super Smash Bros. Brawl introduced Solid Snake and special codecs for every opponent. DK’s codec confirmed that the Arcade DK is the grandfather (Cranky Kong) of modern DK.

Sometimes the main part of Nintendo doesn't really consider Smash Bros. to any capacity. Also, it's possible that the codec is different in the Japanese release.
I think the best interpretation of it can be 'Whatever they **** they feel like at the time'. I don't think even Nintendo can decide.

Hopefully this helps motivate people to look into how to replace the sprites because these are literally perfect.
Any plans to release the sprites or even the models themselves? Even if these can't be put into DKC right now, the models could be importing into different games....assuming they are not hundreds of thousands of polys that would take forever to reduce. lol

These sprites are really well done! I like that you changed Diddy to DK Jr. as well. If there's one thing I'd personally change, I wouldn't have DK's teeth on constant display in every one of his animations; just the ones where he's attacking, jumping, getting hurt and reacting to things.
Imagine if this design forever looked like this in all of the games he appeared in
I'd say this type of design most likely will end up as main Donkey Kong's design if RareWare didn't step in and make the Donkey Kong Country games.
