well, if European champion Daniel Ebert does it.. i still prefer to only let go of my air in the top end of my lift (my physical therapist, a femaile crossfitter, got me started squatting to strengthen my weak and thus often sore back)
Ivo Kraaier he can do that because he can squat much more than 150kg. When I started I needed the valsalva maneuver even at 80kg. Now I can squat properly without bracing but need to brace at 130kg. It's all about overall strength. At maxes a proper Valsalva maneuver is needed.

Great video Daniel! I'd add an extra hack to it (taken from yoga). I use it with my clients and we see progress INSANELY quickly: 1/ If someone has really low flexibility and mobility - and their squat is somewhere halfway - put a pile of books / a block / anything stable under their bum so they can sit on it. 2/ Then bring the elbows to the inner knees, and press them against each other - use this not only to open your hips, but also as leverage to grow your spine taller. 3/ Let them breathe deeply and gradually sink deeper into the squat. (It's also quite meditative and grounding - a great resting pose.) Hope it's useful 👍/ Kat Ps. Speaking of breathing, the 3:22 won my heart :D
Hi Great tutorial - really does explain a lot however I have one key problem and that is ankle flexibility. Do you have a video on this or can you make one on improving flexibility in the ankle? Id even pay you to do it haha, ive had to stop squatting because my form became terrible because of it :(
TheDarkSide243 I had the same issue. Wrap a band below your ankles and a post, then kneel down and move knee forward. Make sure the band is below the ankles as this pushes your talus bone back while you are stretching. This has fixed my ankle tightness.
Pierre Fitch hip and ankle mobility. Maker sure your knees are being pushed outwards, and knees going over toes, to make room for your hips to come further forward.
Point your toes out more. Use your quads to stabilize (think about pushing knees out first instead of sitting backwards). If you do this your spine should be extremely verticle and you won't have butt wink. Too many ppl think a squat is a hip/glute dominant exercise when actually it's supposed to be quad dominent to provent the lower back from pushing the weight at the bottom.
To do ass to grass, you need to relax hamstrings to get there, which is the thing you DO NOT want to do. You want to work your muscles in the greatest EFFECTIVE range of motion possible, and that is just below the parallel made up by knee patella and hip joint, where hip joint is below patella from side view. This is the position your muscles are stretched to their max. When going even lower, you must relax muscles on the back of your leg, you don´t want that, you want to have tension, therefore strengthen them as well.

Squating depth... no one can agree on it. Everyone says different things. Words I found while researching this topic by world-renowned spine expert Stuart McGill: “The risk is greater than is justified by the reward.
