Normally when reactors constantly interrupt a song it drives me insane! However, I truly enjoy your “interruptions.” Why? Because you teach; you explain; you’re involved with the music; you’re a joy to listen to. I found the constant stopping in videos annoying as well. Then, I realized that they have to stop playing the video periodically. If they don’t, RUclips can pull the video down for copyright infringement. I still don’t like that people stop the songs but now I understand why it is necessary even if the RUclipsr would rather let it play.
He was classically trained. His great grandfather was a cantor in a Synagogue in Israel and he credits his voice to that. His control and range is amazing
Out of the many Vocal Coaches I've watched react/teach us about this song. You my friend, taught me the most and I enjoyed it, that much more! Exceptional video, Sir!
I grew up on Simon & Garfunkel's version of this song, & there has been a few singers & bands that have done this cover, yet nobody has done it better then Disturbs version.......I may also venture to say, I enjoy this version better, only because the message that Simon & Garfunkel were trying to get across, is much stronger and clearer in this version! The original by Simon & Garfunkel, was a warning of what was to come, if we did not change our ways, & Disturb's version, is anger, because we did not heed the warning....... ❤️ One of the best covers in my opinion ❤️
It was said by the sole living member of Simon & Garfunkel that their version was warning about events yet to come that they saw on the horizon, and that Disturbed's version was heralding that those events had arrived.
I can't tell you how many reactions to this song I've waded through to FINALLY hear a reviewer correctly identify the specific quality Disturbed brings to this song as being "gravitas". Draiman's ability to be both warm and sepulchral simultaneously in the early verses, plus the classic metal fry and growl later, lend so much pure emotional mass to already-genius lyrics.
Who would have thought that Disturbed would play and sing this song - and surpass the original? AWESOME and your explanations were very interesting. TY
David’s story is fascinating. His songs are very emotional and come from his gut. My younger brother does lighting setup for some of his concerts and tells me what an awesome man he is. Enjoy
Everything about this song moves me. The visuals, the instruments used, even the play of light upon his face, all tell a story that focuses your attention on the devastating lyrics so brilliantly born of Paul Simon's mind. The true hero of this interpretation, I believe, is David and his incredible vocal talent. He has the voice of an angel and demon contemporaneously. I am truly mesmerised by him. Btw, I heard that he had classical training and it can be heard by his control over his incredible vocal capabilities.
You are so right! Simon and Garfunkel sound like they are wandering through a dream of wishing things would change and Disturbed made this song into a battle cry a call to arms if you will for the world to wake up and do something about it as the signs are all around us if we but look!!!
David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it!! He was trained as a Jewish Cantor, which is very similar to classical training. Can sing like an angel or the devil ! Loved your reaction and your take on David's performance Andreas. Try "Deceiver", "The Night", "Indestructible", "The Light", "Enough", "Violence Fetish" by Disturbed too. They are a "bit" heavier....LOL....
OMG, the tissues I've 🤧 gone through since I discovered David Draiman and Disturbed performing their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" on April 29, 2024. That day I have to believe my spirit 🙏 guides (out of the blue) first led me to a cover video by Dan Vasc singing "Amazing Grace" which was phenomenal 👏 and then to the cover video of Disturbed and David Draiman singing this most POWERFUL, EMOTIONAL 😂rendition of Simon and Garfunkels "The Sound of Silence". I'm 75 and was 15 when they released one of the most popular classic songs of our time during the 60's. It is amazing how relevant it is today, actually I feel it is even more relevant than ever in so many different ways. I've spent days since listening and seeing, you notice I didn't say viewing, the many channel hosts and each of their reactions and have 😢 almost every time. It's funny that more males have gotten teary-eyed than females, just an observation. By the way, David Draiman was really sick for the Conan live performance and I heard he was not pleased with his performance, being the perfectionist that he is I can understand why he felt that way. However, the production as a whole was amazing and his performance was EXCEPTIONAL! I loved it. So POWERFUL and EMOTIONAL! Disturbed "The Sound Of Silence" 03/28/16 | CONAN on TBS Team Coco Thanks, Diane
Diana Ankudinova is a young performer who shocks us with her pleasant voice and takes us into the abyss of events!!! Diana Ankudinova is unique and inimitable, goosebumps from her voice!=)))) Diana sings as if she lives in the song! The soul freezes or opens with Diana's voice.=))))))) I am a musician who has been with music for years, and believe me, I have not heard such a tone in all these past years.
I've watched a lot of reactions to this video. This guy is definitely ON his game. If I were looking for a vocal coach, this would be the one I stopped at. Brilliant analysis and spot on at every turn. Yes, DD is classically trained. Yes, DD added gravitas with his choices. Yes, brilliant analysis.
You hit the meaning of what he was trying to portray. Simon, warning & Draiman, confirming we did not heed the warning and the consequences of our actions!
I like you broke down the song. It had a different quality than a lot of other breakdowns I’ve listened to. I particularly like how you pointed out when he was conveying more anger when the song really stepped up a notch. He’s not just angry, he’s angry enough to be committed to forcing a change and being proactive. To transcend the anger and force opportunity and optimism. Great job Andreas.
It’s always interesting to see a fellow singer, musician or vocal coach review this. I am not familiar with your favorite benchmark cover but this cover of The Sound of Silence is definitely a gold or platinum or whatever precious metal you use as a standard as premium top of the line. Paul Simon even likes this. Disturbed took it and made it their own. It’s had over a billion views so I think that’s definitely a benchmark that won’t be matched anytime soon. The voice analysis was really good with the illustrations showing folks that the voice truly is an instrument and controlling it takes training and practice. The bit about the false vocal fry was the most complicated part with the two parts of the voice being utilized to create that sound. Another vocal coach also noted that is why his face is so intense as his facial muscles are being utilized as well for that and in this particular song adds to the intensity of the song as it fits perfectly with the theme and words. This performance is a true masterpiece on so many levels and resonates with so many people in different and surprising ways. There are hundreds of reaction videos and many are deeply touched on a personal level depending on the events occurring in their lives at the time of the reaction. Otherwise the reactor is simply in awe of his voice, the band and the build up to the crescendo of that fake fry and quickly brought back to his beautiful calmness. Amazing.
Yes.. this cover is better then the original. I cried like a baby when I first saw this video. Knowing the meaning behind the song. Makes this version the more believable.
Your analysis of the song turning from a warning to reproach is spot on. I see Simon & Garfunkel's the warning and this version the anger of heeding that warning.
I would very much like to hear your reaction to their live performance of this song on Conan. Despite being ill that day, David Draiman delivered a performance for the ages, complete with an orchestra. Paul Simon reached out to the group after the performance to congratulate them as he posted it on his social media, calling it the best cover of any of his songs ever. Conan celebrated the performance last year as it became the first video from his show to hit 100 million views.
He was also ill during the performance and there was a little bit of autotune put in by the Conan people. He was less than pleased about that. It was unnessasary.
If you get the chance you must watch the live Conan version Disturbed sound of silence. The video version is amazing but the live version is next level and the fact that David Draiman was sick when he performed it, shows what an amazing singer he truly is.
Paul Clemons, please give citations. In an interview with David Dramond I saw he said he trained as a Cantor at a private Jewish School I Wisconsin. His Grandfather was a Cantor in Israel, his parents claim he got his voice from his grandfather.
Just open up his wikipedia page. In Early Life and education it says he spent a year after high school at the Yeshivas Nevah Zion in Kiryat Ye'Arim on the outskirts of Jerusalem
@@brucedickinson12 he says it all the time in interviews. People always think he is straight classicly trained and he corrects that with the fact that he was trained as a Jewish cantor before he veered off into rock/metal
Every single time I listen to David sing this song I get chills, just a supurb version. I am new to your channel but I did enjoy your explanations of the vocal masterly of David Draiman. If you take requests I would like to hear your comments of Austin Browns cover of "Unchained Melody". Thanks
A good cover is not one that seeks to repeat the original but makes you look at the work in a different way. Pay attention to the young performer Diana Ankudinova. Her covers take on a new sound in every sense. This is without even mentioning her unique vocal abilities.
I stumbled upon your channel because I love watching people react to this cover. I stayed because I loved your reaction. I subscribed because for the first time ever I not only enjoyed, but actually learned something I could put into use from a vocal coach's reaction, because you explained it physically with the image of the throat and how the vocal cords behave. I look forward to watching many more of your videos.
What a Headf**k! It goes to show to never judge a book by its cover! You did an ACE job here! So informative, so educational, so professional. You got a new subscriber!
Love your reaction and instruction. I’d never heard of Disturbed until I came across this cover in 2020. I still get the chills. I also still have the original vinyl. I was just a teen and loved Simon and Garfunkel. Even Paul Simon contacted the band when this cover came out and told them that it was now theirs. You mentioned Eva Cassidy. A friend gave me a copy of the CD released after her early death at 33 from melanoma. Fields of Gold is my favorite!
Damn, Andreas...new fan here. I've seen scores of reactions to this epic cover but yours is by far the most insightful and informative. As to singers you need to react to, Floor Jansen (of Nightwish) is at the top of my list, closely followed by Morrisette and Sohyang. Subbing for more!
@@andreasgrussl You'll also want to check out Britney Slayes with Unleash the Archers and Vintage Postmodern Jukebox ft. Haley Reinhart if not on your list yet. Cheers!
@@andreasgrussl Another group worth checking out is Dirty Loops, they're a Swedish trio with an excellent lead vocalist whose style is reminiscent of Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder, which is probably why they're being managed by Quincy Jones. World On Fire is, well, fire. LOL
This song blows my mind every time. It's just such a powerful message. Completely agree that Disturbed took a deep and meaningful song with a bit of an up tempo happy sound and gave it a dark and brooding tone that certainly fitted the lyrics better. An amazing performance. As for great covers, check out Johnny Cash covering Nine Inch Nails "Hurt"
@@andreasgrussl I would also definitely recommend it. Trent Reznor (front man and general god of NIN) said, upon seeing/hearing Johnny's cover, that the song was no longer NIN's. That Johnny had made it something far more affecting and emotive. I don't know if you'll be like me when you watch/react to it, but you might want to have a box of tissues nearby. It was, in all the ways that could possibly matter, Johnny saying goodbye to the world. And it shines through in every single note and phrase.
I agree with you! This version is magnificent! I could listen to it over and over! By the way. Eva Cassidy's version of Fields of Gold was beautiful! Sting thought she sang it better than he did!
David wasn’t classically trained in the traditional way. But as a young man was training to be a Cantor as were his father and grandfather. To this day he still trains with a vocal coach. At least this is the understanding that I have. If I have made a mistake, my apologies. I have been a huge fan of Disturbed for many years. When I heard they covered the iconic Simon & Garfunkel song I wasn’t sure what to think/expect. But it blew me away. I like Disturbeds version much better. Such emotion coming through in the vocals and music. David Draiman is absolutely incredible!
It's incredible, I can follow him as a bass (an octave lower), then, when he gets into his higher register, it even becomes difficult for me to follow... his range is insane.
Hi. Great reaction to such an amazing performance! Incredible cover...one of the best ever! He was actually trained as a cantor when he began. Greetings from London
I have seen so many reaction videos to this great song. Yours is one of the best I have heard. You really explain many aspects that I absolutely have now knowledge or understanding about singing. I thoroughly enjoy your analysis and give you much respect for what you put into this. I am definitely subscribing to your Channel and will have to watch more. Good Job! 👍
This song is all about the great awakening. The first, third and fifth verse is written in the perspective of the unawakened and the second and fourth verse is written in the perspective of the awakened.
In his younger years, Draiman was classically trained as a cantor, who is someone that sings liturgical music and leads prayer in a synagogue. he was classically trained wow
I absolutely agree with you about the Eva Cassidy Song. It was my favourite cover until I heard this. And I love Eva Cassidy and all her covers. They are exceptional but this covers so much ground. His training and experience gives us what I consider the greatest voice I have heard.. How much we lost when Eva died. Imagine if she had grown older and more experienced. She was beautiful
This is my first time on your channel and I have to say I'm blown away! You are genuinely intelligent and, knowledgeable, as well as informative. You have earned a subscriber sir. Great job really, just great content!! Keep it up!
A lot of reaction channels just stop the video for copyright’s sake and don’t really add any substance to their reaction. With your reaction, though, I feel like I’m actually _learning_ something… learning why the song is structured the way it is and how/why the artist sings it the way they do. 10/10
I never really paid attention to the lyrics in the original..... but oh my... David Draiman demanded me to listen to the lyrics and it's significance. IMO he and Distrubed brings this classic to a new and better level... Brilliant is deffo one of my words as well. And that last part.... ah... chills... so so sooooo GoooD!
Please, "Hold on to Memories" live concert video and "A Reason to Fight", also the live concert video. Both are written by them from the heart and shows the love for their fans and the world.
I have to completely agree with Mike M, I also think a lot of coach reactions fall short in relaying the knowledge. You teach while also giving us your overall feeling. I am new to your channel and thank you for your content. Also, I would like to see your review of Lukas Graham maybe 7 Years or Love Someone, I find his style unique and would like to hear your breakdown.
It's interesting that you said Simon and Garfunkel's version sounded like a warning, and this one sounds like a reproach. I've read before in the comments on other reactions to this song something like, "Simon and Garfunkel's version is a message of warning. Disturbed's version is a message of anger that the warning went unheard."
For contrast watch/listen to his band Disturbed and the song Down with sickness. Warning there are explicit lyrics in the song & it is somewhat dark, but it gives the true rang of this man's voice! Loved your reaction to this song.
You are right about how they gave the song a very different tone- at the 'neon god's' bit, he sounds really ANGRY about it- whereas the origional has a more melencoly feel.
Covering Simon & Garfunkel helps Grammy-nominated 'Disturbed' vocalist rediscover his cantor's voice and classically trained style. Before David Draiman became famous as the singer of the heavy metal band Disturbed, he trained to be a cantor
Love this version of the song, my whole family listened to it together and loved it, including my paretns, older brother and teenage sisters which hardly ever happens! Love how you react to all kinds of different singers, Tyler Joseph from Twenty One pilots has a very unique voice, you might enjoy reacting to some more of his live vocals, ruclips.net/video/TSoDQXzIgTw/видео.html
I very rarely like artists who cover other artists work. This was brilliant!!! I felt David's voice in the pit of my stomach and I loved it! I will recommend Heart's cover of "Stairway to Heaven" at the Kennedy awards center inducting Led Zeppelin into the Rock and roll hall of Fame. No words to describe it, you have to hear it. Well worth any critique!

I would very much like you to do some reactions to The Home Free Vocal Band. While Home Free has many songs, one that I would particularly like your reaction to is "In The Blood", which is a cover of a John Mayer song. Almost any of their songs would be good to react too but In The Blood is just one of my favorites. Thanks for the professional reaction to Disturbed's Sound Of Silence, it is my favorite version of that song by far.
I really enjoyed your explanations of what David is doing with his voice. And yes, he was trained as a kantor, so some "classical" background. Oh, and Paul Simon actually made a point of saying that he liked their version of his song. So they got a big "tick" of approval from the person who wrote and first sang the song.
Yay! I love when vocal coaches react- and naturally do more than JUST react. Thanks for talking the time to really weigh in and break it down! Can you do some Heilung? "In Maidjan" live from the LIFA concert at castlefest, maybe?
@@andreasgrussl awesome! I hope you enjoy! (Anything live from lifa at castlefest is better to sample ((they use more technique)) than the studio recordings)
The climax starts about two minutes and lasts until the coda!! It is a piece performed by a professionally trained Jewish cantor. His grand father is a famous cantor. I would love to hear David sing in his trained voice and in Hebrew.
Cuando algo toca el alma, y la arana, es una obra divina. Su VOZ ES TOTALMENTE INIGUALABLE, SE BALANCEA POR LAS EMOCIONES HUMANAS Y LAS PURIFICA. MAGISTRAL.

Everything about this song moves me. The visuals, the instruments used, even the play of light upon his face, all tell a story that focuses your attention on the devastating lyrics so brilliantly born of Paul Simon's mind. Paul Simon said to David that this was the version that make people listen, theirs was just an early warning, this punches it home.
Brilliant analysis. You explained why it makes us feel what we do. Goosebumps EVERY time!

Makes sense. I'll check out her voice.

Very well said!
All I know is that this cover was just simply unreal. OMG!
A true gem!
This is a perfect song with the perfect person to sing it they were made for each other
Agreed, it's a perfect match!
Amazing.
I'm happy you liked the video. Disturbs version of this song truly is a master piece!
You looked absolutely delighted while you were listening, which I loved. 👏
Thank you, I'm happy you enjoyed the video!
Yes.. this cover is better then the original. I cried like a baby when I first saw this video. Knowing the meaning behind the song. Makes this version the more believable.
This was an excellent break down. I really wish you reacted to the live conan version though! It is even more breathtaking
Thanks, I'm happy you liked the video. Maybe I'll try to compare both versions.
Brilliant description & breakdown of Draiman’s iconic cover. Thanks. 👏
Thank you very much! I'm happy you enjoyed the video!
Your analysis of the song turning from a warning to reproach is spot on. I see Simon & Garfunkel's the warning and this version the anger of heeding that warning.
Good job on this reaction. Good pacing. Good information. Good editing. You had something to say and you were able to say it. I want to see more.
Thank you, I'm happy you enjoyed the video!
This and Cash's cover of Hurt fall squarely in the category of "no it's mine now."
k.d. lang's cover of Hallelujah falls squarely into that as well. Cohen *actually* declared she owned the song after she performed it for him.
Such a powerful rendition of the song. I am a big Disturbed fan as it is, but he hit a grand slam on this one! I get goosebumps every time
It's an incredible recording!
Thanks for letting me know. Will take a look at it.
He was also ill during the performance and there was a little bit of autotune put in by the Conan people. He was less than pleased about that. It was unnessasary.
@@jimspetdragons3737 Unfortunately autotune has become the standard in the industry
Disturbed also won a Grammy for Best Live Performance for that. Despite Draiman having a temp of 103° and not having the strength to stand.
If you get the chance you must watch the live Conan version Disturbed sound of silence. The video version is amazing but the live version is next level and the fact that David Draiman was sick when he performed it, shows what an amazing singer he truly is.
Thanks for letting me know. Several people have mentioned the live version, so I will definitely watch it.
Was he sick wow never heard that b4
Yes he was sick. He had a 102 fever but still sounded amazing
David was a classically trained Jewish Cantor who even left Chicago to train in Israel.
Thanks for providing this background information on David's vocal training!
@@gregkirchner1108 citations in YT comments suck. Formatting is trash. Easier to just search.
Yes, David Draiman is a classically trained vocalist.
Thanks for confirming!
@@andreasgrussl Sort-of...he was trained as a Jewish Cantor...like his grandfather.
@@pickle581 Cool. The Jewish Cantor training uses principles that are very similar to some classical schools of singing. That explains a lot.
@@pickle581 really never heard that b4
@@brucedickinson12 he says it all the time in interviews. People always think he is straight classicly trained and he corrects that with the fact that he was trained as a Jewish cantor before he veered off into rock/metal
Hi Andreas, Excellent reaction. Thank you for sharing.
I love this version. Your explanation is really explanatory and informative.
David was classically trained as a contor, he didn’t finish. After he left he formed a band.
Thanks for clarifying!
I think you mean *Cantor
Every single time I listen to David sing this song I get chills, just a supurb version. I am new to your channel but I did enjoy your explanations of the vocal masterly of David Draiman. If you take requests I would like to hear your comments of Austin Browns cover of "Unchained Melody". Thanks

A good cover is not one that seeks to repeat the original but makes you look at the work in a different way. Pay attention to the young performer Diana Ankudinova. Her covers take on a new sound in every sense. This is without even mentioning her unique vocal abilities.

Thank you, I'm happy you enjoyed the video! Eva Cassidy was amazing! Her singing takes you to into another world.
Damn, Andreas...new fan here. I've seen scores of reactions to this epic cover but yours is by far the most insightful and informative. As to singers you need to react to, Floor Jansen (of Nightwish) is at the top of my list, closely followed by Morrisette and Sohyang. Subbing for more!

lol, I didn't mean to scare you :-) But I thank you for your kind words and am happy that you enjoyed the video!
Thank you for the song suggestion!
@@MarcusH wow. that sounds heavy
@@andreasgrussl It very much is. But in a very captivating way.
I agree with you! This version is magnificent! I could listen to it over and over! By the way. Eva Cassidy's version of Fields of Gold was beautiful! Sting thought she sang it better than he did!
Both of these songs are very special!

This song is all about the great awakening. The first, third and fifth verse is written in the perspective of the unawakened and the second and fourth verse is written in the perspective of the awakened.
He was trained classically. He's fantastic.

Your reaction and commentary was wonderful... thank you!

Yes he was trained as a cantor.... Phenomenal Voice... Best Cover Ever!!!
For contrast watch/listen to his band Disturbed and the song Down with sickness. Warning there are explicit lyrics in the song & it is somewhat dark, but it gives the true rang of this man's voice! Loved your reaction to this song.
Thank you, I'm happy you liked the video. I will definitely take a look at the song you suggested.
You are right about how they gave the song a very different tone- at the 'neon god's' bit, he sounds really ANGRY about it- whereas the origional has a more melencoly feel.
Yes, that "neon god's" part being angry in my opinion was also what really stood out.
Andreas, you sound like a professor I had while in university. I was studying trumpet, but took a voice class as an elective. Good analysis.

Thank you very much! I'm happy you liked the video!
I agree with the comment on his live performance. What a voice and the best rendition of a classic tune
Incredible version of this song!
Thank you for your song suggestion. I'm happy you liked the video!
Thank you for your breakdown of the song. It was a delightful experience. Loved hearing what you thought about it.
Thank you, I'm happy you enjoyed the video!
I really enjoyed your explanations of what David is doing with his voice. And yes, he was trained as a kantor, so some "classical" background. Oh, and Paul Simon actually made a point of saying that he liked their version of his song. So they got a big "tick" of approval from the person who wrote and first sang the song.
Thank you, I'm happy you liked the video. It must be quite a feeling if Paul Simon tells you that!
@@andreasgrussl Indeed! And I also just read that it's the only cover version of Sound of Silence that he openly liked.
You should check out the live version of this song on the Conan O'Brien show. It's even better 💜
Thank you, will check that out!
Yay! I love when vocal coaches react- and naturally do more than JUST react. Thanks for talking the time to really weigh in and break it down!
Can you do some Heilung? "In Maidjan" live from the LIFA concert at castlefest, maybe?
Thank you, I'm happy you liked the video. I'll take a look at Heilung.
@@andreasgrussl awesome! I hope you enjoy! (Anything live from lifa at castlefest is better to sample ((they use more technique)) than the studio recordings)
Loved your technicality with this truly amazing rendition.one of my all time favorites. WOW
Thank you, I'm happy you liked the video!
P.S. Eva Cassidy's cover of Fields of Gold is incredible...definitely one of the best ever!
Yes, it's amazing. In fact most of her covers were incredible.
Totally love Eva. Good suggestion
Really loved your breakdown and knowledge of what it takes to do what David is doing here !
Thanks a lot! I'm happy you enjoyed the video!
The climax starts about two minutes and lasts until the coda!! It is a piece performed by a professionally trained Jewish cantor. His grand father is a famous cantor. I would love to hear David sing in his trained voice and in Hebrew.
Thanks for clarifying that. Yes, it would be awesome to hear that!
Cuando algo toca el alma, y la arana, es una obra divina. Su VOZ ES TOTALMENTE INIGUALABLE, SE BALANCEA POR LAS EMOCIONES HUMANAS Y LAS PURIFICA. MAGISTRAL.
From interviews I've watched of David and other sources, he is classically trained and/or trained as a cantor.
Thanks for clarifying!
