There's something I like a lot from your reactions, you praise every member of the group, and this time even the great George Martin, that's awesome really, and it's preciseley that combination what made of them the brillian band they always were, and always will be. First song very rocky and enthusiastic, second one slower and melancholic but both with tremendous lead voices and wonderful accompaniments, George's guitar in the second is unbeatable.
I've always said I think that one (Mamas and Papas) is the only cover of a Beatles song that's better than the original (although I do love the original too). The other song that might come close is Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help From My Friends." It's great, but I'm not sure anything can top Ringo's version.
Ringo recorded I Call Your Name in 1990 for the 10th Anniversary of Lennon's Death, produced by Jeff Lynne, with Lynne, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh and Jim Keltner. It was pretty cool because it was updated with a more modern sound but it had Ringo singing so it sounded just like the Beatles too.
I have always loved “Long Tall Sally” and Paul’s great vocals. Such a fun song from Little Richard and brilliantly covered by the greatest of all time. I love this second song, “I Call Your Name” and John’s fantastic vocals. The Mamas and Papas did a wonderful rendition of this song that I recommend you should check out. Another great video Luke. Yes they either did "LONG TALL SALLY," or "I'M DOWN" as the last song at their concerts, both sung by Paul. I know because I saw them in concert twice.
I ❤ both of these songs! Little Richard taught Paul how to do that real "rock scream" in the early days. "I call your name," was later a hit by "The Mama & Papas" but The Beatles version is still my favorite. Love your reactions!! 😊
When Little Richard says that he taught Paul how to do the whoots (not the scream), he is not being literal. He is claiming Paul as part of his legacy. This is a great honour for Paul, so he doesn't dispute it when questioned. Ringo finds it hilarious though. Because, of course, Little Richard didn't teach it to him -- at least not in the way he describes. But Paul did learn it from him, listening to his records over and over and practising it. Paul may have felt self-conscious doing it in front of Richard in Hamburg, but Richard has given him his blessing. Richard would often knock people he felt stole from him or copied him. But he has claimed Paul as his own.
@@Kieop I thought I heard or read that Paul said he learned it from him back when they toured together in the early days. But even if it was from the records, it doesn't matter. Little Richard was definitely one of the "Founding Fathers of R&R" along with Chuck Berry.
The funny thing is that the tempo never varies. It keeps acting like it wants to switch from a straight feel and break into swing, but it never does for so long. And then that cowbell just keeps it rigidly straight, although the rhythm guitar work in the background is adding some really nice syncopation with hints of swing. And then in that instrumental break, they do break into a full walking swing and it's glorious. And it feels so great at the end when immediately the vocals come ripping back in and they switch back to straight and there's that cowbell again to hold it down. I really really love your Beatles reactions, man.❤
I was going to say, what is he talking about "the tempo speeded up?" I'm a former music teacher I ought to know, they did NOT speed up anything, they merely changed from straight duple beat to swing style during the guitar solo and back into the straight beat as you said.

Luke - there’s a track on Past Masters Vol. 2 that I’d love to see you react to. It’s a playful song and one of my favorites, it was released as the the B side to “Let It Be”, but never included on an album, titled “You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)”. I think you’d like it - different than any other Beatles song you’ve heard.
2 great songs, if you like Paul's powerful voice check out Oh Darling if you haven't already. BTW, your last same is the same as Stuart Sutcliffe who was the Beatles bass player in Hamburg. He died at 21 yrs old from a brain injury, the result of someone beating his head in a fight.

About 'I feel fine' you highlighted their cheeky and silly personalities, those are the boys, and whenever they had to lip sync that was exactly the way they performed, you noticed Ringo in the bike and George's fake mic, notice as well at the beginning when John began to sing he looked at Paul like asking for approval on his imitation and then Paul nodded, that's lovely from they both, and when the camera focus on George he began to sing with different lyrics. They didn't like just to mime to any song but actually sing, that's where that naughty behavior comes from.
I can only imagine that they hated lip syncing. They are/were very real guys when it came right down to it. I picture John being asked to lip sync and totally mocking the process. 😂
Also, what you have to remember is in the "old days" other people wrote the songs, the Beatles changed all that by writing virtually every song themselves, what a talented group of guys. From Liverpool I may add. (my home city)

And obviously confident enough in their commercial fortunes that Paul could start playing with his vocal delivery, copying heroes like Little Richard or Ray Charles. I Call Your Name is one of the first songs where McCartney really starts to play more interesting bass lines in a song. One of my very favorite Beatle songs.
Luke - An EP was a record that was in between the size of an album and the size of a single. EPs generally had 4 songs (singles had just 2 songs). The "Long Tall Sally" EP had 4 songs on it. You have covered two of them ("Long Tall Sally" and "I Call Your Name"). But you have not listened to the other two songs form that EP - which are ("Slow Down" and "Matchbox"). Those two songs should be the ones you listen to next - before you move on to the "Help!" album. Also... There will be two B sides that you could listen to before the "Help!" album. The B side to the "Ticket To Ride" single (which came out on April 9th, 1965) is a song titled "Yes It Is". The B side to the "Help!" single (which came out on July 19th, 1965) is a song titled "I'm Down". The "Help!" album was released on August 6th, 1965.

These two songs were on the USA album called the Beatles Second Album in spring 1964. Long Tall Sally: Anyone doubting Ringo's drumming ability needs to listen to this carefully. He kicks butt. Triplets at the end kills it. Beatles used to close their 1964 shows on tour with Long Tall Sally. On I Call your Name the Richenbacker 12 string guitar is featured prominently by George. And no, it doesn't need more cowbell...only riock band back then who even had enough guts, knowledge and experience that they could semmlessly swtich styles in the middle of the song and back again, from straight beat to swing beat and back. It would have been an extremely boring song without that change.
Dear Luke! The Past Masters contain some amazing songs you cannot find on chronological albums. However, I hope you will resume the Beatles time travel where you dropped off. Starting with Help, which comes after Beatles For Sale, that you have just covered, right after you have finished both volumes of the Past Masters (or before that, or in between, interspersing). Luke is doing the songs on each album as they were released, from the beginning. That is the PROPER way for a reactor to dive into the Beatles. THIS is how you see their development and how their music evolved, instead of skipping around or starting with their later music. Be patient, he will eventually get to the songs on the WHITE ALBUM.
I've always thought of Long Tall Sally as Paul's Twist And Shout as they are both first class tour de force examples of fabulous balls to the wall rock and roll vocals.

From what I read, Paul got together with Little Richard and pleaded with him to teach him how to howl like that!
