I am only a boarder who rents a room. One of the biggest assets of the house is its outdoor patio and lawn. However, its lawn is overrun with dandelion weeds and looks very unkempt. My problem is, I developed a problem with balance and tend to fall down now and then. I really want to sit down while pulling the weeds, so I was planning on buying a Flexrake weed puller from Amazon which happens to look just like the last weed puller Yuri tested and counted it the best of the handheld tools. Amazon's price is $15.51, and since it seemed to do well in his test, I will feel confident at buying it. I am glad I took the small amount of time to watch your video. Thank you for putting out the energy to film you fulling testing quite a number of different weed pullers. It should enable quite a few viewers with lawns in need of their help choose the one best suited for the job.
The long forked hand tool is my weeder of choice. Works in nooks and crannies that others don't. And works with every type of weed. And it's far cheaper and easier to store. Dandylions are perhaps the easiest kind of weed to pull - try a lawn full of oxalis...
Fantastic review. Writing from the UK I have used a German Wolf-Garten corkscrew on a long handle which you screw in and then out. It makes a big hole, tears up the soil and in my case through overuse gave me forearm tendinitis which ended my weeding for 6 months. Your distinguishing between large and small weed performance was also excellent.
I have the green one (mine is black) and I love it. To get a deep tap, you twist more often - three or four times around - using the tap to loosen itself before pulling it up. You twist it like a piece of rope all the way down. Only one twist, and you just break the main stem, leaving the rest underground, so you didn't really give it a chance. They all leave fragments of taproot, but it doesn't matter because it takes time for the dandelion to recover and make it back to the surface because the crown is destroyed. The same model with a spade makes a bigger hole than this simple design. Exposed soil accepts new weed seeds, so the smaller the better. If missed, the divot can be easily filled just by snapping release of grass plug back in the hole. Best results after a rain or sprinkler when the ground is soft. Toss the weeds into water instead of compost. Seeds sprout or go dormant in compost, and are spread back out. Weeds in water, water log seeds so they can't germinate, and takes the functional 'skin' off roots to they can't regenerate . The liquid is full of nitrogen and potassium and just smells like wet weeds.
I have a rent inspection in a couple of days and have some pesky weeds that need pulling. I was thinking of buying a weed puller. This video was exactly what I needed. Thanks.
I just pulled like 25 wheelbarrows worth of barnyard grass weeds with a Fisker weed tool. Great tool, no twisting which is the way to go in my opinion . Looks like they upgraded the handle too, mine is egg shaped. Wish I had this video a few weeks ago! Nice video
@hannahwardle2503 lol. I grew a lot of nice grass and learned how to control weeds, so thankfully, not too many. I've moved away from the weed puller for my lawn, though. I find it takes quite a bit of dirt with it and creates a lot of divots in the lawn, which are annoying to fix. I'd rather just spray for weeds once or twice a year and call it a day.
I have a Fiskars puller, but looks slightly different than the one you used. I think it works really well and helps save time and your back. There's probably a slight learning curve to really get a good feel for any of these, like maybe 50+ pulls each
I have the first one shown that is green. It's a weed hound and I think it works great and I would put it at the top of the list, not the bottom. I also don't twist it at all. Center it, push down with your foot, release it by pushing down the top knob. No bending over at all, no twisting, easy peasy. None of them gets the whole root most of the time, so I think it boils down to how big the hole it makes and this green one pulls very little extra dirt. Opinions differ I guess...
Weed removal actually has a function of aerating the lawn. Some weeds like dandelions grow in places where soil is compacted so if you don't like them, then removing them and allowing time to fill in the spot will allow the soil to loosen up. Me, I like dandelions because they are liked by pollinators.
I have been using the weed hound for years, which is the green one with the nails. I have never twisted it, and it pulls up the entire tap root on the dandelions. I think your twisting it is breaking off the root, as the nails are tight around the root. Try it and see what happens.
I have a weed hound. For me, a 90 degree twist does the trick. Quick and effortless. In the long run I'm not sure the other, more expensive, pullers do a markedly better job.
I owned a few Piskars from Ctire and found they handled large weeds easily but the mechanism fails after couple summers or gets broken due to the plastic template eventually cracking between the metal grabbers! I think I will be trying that Costco model as demonstrated! Thanks.
Mine didn't last that long with the plastic guide breaking too. The heavy dry soil I was working in killed it after only a few hours of working with it.
I have a Fiskars 3-claw puller like the one in the video, and also the 4-claw version. The 3-claw one works OK (just OK), but the end of the handle is abrasive on my hand, the release is too far away from the top, and the claws are bolted on with nylocks that come loose if you don't put some Loctite them. So, it's not great. The Fiskars 4-claw weeder is a huge step up from the one in this video, and it's been working very well for me.
I use a shovel bought cheap at an estate sale. I pry up a little to loosen, then pull weed out by hand. Doesn't leave a hole to plug back up. Just tamp down with foot on the cut. Aerates compacted soil. You do have to squat or bend over, but it gets the whole root. I think you have to squat anyway to fill the plug hole with the other tools.
I put this on full-screen and only RIGHT until the end realized it was you, Yuri! lmao never thought I'd be watch this man weeding instead of driving an atutomobile! Great video and channel!
I have Grandpa’s Weeder and I don’t like it for two reasons. 1. It’s very slow because you need to manually remove the weed. It doesn’t have an ejection device. 2. More often than not the weed root breaks off near the surface, which means most of the root remains in the ground.
After breaking two (older model) Fiskars I got the Gardena one, and I’ve been happy with it. It’s sturdier and does a good job, so we concur Yuri 😅. Was surprised to recognize you at the end, I watch lots of you car reviews

The green one with the nails actually works really well. You're having problems because you keep twisting it. Just pull straight out. It's super fast to use too

I think you are talking about the first one shown that is green. If so, I agree. I have one. I don't twist it and it works great. It's called a weed hound but having difficulty finding one to purchase. Out of all of these I think it is the best one, not the worst one.
How good is that Gardena Weed Puller do you think it will take out nasty stinging nettles with ease ? also how long has yours lasted for without falling apart ?
That Fiskars tool was a Godsend to us in California. We have stubborn deep rooted weeds (like our politicians). No bending over, got the entire root, but had difficulty in rocks. (Note: Would like to use it to remove the people in charge, but they'd get grumpy!).
