Gaijin plays very loose and fast with its classifications. The top was not a "tarp". The Brits called it a "canopy" and it was to protect the open top turret from artillery fragments, the same as was fitted to the M-36s late and post war. The mesh screens shown were blinds to prevent snipers from being able to shoot the crew as they were looking out thru it.
