From Trump’s Speech to Israel-Gaza: Jason Stanley on the Politics of Language | Amanpour and Company

- As grief and anger cascade across Israel and Gaza, language can be weaponized to widen the rift, spread propaganda or advance an individual agenda. And it doesn't stop there. From the radical speeches of Donald Trump to the extreme rhetoric of Russia, language plays an often dangerous role in politics. Yale philosophy professor Jason Stanley joins Hari Sreenivasan to discuss his new book, "The Politics of Language."

I always love hearing Jason Stanley speak. I've interacted with him a few times on Twitter. I'm really looking forward to his new book!
Always enjoy when you have Prof. Stanley on. Incredibly well-read and smart person.
This interviews keep us informed and sane in the atual state of a loaded world.
I'm grateful for the brilliance of Dr. Stanley.
Interesting and necessary discussion...thank you both!
I recommend Tim Snyder’s lecture “how the Holocaust could have happened” which explains the ethos and playbook of Hitler, which is identical to Trump.
agree. if trump isn't referring to Jews, which he isn't, who is he referring to. I think we all know...
@@judithbreastsler Narcissist Trump is referring to any/all who don't endorse him. Narcissism 101: I can do no wrong.

Words lay the foundations for later violence,
The danger of misplaced or misapplied words is greater than the intent of loaded weapons.
In times of war and crisis, adherence to core principles is more important than at any other time. Glad to see Professor Stanley speaking out about the dangers that become possible when these levels of dehumanization and fanaticism are invoked. It’s overtly genocidal language at times, as mass atrocities continue to occur against civilians. No civilians of any country are to blame for the actions of their leadership, that’s the exact type of reasoning that allowed for the massacre on October 7th, saying that every civilian is culpable for the occupation. Actually think about that, the Israeli government is using the same type of reasoning as who they call terrorists, that every civilian is guilty at most, or a sad cost and “collateral damage” at least. That’s truly insane. Dangerous AF, and inflicting more brutal damage and violence on these civilians is not going to help make Israeli civilians safer, if anything it’s raising the chances for something even worse to follow, because until there’s a political solution to what has been willfully ignored and thwarted by Israel as a policy choice for far too long now, which is freedom for Palestinians, full equality and rights. Until that happens, nothing will actually improve.
correction: all Israelis 18 years or older...must serve in the army for 3 yrs...then they have to serve in the reserve for 45 to 55 days per year until age of 58. For Palestinian.. there is no such thing ...and those who resist Israeli replacement & dispossession are usually volunteers.
Stanley is a J, so I'd be skeptical of what he says on Palestine. FREE PS!
Thanks for this very cogent and morally centered comment! Note also at 10:38 when Prof. Stanley says some Israeli politicians are justifying their current atrocities by comparing them to Allied bombings in WWII - newsflash: those were also war crimes.
I've listened to a couple of Jason Stanley's lectures and talks on RUclips, and this is the most focused and coherent I've ever heard him.
Ouch. I've felt that some of his earlier lectures are rough, but he's gotten better when talking about his book, _How Fascism Works_ in the last couple years.
He is an Orwellian character.
As a Palestinian who has been oppressed since 1948, we suffer a lot from the “politics of speech" which been used for decads by israeli leaders. In Israel, there is a fascist figure who is considered a model for using the “politics of speech.” He is Benjamin Netanyahu. He used many "speech politics" terms, most recently the prophecy of Isaiah and the giant "amalik". What does the guest comment on this?
You need to read the Quran. Islamism is your problem, not Israel.

His book on Fascism was amazing and unsettling.
Excellent points. Switch the language away from the polarized terms.
That discussion of “super predator” from the 1990s was excellent. It’s a glaring example of how right-wing language about black men impacted policy, largely supported by even liberal politicians. However, a big difference is that the left and liberal politicians can admit mistakes, and many did on this one and came around to criminal justice reform, because they supported over-incarceration. Right-wingers who created this language continue to pretend nothing was wrong with it, and no adverse effects were created by it. In others words, they believe in pure fantasyland where their rhetoric and actions have no consequences.
Except it's accurate to describe an outsized number of black men, perhaps even moreso today than in the 1990s. And people notice that.
@@albertomartinez714it was horseshit then, and it’s horseshit now. Trolls like you trumpet it. Does not make it true. Get a life if this is what you think of human beings.
if Hamas is a terrorist group then how is IDF not a terrorist organization.
Tough question. Was the US armed forces a terrorist organization when operating in Iraq post 9/11?
@@jmcd9828Easy "yes". And that's only one example.
The US invasion of Iraq was declared illegal on Sept 15, 2004 by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. Bush was tried in absentia by the International Commission of Jurists in Geneva. “The invasion of Iraq was neither in self defense against armed attack, nor sanctioned by the UN Security Council authorizing the use of force by member states and thus constituted the Crime of War of Aggression.
@jmcd9828 yes lol. you thought you had a point there?
If any collateral damage is terrorism, then all war is terrorism. Some people think intention matters, and Israel claims it is not intentionally targeting civilians. Hamas intentionally targets civilians, so there is no doubt about the matter. I'm guessing you don't care about intention, or if you do, you think Israel is lying about theirs.
One magic word that the professor fails to deal with is “Amalek” why is that?
Jason Stanley mentions the genocide carried out by Sukarno in Indonesia.
Too bad, he doesn’t mention that this murderous rampage was carried out with the support and backing of his government.
👏👏👏

Rationality!
Professor Stanley, I would love to chat with you about the impact of language in other areas besides politics, for example about disability and presenting animal abuse as acceptable in RUclips videos.

Marxism is more widespread than suggested. Marx is one of the great theorists of modernity, alongside Darwin, Freud and Einstein. Their ideas are foundational and ubiquitous even within ostensibly unrelated fields. Few would define their identity around a single intellectual figure, but the influence and importance of pivotal ideas should not be minimized, or denigrated. There is no reason we should accept ‘marxists’ as a legitimate political target, but neither should we trivialize their relevance or contributions. It’s just economics with labour and class emphasis, which can be useful to consider from time to time, Donald Trump notwithstanding.
JFK, on Karl Marx,
"And I hope all publishers will bear this lesson in mind the next time they receive a poverty-stricken appeal for a small increase in the expense account from an obscure newspaper man."

You're investigating the word "ceasefire" and "apartheid"? How about the phrases "we're not looking for precision, but looking for damage", "terrorist to be eradicated" exclusively only applied exclusively to Muslims or Arabs, "right to self-defense", "guerilla army", "we are in a holy war", "we must recall Amalek" and "we want Nakba 2023". These are words to be investigated not this fluff you just talked about. Do honest journalism otherwise your legitimacy will die
Unfortunately, for spin factories, information flows.
A Canadian living in the US asked some years back, was it always this bad? I said we now have visibility not only to what is happening now, but also the past.
Very specifically, the governments around the globe have lost control over use of propaganda, long used to tame/control their citizenry.
Wow 😑
This is going to cover up George Orwell's book " Politics of the English language".
During ww2 just look at wgat allies did to hammburg or even japan .
Yes. Those are war crimes of the most egregious kind.
Good video. But just as Hamas shouldn't be equated with Palestinians, Israel shouldn't be equated with Jewish people either.
The politicians have been busy peddling Demographic Block Identity. It's been mighty effective cover, for retooling the planet's economy, for benefit of the international elite.

The 'politics of language.' Well, you said in your interview with Q Rania that your journos saw 'babies had been shot.' Well, that's not true is it? More than disappointed as I have watched your show for a long time.
Stanley is insightful and fails to see fascism in Israeli leadership
A lot of truths spoken there. However, the moment he starts commenting on the current tragic situation in the Middle East he, at many times, begins to take advantage of the sort of language and reasoning he himself criticised just moments ago.
Historic parallels exist, and it is a normal, natural thing to see the parallels. Terms as means to create contempt and shut down conversation with opposition, such as vermin, and to justify questionable action, such as genocide.
He's a J. He can't be expected to speak fairly on Israel. Free Palestine!
He is an Orwellian character.
Let's not forget that trumps dad came from Germany 😳 so he learned this from his dad.
So did Einstein. Learn to think critically. Stanley is an Orwellian character.
Doesn’t anyone on your show understand the concept of intent?
Wasn't it Hilary Clinton who described youth as super predators? She's very good at labeling and othering.

Nope
The politics of language. Really ? Really? Is it not truth!
"vermin"? He's not wrong on use of terms used to build pillars of contempt - which historically has been prep for militarizing for mass destruction. Which we are seeing bulldoze Gaza.
Yet, at the same time, he infers use of Nazi, apartheid, genocide, etc. descriptors are too harsh to characterize the Israel military actions toward Palestinian, as its too much for the delicate sensibilities of those who lived through their own genocide.
🤦♀🤦♀🤦♀
This guy is totally Orwellian.
Stanley is a J, so I'd be skeptical of what he says on Palestine. FREE PS!
So your point is that Jewish people can’t make a point about Israel Palestinian situation? Only Palestinians can? or is it that Jewish people are just untrustworthy on every subject?
He is saying they need to be treated like humans. Being J-ish doesn't mean you cannot be critical of the policies of Israel. In fact, I would say a true J is obligated to speak against actions taken by a state in their name.
