He's right about aftermarket converters. Aftermarket parts, especially sensors, have gotten so bad in the last few years. It's awful.

I live in a state with no emissions inpections (SC).03 Pathfinder p0430 came on a few times and I reset it a few times before trying seafoam.I ran seafoam in the gas and did a full upper intake clean and then ran the crap out of it on the highway.CEL p0430 did not come back on until almost a year later.If you are on a budget or just need to pass emissions it is worth a shot for $12 worth of seafoam.
I have both PO420 and 430 so sea foam it is for now. We'll see if it works

Thats because alot of the time a p0420 code is caused by the crappy Camshaft\crankshaft sensors and it throws the engine performance off which fools the o2 sensors surrounding the CAT. Most the time people dont even need a new CAT.
I've had to replace those sensors several times.
I just replaced camshaft and crankshaft sensors three months ago, now throwing a code for a new CAT
any thought on it being a bad o2? Or should I explore the other sensors?

Good video to help me with my 0430 code. May I suggest that instead of using terms "left" and "right" you refer to the driver's or passenger side? Not sure if you mean "left" as we are viewing the video or "left" as we sit in the vehicle. Thanks.
All the color coded illustrations they showed weren't good enough?
Left and right is always referenced from being seated in the cockpit, or on the drivers seat for such as a motorcycle, as it should be. If everyone followed this common rule there would be zero confusion

Replaced the Catalytic converter on my 2015 Nissan Pathfinder at Nissan with Nissan parts. Just 20days over a year I have the same code up. The first replacement wasn’t cheap.
I have a 2013 Nissan Frontier SV V 6 with 97,000 miles and got a P0420 code. After looking at the cost of OEM catalytic converter for the right front converter I was shocked. With the truck being over 10 yrs old I am weighing the cost on OEM or aftermarket the difference is about $1,000.00. The used catalytic converter alone would bring about $300. - 500 at a scrap dealer.
I have a 2007 Frontier Have the P0420 for a year I decided to try the sensor swap with OEM but it failed the code actually came back way sooner,clean old sensor & found also the Ground strap was torn So I replace & all works been over 2 yr.
You are right about the original manufacture part, i had nissan veihicles before, a sentra and frontier as in the video, tried autozone or after markets just to found out that i got an error code again after some time and stalling issues some times, thus making me spend time money and effort, and forcing me buy the nissan original part as i have to do from the very begining so far, lesson learned for me. Some times it is not worth to save some few bucks while spending hundreds.
I fixed a p0420 code with the cheapest aftermarket cat I could find on Ebay about 3 years ago, still working fine. I just got a p0430 and will get another cheap cat after verifying my O2 sensors are in spec and checking temperature of exhaust pipe before and after cat to see if its clogged.
Male sure to change spark plugs, clean injectors, and confirm no vacuum leaks or o2 sensor issue.
get a sparkplug non fouler from local auto parts store , bore and grind open to fit O2 sensor and install downstream to block theses nuisance P0320, P0420 codes!

You should also take into account what caused the catalytic to go bad before putting a new one especially if it went bad way before it’s expected life span
Yup I agree. Put in new front cats in my 06 Xterra with aftermarket cats. About 1yr later p0430 is throwing again. Good thing I can afford a OEM cat, thanks for the tip!

Took my truck in for P0420/430, Service manager told me, ever circled on a peice of paper, the two rear cats. He must have been mistaken?

Thank for the video. It helped me figure out which side was the 430 code since no one at the auto parts dealer shops knew the difference. However, the guys there suggested that I run some 91 gas and sea foam first to see if it's throwing a code over dirty gas. I did fill up with 86 in a small town in az on a trip to save some money. :(. I reset the codes and it hasn't come back on. However, if it does- I will certainly follow your advice about the converters. I figured they were all the same quality. Thanks again!
Greg , on half tank , add 1 gallon of lacquer thinner , and go for 100 mile drive , and park for 5 minutes and give it gas , aroun 2500 rpm no more than that , that will clean your catalyst , try that , its inexpensive , unless you want to spend $1000 +

Informative Video. Thank you for posting. Question...how do you rule out the downstream senors? If a senor was going bad what code would it kick?
Normally lean or rich codes and or heated o2 sensor circuit code... Normally if you have a 420 or 430 code your cat is most likely failed... However if you have a bunch of codes in the system you should try to fix those first and than move on to the cats only if needed
Great Video, I have a 2011 Nissan Frontier Pro 4x that ive had issues with the MAF sensor, the original one died and put my truck into limp mode, i replaced with a aftermarket one from o'relieys and kept throwing the code a short time later, i took it back under warrenty and they replaced it with another which does the same thing, so figuring maybe were they were aftermarket i decided to get another off amazon, the reason why Nissan want $340 for a oem sensor. So have you had issues with these trucks not liking a aftermarket mass air flow sensor? thinking i may as well go ahead and buy an oem from nissan. What are your thoughts?
Stupid question, will a bad cat cause drivability issues? My 06 maxima is bogging down in 10 minutes of driving.burnt plastic smell too. Only code is p430
Yea I feel like this happens to my car. Feels like the muffler is plugged up which I think means the bad cat, in your case on the left drivers side for p0430, got so hot and brittle that it broke and caused and obstruction and a back up of exhaust fumes back into the engine and through the other side. Something caused that cat to burn up though. Air leaks from the intake plenum, oil fouled spark plugs from faulty valve covers causing oil to be burned up, exhaust leaks, or fuel delivery issues are all potential causes of p0420 and p0430. Need to fix the issue and not just swap the cat. If you fix the lean condition (at least in my case) by sealing the air intake plenum, the codes may go away without needing to replace the catalytic converter if found early and taken care of properly. Need to fix leaks, any timing issues, and spark plugs, coils, and valve covers while you're in there because it is a lot of work to get the air intake and all its components off. Might as well get as much potential issues solved the first go round

How much does it cost to replace?
In your video, I do not see a “check engine” light. I see a “service engine soon” light. Is that the same thing? Does the Frontier have an actual “check engine” light? I’m just learning about car repair

Are these converter locations the same as an 04 or no? I have both a P0420 and P0430 code on my 04 Frontier
If you remove the converter will the engine run properly
He doesn’t diagnose - just replaces what scanner tells him to change.
I’m having problems with my Nissan can you answer a few questions for me.
How difficult is it to pop the old one out and put a new one in? Do you just have to remove that one part or does the entire exhaust system have to come out?
4 bolts, apply WD-40 on old bolts let them soak for at least 30 minutes, remove oxygen sensor 1st and replace with new one after catalytic converter has been installed. Good luck friend.

Watch out for air leaks, exhaust leaks, timing issues, spark plugs, make sure you don't have a leaking valve cover where oil seeps down your coil
If not those issues, check your fuel delivery system. Fuel injectors, fuel pump and filter, ECT.

You said left side for the p0430 code, is that drivers side or passenger?
Left would be the drivers side.
But my passenger side was the p0420 code. On an 05 pathfinder. Bank 1. Bank 2 drivers side was the p0430

My wife's 08 Xterra had this problem at 150k and my Titan 07 just had this code pop up at 133k. Wonder if thats just the life expectancy of this part? Anyone else's go out around the same mileage?

Why is the cat going bad...if it really is bad? P420/P430 is a efficiency code generic code. Replacing the cat just kicks the $3000 repair down the road and not solving the problem causing the cat to (cough cough) go bad. Cats should last the life of the car...certainly not 140K miles.
