PLAY celebrates the power of imagination and the child in all of us. Featuring piñata artists Roberto Benavidez and Lorena Robletto, puppeteer Schroeder Cherry, artist Calder Kamin, and Noah’s Ark at the Skirball Cultural Center and the Cotsen Children’s Library.

These are magical! I love his work! The Bosch pieces are magnificent. Immediately recognized the weasel as I’ve been fascinated by the animals in medieval art since childhood. I am very drawn to the yin and yang of his birds. To me we are all both male and female in spirit, regardless of gender or sexuality. Some of us are more one than the other and some both no matter our plumbing. Born in the 1950s into in a culture that had a very limited understanding of gender and conflated this narrow understanding with “proper” gender based behavior and a narrow and religious driven understanding of sexuality was a challenge for a child who did not behave or see the world in that way and who was and is androgynous in behavior. So I celebrate his birds as my people.

STUNNING! Serious artsy question though; Is he using all acid free &/or light safe materials? If not, does he use a finish, sealant, or such, to maintain the quality of his pieces over time? I'd love to know, for use in my own art!
Roberto uses acid free paper and no finish on top of the paper. Of course, some colors fade over time but the best way to preserve it is to keep it out of direct sunlight.
