"In the early 1970s, Mountain Safety Research (MSR) designed a
pressurized burner stove intended to address performance shortcomings of white gas stoves in cold or adverse conditions, in particular for mountaineering use.[28] First introduced in 1973 and designated the Model 9 (and later as the XGK Expedition), the MSR stove had four main parts: a free-standing burner assembly with integrated pot supports; the fuel bottle, which doubles as the stove's fuel tank; a pump that screws into the bottle"

Around 1980 I bought a MSR GK multi-fuel stove (forerunner to the XGK) while serving with the US Army Special Forces in Europe. Best liquid fuel stove I've ever owned, and I've owned serveral and used many. I used it on +14,000' mountain tops, above the artic circle, every winter, and in the middle east and north African deserts for weeks and months at a time. I have burned white gas, unleaded and leaded gas (have to do a lot of cleaning to get the lead out of the fuel line), Naphtha, kerosene, aviation fuel, and diesel (don't recommend diesel unless you have no other choice) without any issues. I still have and use the stove. I highly recommend this stove for mountaineering and winter camping. The fuel bottle and stove is a lot heavier than canister stoves, but if you're going where cannisters are hard to find and need a liquid fuel stove, you cannot beat the MSR XGK-EX.

Agreed, I got one of these in 1990 (think it's the XGK II). Even used it with cheap vodka mixed with aviation fuel (it just about worked), and with some diesel mixed with cooking oil (that also worked).
It's a bit of a one-trick pony -- it boils water fast and it melts snow quick. For that, nothing else comes close, plus it's pretty much entirely field serviceable.
On winter trips with a group the XGK and Whisperlite combo is great -- the XGK for the snow melting and Whisperlite for the cooking.
Just goes to show how amazing these MSR stoves are -- they're 30-40 year-old designs that have barely changed over the years, and still beat anything else out there today.

I once asked "Bernie" (maker of these caps) whether there is reduced output as a result of using the cap over the original burner and he said it wasn't reduced. Looking closely at the flame pattern of the two examples here, the cap has a more divergent flame and some of the flames are "licking" the sides of the pot, not so with the flame spreader, which concentrates the heat more centrally. I suspect that it's this divergent flame pattern that is accounting for the time difference in bringing the water to a boil. since the jet produces a constant amount of fuel, there's no reason to suspect that OVERALL heat output is reduced with the cap.
I'm glad though that you did an A:B compare since you're the 1st one I've seen demonstrate this so it's valuable info.
As far as wasting fuel, my suggestion is to reduce the flame output keeping the flames more central which may not affect the time to boil too much (might even improve it!).

Although it slows down your quick boil time, Bet your Bernie Dog cap would best be used to fine tune your simmering effect so you dont burn certain foods that require a lower and slower cook time. I would still get one for this purpose, plus the noise reduction if your trying to be stealthy.

Nice video. I would have liked to see a burner flame control test, maximum vs. low simmer comparison. I purchased one of these XKG Stoves as a USMC surplus. It has the reflective plate roarer burner like the Optimus with the Nova burner, or a bigger version of the 8R/SVEA 123 burner. I purchased the Bernie Dawg dampener cap to quiet it down and help with better simmer control. It is quieter and the cap seems to give it much better flame control.

I replaced my MSR with a nova plus. The MSR is virtually unadjustable for heat, and only good for boiling water. In that respect, it’s the best. The Nova plus is far superior for flame control. Which is great for conserving fuel.

This stove truly is an all or none boiler. I used it for many trips. If you want to cook other than boiling water, seriously look at the Optimus nova plus. It’s been amazing. Just Carry extra orings.

Wow. Honestly the title could be changed to stealth xgk camp stove. I am so glad you made this I have never heard of a silencer for this stove. More views would be capable if the title was more accurate Plus I had no clue from the thumb nail what I was going to see.
    Cheers 🥂

So I would have to carry 50% more fuel. I think I will stick with the rocket sound.

So more money and weight, to have a much less efficient stove....no way.
As i understand, it will only be quieter if it outputs less power ... just use a lower setting, a less powerfull( less noisier) stove or at least, another stove that allows better simmering .

Why do you choose the XGK? My understanding of that stove is that it is extremely reliable even when burning vehicle fuels but that it burns so hot with no simmer at all and is only really for boiling?
The Whisperlite Universal seems better for civilian use, as it is already far quieter and also lighter while burning canister fuel with a simmer for proper cooking and even getting some level of milder flame for some degree of simmering even when using white gas or Kerosene, plus can still burn unleaded if necessary

Hows the simmer control on this stove with the cap on?

I use this stove extensively burning unleaded gas. I don't have much faith in the shaker needle. It needs to be replaced occasionally and the manufacturer does not sell that part individually. I've noticed that when it clogs, which does not happen very often, maybe between 80-120 burns, it's clogged and shaking does not fix the problem. I remove the jet and clear it with the tool. It's not a big deal. My advice for using it is after you turn it off but the stove is still burning, hold the bottle letting the stove hang. That way gravity helps get all the remaining fuel out of the line. So when you disconnect the fuel line from the bottle you don't have unburned fuel leaking from the fuel line. I would use white gas if I had it, but it's not easy to come by when I'm on a bicycle traversing the country. Unleaded fuel is everywhere. It's discouraging to me to know that the msr people don't encourage the use of unleaded gas. I imagine using diesel and kerosene would be dirtier.

If your clogging the jet id look into running some seafoam or something from time to time to remove any buildup, but for stopping and shutting it off just flip the fuel over and it will push all the fuel out and just do air then there is nothing left to worry about. yes less refined fuels will need to be cleaned more often thats just physics. If its a constant issue might try using the other jet and see if that solves the issue as its a bigger jet might not be as efficient but might work better in your case of dirtier fuel clogging up. worth a shot imo

Yes this is a berniedawg cap but you refer to it as a quiet stove. I'm sure this is an honest mistake on your part. Just know that there are definitely two camps at play here. I've always been a berniedawg guy. I've never had a reason to look elsewhere...

This doesn't even come close to a Trangia. This is the biggest waste of money and time... constantly pumping and using more fuel with the pressure and taking 4min for 2 cups of water🤣 rubbish.
If you were out hunting or wanted to remain stealth out in the wild, this wouldn't even be an option and its way too noisy and time inefficient.
