Can you share more details on how exactly you updated the driver? How can I confirm I have the new driver and it is being used?

    • @iiWiReviews
      @iiWiReviews  5 лет назад +20

You need new firmware actually. You can download it here - ifi-audio.com/downloads/ from the tab "other firmware" - than choose to download 5.3c (sub-version). Now go to your iFi installation folder (for example: C:\Program Files\iFi\USB_HD_Audio_Driver) and run firmware updater called: iFiHDUSBAudio_dfuapp.exe
There you can choose firmware you already downloaded, click START to flash it onto your device and it will be over in few seconds. ZEN will then restart itself and start glowing yellow. You're done! Cheers!

@@iiWiReviews Thank you! Something I find weird: Even before doing this, the only color I've seen when playing anything is green. I'm not an audio expert, but I downloaded a ".dsf" file from a free website, and also a ".flac" file. I played both using GOM player and Windows player, and the color was always green. Does this sound unexpected? Is that how you play higher quality audio or is something else needed? I'm afraid of upgrading yet because since I've always seen only green, I won't know if the upgrade was successful or not...

    • @iiWiReviews
      @iiWiReviews  5 лет назад +1

It might have to do something with your windows settings and player. First you need to go to Windows playback devices, find Zen and in settings disable all enhancements as well as allow apps to take exclusive control over the device. When that's done, players like Foobar and AIMP 3 can send bit-perfect signal to DACs, without any re-sampling taking place on windows side. I don't know if GOM is capable of doing that... so you should experiment a bit.

@@iiWiReviews So, i have a problem. I connected the zen to my pc and to my laptop via usb 3.0 cable. Both computers use windows 10. On both computers there is no ifi installation folder. On both computers there is the driver "USBaudio 2" by microsoft, which runs the device named "ifi (by AMR) HD USB Audio". The drivers are installed automatically in "C:\windows\system32\drivers\usbaudio2.sys". So:
      1. How can I see which driver / filter is installed on the ifi zen?
      2. How can i change the driver manually? I have already downloaded the gto filter from the ifi website. I Have no access to iFiHDUSBAudio_dfuapp.exe.
      3. Is it possible that the gto filter is already installed on the zen by default? I can see different colours when i use the zen.

I am using the iFi Zen DAC with Sendy Aiva cups and just updated the DAC firmware from 5.3 to 5.3C. Didn't expect that much, but surprisingly its really worth doing it. A big benefit is also that the TrueBass seems to be more moderate than before as it was a bit too much. Thank you for the video!

I subbed because, like you, I prefer the sound produced by the mid and high end Burr Brown DACs over every other chipset I’ve heard. Eventually, I bought the iFi iDSD Pro, and I stopped looking. It is the perfect match to my tastes. Extreme clarity and detail without sounding sterile like so many others do. No listening fatigue, ever. Very Pricey, though. Thanks for a great video!

Many thanks for your review. I have been using iFi Zen DAC v1. balanced connection with HD660s and I love the experience. Very smooth, natural and realistic sound with a touch of warmth. With 150 ohm impedance of the headphones, I never need to turn the volume above 11 o’clock. (I downloaded the 5.3c firmware, no iFi power)
I mainly listen to classical music (streaming from apple music lossless) which I think HD660s and Zen DAC combo is excellent for this genre. No matter it’s Chopin’s nocturne (solo piano) or Schubert’s string quartets or symphonies from Beethoven and Mahler involving 100 + pieces of instruments of varied tones and textures, the Zen DAC plus HD660s reproduce them with ease and accuracy. The HD660S makes me feel I am sitting right in the best seat of the concert hall.

Hi. I love your reviews. Why? Because you are very thorough and you stay focused. I mean you thoroughly explain each point. The technical knowledge you possess is very obvious. Another thing...I appreciate your tonality and speed. I can very easily follow what you are saying as you explain every important aspect, and you give viewers a chance to "digest" what you are saying. An example is how you go into detail with the optional AC adapter, the pros and cons. You also have great pitch and make it very easy to follow along. But that accent, where are you from please? Your English is well pronounced and you speak slowly and clearly. I am a crazy audiophile like you too! I purchased the Zen DAC a few days ago and I know exactly what you are saying. It is definitely the BEST DAC at this price point. I own now, amongst other brands like Schiit, Grace Designs and Audioquest Red/ Black PLUS now a total of 3 IFI DAC's. Thank you for keeping it real and keep em coming!

Having watched this review (and others) I have decided to purchase this unit. My setup is Beyerdynamics headphones, model DT770 80ohms + desk PC. I have to admit that iiWi was so right in every aspect of his review, that it just bothers my mind... He is right that the product is good, and he is right that after firmware upgrade it is much better indeed. So now the last step in front of me - separate Power Supply. But not sure if I decide to do it, as the soud signature I am receiving on this DAC, with newest Windows driver and GTO firmware is just excellent: more dynamics, more detailed (but still no harsh in trebles, that are present in my DT770 without this DAC), sound stage wider, just like more stereo now, comparing to standard, out-of-the-box firmware. Thank you iiWi for such a full, complete, and greatly supporting review!

I think a more practical reason for using a power cord plugged into an outlet is for connecting devices like a phone or external DAP to the Zen DAC instead of a computer. A portable device can power the Zen DAC but it will drain your device relatively quickly.

but one must immediately update firmware to 5.3C GTO filter as it is a huge upgrade in PCM sound, the already stellar MQA remains unchanged

You really are an excellent reviewer. I've just watched and read several other reviews of this product from well respected reviewers. I don't expect everyone to cover everything BUT.....only YOU mentioned the firmware update!! So relevant.
You always cover relevant details - for instance, advising, where possible, to use the low gain setting to allow use of the volume control away from the troublesome area where tracking errors can cause channel inbalance - great advice. You know what you're talking about AND you're modest too.
    Excellent.
I know you liked the Khadas Toneboard (which I own), but it seems you might have a preference for this Zen. Am I right?
    Thanks very much.

My 15 year old little dac (a modded ART DI/O) also improved a lot when I changed the 800mA 12V (10W) power supply to a custom 3.5A 12V (40W) power supply, so no surprise here. I did that 15 years ago, and I've kept my dac ever since. I don't kno how it compares to something like the iFi Zen, but it still sounds great. If I change, it will be for something like the Sabaj D5 which should be a step up to everything you've reviewed so far.
USB 2.0 is limited to 400mW and USB is limited to 1.5W I believe.

I love this amp/dac for the price, connections and sound quality.
I use it mainly as a bedside amp for Sennheiser HD600.
However with HD600 I find linear filter better and more natural sounding especially in upper mid range.
GTO is not default filter probably because firmware wasn't ready at launch or perhaps because it comes with some drawbacks.
With GTO filter you loose bit perfect decoding and everything is converted to MQA.
It is less natural sound to me, everything seems boosted and power match button (gain switch becomes some sorts of loudness switch as a result).
It might have different results on different headphones and be suitable for speakers but in my setup I prefer linear filter from previous firmware (5.2 and 5.3 without "c").

What type of files are you playing that you experienced the sound benefit of the GTO filter? Mine came with 5.3 and the GTO is 5.3c. I read on forums that if you are just using PCM files that 5.2 was the better sounding and more organic sounding. That was confirmed via communication with Ifi. Also confirmed by me. I definitely prefer the 5.2 over the 5.3. I thought the GTO filter was for Tidal MQA files. Did you experience better sound with other files as well? I agree with the added power supply benefits. @@iiWiReviews the e10K is ok. I wouldn't recommend it simply because there are better options in 2019. The amp isnt that powerful and the DAC isnt clean. Its better than onboard but when you try other DACs, the e10K shows its limits. I believe someone said that the bass boost function never fully turns off so that explains muddier sound compared to other DAC (??) But anyhow, if you buy an E10K you'll be happy but soon be looking for a replacement for not much more money. Id probably go FX Dac amp (on Massdrop for $45) or save up for something like this or buy like an Atom and save up for a Dac later. These type of options didnt exist until recently. The problem with E10K is its essentially a waste of $70 cause youll soon be wanting to replace both the Amp and the Dac. Maybe the K3 or Q1 are better.

Quick question --> Do you advise the need of external power supply if this is purely being used to run a pair of active monitors ?
or the external power supply makes a difference only when the device is being used as a Headphone amp.
    Thanks Mate :)

MH751's (which are takstar pro 82's in disguise), Samson sr850's etc. In electronic music it's a coin flip, because it overcompensates most genres, but instrumentals need it in my opinion to flesh out the bass guitars, drums and cello's which are hard to notice sometimes with TB off.

Good day to you too! iFi already provides USB cable and RCA cable... RCA will be used for connecting with your amp. I'm not Apple user myself so can't really recommend any.

3.5 mm is analog out that uses internal DAC... You can connect 3.5 mm to RCA on your Amp directly, but the sound quality would be mediocre. If you want to use external DAC, you need to use digital out (lightening port to DAC and than DAC to amp). So you'd need to find a Lightning to USB Type B cable first... So you can hook DAC to your iPad.

Thank you iiWi reviews!! I purchased this Zen Dac V2 based on your review.

I down loaded the 3.2 firmware, I have it plugged into my USB. (The additional Ifi external low noise power plug that I bought separately never worked so I have a repair ticket with Ifi). However, I don't know if I need it. (To be fair I have a mother board with the rare DAC-UP USB(USB designed to push out audiophile low noise power). The Zen Dac V2 as good as my old Burson. It does indeed sound just IiWi says it does. However, I worried that it would be too smooth on top. No way. It is very dynamic and alive on the top end. With the standard cable and bass boost, My HD 600 headphones sound perfect? However...
I bought balanced cables as well--it is significantly louder overall, it is more aggressive and has more bite, and it is more forward . However, the Bass Boost can sound congested and bloated with the balanced cables. I think of the Balanced cables as a GREAT 2nd sound option when the situation calls for this!)
    Bottom line-:) :) :) . . . . .

Hi Gregory! Yes it is 5.5 x 2.1 mm plug. Zen is using around 1.5 W or 0.3 A, not much at all. It's difficult for me to recommend any power supply since I build my own according to SuperTeddyReg schematics. Low noise power supplies are predominantly linear, but some of them are switching PSs and that's OK too. Final result is more important than how it was achieved. I heard nice words from a friend about iFi's own iPower brick and they're not that expensive either, costing around $50. It might be a good purchase for ZEN. Cheers!

@iWii Reviews Hi guy I really appreciate your videos and I have an advice to ask you. I would buy a Dac around 100 - 150 € to put a bluetooth receiver with and I hesitate between SMSL M100 mk2, SMSL Santhkrit 10th mk2, Topping E30 and this iFi Zen Dac, which one do you recommend me, Thanks to your answer.

Thanks! I haven't heard M100 MKII but among other ones I would probably choose between Topping E30 (for wide and airy sound) and Sanskrit 10th MKII (for denser and warmer sound). Both are equally good, it's just a matter of preference. Zen DAC would be my choice if I needed to use headphone out too, otherwise I believe both E30 and 10th MKII are slightly more capable DACs.

Is there a difference in wording between V2 and V1 if we are not using MQA?

Zen DAC is better. If you like Topping then go for E30 which is my favorite in this price range.
