Every time we make a tool purchase we have to weigh the tools use, price, quality and durability. The days when Snap On was the only option for professionals are long gone. For DIY’rs it’s a no brainer.

It's good for pro guys also. Because a lot of people drop out of being mechanics because getting setup with decent Tools was too pricey. Nowadays you can do everything if you spend a few grand in tools. And all the RUclips tool testing shows that although USA stuff is often good, there are often better options from Taiwan.
Don't even get me going on tool boxes. A $10,000 tool box when you can run a $300 tool cart and a supplemental basic metal tool cabinet for the stuff that gets less use.... Just blows my mind.

I was a teen in the 70's so Craftsman was the go to tool brand for us, great price, selection, quality and don't forget the guarantee... still have some. Sears back then was the bomb.
The collapse of Sears and the Craftsman tool line has indeed left a hole, smart of Harbor Freight to jump right in there and take over.
The Craftsman brand will never ever be the same as it was... I mean the name only really means something to people around my age anyways.

I don't deny they aren't as good as snap on, but when i can buy 10 rachets for the price of one snap on rachet, with more functionality, I'll take the dip in quality. Hell my daily use 3/8th is the hf extendable rachet with the 3/8 and 1/4 on the other side. Now the 1/4 sheered off one time i put too much torque on it but the 3/8 side still going strong. And all for a budget i can afford as a starting tech making a little over McDonald's pay. Now i do plan on moving on from my current shop in they don't bump my pay once i get a solid two years under my belt and have enough experience and time that i can feel confident putting it on a resume and get a job else where but for now hf tools and gear and keeping the nose to the grind stone

Something I've definitely starting to notice more and more is that young Techs who are new to the trade are definitely looking at Harbor Freight more and more to cut costs. With inflation the way it is Snap On is going to have a hard time locking these young techs into these huge credit agreements for a box. The Harbor Freight boxes may not even come close to the actual quality of a SnapOn box but for a small fraction of the price people will opt to go the cheaper route. Harbor Freights strategy of going after the professional instead of the DIYer is starting to pay off in dividends. We will see how popular the US General series 3 boxes actually end up being. I know in my shop many young techs are coming through more and more with Harbor Freight boxes.

I'm a diesel mechanic but personally I never bought a single tool off from a toolbox truck not once have I bought anything from any of them. I only buy my tools mainly husky which I'm a huge fan of and I've been using their tools for at least 20 years, I own also Craftsman and other Amazon tools as well as quite a bit of harbor freight tools and let me tell you harbor freight's really stepping up on their tools in general and That's a really good thing. Funny enough that my coworkers keep telling me to buy shit off from the toolbox trucks and I keep telling them no they're just overseas Taiwan or Korean made tools that are just copy and paste and made in the same factory and they're brought over here. Now I know snap-on makes a few of their tools on their own but in my opinion lately I've noticed that they have been going downhill and also they have been trying to copy and paste and getting tools overseas from a factory that you can get the same tool at harbor freight that was assembled in the same factory as that snap-on tool was. So in the end buying tools from the toolbox truck is completely worthless and I never will buy one from them unless I have to but as it stands right now I never have and possibly never will until the right time comes until I have to get a specific tool that no other brand sells.

The Pittsburgh impact sockets are indeed durable, but they just don't have the mass the better sockets do. It's the difference between 30 seconds of 'ugga dugga' and a bolt/nut that comes off in 2 seconds. I have replaced most of my often-used impacts with Snap On and the difference is noticeable. However, most of my main line sockets are Icon & I feel they're at least as good as '90s-earlier Craftsman. Most of my specialty tools are Icon. My electric ratchets are Snap On and I'm not the least bit upset about that, and it won't change.

I've tried many of the Icon line and they are real good stuff. My only real issue is longevity. With SO I can get rebuild kits for my old ratchets and my 20 year old ratchets are still the same handle design as today and can take the newer rebuild kits, HF on the other hand likes to change suppliers a lot and what they sell today might not be there tomorrow. IF their smart they will stay with the same design but maybe improve it or bring in rebuild parts. (Although to be fair, I can buy the replacement HF ratchet for just a bit more than a SO rebuild kit)

Have a few of their ICON tools(very nice) and quite a few of their Hercules cordless(also very good). However, would never buy their "P" line of tools due to breakage a tolerances, especially if generating a lot of torque where one could SEVERLY injure themselves.

I have the Snap-On BJP1 ball joint press. Paid about $800 for it too. And to be honest though it’s good I should have looked for a better deal. Does it work yes but for the price I could have done better. Maybe the Matco/OTC version with the ball detents, because the snap spring clips really suck. Once they lose tension the adapters just fall out and you have to keep opening them back up and it’s just a hassle. But I would buy the Icon one if I had the chance. Save myself the money and hassle of warranty.

My girlfriend's son works for harbor freight. It's not about the tools. It's not about the quality. It's not even about the affordability.....
It's all about the discounts rebates and rewards.
There isn't a retailer in the market right now. Doesn't matter if it's gasoline, or tools. They all have a gimmick they're selling. And that gimmick is, discounts rebates and rewards.
Does con scheme has been around since the invention of the bubble gum machine.
Because the guy who invented, discounts rebates and rewards. Had a very interesting name. He was called the world's greatest con man.
And this is legitimately what retailers think that we want for our money. To be conned, by an ancient con man.
America has an epic and verifiable relationship, with con men.

  • @guyconnell2250
    @guyconnell2250 8 месяцев назад

Let's assume the quality is the same as the big boys. It may or may not be.
The choice you/we gotta make is whether you pay a substantially lower price for a tool that looks the same but had all the R&D done already by one of the big boys. Copying a good existing tool, which HF does shamelessly, relies on the R&D done by someone else. And R&D involves cost which has to be recaptured when selling the tool. We let our consciouses be our guides.
Kind of like buying one of the Chinese knockoff Harley Davidson copy bikes. Not the real thing but close, and for a fraction of the price.
I agree, the warranty process (on some but not all) HF tools is arguably easier. You do have to make sure what the warranty is though when you buy as a lot of HF stuff only has a 90 day warranty.
My personal experience is that the quality on the higher end HF stuff is good, maybe almost the same as the big boys but not quite the same. So, depening on how often you will use the tool, it will quite likely work for you just fine for a fraction of the price. I cannot speak to heavy daily use though. There is where that extra, say 10%, of quality and reliability could be the difference between a broken tool and an incomplete job, especially on something that, by definition, is going to get "abused". Like a ball joint press.
Also, HF has become masterful at wrapping up big boy copy tools in eye catching packages. People will buy just because of an eye catching color or tray or box. I find that kind of amusing actually. But, I digress.

Harbor Freight already failed with a larger expensive scan tool. I haven’t seen it in store in a couple of years. Forgot the name of it Zurich something like that.
Harbor Freight customers didn’t buy it. I think it was a complete failure. I bought stubby ratchet which the handle is mostly all shaped like a handle grip, but has so much back drag it’s unusable.
There’s something wrong with everything on harbor freight. There are no diamonds in the ruff in this store.
I bought the Badlands off-road Jack, but I haven’t used it yet. Let’s just hope it works when I need it! Ain’t cheap either $300.
Most people ain’t gone pay 40% of the Snap-on price for harbor freight tools. The Badlands jack is unique though. Haven’t seen one like it. Maybe there are others out there idonno.
I try not to use ball joint presses anymore. It has to be actually worn out before I sell those parts. Contrary to popular belief, ball joints have a tolerance and aftermarket parts might be worse than what you already got.

  • @thooks1234

I don't get the bias against Harbor Freight from the "Professional" Technicians.... I can't imagine Snap-On tools being THAT MUCH BETTER. The number one reasoning from Pro Techs as to why they buy SO tools? "Oh, if I need to warranty it, the truck comes to me, I don't have to leave the shop." That insinuates that it IS going to break and that you NEVER leave the shop. If you really, really, really need the tool, the SO guy ain't going to run over to your shop and be there within an hour. I bet most techs are within 1 hour from a Harbor Freight. And If you're going to buy HF tools, you're most likely buying them from a store near where you live or work.
The Icon line is very good. Heck, the Pittsburgh stuff is good.
I'm not a Pro, I'm just a driveway weekend warrior DIY'er. But I do everything I can on my fleet of 5 vehicles (Most all Toyota, so it's mainly maintenance and such). But I have absolutely zero desire to stop by a shop where I see the SO truck and buy stuff. And I work near a LOT of car repair shops and the local SO guy has a presence on FB that I could connect to.... No way do I want to spend 4-8X the money on a Snap On tool that I could go to HF, buy the Icon brand and most likely never have to warranty.
Here's another point - with the cost of living today, ANY mechanic would be plain out STUPID to buy took truck tools at the cost they are. Why on Earth would you spend money on something that you could buy MUCH cheaper and have more money leftover for food, housing and transportation for your family? A $2000 tool box setup versus a $20,000 setup? $6,000 worth of tools versus $60,000? Why? You can literally buy 8-10X as many tools from Harbor Freight as you can a tool truck for the same money.

outside of their ICON line, most of it is still chinesium, but I have to say any of the ICON stuff I have bought has been good, quality, reliable tools...snap-on may brush it off thinking they won't take their customers, but if customers can get 80% of the quality/durability of snap-on for around half what snap-on charges, you are correct...they would be remiss to brush it off and not take it seriously.
