- The Troy Colts Marching Band gave a sneak preview performance right after stepping off the bus after a week at band camp! Congratulations to the Lemke Studio oboists!
#marchingband #doublereed #bandnerd
those sousaphones are living the high live jumping around like that
That's my favorite part!
I play oboe and percussion is my backup but the thing is, I am short and thin, but I played the BIGGEST bass drum we had. I couldn't see anything and people teased me about the drum being the same size I was. Gotta love being in band 😂
Yes, band friends are great! You want to make sure the instrument isn't too heavy -- dont' want to get back problems!
All of our oboe and bassoons double instruments, 2 of them do saxophone, and the others do flute
Saxophone is a good double for oboe!
but yet, y'all have bass clarinets in a marching band?? Bass clarinets are concert band instruments, just like the bassoon and oboe.....Sooooooooooo
That's how they do it here!
well technically speaking we can say that for any wind and percussion instrument on the field, they’re just better suited for marching unlike bassoon and oboe, in fact many schools march bass clarinets
the problem is the reeds. double reeds are more prone to breaking with movement because they have no plastic support, only the wood. bass clarinets and bari saxes are both single reeds so they're less expensive and a little easier to march (double reeds cost a fortune)
not to mention they have neck straps and bassoons don't
I March bass clarinet
@@gravel35 Bassoons do have neck straps but they can really easily mess up your technique and you kinda need to relearn your instrument and when you go back to concert season it can mess you up also there are not many oboes so they just would
Not be heard on the feild lol ans for some of the fingerings on oboe marching would be really hard
Both our only bassoons play saxophones and our only oboe is in football
Y’all got a big band wow, that was like 8 bass clarinets I think I creamed
Yes, it's a big band, although before the pandemic it was even bigger!
Tbh, bass clarinets don’t belong in marching band either 🤷🏾♂️
@@red2k4 but theyre a lot less dangerous and easier to march as. we have a bari sax in our band and they march just fine
Wdym you think you creamed💀
Last year in marching band we had an oboe at my school but we don’t really care that much about it I think at one of the band reviews we got a 4 for marching
Marching with oboe is pretty risky!
Bassoon😭😭😭 my favorite
There's always concert season!
Me personally, I wanted a very similar experience to the oboe when joining marching so I picked the trumpet
I've played some Baroque music where the oboe and trumpet really are similar!
And here I am playing English Horn for my marching band show this year...
For those who don't know English Horn is a double reed instrument in the oboe family.
So you have a solo I'm assuming because I don't think you're gonna march with it
@@krysztof6917 Yeah it's a solo, I'm also my band's drum major so I won't be marching but I still find it funny that my director is making me play it instead of giving the solo to a flute instead. 🤣
The English horn solo from William Tell was in our marching show a few years ago -- see another reel on this channel. That's only the 2nd time I've heard of EH in a show! Have fun & good luck! (Plus, I hope your instrument has a synthetic top or liner!)
im bassoon so im either color guard or a clarinet
Double reeds have choices!
@@lemkestudioi mean ive done both so that's probably what im doing this marching season
yeahhh when there is concert band jazz band marching band and pep band it’s difficult as an oboe. i don’t have time for pep band. my marching band doesn’t have color guard or twisters so i play clarinet. and for jazz band i play trumpet. but in concert i get to play oboe
It’s great you get to play oboe in concert! ✨
I play oboe and go to pit for marching season I tried out for Colorguard but didn’t make it but the percussion folks are way nicer the Colorguard are stuck up while percussion like to have fun and I’m also playing in the percussion ensemble which has is own concert
That's great! Lots of my students also do percussion during marching season.
@@lemkestudio at my school the other two oboes did piccolo one did put for the show cause she couldn’t March much on her knee and then one of the upcoming oboes will March clarinet
i play bassoon and oboe and march clarinet
You're versatile!
I play oboe in concert band and switch to flute to march and also jazz band (which is funny because I'm actually better at flute since I've played it longer)
It's great that you're so versatile!
If you play Bassoon or Oboe I would suggest doing pit or Bass clarinet for marching season
It's a good idea, because you don't have to change your embouchure!
Me who plays bassoon and baritone 😭
Double reed family!
Im switcing to percussion
Easier on the embouchure!
I play oboe and bassoon, so I play alto clarinet in marching band
Go double reeds!
I spin my bassoon like a flag :)
😮
or be a mellophone ;D
A student of mine has played mello in marching band!
we have a bassoon player in my band that i absolutely hate because he’s so rude to me (he throws his shoes at me) and he plays the trombone for marching band season but there’s days when i want to throw that bassoon into a ditch….
Fortunately, not too many double reed players are rude! 😊
I played a different instrument and chose saxophone
Saxophone and oboe have similar fingering, and many of my students choose sax for marching.
How many students does this school have!?
About 2,100 total in grades 9 - 12.
@@lemkestudio Woah! That's a big school!
They can also do football
Chester Pitts!
Dang I play bassoon
Double reeds are great! They don't march, but sometimes they're featured from the sidelines.
I’m British, so marching band isn’t really a thing here. I didn’t not realise how big it could get holy shit. 😳
An uncle of mine is British, and is a great fan of the military marching bands!
snares are so sloppy
This was their sneak peek performance right after band camp. They did a great job at Festival!
WAY OUT OF STEP
This was their sneak-peak performance, and they had just got off the bus from band camp. Just wait til festival!
Some yall ain't in step
The band had just returned from band camp and there were many new marchers.
@@lemkestudio gotcha. Band camp sure tired me out lol
