The first couple of minutes completely killed the chances of getting a PS portal. I can’t believe that they didn’t build a web browser onto the ps portal to be able to access local hotspots and complimentary WiFi.
Not only that, but no Bluetooth is some BS, and you can stream the other PS apps to it, like Netflix etc, just games. Common sense must have features that are missing make the Portal a no go for me.
ive got the ps portal and im telling you that you need a fast internet connection with low latency to play comfortably, so it is not a device to use with hotels wifi connections, cause they usually have speed limitations and very high latency... a strong cellular connection is much better than any hotel wifi connection... so if the only deciding factor was playability at hotels you will be disappointed with both the ps portal and the iphone paired with a backbone... but i dont believe you wanna drop such an amazing device like the ps portal for such a small limitation, i do believe you dont wanna buy either device, you just wanna criticize Sony to get a few easy likes, and now that you got them you can shut the hell up again
I probably would never buy any of these, but I was planning on buying one, it would be the backbone. It's half the price of the portable, I can use any form of earbuds or headphones, I can play any game outside of ps remote play.

The backbone doesnt do emulation. Your phone does. The backbone is just a controller, and an awfull one too. There are much better controllers for less money. Backbones whole marketing revolves around convincing the less tech minded that it turns your phone into an Xbox or PS5. It doesnt, your phone is already a remote player.
Bout the backbone for Xbox gamepass now that there's a USB C version of the playstation one, backbone is amazing I've actually been using it in my home as a controller for my playstation instead of the regular controllers

There was a really good deal on the backbone lightning so I decided to give it a try and was pleasantly surprised by the impressive quality of PS Remote Play on my iPhone 14. Expected it to be choppy like GamePass, but the high bitrate made it look like native 1440p which is crazy. the low latency shocked me to, I remember trying out gamepass a few years ago and it was total shit so they really came a long way because this almost feels like I am playing on a dedicated handheld. I didn't think I'd enjoy Backbone this much. Now, I use it to replay The Last of Us and Uncharted series in bed. Heard some news about Portal being capped at 7mbps bitrate - if true, that would be what would make me go the backbone route.
Dang, I'm so glad I watched this before running out to buy a PlayStation portal. My hotel has the web browser requirement to connect to the Internet, so thank you for highlighting that. For my situation the backbone will be the better device.
I have a portal As a dad to a young baby less then a year When he watches tellytubbies I use the portal to play Tekken or astros playroom or even Spiderman
The largest downside to the backbone is - it uses your phone. I use my phone as a phone and for just about everything I would use a PC for, so my battery is already under a lot of stress and gaming is just going to drain that even more. Not everyone uses their phone like I do. Not everyone is going to care about the same issues I do. They both have different pros and cons and address different needs. I have both and prefer the portal.

I am literally on the phone all the time messaging friends, watching RUclips and using it constantly at work to keep in touch with co-workers and management. I think the portal would be a better choice for me as I need a standalone gaming system and to be able to use my phone at all times. I also don't play PC games nor do I have access to Xbox games nor do I has any Xbox games so there's really no reason to have the backbone as I would only want to play Playstation games on the go. If I wanted to play Nintendo games I would bring my Nintendo switch

Personally I don't like PS4/5 or Series X gaming on portable devices because of the small screen. I'd prefer to do my gaming at home in the best conditions both visually on a big screen OLED, with the best audio through my ATMOS surround sound system with my behind seated on a comfy couch. I also hate to wear any kind of headphones or earbuds while gaming which works out great primarily being a solo gamer.

You have to also mention that the ps play app literally works without a WiFi connection. On my 16 pro max, and 5g WiFi, it honestly runs pretty good without a WiFi connection.

I want to lay down on my bed and play like it’s 2008. I will NOT be using my iPad. Nor will I be using a separate controller with a tiny ass phone screen. It’s about the portable experience.
The PS portal has been a nice surprise. I took some time hardwiring my PS5, upgrading my router and it works absolutely amazing so far. Almost zero difference to my PS5. I did consider the backbone but I figured with how much you pay for the backbone you may as well splash and get the dedicated hardware from PS. It'll be a game changer when you can stream PS games from the PS catalogue directly to the portal with no need to download them/have a PS5.
If you use the back bone for long enough, it gets dull. Holding it feels cramped. And playing triple A titles feels meh. The portal feels really nice and actually easier to hold for longer periods of time bc of comfort. I kept telling myself I'll never get a portal, but after the updates to it being a cloud device in jumped on it. And it can be used as a 2nd ps5 controller for couch Co op
Plus the store markup on the portal nowadays are insane! Bought the backbone for 64.99 with 25usd gift card. Planning to get portal too in the future tho if prices levels the msrp

The portal is awesome. I dont know how people can critisize Sony for creating a service like remote play, allow people to use it completely free for over 10 years, and finally give people the option of upgrading to more premium comfortable alternative. Some people happy playing on their phone for free. Some people want an expensive portable PC. I just want to stream PS5 on a comfortable device for a good price, and Portal meets that need. I play every day at work over 5G and works flawlesly. But I dont understand the love for Backbone. Its just a controller. If you prefer remote play on your phone, stick to using a dualsense, and buy a phone holder. Its cheaper and more comfortable. Its what Ive done for the past 10 years, before buying the Portal.

Considering that both require a wifi connection, and smartphones are beginning to have the ability to connect to wifi and simultaneously activate a hotspot tether, then I think the lack of browser on the Portal is a minor inconvenience for now. Add to it that the Backbone uses the smartphone, meaning faster battery depletion, and it becomes less appealing to me as I don't want to deplete my phone battery like that for gaming. The Portal is $200 vs $100, but it's a dedicated device that includes a quality portable size screen with arguably better construction quality. I think the Portal is the winner unless you want the flexibility to play other platforms. Great video.

A few days ago an update was released to support wifi hostpots that require web sign in, I still wouldn’t buy it though.

Just use the bsp d8/9 instead of the backbone, now you can use a tablet as the screen instead of a smartphone.
I would suggest comparing the PS Portal to the Logitech G Cloud instead, since both are dedicated devices and more similar on price.
