  • @NMaktima Fly Fishing and I went out for a day on a river in Northern New Mexico. The topic of today's video is understanding the sighter. The sighter is a piece of colored nylon built into your euro nymphing leader that aids in strike sections and understanding how your flies are riding in the water column. Understanding where your flies are in relation to the sighter and "reading" sighter angles can help you put more fish in the net. Thank you for watching!

    I'm gonna try to keep this brief but wanted to comment to say thanks for the info in your videos and thanks for dedicating the time and effort it takes to make them. Better than a book or reading articles about technique, for sure. Today was my 2nd time ever using a Euro style leader on the stream (identical to your leader formula) and I caught 14 trout and a smallmouth bass on nymphs. Everything I applied today from reading the sighter to casting to rigging up my flies was all based on info I learned from your videos. It works! You rock. Thanks a bunch! Now I need another fish rod. I was using an 8'6" 5wt, my only rod! Shoulder hurts, need more reach!

      Adam, really appreciate the kind words. Glad you’re having success and more importantly having fun! The 11ft 3wt shadow X is a great rod if you decide to dive in head first !

      @@AboutTrout I'm definitely going to get the right tool for the job. The stream I fish most of the time, close to my home here in Kentucky is perfectly suited for Euro nymphing and I don't imagine I'll ever go back now. It works too well! Thanks for the rod suggestion. I look forward to more of your content!

    This is an awesome video guys! My biggest struggle with the euro setup is wind! Gonna try and use some of your tips on the next trip out. I typically just toss a bunch of weight on there which hasn’t worked and you just validated it 🤣 bummer about losing that big fella ...but glad to know I’m not alone in missing some of those big guys!

    • @AboutTrout
      @AboutTrout  4 года назад +1

      Definitely , hucking a bomb(big beaded fly) off the bat can work but you sacrifice presentation. Like Norm said, compressing that “sail” you can really drive the flies down. Loosing that fish was a heart breaker but hey it happens to all of us , there’s always next time .

    I am just getting started in Euro nymphing and finding it very difficult to read the sighter in wind and also casting since it is very different from traditional fly casting. This video gave me some good insight on dealing with the wind but I find it hard to see any subtle takes since my sighter is already moving so much in the wind. I feel like I am improving on casting with no wind but struggle when there is even the slightest breeze. Also seem to have trouble getting any distance consistently. I can get my fly where I want it maybe 3-4 times for every 10 casts. Can you do video breaking down the cast and movements and dealing with the wind? BTW found you through Ben aka Huge Fly Fisherman and so glad I did! Your videos are super helpful getting started Euro nymphing! There's just not as much quality videos out there about it and super excited to find you!!!

    Fabulous video. Thanks much. Now, for a suggestion. It would be great to shoot a video in which you show the actual range of movements of sighters when a fish takes. In other words, a video that shoes sighters signaling strikes.

      Thanks for watching. I totally agree with you there . We only had one day to film and getting dialed in on the sighter to show it would take some time . Definitely will try to capture that at some point . Thanks for the feed back

    • @AboutTrout

      Depends on the situation and how you want your flies to ride . Two flies in one band of the water column or one in each. Heavier On point is one in each

    Great video guys,
    I'm new to tight line/Euro Nymphing. On the days where I have a lot of success I find my indicator is tight (no bow or "sail") and directly under my rod tip. When I am leading with the rod tip I have not had any luck. I understand the more vertical the sighter the deeper you are and the opposite being true with a more horizontal presentation. If you had to guess, what is the main difference between my success with a completely vertical sighter (directly under rod tip) and lack there of with any amount of leading the sighter?

    • @AboutTrout
      @AboutTrout  3 года назад +1

      You’re probably fishing heavier . If it works it works . There’s a balance between leading the flies and engaging them to pulling them . If you’re leading and pulling the flies you could be loosing depth and also getting an unnatural drift . With that being said fish will eat pulled flies . Hope that helps !

      @@AboutTrout Thanks for the tips! If you are looking for video a suggestion, I'd love to see a video of how fishing farther away from you (across) effects your sighter angle, and fly depth in the water column. You could include how you would change the distance from sighter to point fly to compensate. I saw in one of your comments on another video you went to UM! Small world man, I started there in '08!
