  • Good Day, well met from 1588. Áine and I take a stroll up the road from the shop to Kentwell hall to step back in time to the Tudor period to 'High Summer'. We meet a great bunch of reenactors who help explain what the Tudors did with all things wool! We get to hear about the whole reenacting hobby and see them in role at work as a Tudor.

If you’re a reenactor then let us know! We would love to know what you do and where you do it. Are you a Kentwellie like the group we chatted to? We’d love to know 👍🏼

I've been to visit the Woolpatch before though am overdue for a visit.I am one of the gentry at Kentwell. I also wear wool but the kind I use would be very expensive at the time. I have gowns made of wool satin. Beautifully smooth and shiny. I also use other fabric such as sik taffeta, satin or velvet.

another Kentwellie here, I usually answer to the name of "Anni the Cripple". Like Beth, i do have a surname but honestly, I don't think anyone has ever used it! You caught a brief clip of me in my "happy place" - propped up against the middle beams of the woolshed carding, ready to spin. There is a magic to Kentwell, I think you caught glimpses of it in the film, and it restores the soul.

@@myladyswardrobe Would be lovely to see you again, I love mixing with the gentry of course!!! This is what I love about you reenactors - the time and effort put into making your own outfits and the detail of it all. I'd love to see these, so pop in with pictures!! I'm only just entering into the dress making world so you can teach me so much! Stuart

@@TbirdAnni Hey Anni the Cripple! Thanks for your message. Another Kentwellie! I love it. What a happy place it is - I fell in love with the whole setting. I can fully understand why you go back and back - that magic as you say is there everywhere. I'd like to go back and try capture more of it on film. Wonderfully restorative for sure. Stuart

Absolutely fantastic video! Another Kentwellie here (although I haven't been back for a while). I've been doing more 20th-century stuff lately - it's so nice to see the practical skills that Kentwell showcases!

Hopefully, when this weird time gets better, we'll go back up and film more as it's fascinating what the re-enactors do, and how they make all their garments. Stuart

Really interesting blog, was amazing to get such an good behind the scenes look. This was fascinating and full of so much good information.
I am interested in history bounding and love the Victorian/Edwardian eras, but have always been fascinated at how to make things from scratch, even the yarn.

Aww thanks for this Felicity, it was a lovely afternoon up there doing it. I was bowled over at the level of detail and expertise from them all. There is something so special about those two era's you mention isn't there. I've learned a lot about yarn making from scratch, can't wait to get dyeing more with woad when these restrictions ease a bit and I can go to my mums to dye more yarn! Stuart

You're very welcome, thanks for taking the time to comment. Hopefully when the virus is all in the past, we can go back up and film more of their work! Stuart

I would love to be a Tudor re-enactor, I’ve been to Kentwell Hall many times and thought how fab it would be to participate!

It would be fab....I can see why many re-enactors have done it for for years now! It's lovely at Kentwell. Fingers crossed they'll be all back at it this summer hey. Stuart
