    Hey!! Wasn’t expecting a shop tour - can’t believe this one popped up two days after we sorted out the counter and the ‘homely’ end wall - you’ll have to do a follow up with the new changes!! It was so enjoyable to mooch round with you two again - and thanks SO much for telling the world about my rash!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Thank you both for taking time to do this vlog - you’re terrific, the duo that works fabulously - and the very best bit ? It was the cellar walk!! See you both soon, my chicks! Jen ❤️❤️

    In South Africa we get Double Knit, Aran and Chunky. Sometimes there is a weight called Quick Knit, which I think is Double Knit. We also have both 3 and 4 ply yarns. Most of the yarn sold is acrylic. Cotton and bamboo is very popular. Wool, angora, and alpaca is hard to find - much too expensive. South Africa is one of the largest producers of merino but this all goes overseas. Mohair is available in very small quantities. The "cupcake" trend is huge, as is the variegated colour yarns. Knitting and crochet has become quite popular in the last few years as people create blankets for Nelson Mandela Day. Even male prisoners have become involved.

      Thanks for this Dorothy, you have 3ply too! Wow that's thin. Shame most of the yarn is acrylic. You'd think they would have a lot of wool yarn as it's so breathable too compared to acrylic. I'm very surprised it's hard to find and such a shame therefore that it's then expensive. As you say, you've got a lot of Merino there!! Bamboo is getting popular over her too I do like knitting with it. Yes, the Cupcake thing is very much a thing over her too this year. A lot of companies are now making their own, to the point where the same colours are appearing with different companies. A lot of the yarn is spun and created in Turkey, so once they have 'created the yarn' other companies then choose similar or different colour ways.
      Nelson Mandela Day? Oh wow how lovely. Great that the male prisoners are getting involved. Crafting can help so many issues for sure :) Stuart

    What a charming shop! I keep hoping that work will send me to Cambridge again, so I'll have an excuse to visit. Here in the US, the three most common weights are called fingering, DK (always said as an acronym), and worsted. Bigger shops also carry lace weight and chunky. Only the fiber nerds here know about how yarn is plied and spun, so you don't hear terms like 2-ply or worsted spun among typical knitters. The terminology seems similar in Canada. On a different note, at the start of the video I could swear that Stuart said it's Willy Wednesday. That would an entirely different kind of podcast. :D

    • @TheWoolpatch
      @TheWoolpatch  5 лет назад

      Aww cheers Rob. Oh blimey yes - lets hope work does send you over. Cambridge isn't far at all - only an hour. Thanks for sharing what weights you use in America. We do't use the term fingering much but it is increasing over her as many indie dyers use it. interesting to hear that bigger shops carry chunky, I understand about lace weight. Is chunky perhaps not a popular weight? Stuart
      As for me saying Willy Wednesday....I'm going to have a look now. I am know to get a tad tongue tied, so could have easily said that haha.

      JonBoyNY aww cheers! We wanted to give more of an insight into the shop for all those of you Miles and miles away. You’re New York yeah? Oh there are some yarn shops there hey? We have yarn shops here by sadly not close...but that is in the countryside. Whereas you have 5 or 6 right close. I’d love to do a yarn crawl like you have but it would be very difficult haha. @@TheWoolpatch I don't, really. I usually knit fingering-or 4-ply for you ;)-, sport, DK or worsted. But right now I'm doing a project in which I'm double-stranding a lace yarn (2-ply?) and a worsted yarn, to create some kind of aran-weight yarn.

      Aww thank you - that's lovely to hear. I am trying hard to make it welcoming. I know what it's like as a shopper myself, when you go into small shops and the owner/assistant is in close vicinity it can be a struggle to get a balance of breathing space for the customer to browse and also not to jump on them and put them off! You also don't want a small shop to be too cluttered or too empty and lifeless!! Stuart (PS Thanks for taking the time to comment too 😁)

    Loved the shop tour. Looked like a great place in the community to hang out. I do have 1 question. Did you call the mannequin your jumper is on "Mr. Hunk?" I could swear when you moved it you called it Mr. Hunk. If you did that is genius. -A

      Hey Toni, Glad you liked the tour round my little shop! The knitting bags are £46. The Scheepjes Cakes 'Whirl' are phenomenal. the 1000 metres makes a very big shawl as most cakes that I've had before only have 600 odd metres. I will be selling the blue wool soon. It's the wool dyed by myself using the natural plant dye Woad. Opening times are 10am to 4.30pm Tues to Sat. But all our stock is on www.thewoolpatch.com so you can always see what we have in. :) Stuart

    This was lovely but you didn't mention the quilts that were hanging on the wall? I would love to know the pattern for the half square triangle one that was behind you Stuart near the front door. I agree with you about making a shirt similar to the blue one you made before it would be so cute. Another thing you could do with that fabric range as well is to make a small baby quilt. I made one and posted on my Instagram that is green, black and white spots and you could make it up in a day using the fabrics in that line, may encourage sales?? I think it takes 4 fabrics. A friend of mine that sold fabric told me once after a similar situation that she had to stop buying her fabrics by what she liked the best because those were generally the ones that didn't sell well for her at all!
    Oh my gosh there are so many of those wool yarn balls that I would just love. Question for you what size are the needles you used to make "The Montrealer". How long did you say that you and Aine have been knitting? I absolutely love that you promote other peoples crafts in your shop. I used to sell my candles out of a shop years ago. What is Jen up to haven't seen a comment from her in a while is she alright?? Going to watch the vlog again just in case I missed something I wanted to comment on.
    Okay I was astounded to hear you have to pay for the ability to play music in your shop?? WHAT????? I don't understand so if you are in your home listening to the radio you have to pay for that or is it just because it's a shop??

      🤣🤣🤣all is well, Angela - thank you!!! Jen ❤️

    • @TheWoolpatch
      @TheWoolpatch  5 лет назад

      Hey Angela! After your comments I got making! It covers that bare bit of wall behind the door. So this little quilt was inspired by Zen Chic who I'm a big fan of. Her pattern is called 'Throwing' www.brigitteheitland.de/shop
      It's half square triangles which are great for beginners like me. I love how it disaapears into the white, with a few pops of orange amongst the blues.I will look on your insta for that pattern, but I will try and make another shirt out of the 'spectacle'. Will be good to develop and reinforce my dress making skills.
      The point you make about buying fabrics you like to what you think people will like has been plaguing me for the last year. I tried buying a floral range that I didn't like but my rep said that my customers that are 'classic' patchwork fans may like. It didn't sell well, and maybe because I didn't fully like it - that came across too? So I said i'm only buying stuff I like! But then you have to find the people that like what you like.....that's just as hard. It's such a tough one. Second guessing all the time and don't forget your buying it up to 6 months in advance too so you're guessing what people may like in the future!!
      I knitted 'The Montrealer' on 4.5mm and 4mm needles. The pattern says worsted yarn. I used DK. I've been knitting since I have had the shop, so nearly 3 years now. I didn't knit whilst I was a teacher. Not sure about Áine - not as long I don't think. I love promoting other peoples work in the shop. Jen is good, she's busy with her Journalling and we did a fun little vlog at the weekend with Ting and my Montrealer friend Craig - it was a chatty vlog so i'm sure that will be fun to watch, if a little different haha. Me and Jen and Ting are off to a big Craft shop tomorrow so that will be fun to look round to get ideas and to spend!
      Yes, as for music, all shops HAVE to have a license to play music her int he UK. As I said on the vlog - technically it's entertaining so the music people need to get paid for using their music. It's all done on the size of your shop and what you want to play. The radio for me was the cheapest option. If I wanted to play CD music or Spotify etc it would have increased a lot more. And yes, if we are at home we have to have a licence too. It's all bundled in the TV licence. To watch TV or Radio or on demand, watching Tv on the internet or through the TV, you have to a licence. It's about £150 a year. It's all controversial here at the moment as the BBC have no said over 75 year olds have to pay again (they have had it free before).
      There are so many little things that shops have to pay for....business rates, Rubbish disposal etc. Your outgoings soon mount up. It's really difficult. Since having my own shop I have a huge amount of respect for the self employed who run their own shops! Stuart :)

    very lovely shop!
    when it comes to acrylic yarn-i hate all the yarn snobs that try to shame people that like to work with it. first of all-not everybody has a ton of money and also: not everybody wants to work with animal fibers. i also think there are great premium acrylic yarns out there that are great for many many projects and i dont see a point in telling anyone wich yarn there are allowed to use and wich not right? and lets be honest-if those people where 100% right with their hate towards acrylic yarn than why does it exist in the first place and why do millions of people buy and love it?
    its the same with crochet hooks for example-i personally love my furls odyssey hooks but i would never ever shame anyone who likes working with a 10€ set from amazon. as long as it works and makes you enjoy the art its totally fine and nobody should ever tell you otherwise :)
