- So we'll probably never sound like Jaco... but why not have some fun with it? In this Jaco Pastorius bass solo lick breakdown, I'll turn you onto a cool way to play over dominant chords using the lydian dominant scale.
I'll explain a couple different ways to analyze this lick, plus important tips on how to actually integrate this and other licks you learn into your playing, so that your improvising actually gets juicier.

Thank you very very much for all your sincere and personal work and SOUND ! (as opposed to Thousands of other bassists using the same JP bridge pickup sound thinking they are Jaco !) ♪ ♥
Very useful lesson.Thanks man!
Nice to see you again Josh. On the one hand, I tried this out on my 4-string 20-fret P-Bass and it still sounded amazing. Again not like Jaco Pastorius, but with round wounds, it can cut through very well and still sound awesome. On the other spectrum, I should try this out on my Ibanez 6-string 24-fret bass and see what happens with that. also has round wound strings on it. I gave my ESP 5-string 24-fret bass away to a friend of mine who didn't have a bass because he is mostly a guitarist. But that's because he gave me a an electric guitar that a friend of his had just laying around. Anyway, I also tried some legato slidy bendy vibrato stuff with this lick to make it sound more humanly vocal. And I'm going to throw in some little pintch harmonics here and there to experiment with. Again, thank you for this lesson filled with inspiration.
Fantastic tutorial thank you.
Amazing insight you just gave us. Thanks.

Ooooh you still postin on this account?
I'm back baby!
I hear "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" in that lick. "Cry Me A River" okay, but it feels more PP Hat, to me. Perhaps a Mingus/Mitchell nod?
