Honestly, as some one who worked at a body shop - we wouldn't want to work on that first car, even for the full money. We'd recommend it even if it was a "dads old car". We'd try to convince them because otherwise it becomes quickly a multi-year project. That would be an insane amount of metal work that would take hundreds and hundreds of hours. Even if I wanted the money I'd still say no because it'd be years to get to it.

    • @DiabIe37

@@DiabIe37 I know a shop that would do it and do a great job but it would involve a sit down with the owner and him basically telling you he will do what you want but he's being straight that it's going to make no sense for way too much money. He's done one or two jobs like that because he made absolutely sure they know what they are getting into and he knows what it's like to do it because of the memories. One was his dad's old Tornado who died of cancer and the other I know of was a cutlass for a guy whose son died.

I hope it will be smooth sailing from now, Jay. Car resto is always such a gamble, and its especially hard when you dig into a car that an enthusiastic owner brought in for some light work and you find out the car is unsuitable for driving or repair. :(

My dad bought a Torino brand new and kept needing to replace tires from being worn abnormally. After fighting with the dealership he took it to a frame shop and they proved the car was crooked. I guess they had dropped the car off the semi when it was delivered to the dealership. After that they gave him another car. Hopefully all your stuff starts coming together. I started fixing up my dad's old Silverado Big 10 and I just gave up on some of the body parts and ordered new sheet metal. Old cars always take more effort than you originally anticipate. My families favorites were the Triumph 2000's and TR's(UK). After about 20 years in service the parts needed to keep the cars on the road were getting hard to find, so we had to get the parts machined by engineers who had the same hobby.

Jay gives the definition of "Project Car" to all of us that have ever done this and says "nope". If I had the space I'd probably take this off his hands, because that thing is in amazing shape for my area. Project cars are usually done for the learning and love of the vehicle, not necessarily for the "sentimental" value. Jay's definition of "Project Car" = "Mint Condition, all I have to do is bolt on race parts". I've seen cars in SO MUCH worse shape. Heck, ever seen Boyd Coddington? Sheesh, contact him Jay, maybe he'll take it off your hands. Project cars are rarely about sentiment, I think I know TWO out of maybe 200 people that have done resto's for sentimental reasons. If this was 5 years down the road I'd probably grab that old body because in 5 years my retirement shop will be looking for projects, but until then...yea, no room and I'm not going to pay $100+/month to store that thing for 5 years waiting.

I feel the same, although in my case its more because I've gone off tech content in general rather than because of his actual uploads

@@fawncashew Yea, kinda hard to be interested in tech when what you want to do can't happen, I've been wanting to do a water cooled SFF build with a 3080, but even a lot of water cooling parts either aren't available or you might be able to back order

Just a tip from what I have seen, be VERY cautious with that transmission you get, since it is an automatic.
The problem is that a lot of shops do not know all the ins and outs of them, and it is the details that tends to get you, tiny things like the correct distance between the flywheel and converter and torque converter and transmission can actually destroy your transmission in less than a few miles.
I guess there is truth to the fact that a lot of people are now hitting the road and dragging them to Texas to Precision Transmissions, especially if you have performance aspirations as there are subtle things you can do to uprate these transmissions, both new and old.
And often that road trip on the back of a trailer can pay dividends compared to the price of ruined transmissions.

@JayzTwoCars I can't wait to see it done! You said 4l65e, are you gonna do an ls motor or lq? If so which one?? That things gonna be nasty! I have a 1990 foxbody mustang with a erl 454. It's an aluminum 5.3 liter that's sleeved on an engine dyno made 797 on e85. I love it. It's on a holley efi ecu, th400, back braced 8.8 and the whole 9 yards! Keep the updates coming i love cars :)

Alright Jay... I'm being dead serious here...
The KX in the background in the barn, if that's a 500 (hell even a 250 or 125, those things are insanely awesome and collectable) and you don't already own it, you need to...
That particular breed of 80s/90s big bore 2 stroke dirtbike is the pinnacle of death incarnate on 2 wheels...
Own it, cherish it, love it, ride it, feel it drag you willingly towards deaths sweet embrace on a cloud of 2 stroke fumes....

Heartbreaking bud, after all that work. Hope the '68 works out! Also the *Dong!* the doors make, so weird when all the gubbins are taken out. Also, more Tina plox... preferably before Thanksgiving!

I didn't know about this place until the free GPU giveaway. Interesting. I do not know a damned thing about restoring cars, but I love watching professionals work magic.
I wonder if we could get Jay to do a JayzTwoHouses?

That's what a good garage will tell you - I had to come to terms with getting rid of a family car that needs more work doing to it than it's actually worth. It's all well and good saying "do it yourself" until it's something like welding or electrical/reprogramming work

it’s always wonderful to see someone into things I enjoy with gaming and streaming and showing people the benefits of pc gaming / building ( even though O haven’t pulled the trigger building my own yet ) and pushing it further by showing the amazing ventures of other things outside the “ gamer box “ having passion and interest to car restoration or just cars in general builds depth to Jays personality and allows others to see reason to be more well rounded as a human

That's a shame about your old body, you never know what's lurking under the paint on an old car.
The new body looks like it'll clean up okay though. I can't wait to see this come together, I'm especially looking forward to when you overclock it 😁

I know on power nation they tackled a similar issue. I believe there work around was straightening body and placing it on a complete frame. Might be worth checking out. 👍

Next time you are considering media blasting to to renting a dry ice blasting machine. We use one at work. There is no mess at all. It is a little slower than abrasive media but the lack of clean up more than makes up for it.

My son told me you had this channel so thought I would come check it out. Have you thought at all about doing a project combining both channels? Full tech set up inside a car. Given todays tech with 12v, inverters etc IM sure it could be done. Maybe a 4x4 or van for off grid camping & gaming or even a RUclips Content creators set up. Combine the 2 worlds.

as i've said on a previous 68 video, you can literally buy a complete new body for likely less then you've spent on buying and prepping these two used bodies

The sucks, minus the ripples in the metal I had similar rust. I ended up replacing almost all of the sheet metal minus the roof and the inner shell. Had to cut around the vin and replace the dash. Even the subframe connectors were rusted out. I have a video posted of what it looked like after the first phase of work. It definitely costs more to restore a car this far gone than it is worth. Dang sentimental value..

you should consider vinyl wrapping the car with clear paint protection film when you paint it. It will deepen the color, especially black, and it will make it last way longer. and if it gets damaged you can just peel it and re-wrap that spot.
