I believe cutting off the top knots was to symbolize that they were no longer members of the Fire Nation and an act of humility. Basically acknowledging that they are now fugitives on the run. The fire nation is based off of Japan and its industrial age with how to say have so many technological advancements and machinery compared to the other nations. I believe back in the day of samurai’s a top knot was a symbol of honor, having it cut off was a sign of immense shame equivalent to death. This was shown in the movie The Last Samurai. The hair cutting was also in one of Jackie Chan’s movies where he has a ponytail and after the villain cuts it off he states “now you can never return” because having it cut off is such a sign of disgrace that he is banished/never allowed to return to The Forbidden City. Some of these countries are very strict on their policies.
This wasn't the first time Iroh has redirected lightning. In season 1 during the storm when zuko was saving one of his men from falling, there was a lightning strike and Iroh redirected it away. It was played slightly more comedic though, because he was smoking and covered in black soot and had this goofy expression on his face.
It was a genius idea by accident. If I remember correctly, the creators of the show told us that they did it so they were not confused on who shot which flame between a duel of 2 firebenders during the animation.
@@troyo3172yes she did, at 10:44 she shoots a single fireball. I get where you're coming from. But please remember that by the time this video is uploaded it's probably spent a week or two in editing and they've probably seen the next few episodes already. (Of course that doesn't mean just spoil away, but the color of her fire is honestly not that big a deal compared to some of the other bombs that could be dropped.)

Real underrated moment, Sokka's just like "you're asking for my opinion so there it is, but the decision is yours and I'm behind whatever you choose 100% no questions asked."
So as for the hair question. The fire nation is HEAVILY INSPIRED by ancient Japanese culture. And the top bun is a almost uniform level of accessory to the hair that is worn up like that by most fire nation military and the entire royal family. By cutting off their top knots Iroh and Zuko took the last step at this point in their journey completely renouncing their allegiance to the fire nation. As for lighting. Lightning bending is a special form of fire bending as you guessed. There are many "Special bending" techniques (no spoilers) however at this time (the last air bender series) Lightning bending is almost reserved and solely practiced by the fire nation royal family. We never even see grunts or generals use this power in any wide shots or in the background. Thus leading to the belife that this is a power reserved for the "Elite" in their society.
"You're a dick to him and don't deserve it" just wanna say while I get it. You gotta keep in mind. By this part of the story zukos suffered some insane abuse in his life. That scar and his banishment is more then most real life people have to go through today. The outbursts aren't how he really feels about iroh. It's his anger towards his father for hurting him and casting him out coming to the surface. His sister showing up, telling you your banishment is done and the one person in his life he wants acceptance from finally wants him back. Of course he's going to falter now, and instead of acting like the person iroh is trying to raise him to be, he's falling back on what he thinks his father expects of him.
Very true and well said. And something we all should keep in mind in real life when someone is acting like a dick. 9/10 there is an underlying reason, unfortunately in real life we don't get people's backstories like we do with Zuko 🤗
Iroh has bent lightning before in the storm episode or rather redirect lightning which is what he did to the lightning and Azula not absorbing it and lightning bending is a sub bending element for firebenders but is so rare that it's often believed that those of a royal lineage can lightning bend but skilled firebenders can do it, the next few episodes in this season will explain what lightning bending is and it's really cool
In Fire Nation culture, your hair is considered a manifestation of your honor. You only cut your hair if you have committed acts which are dishonorable and you in essence lose your social status in the fire nation. This scene was Iroh and Zuko essentially giving up their social status as members of the royal family.
Fire Nation is based on Imperilaist Japan Earth Kingdom is based on the Chinese Kingdoms Air Nomads were based on Nepalese/Tibetan Monks Water Tribes are based on Iniut people There are also sub-cultures in Fire, Earth and Water society that are based on smaller cultures as they do break away from the group but we haven't seen them yet
According to the Kyoshi novels Fire Nationals associate their top knots with their honor, something they take very seriously, Zuko and Iroh cutting them off is a ceremonial way of renouncing their heritage and position in the royal family. As for Zuko’s attitude, what you need to remember is that he’s a 16 year old boy desperately clinging to the hope that his father does love him (he doesn’t) and that the banishment is tough love they can leave behind them (nope). Lashing out at his uncle is his desperate attempt to protect that hope. Finally Azula, yes, she can fire bend. Lightning bending is a near-mythical technique very few fire benders come even close to, something like the Fire Nation’s answer to the healing powers associated with particularly skilled water benders. Azula’s preference for lightning over fire is a reflection of her perfectionism, and her elitist view of herself as better than anyone else wielding techniques they cannot.
Agreed. Zuko is an abused child. Like other abused children, significant others, or spouses, Zuko deems himself weak and unworthy of his abuser's love and attention.
The Earth Sage who joins the four elements into mud is based on "The Wizard" from the Arnold Schwarzenegger film Conan. That character was played by Mako Iwamatsu (RIP), who voices Uncle Iroh! I'm sure you've seen it before, but in Japan during it's high civil war period - the bit that everyone thinks about with Samurai, Ninja, katanas and constant fighting - in the 1600s, the topknot or "Chonmage" hairstyle was a marker of Samurai status. Cutting it off symbolised the rejection, or rather in this scene - acceptance of the loss - of status. The scene is presumably meant to reference a famous scene from The Seven Samurai, when Kanbe, a dignified, older samurai fallen on hard times, is willing to cut his hair and shave his head at a stream in order to disguise himself as a monk. it signals his willingness to demean himself to work, and to do good - something most of the famously haughty samurai would never do. You might also remember in The Last Samurai when two policemen forcibly cut the hair of Nobutada, Katsumoto's son, as the Samurai and their trappings have been outlawed. There have been in-universe explanations since then, but the writers had the Samurai stuff in mind at the time. If you've not seen it, The Seven Samurai is well worth a watch, if you're a film fan as a masterclass in action, and well ahead of it's time. General Fong is clearly an antagonist, but don't forget - the pressure he puts on Aang, he too is under. Imagine you've been fighting a war all your life, watching good men die, and there's a kid here with a superweapon that could end the war in a weekend, but he says he'll only use it at some point in the future when he's finished learning Karate. Wouldn't you save all the lives that'll be lost in the next year or so if the price is the happiness of some kid?
"I don't see glowing!" is a line that lives in my head rent free for some reason lol. I use that and the line Gary Oldman's character in The Fifth Element says "I am very disappointed!" whenever I am annoyed at something or someone isn't reacting how I expected.
This is sooo existing! Book 2 is what I remember the least of so this is gonna be great to see your reactions to this one! Also, when you mentioned that Electrical Heat could be an evolved form of Fire Bendeng, I want you to remember that thought 😉🤫
you guys are gonna love to hate azula. i swear, Azula is one of the best villains i've ever seen in animation, and Grey Delisle as Azula just KILLS it.
About blue flame: Azula has it. Nobody never explained why she has it, and only her, so far we know. But it looks cool. Electrical power is considered a "sub bending" skill. Water has healing, Air has spiritual projection, you will still see what earth can do, and fire has... thunder.
That last moment was of cultural significance for both Iroh and Zuko. Hit the nail on the head with the first guess! In many eastern cultures, ponytails for men were signifiers of both honor and status. Samurai for example kept their hair in ponytails as signifiers as their status, they served lords after all. It is also symbolic of submission, as in ancient China people who were to be executed if they didn’t wear their hair in a ponytail. Men who were defeated in combat were also forced to undo their ponytails, signifiers of their loss in honor and status. Zuko and Iroh are symbolically and literally ridding themselves of their status as Fire Natiok citizens. The Fire Nation in general as you know is heavily inspired by industrial China. Moreover, in universe how many other ponytails have you seen? It is a very Fire Nation hair style, meaning when you’re going on the run from the Fire nation with wanted posters everywhere, you want to look as different as possible. That, and yes - they did get whooped there for a moment. Iroh more symbolically that literally, as he was cleaning house. Symbolism is so cool.
@@DLites151 I can see connections with both considering imperialism isn’t a Japanese exclusive concept. Furthermore - with the literal chinese the series as well as fire-bending taking inspiration from Shaolin Kung Fu, a martial art developed in the Henan Providence of greater China, the influence extends beyond imperial Japan. The Japanese influence regarding their technological advancement is clear, but that’s not the only source of inspiration. Each of the four nations are a bit of a melting pot of a several of regions. The fire nation alone takes a lot from both east and southeast Asia. The creators of Avatar took from a multitude of nations as to not alienate one in regard to symbolism. No one wants their country to be seen as the “bad guy” in a given series, hence the mixture regarding culture.
12:44 Yes from what I can gather the top knots were reserved for royalty and nobility and voluntarily cutting them off is an act of humility but perhaps more importantly *renunciation*. Zuko and Iroh are renouncing an awful lot with this simple act: their royal status; their citizenship of the Fire Nation, and most importantly their allegiance to the mad Fire Lord. They are now free to seek their own paths.
The official introduction of Azula, as well as an explanation of why the Avatar State is so powerful, as well as info on its dangers. In regards to Azula's fire, it's blue because it's hotter than normal fire, due to her status as a prodigy.
Grey DeLisle is absolutely everywhere in the world of animation, but her work voicing Azula in this show is most likely her most famous and well acted role, she's so talented with such an iconic voice, and she's also such a cool person in real life. As for Azula herself, yeah, she's RUTHLESS. Last episode I wanted to joke that it must be embarassing for Zhao to essentially be replaced by a teenage girl, but nah she's crazy. You'll get to see more of lightningbending down the line including an explanation of how it works, but we actually already saw Iroh redirect some lightning during the storm episode, but this episode is the first time we've seen someone literally generate lightning.
Love to see the props for Sokka The other lowkey thing about Sokka this episode is when Aang wanted to give the whole thing a try? Sokka was on board with giving it a shot. Aang wakes up in the middle of the night, and says he thinks its a bad idea now? Sokka says Okay, you know best.
Gotta back your friends move. Just shows how much respect he has for Aang even though Aang is younger than Sokka...in terms of life experience at least 🤗
"I think she needs therapy" you have no idea! This was also a good episode for some of the lore, we learned a little bit about the avatar state, and we'll get more in the future! I will say though that for the general, and Jet, and a few other characters we'll be introduced to later, we see how the war has changed them. It's not really explained in the show much but lightening generation is a sub element of firebending, all firebenders can do it but the knowledge of how is hoarded by the rich and elite.
In confucianism the body is a gift from one’s parents. You can’t Purposely damage your body including your hair. That’s why they have long hair. By cutting their hair it’s Similar to cutting away from family. Btw this might not be accurate since there’s a lot of nuance missing since from translation and time period this is based on. Basically china has a marit system since ancient times about how honorable you are is based on how much respect your family/elders/ ancestors. Long hair and it’s importance’s change throughout the ages.
The hair knot in Asian culture is used a lot back in the day and specifically for japanese culture, the samurai would only cut their knots when they retire or losing their high status. In this case, it's the loss of their status as royals and citizens of the Fire Nation, knowing full well they are now fugitives.
Some have already talked about cutting off the top knots symbolize Iroh and Zuko literally cutting ties from the Fire Nation. Heavily inspired from Japanese culture. If you actually look at the Earth Kingdom soldiers, it's heavily inspired from Chinese culture. I actually find it ironic at 8:10 when the Earth Kingdom benders throw those giant frisbee looking stone wheels at Aang. The design for those is based off of Ancient Chinese coins/currency with the square hole in the center. My family always jokes about how the Earthbenders prefer throwing giant pieces of money to solve problems when they don't want to just throw rocks at you. XD
4:53 During a hot summer day, I had to utilize a 5-hour energy drink to finish my work day. (Former delivery driver.) I can definitely confirm that it was a hilarious and terrible idea at the time. Whatever they gave Aang had caffeine in it for sure because that scene always makes me laugh when he gets the zoomies.
Zuko and Iroh cutting off their hair at the end: What they cut off is called a top knot. It was a style mainly worn by samurai in Japan and was a symbol of their status in society. The act of Zuko and Iroh cutting off their top knots was a symbolic way to show how far they've fallen. In Book 1, Zuko was banished but still commanded a Fire Nation ship, and Iroh was a respected retired general. Now, the Fire Nation considers them wanted fugitives, and they certainly won't be accepted by the Water Tribes or Earth Kingdom. Azula's bending: It is a little visually confusing since her blue fire looks a lot like her lightning. An easy way to tell them apart is to listen to the sound effects. The lightning and fire have two different sound designs.
Azula does wield flames, her flames are just blue, which burn a lot hotter than red flames ^^ It can be a bit hard to catch on a first watch, cause they look a bit similar, but for the reference, whenever Azula used lightning here, she took some time to charge it. Zuko's outburst towards Iroh was harsh, but he *is* still a kid, too. Emotionally, it was easier for him to pretend Iroh was being petty, cause the alternative was considering his father truly doesnt care. And the way he immediately lights up when Iroh decides to come along shows that Iroh does in fact mean so much to him, he just can't express it well due to his emotional instability and all
Let's go! We've made it to Book 2! It's going to be a fun ride The sister - Azula, can bend fire as well as lightning. She did a blast or two in this episode, but it might have been easy to miss when you don't expect it because the flames she makes with her bending is blue
"I think she needs therapy.." ... Oh you have no idea my dear. Azula is on a different level. She would make Daenerys bend the knee.. in a political mind game of course.
The ponytail/hair cutting is a very symbolic action that many stories use. Many people told you it's a Japanese cultural honor thing, which is a very literal interpretation that doesn't make sense in this context. It means "becoming a new person", "going through a major change/metamorphosis". And also, on the surface, Iroh and Zuko were trying to disguise themselves. The ponytail cutting thing is in Avatar the Last airbender in a firebender setting. Its also in Legend of Korra, in a water tribe setting. Its also in Berserk, which has a European story setting. So to say its just japanese culture symbol of dishonor/loss/quitting is wrong.
I feel like this episode was to show that Aang is still young and inexperienced to younger audiences. I mean, if I were a kid I'd think "Oh, just do the Avatar state thing and get it over with? Why does the show need to drag that out?". Also, no spoilers, but I love Zuko's future design. Not that the ponytail was bad or wasn't iconic, but I wasn't too fond of it before.
Welp yall met Azula.. it only gets worse lol and as for the lightning youll find out in a few episodes so no spoilers but Azula did use her fire its just blue instead of orange and red like normal. Love the reactions like always :)
1:10 Poor Sokka. Guy loses the woman of his dreams (whom he knew for . . . what . . . a day?) and doesn't get anything to show for it? No ceremonial garb, no weapon used only by their most elite soldiers, nothing? The guy gets sh*t on so much in this show. 2:00 The scene where Azula shows herself to be a ruthless foe. Also, the scene where she shows her ass (metaphorically). The tides might not hesitate to dash the captain against the rocks, but they also won't hesitate to dash the *ship* against the rocks either, Azula. It's frankly a miracle that her first day on the job didn't end with her wrecking her own ship and marooning them all.
I'm pretty sure the top-knot cutting is a reference to Ashitaka doing the same in Princess Mononoke as a result of his forced exile from the Emishi people. Bryan and Mike loved that movie and Miyazaki generally.
This episode conveniently forgot Aang also had the help of the moon spirit to fight the fleet. The avatar state is powerful, but it wouldn't be safe to try to rush the fire nation by yourself with it.
Google AI assistant says that removal of the top knot associated with nobility signifies loss of power or status. Avatar fandom site says for Zuko and Iroh, it’s a renouncement of title, status, and pride. I think it’s for aesthetic reasons.
On lightningbending; It's not an either/or thing. It's an "I'm way more experienced/trained/powerful of bender than most," kinda thing. Think of lightningbending as the next level, or perhaps as a sub-class, of firebending. Maybe we'll see similar things in other elements down the road... On Iroh lightningbending; This is actually not the first time we've seen that. In the episode "The Storm" Iroh re-directed a natural lightning strike that nearly hit their ship. It wasn't explained at the time, but it was a hint of such a thing existing. On Azula; I believe we did see her throw at least 1 actual normal firebending attack this episode, near the end of her fight, however, you'd be forgiven for missing it as her flames were bright blue. This implies her flames are *that* much hotter than normal peoples. Lightningbending always has that tell-tale crackling energy sound to it, and you'll notice lightningbending has very distinct and usually slower hand movements as they charge and release the energy, it's not as quick as firebending. Hopefully you won't confuse Azulas blue flames for her lightningbending as they are two different things. On the Avatar state; So now we have a big downside to Aangs super-mode, and a good reason to not go overboard using it beside just "can't figure out how to control it yet." One interesting thing to notice here though; during the montage of the past avatars when they are performing those huge bending feats, notice how their eyes glow for just a second and then return to normal afterwards? That's them dipping into the avatar state, just for a second, and using its power for a single move before returning to normal. This is an important and advanced technique that is used to minimize the time spent in the avatar state, and thus reduce the risk of being killed permanently. This is what it means to be a Fully Realized Avatar. That's what Aang is ultimately working towards.
Why would you initially assume the general's plan is bad? Its actually the most reasonable direction to do....why do yall think aang cant defeat them using the avatar state?
Cutting the top means they gave up on their nation. They are ronin now. I said before this season is epic. And know you guys know more about the avatar state!
The cutting the hair part is something that the show doesn't go deep into, so it is open for interpretation. However seeing it as a parting from the fire nation is a good guess. Azula (zuko's sister did use fire in this episode. The lightning bending will be explained more in the series, as well as something else. so I won't say anything about that since It would give spoilers.
I personally never understood...why the rare power of “Lightning Bending” is a form of Fire Bending...if it is then it should be a special form of Air Bending, but thats just me... In Azula's case, i think it is just Sith Powers. Hands down :P It says. Certain firebenders are able to generate and manipulate lightning by separating the yin and yang energies. Lightning, also known as "the cold-blooded fire", is considered the purest form of firebending and the most powerful and dangerous technique.
Honestly it fits for both, hot and cold air makes lightning in real life, but fire benders manipulate their own energy, so they are doing the opposite with their own energy.
The fire nation is based upon Japan Culture. What Uncle Iroh has is what is called a Top Knot and what Zuko has is called the Warriors Tail. When you cut it off, it means you have been defeated in battle. It means that you know longer can have honor and pride. With this after losing to Azula they are needing to go on the Run. They aspect they are no longer part of the Fire Nation and loose the honor in the process. Have those on their head would fully show they are part of the Fire Nation. What is not good when you are on the run and all other nations hate you. Keep up the good work stared watching you from DBZ Abridged and then subscribed.
Notice Iroh never once took anything awful Zuko said seriously? It's because he understands that Zuko doesn't mean what he says when he insults him. He knows Zuko is lashing out because he's in pain. Oftentimes (especially as already moody teenagers), we tend to lash out against the people who love us the most because we know we'll be forgiven. Zuko does truly love and respect his uncle. Probably more so than even he realizes. Going through that amount of trauma though at such a young age... we can't really expect maturity from him. Not until he faces and defeats his demons. Don't worry, I 100% believe that by the end of the show, your opinions on Zuko will likely be VERY different.
General Fong was at this point just really desperate because of the 100 year war. He definatley whent about it the wrong way but unlike Jet who just did it to stupid degrees at least you can se why the guy would be this extreme. Sokka definatley needed to knock him out for everyones sakes. Pakku probably didn't really have much to give Sokka since he is a master water bender and Sokka just isn't a bender. Well now Pakku is going to the southern water tribe to help out there and hopefully get together with Gran gran again. Katara at least seems fine with it even with her and Pakkus rough start. Zuko again shows that even with all the questionable moral choices he can make he still just ultimately wants to go home and belive that his father isn't a complete bastard. Its sad to see Zuko duped because deep down he probably knows that it isn't going to work out but who wouldn't want to belive that their father actually loves them. Iroh again doesent hold things against him because of his guilt in acidentally causing the burning. Azula easily establishes herself as queen pshyco after already having a sick smile on her face after their father burnd Zukos face. Also threathening to kill a guy because he can't controll the tieds is just next level assholery like even someone as shitty as Zhao probably would not go that far because whats the guy going to do its not incompetence thats stopping the ship its the tieds the man isn't a water bender. He probably just subconsiously slipped upp calling Zuko and Iroh prisoners because Azula is that bad to be working under. We also see that Azula is a threath beyond anything we have seen so far as Zuko said last episode that she is basically a prodgidy who got everything he wanted without even trying and has never had to truly struggel in life. Definatley Ozais daughter right here.
Yeah.. put more pressure on him.. It's War and the people are in despair. I understand the General in this, but Sokka did the right thing. Maybe there is a different way, then just fighting..But they are still kids.. also Azula.. she is 14.. just saying. But i really like the plot in this episode were everyone is struggling with their inner fears.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Indeed. And don't forget, this is not earth, But in a time period that roughly corresponds to the Asian and Central European culture of 3000-4000 years ago. That means at that age she is already considered to be an adult and apart from that, she is not only an excellent fighter... Azula is intelligent.. fiercely intelligent.
Hair is a big deal to Fire Nation royalty. People are supposed to shave their heads when they lose an agni kai, to show dishonor. NOte: That's why Zuko has kept his own hair shaved all this time. Also worthy noting that a certain admiral didn't... To cut that ponitail means indeed abandoning Fire Nation nobility. Azula still uses the same thing on her hair. Also, it makes easier to disguise in Earth Kingdom.
They cut their hair for 2 reasons: 1: its clear indication of fire nation, cutting it allows them to blend in. 2: cutting the hair is a sign of dishonor in the fire nation. So choosing to do it is a last resort.

12:57 Its a bit open to interpretation, but I think most of the fandom agrees that Zuko and Iroh cutting their hair was meant to symbolize they departed as members of the Fire Nation and the royal family. Iroh and Zuko did not know that Fire Lord Ozai labelled them both traitors after what happened at the North Pole.
Everytime I see this Zuko vs Azula fight, I get second hand embarrassment because imagine you being 16, and you lose to your 14 year old little sister, and she barely used bending 😭
btw azula has not normal fire soldiers with her but elite royal gaurds and iroh beats them like there nothing and what irih did to azula he did once before during the sotrm where he did it with natural lightning and cuttin there hair in the last is a sign they indeed left the fire nation its like the sym,bol of traitors and deserters and rly disrecpectfull towards the fire nation where everybody weart her hair in a bun if they can or a pony tail
I don’t think iroh and zuko even lost that fight, seems like they pretty much won and then left.. if they had truly lost I’m sure they would have been taken prisoner as azula and her followers wanted to do
Stop saying to your audience (who are probably kids or teens too) that Zuko who is a teenager doesn’t deserve his own uncle’s support. He’s a teen not an adult
I believe cutting off the top knots was to symbolize that they were no longer members of the Fire Nation and an act of humility. Basically acknowledging that they are now fugitives on the run.

Ah, nice. Completely forgot about that and yeah the way they played it was perfect because it being comedic doesn't make it seem as badass like here 😅
I've always wondered if that was the first time Iroh tried it
Azula's blue fire is a nice touch, since not only does it burn hotter, it also means its a cleaner burn -- a solid reflection of her perfectionism.

I doubt he's angry towards his father. Considering he wants to see him so badly.
@@SalikCollinsthat's how it can be for a victim of abuse; wanting to see someone you're still angry at, someone who is not good for you.
Very true and well said. And something we all should keep in mind in real life when someone is acting like a dick. 9/10 there is an underlying reason, unfortunately in real life we don't get people's backstories like we do with Zuko 🤗
@cm4n63 I understand that, but he never showed he was angry at him.
😎🤟🙂
In Fire Nation culture, your hair is considered a manifestation of your honor. You only cut your hair if you have committed acts which are dishonorable and you in essence lose your social status in the fire nation. This scene was Iroh and Zuko essentially giving up their social status as members of the royal family.
Fire Nation is based on Imperilaist Japan
Earth Kingdom is based on the Chinese Kingdoms
Air Nomads were based on Nepalese/Tibetan Monks
Water Tribes are based on Iniut people
There are also sub-cultures in Fire, Earth and Water society that are based on smaller cultures as they do break away from the group but we haven't seen them yet
AZULAAAAAA I know she’s a villain but she’s the goat she’s so good
According to the Kyoshi novels Fire Nationals associate their top knots with their honor, something they take very seriously, Zuko and Iroh cutting them off is a ceremonial way of renouncing their heritage and position in the royal family.
FINALLY, ENTER AZULA.
On of the craziest, most manipulative and cunning, not to mention SKILLED villains of ALL TIME.
You actually did see her use flames in this episode. The first couple attacks she threw at Zuko were blue (super heated) fire.
Ah, just mixed them up with lightning due to the color 🤗
I use that and the line Gary Oldman's character in The Fifth Element says "I am very disappointed!" whenever I am annoyed at something or someone isn't reacting how I expected.
just here to remind everyone that azula is like, 13 here. she's very powerful for her age
😈😁
I think you might mean eastern culture!
Fire nation is Imperial Japan. Earth nation is China
@@harenava1451
Corrected! Thank you kindly.
@@DLites151
I can see connections with both considering imperialism isn’t a Japanese exclusive concept.
Can't wait for you guys to see more of Azula. She's bat shit crazy and can be very evil, but it's due to wanting her dad's acceptance and love.
Azula has arguably one of the best introductions a villain can have. Like, just in general. The line about the tides and all is chilling.😂
Not sure if you already know this or not. The voice actor playing Zuko is Rufio from “Hook” with Robin Williams
Dante Basco
Someone did mention that. Love that. Ru-Fee-ohhhhhhhhhh!!!
Also Daniel Dae Kim as general Fong, an actor that is heard/seen again in this franchise.
Love to see the props for Sokka
The other lowkey thing about Sokka this episode is when Aang wanted to give the whole thing a try? Sokka was on board with giving it a shot.
Aang wakes up in the middle of the night, and says he thinks its a bad idea now? Sokka says Okay, you know best.
Gotta back your friends move. Just shows how much respect he has for Aang even though Aang is younger than Sokka...in terms of life experience at least 🤗
Azula is truly to be feared
1:50 Grey Deslisle is super iconic and legendary as Azula.
These guys are in for the best zuko arc ever
What a start to the next season. Enter one of the best villains in fiction. AND learn the double edged nature of the powerful Avatar state.
The hair knot in Asian culture is used a lot back in the day and specifically for japanese culture, the samurai would only cut their knots when they retire or losing their high status. In this case, it's the loss of their status as royals and citizens of the Fire Nation, knowing full well they are now fugitives.
General Loincloth went like: It's just a prank, bro!
(Former delivery driver.)
I can definitely confirm that it was a hilarious and terrible idea at the time.
Whatever they gave Aang had caffeine in it for sure because that scene always makes me laugh when he gets the zoomies.
love that you called it the zoomies 😀🙂😁
great reaction! eager to see you through season 2 and 3. zuko is my favorite character is almost all of fiction, i hope you enjoy his story.
Zuko and Iroh cutting off their hair at the end:
What they cut off is called a top knot.
Azula's bending:
It is a little visually confusing since her blue fire looks a lot like her lightning. An easy way to tell them apart is to listen to the sound effects. The lightning and fire have two different sound designs.
Thanks for these explanations 🙂
Azula does wield flames, her flames are just blue, which burn a lot hotter than red flames ^^
It can be a bit hard to catch on a first watch, cause they look a bit similar, but for the reference, whenever Azula used lightning here, she took some time to charge it.
Zuko's outburst towards Iroh was harsh, but he *is* still a kid, too. Emotionally, it was easier for him to pretend Iroh was being petty, cause the alternative was considering his father truly doesnt care.
And the way he immediately lights up when Iroh decides to come along shows that Iroh does in fact mean so much to him, he just can't express it well due to his emotional instability and all
Yeah Zuko is dealing with a lot of baggage 😢 we are just very protective of Iroh 🤗
Let's go! We've made it to Book 2! It's going to be a fun ride
The sister - Azula, can bend fire as well as lightning.
Can't wait, can't wait for Korra!
"I think she needs therapy"
YOU HAVE NO FREAKING IDEA
Dont forget those tissues for the Tales!
As you've already started to see, season 2 ups the level of the bending and fight choreography from great to amazing.
As you have probably already summized, Azula is one of the best villains in the Avatar series, some even consider her better then Ozai himself.
Azula reminds me of Adam from RWBY
She's more like Cinder
She is so much cooler than Adam though. Adam was a whiny stalker 😂 can you tell we didn’t like him 😜🤗
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 I genuinely think the way Adam was written made Blake's part of the story way worse.
I'm pretty sure the top-knot cutting is a reference to Ashitaka doing the same in Princess Mononoke as a result of his forced exile from the Emishi people. Bryan and Mike loved that movie and Miyazaki generally.
You have seen Azula wield flames, it's just that hers burn hotter and look blue, rather than yellow.
This episode conveniently forgot Aang also had the help of the moon spirit to fight the fleet. The avatar state is powerful, but it wouldn't be safe to try to rush the fire nation by yourself with it.
I think you mean the ocean spirit. The moon spirit was dead while Aang was wrecking the fire fleet.
I don't think it forgot, I think they(the characters) don't really know anything about the avatar state and its limits.
Lightning is a sub art of firebending, other bending disciplines have their own, they are shown further in the show
4:05 If you only knew 👀
Hands down :P
It says.
@@kenshanparchman6838 Good point. But in my eyes fire bending is way to powerful in this show, even without lightning bending.
4:04 You have No Idea.😬
Also, man how humbling and confusing it must be to be afraid of your own power.
Azula is only 14?! 🤯
4:04 and that is just being nice
13:00 that means they are no longer part of the royal family and no longer part of the Fire Nation
They cut their hair for 2 reasons:
1: its clear indication of fire nation, cutting it allows them to blend in.
2: cutting the hair is a sign of dishonor in the fire nation. So choosing to do it is a last resort.

Welcome to book two where things are gunna get a lot darker 🤫
I don’t think iroh and zuko even lost that fight, seems like they pretty much won and then left.. if they had truly lost I’m sure they would have been taken prisoner as azula and her followers wanted to do
She need therapy:
YOU HAVE NO IDEA!
