    Thank you. I am completely new to off camera flash (Well using flash in general), and while hooking up my system, it worked easily enough but i couldn't work out why I sometimes had black sections through my pictures. When you talked about shooting only in manual and syncing with the flash, using less than 200 shutter speed, I started to understand a little what was going on. Really appreciated being able to solve my problem and am looking forward to your other informative videos. :)

    Hi! I absolutely love watching your videos and learning from all of the amazing tips you offer! I shoot in my small in home studio and currently have only one off camera flash. I wanted to know if it's okay to work with just one in my situation (only shoot during the day) or if I really need to get another one. I own a canon rebel t6i and my flash is a canon speed light 430ex II. Also I have dial functions on the flash but I find it hard to press the buttons down to adjust settings. I noticed you had a turn dial that looks like it would be much easier to use. Is that something I can purchase or are all flashes just different and mine just so happens to not have that turn dial and instead has buttons to press. My studio space is south facing so typically there is tons of light, sometimes too much but on those off gloomy days I need something to bring in more light. Also should I be using a diffuser on the flash and have it always face the celing? Thanks for your help and input!

    This video answered a bunch of my questions. I have been researching what systems will work with my Nikon D3400. I currently have one Voking VK750III Remote TTL Camera Flash Speedlite which I've been using on-camera but want to start working with off-camera flash. One thing that is important is for the flashes to be able to communicate with each other when they do not have direct line of sight (I will need one flash to occasionally be behind a subject). I've looked at different triggers, etc and can't find anything compatible with the D3400. Are the receivers/transmitters you used compatible?

I saw some people put one trigger on camera and another one on the flash and some people use only one trigger. Why they do that ? Later I'm going to buy my own flash. Probably 470ex ai. Do I need to buy two trigger or not ? Thank you for responding to me.

    Is the Nikon SB 900 internal transmission system just not reliable. Mine has never failed me. I just think it would be a great way to save some money ie. using the built in transmitter/receiver system. I would think that the extra trigger and receiver would be in the way. Or, are you using them to get the flash up higher?

    • @Joymichelle
      @Joymichelle  3 года назад

      I like this system because I can customize everything from my camera and they work without fail even at great distances. My second shooters often have the same system and this helps me keep channels separate too. I’m sure you can use the internal system but I found it to be less reliable

    Just found your video. FYI Nikon has the Creative Lighting System (CLS) that enables you to adjust settings on two separate groups of flashes. Although the radio trigger you use is more effective with obstacles within the area of flashes you use, you can also just use the light signal from the built-in flash (or an attached flash) to trigger your other flashes. Line of sight is necessary for effectiveness though. I've used multiple flashes at shoots where I just used my built-in flash to trigger them. Also, you don't use High Speed Sync, to be able to use faster shutter speeds? thx for the video.

    Im just learning about flash and I get confuse a lot when photographers start talking about lightning aspect ratios and the inverse square law when using flash...do you think about that when you use off and on camera flash at weddings?

    • @Joymichelle
      @Joymichelle  7 лет назад

      Oh boy. This could be it's own video. lol But yes - I do think about this for lighting receptions. The inverse square law can be confusing, but the more you actually shoot the more this will make sense intuitively. It's a lot like the triangle of exposure. I can explain it but until you put it into practice it can be a little hard to wrap your mind around it.

    Does your camera popup flash not have a commander mode? Hence you are adding a flash to the your camera to perform this role.

      +Alex Sarna oh interesting! I'm going to play around with the internal system of the flashes and see if they have the same capabilities. I've just heard using triggers is a lot more reliable. :)

    Hi Michelle,
    What is the best way of shooting a group picture (between 8 -15 subjects) so as to get it very clear
    Charles T?

    • @Joymichelle
      @Joymichelle  6 лет назад

      In general as a rule you want to use an f-stop equal to the number of people within the photograph if you want to be sure that they will all be in focus. So for example you would use F8 for a group with eight people!

    • @cktufuor
      @cktufuor 6 лет назад +1

      Great tip. Thanks so much. Is it better to use a wide angle lens or it does not matter. When I shoot group photos, sometimes, I get some of the peoples' head to appear oblong. How is that?

    • @Joymichelle
      @Joymichelle  6 лет назад

      Wide angle lenses do tent to have more distortion especially people standing on the edges so I find that I don’t wan to use anything wider than 24mm and keep people from being at the very outside of my frame. Does that make sense?

    • @cktufuor
      @cktufuor 6 лет назад

      Yes, it does make sense. I normally use a 12-24mm lens or a 24-70mm lens

    • @Joymichelle
      @Joymichelle  6 лет назад

      I would stick with the 24-70 if possible

    Your list of "Flash Gear" (above) includes a link to the Pocket Wizard Trigger. While reading the information about the Pocket Wizard Trigger on that link, I see this: Flash units must be mounted on a FlexTT5 transceiver (ordered sepretaly) for TTL operation or any PocketWizard unit for manual operation. So, do I need to also purchase a Flex TT5 transceiver?

    • @Joymichelle
      @Joymichelle  6 лет назад

      +Lisa Pallardy you will need one on your camera and one on the OCF for it to trigger

    Joy, help! I have the PW III, but apparently I don't have a way to put the flash on my camera WITH the PW III? I watched your video again and I don't see any way that my PW will work with my flash on my camera...what did I do wrong getting two PW if I can only use one PW OFC, and one on camera and not have my flash on my camera? I have not been able to find an answer on this. Thanks!

      I think for continuous lighting your best bet would be a video light. This is a good starter one amzn.to/2LIRjMm
