  • In this video, I demonstrate how to be "calm and assertive" (Cesar's Way) while working on the drying, combing out, and clipping process of the groom. There are a couple of hard moments to watch so sensitive viewers please be advised. Thank you, everyone, for watching and for all of your valuable feedback. I didn't charge for this groom. The reward of accomplishing the groom and helping the owner was more than enough compensation for me.

I'm a dog groomer at a vet office and I get all kinds of dogs, matted, mean, will bite, scream, scratch, alligator role on the table....you did a wonderful job. Don't let anyone tell you different. Until you have experienced the grooming world people have NO ideal what we go through to groom some dogs.

I feel you! I worked at a vet clinic as before. It was in a small room in the basement - my instructor and I called it the dungeon :-) LOL! She actually told me that there was a ghost that walked around down there, and I believe her! It was incredible experience though, and I loved every minute of it. I also drove to a rescue shelter and groomed their dogs for free - as many as I could - in order to get as much experience as possible. I love grooming dogs!! I really can't believe that I get paid to do this for a living :-) Especially these days. I feel like I'm living in a dream and I never want to wake up! Thank you so much for your comment Krystal Chester! I really appreciate it, and I'm so happy to meet another groomer. Namaste, I honor the light in you that is also in me.

I can't believe anyone would say one negative thing about you, considering most groomers I know wouldn't even attempt to groom Sunshine! They would say "he bites! Take him elsewhere!" You did an amazing job at calming him and putting up with his grumpy antics lol This is a wonderful video for those people who can't handle an older little dog with an attitude! Kudos to you Sir!!!! Sunshine looks great ;)

@@marlove8451 How do you expect to shave him off without him holding him down and having to man handle him a little. This is the grooming world. If you don't like it, groom your dog at home or TRAIN your dog to behave at the groomers. Groomers are not going to train your dog for you, so if a dog is giving a very hard time you have to do what you have to do. Sometimes a dog may get a knick or two or for example this dog kept biting down on everything near his face, he made himself bleed that way. That is not Juns fault. This is a rough groom, but this is what groomers have to do for the animal. In the long run, a minor injury is worth it if the dog comes out fully groomed/matte free. In the long run it is better for the dog.

+joanekins123 Thank you for watching! I understand your frustration. It is upsetting to see a dog in this condition and to see it go through an uncomfortable experience. However, I believe that we should try to be more understanding and accepting of others. We never know the struggles someone else is going through, and sometimes they just need someone to understand rather than criticize. "It is always better to be kind than to be right." Wayne Dyer. Hi Jun. Watching this I could see that no matter how gentle you were with this poor dog, it did not matter. It might would help if the owner talked to her Vet about getting an anxiety medication (maybe something mild) on the days that she needs to bring him in to you, so that about 15 mins before she comes it will start to work hopefully. I say this because you can tell that he is suffering from anxiety, so, yeah might be a good thing to bring up to the dogs owner. Wouldn't hurt to talk to the Vet about.

Being a groomer for 35 years and a trainer I can appreciate the amount of time and effort it takes to work on a dog like this. I see it all the time with much younger dogs who are just not used to being handled for grooming at all. Biting, flailing, pooping, peeing disasters. However if a seasoned groomer is not willing to help these dogs, where do they go? Yes you have to use some restraint. Looks worst than it is, but the dog cannot win. You need to be calm and persistent/assertive. The reason this dog is like this is because other groomers gave up. They fight it we stop what we are doing. Dog wins every time with the owner like that. Sedating a dog for a groom is much more inhumane and taxing on their body. So, kudos to you doggroomer2012! Cathi U-dirtydog.com

Nonsense....putting an elderly , fear aggressive dog through an ordeal like this Fir the sake of Overpowering the animal and winning the battle is Inhumane and quite frankly a cardiac waiting to happen!! In fact, I’m more surprised the dog didn’t drop dead considering there are three parts to this debacle. At one point I believe he almost garrotted himself and almost fell off the table, not to mention the humiliation of crapping and peeing himself. There uncomfortable and there’s just plain abuse and I’m sorry to say that Jun, you got it wrong in this occasion,
, I’m a big fan of yours , love your kind heart and gentle manner, but this dog was too old, too damaged and too scared for all of that .

Hello Mr. & Mrs. Jun. I am still new to the iPhone WiFi stuff and just found your grooming videos while looking for Yorkie, Schnauzer face cuts as several of my 16 rescue dogs are these/mixes of these. I have always cut bodies & nails, my mother (85, recently passed away) was great on the faces; even investing in our Vet's recommended professional clippers. Reading many of the reviews given you, it is obvious that many speak without actual, hands on experience and without real honest love, care, compassion, or understanding of animals-dogs. Most of the MANY dogs I've taken in have matting so extreme that the skin has literally become part of the matting causing raw open sores and wounds that became infected and a convenient place for disease & death causing parasites to thrive. Matting is painful not only from the pulling of hair & skin & the wounds mats cause, but also from creating a home in which fleas nest, lay their eggs & feed, provides a hideaway for ticks feed & multiple undisturbed, invites lice, mites and flys. I have removed mats to find fat heathy maggots living under the mat in sores eating their way into the dog. Neglect IS Abuse and Animal Cruelty. Had Sunshine passed away during grooming, it would not have been the result of the grooming experience rather the result of the preceding years of neglect & probable physical abuse. The grooming was a necessity for Sunshine's health and welfare. Not only did he feel better afterwards, he learned a positive lesson from the experience in a way that muzzling, restraining, sedating or giving up on him would not have provided. You maintained a firm, calm, patient, in control caring hand and demeanor while he, not knowing what to expect, expressed his fear, anxiety & pain from his condition. As traumatic as it probably seemed to Sunshine, he is now aware & knows he was not harmed or hurt by you or the grooming, (creating a trust that under sedation he would not have realize); that he feels good being freed from the pain & afflictions caused from long nails & mats; his skin can breath & coat & skin can gain their health. Because he feels better physically, he will feel better emotionally/mentally. In Sunshine's situation, restrains would have served only to increase fear, anxiety & a feeling of helplessness.
I have rescued & take in animals for most of my near 65 yrs. Dogs, cats, horses, goats, 2 injured geese & chicken, guineas, ducks, & 1 turkey all being chicks injured in transport to a retailer. I have been bitten, scratched, scrapped, pecked & kicked while tending to these animals. Not once have I ever used sedation or restrains on any of them other than a leash, harness, my hand and body. I don't even use collars. It may take an entire day to give an animal the attention & care it requires. I use a firm caring touch, remain calm & steadfast, show kindness & respect to each animal and at the end of the day, after all is said and done, I've earned that animal's show of respect and thanks.
So Mr. Jun, I applaud what you and your wife do. For many of the dogs you groom you may be the only kindness, the only good person experience they have known or will ever know. As for the clueless, possibly inhumane, critics...Ignore them and pray that no animal has to suffer their hand, attitude and/or opinion. Keep doing your good work and playing the calming music. CJ.D.

I think Jun is very very patient co soldering the aggression and condition of the dogs coat. It is not easy being a dog groomer under a crucially judging eye. I partially blame the owners for letting their furbabies coat get so out of control. Owners you must brush your babies daily between grooms. And please have your furbabies vaccinated with most importantly their rabies shots.

Poor baby. Probably better to anesthetize and groom him while under. Certainly a lot less stressful. Although, anesthesia for a dog that age could be very dangerous. This is what happens people when you don't start grooming your dog as puppies, so they can get used to being handled. This poor dog has been neglected for years. Very sad.

Poor "Sunshine" this crap wouldn't have to happen if the ignorant owner started brushing the new puppy regularly. Learning with least to clip the down the coat at home in a relaxed environment. Then take it regularly for pretty clips. But, what do stupid owners do? They don't touch the puppys coat for 3-6 months until they're matted and a disaster. They take them to cheap groomers, never ask for experienced or customer satisfaction and then the pup is abused, slapped, hung, tortured. Now the puppy learns the groomer is the enemy. I've had dogs that I've groomed falling asleep on my table because their owners have bathed, clipped, handled and have them proper maintaining. These toy poodles are a blessing to groom. But, if you never bother to maintain your toy breeds this is the hell they go through because they are scared for their lives! People get off your lazy back sides and take care of your dogs properly!

FriendlyPitbull1 I completely understand your frustration, and I used to feel just as upset as well. It really is a lack of the right information rather than a lack of love. I'm sure these owners love their dogs to death, but if they only have love and not the correct information they may very well love their dogs "to death." I believe we must educate the general public about the importance of proper grooming and the regular maintenance of the skin and coat. It is so so so so so important, but most people don't give it another thought. It's up to us, people like you and I, to spread information and create awareness on the topic. It is a very big issue, and we must bring it to the attention of dog owners. Thank you so much for your passion - I felt your passion just by reading your comment! And yes, I would let THIS GROOMER let MY dog bite the equipment. You want to bite ten bite away.
Someone gave a heinz 57 cat and it bit and scratched the heck out of him as he carried it a few blocks from the pet store to my house. Within 3 weeks my friend came back and THAT SAME CAT NEVER BIT ANYONE EVER AGAIN. He'd try to bite me, I'd stick my finger that he'd try to bite down his throat, every time. He hated the gaging feeling and he stopped all together. The same I would apply to this case. And yes if my pet was bleeding slightly after the groom, then I'd congratulate the groomer, and say " oh I see that he was being bad, so be it, live with the consequences too".

I am really pissed that his mommy of ten years let him get in this shape. You say she's really sweet. Why doesn't she take care of him? I saw him in part 1. I thought he had just then been pulled out of the shelter and adopted. You should talk to her about having him groomed more often. I don't care how "sweet" she is. That is neglect. I do commend her for adopting him. That was a great thing. If she has had him for the last ten of his fourteen years he should be a lot calmer now. Just because someone adopts doesn't mean they are always great parents. I have only had my Maltese nine months now. After about 4 months he became like a new dog. He is happy now. He is playful. He is about ten years old. He had a very bad life. This makes me really wonder about this lady. Things should have turned around for Sunshine by now.

Each critter is as individual as humans, please know more about the details b4 simply "really pissed". Love compassion, and yes someone will need to be a kind "alpha" to express needs of human/dog needs. THe dog may not naturally believe he requires hair cuts and grooming-we know for health and sanitation, we humans impose these needs. Lets groom a grizzly bear in a 10 pound body? Good job Jun.

I can for my life not understand why you keep going and let that dog get tangled up in the leash. Are you aware that the dog's thyroid gland is located in their throat, just like ours and you are not only risking serious injuries on it's treachea but on the gland as well? I understand that you want to help the dog, but for severe cases like this one, please consider a harness so that the dog won't injure itself. Also, be careful with sedation as their hearts might not always handle it.

And as a groomer myself I would have had to stop, and ask that Sunshine be taken to his Vet for some type of sedation as you did in the first video. Not for the groomers safety as the lay person would think but because, doing this is safer and more humane for Sunshine. I was worried he would have a heart attack at his age.

It IS possible to rehabilitate dogs in this way I know from experience and have groomed many equally aversive dogs, one that even had an eye poked out with scissors by a previous groomer, talk about trust issues! it's not a fast process but generally owners are very understanding when you explain why it has to be done this way, the only exceptions would be if the state of a dog was so bad it was immediately severely affecting the dogs health in which case sedation is the kindest option.

  • @nikkiclark5519
    @nikkiclark5519 11 лет назад

Also did you have to try and achieve all of this in one session? If he was so nervous of you to begin with I would have suggested a series of short, positive rehabilitation sessions to get the dog used to you and the new environment, sounds and sensations. maybe not even groomed for the first but get him up on the table and used to being touched with plenty of praise. Then let him go ending on a positive experience each time to build his trust.

Please please check out Turid Rugaas and learn about calming signals and how to use them with dogs. Whilst as a professional groomer I understand how difficult some difficult dogs can be but there are several techniques you used here including 'showing the dog I'm quicker than him' that were just winding him up further as he was trying to submit to you - (watch for his licking) and the body front on heavy eye contact is very threatening to a dog try no direct eye contact and turn to the side.

With permission, I just took a friends dog (Maltese) to my vet to get shaved and de-fleed. My friend has a lot on "her plate" and hasn't been able to keep up on his grooming needs. I am glad I took him. They were able to sedate him so the grooming wouldn't be so traumatic for him. As wonderfully calm and patient as this groomer is, sometimes it's just better for the dog to be sedated to be groomed...it's better than not going at all, and letting the dog get in such a bad condition.

I think you should have muzzled the dog. You have to take away the temptation to bite so it can relax. Then a bath and heavy blanket for warmth. 2 people, 1 to hold , 1 to groom. The reason it looks so dirty is that everyone is afraid of it. So it probably won't even let the owners near it without permission. Sad

I've been a groomer for a long time and have handled dogs like this, don't be mislead, this dog is not scared he's just mad that someone is doing something he doesn't want done. This is the result of no discipline as a puppy and not teaching what is acceptable behavior. The person who had him as a puppy was probably the type that says, "oh isn't he cute" when he was ten weeks old and did something aggressive , not so cute when they are an adult and is seriously trying to hurt you. He's a beautiful dog with a really bad attitude and babying him has made him the way he is now. You don't have to hurt a dog to teach it how to behave, but when I see this I think of all the really sweet dogs being put to sleep in shelters every day and people keeping nasty dogs like this instead. This groomer had the patience of a saint and I commend him for it, it's not easy to work with a dog like this, and it takes longer to groom them since you must go slower, some may disagree but the first thing I would have done was put a humane muzzle on him, dogs like this settle faster when they know they can't bite you and working with those gloves was awful and he still was bitten on the wrist. Poodles are cute and many can be sweet but boy when you get a nasty one you're in for trouble.

All of these dogs which were difficult to groom were unneutered males. This was probably responsible for some of the temperament issues. Were these dogs used for breeding? Why else would owners be so irresponsible and not neuter these male dogs?

7.08. Speechless. So sad that you are responsible for this...and very disappointed in you . You know better than this. I’ve been a veterinary surgeon fir twenty five years and this has actually upset me. The fact that it took three long sessions to get Finished groom is reason enough not to repeat the ordeal again. The stress alone could have caused a cardiac. One saving grace is that the groomer was you jun.....a kind and gentle man mostly. Other groomers are not blessed with your disposition and I’m pretty sure that dog would have been body slammed of camera. Owner should be prosecuted for neglect. Dogs aren’t born fearful...owners laziness and stupidity are responsible for 99% of all dog behaviour problems...by the way...anyone remember when Cesar got bit for pushing a food aggressive dog too far? We shouldn’t always seek to fix every canine behaviour problem, when humans are the biggest cause of them. Some dogs simply won’t be humanised enough for what we expect them to cope with in our world. It was a sad day when man domesticated animals for his own need to have a companion or worker or accessory or service provider.

I don't mind people screaming dissatisfaction, or even being rude and mean. All feedback is welcome, and I benefit from all of it. My concern is for the angry person that leaves the angry comment. I do not wish to cause anyone to feel angry or upset because these emotions have such detrimental effects on our health and wellbeing. There are times when I think, "Are my videos too much? Maybe I should re-evaluate the material." But then I have to remind myself that "people who are looking for occasion to be offended will never be disappointed" Wayne Dyer. For some people, that's the only way they know how to communicate and I must be understanding and accepting of it - especially when it is my mother! LOL! I'm kidding!... or am I?

um... how is ANY of this "calm" or "assertive"??? this is not "Cesar's Way" - there is nothing calm or assertive about wearing big ol' work gloves and trying to handle a flailing animal. the dog should have been properly restrained, to begin with; that in itself could have helped calm him. i wouldn't bring my most calm and easy-going dog to this groomer, because he just isn't good with handling a dog or grooming tools.

i would have started with an attitude of confidence, because it's the energy the handler projects that the dog picks up on most. besides that, i would have used a loop/noose at the front end, and if needed, a sling at the back end. i "get" the gloves, but i really think if the dog wanted to bite for real, work gloves probably wouldn't be that much protection; i also think just the hands with no gloves would be less frightening to the dog. also, there is a way to hold the dogs face while trimming that area so that it can't bite. i'm not even a groomer, but i've worked and trained with one, and it became my "job" to "talk" to the difficult dogs to calm them down - i used to get teased and called "the dog whisperer", before Cesar. it's all in your energy.

Karhleen Moore Not angry, but scared. I was afraid he might have a seizure or a heart attack! I was also scared that he would spin at the wrong time and I might accidentally stab him. I was trying to control these fears, but if it looked like I was angry I'd like to make it clear that I wasn't. I'm sorry you didn't like the video. I know it's hard to watch. It was very difficult for both of us to go through as well. The owner actually asked me to try again, but I told her that I honestly felt that it would be best if I didn't try again. I said, "I think the best way I can help is to step aside."
You're right, I made a lot of mistakes and I may have done more harm than good in this situation. But my intention was always to help. Thank you for being so passionate about protecting dogs from abuse. Even if it was unintentional. I appreciate your honest feedback.

God bless us groomers that do take these dogs and do the best we can because some owner had either NO CLUE how to be responsible with the breed they chose and because of their neglect(which is abuse)! We do know how to safely control or hold the dog to the best of each situation, and yes accidents can and do happen. We do not cause it. There is NO reason a dog or cat should become matted or behave like that if they are properly cared for, but alas some are and shaving is the only humane way for most to be comfortable. It grows back and most customers understand this. Thank you for being a wonderful groomer!

I groom my Bichons and yes this was hard to watch. The noose twisting was bothering me but only you could see how tight it really was. Heck groomers have nipped dogs tongues that stuck out at the wrong time. Groomers do use holds on dogs that look terrible they do not hurt them. My one bichon gets benedryl before a groom and it does help. I don't know if this older dog can have it but have the owner ask the vet. My vet doesn't like to give strong drugs. Don't take all the bad comments to heart. It would look bad to most people.Maybe a helper in the future or a harness with the big bar instead of the noose. Matting on a dog and fleas could cause sores which could get infected. Poor boy I'm sorry for what ever he went through to be so scared.

Julia - Top to Tail dog grooming Woah, best of luck to you both! Seriously, that's not an easy task and I admire your willingness to take on the challenge. The only advice I can give without actually meeting the dog is to stay calm and assertive like Cesar Millan would say. Breathe deep through your belly rather than your chest and try to imagine her staying still for the face. The more calm you can be the more calm she will be, and it just takes a lot of patience. I hope you're charging more for that groom because it requires so much more time and skill. Be a Jedi groomer and use the Force :-) Let me know how the next groom goes, I'm eager to know!

Do you think that trying to pull out some of the mats on his muzzle and ears was maybe too much since it is so tender there, especially since he is older?
