    Jun, I so enjoy watching your work as groomer, you are so calming and soothing for the animals. I myself have a 9-10 year old Maltese who has become very difficult to groom. My regular groomer has told me she can't do it anymore for fear he'll get hurt. I wish you were here in Massachusetts to help my little guy. Please keep being you and helping our fur babies! 🐩

    He is not brushing out mats, really he is brushing in coat conditioner....He isn't yanking or pulling!! More massaging all over! Mat split combs are a blessing to a dog if you know how to use them properly!! Great Job!!!

      I love it I think! Awesome, you can ALWAYS learn something new everyday..Even 17 years after I begin, I will confess that....I have problem saying I watch other techniques to get ideas and advise. I compare all that is said then try to mix it all together. I like how you work with the pets, I think it is great!! Thanks :)

      Kandi Cox I'm always watching other grooming videos and vet/dog health related videos. There's so much information out there that it is does get tough to sort through. I agree with you - find your own style that uniquely you. We all follow the basic fundamentals, but because we are artists the technique and style will always be a little different. Kind of like choreographed dancers. They're all doing the same moves but all the dancers make the moves uniquely their own. I love to watch the ones who smile the most and really get into it :-) Thank you so much for all the nice comments. Just a reminder, you recognize qualities in others that you possess yourself. Namaste :-)

    Jun, don't listen to all these jerks saying mean and nasty things. You were very kind and patient with Sunshine. His life was probably Hell before his new mommy got him. I adopted a Maltese last December. I groom him myself because he doesn't trust people. It took him a long time to trust me. He still won't let me near his mouth or feet without a fuss, but he never bites. My vet has me give him Benadryl. It helps. Sunshine is so very stressed that he should be sedated because it is just too much for him. I'm sure he has been through enough stress in his life. But you did great with him. I would like to have seen you do the head and seen the end results. Keep up the good work.

      Olivia Hardin Wow! Thank you so much for your kind words! Comments like yours help motivate me to keep doing what I love to do most, groom dogs so they can be comfortable in their own skin.
      Is your maltese doing better during his grooming session? We recently came across a tip that may help although we have not personally tried this yet. But we heard giving a fearful/aggressive dog 1 melatonin pill, he should calm down so you are able to groom him. If you try the pill, please share your experience with us! Thank you so much for your support!

    You said he is 14 yrs old - chances are good he's got joint pain adding to his problems. I will say you handle him very gently, good job on that! Poor little guy is so freaked out.
    I wouldn't even try to comb him out for the prep, I'd be using better clippers (Andis are faster and cut better and are also quieter) and go over him with a 7F. He doesn't seem to mind the clippers as much as the pulling on his coat. Also, I agree that using a regular grooming noose would allow you to hold him a little tighter without the concern of him choking.
    In any case thank you for your care for this little dog and, yes, some of them are just like that and some are ruined by even one bad experience.

    I'm a really docile pup and have never been mistreated and have lived with my humans since I was 8 weeks old. And even though I am a gentle guy all other times, I don't like to be groomed either. I do get aggressive when my legs or face are groomed. I made my human watch this video and she learned a lot about how to help me calm down and understand I'm not in danger.

    You are totally torturing this dog! Seriously! Why are you using a de-matting tool when you are taking the fur short anyway?! Duh?! You should have clipped that fur off before the bath! Why are you doing that to the dog? It's clear the dog is not socialized with being brushed(or maybe it's old?). That dog bit through garden gloves?! Biggest load of crap I've heard in a while, seriously but not limited to the dodgy background music throughout this video! Leave the dog alone man seriously.

    Know way is he being cruel in ANYWAY SHAPE OR FORM!!! and anyone that thinks that is totally ouit of order!!!!
    This poor little 14yr dog ,has so obviously been totally abused and negleted and fortunately NOW has a new loving owner,that 100% knows he needs help and has brought him to a Groomer "that can hopefully" cope with the aggression his cruel previous owner have caused ~ SHAME ON YOU ....WHO EVER U R??

    I adopted a Maltese as a baby and though she does not bite, she HATES to be groomed .... she's NEVER been abused ... so hope people realize, some breeds just don't want to do what we want them to sometimes! BTW .... wish you lived in my area, I'd certainly bring her to you .... you are absolutely amazing with him! :)

    • @JunTheGroomer1
      @JunTheGroomer1  10 лет назад

      ***** Thank you so much! You're absolutely right. Not all dogs that behave badly have been abused. We forget that they have their own thoughts and feelings, and we don't always know what's going on inside their furry little heads ;-) Some dogs just don't like being messed with, just like some people don't like to be touched. Then there are other dogs that won't stop hugging and kissing on you while you groom them.

    I love how you handle Sunshine. As a retired groomer I can say I've been there! I agree 100% u made the right decision as far as continuing to work with him. It's obvious he is very stressed to the point of it being dangerous to his health. As much as tranqing him is dangerous as well at his age I believe it's his only option. Poor little guy. • @JunTheGroomer1
      @JunTheGroomer1  9 лет назад +3

      Alice Connell I think they did their best. Some dogs, especially purebred dogs like Poodles are just born like that. It's like a birth defect from too much inbreeding or unethical breeding practices. I'm not saying that you're incorrect, just that there are other factors to consider as well. His mother said that nobody has ever hurt him as far as they know, and they think he was born like this. That's why finally at 4 he was turned over to the shelter, and the shelter deemed him too dangerous to adopt. He was on death-row, but the day he was scheduled to die the lady who owns him now saw him and just couldn't let him die. He actually attacked everyone but her, and he bonded with her immediately. I wouldn't feel too bad for this lucky guy. He actually has a great life at home - spoiled actually :-) LOL! I do understand your feelings too, and I'm so happy that someone with such a kind heart like you supports my channel. Thank you so much for watching!

    I have a toy poodle that is 12 now, I've had him since he was 2-3 months old. He behaves just like this while being groomed. He is not abused and never has been. He is the little love of my life. I don't know why he behaves like that though. He hates loud noises so maybe it's the clippers? He barks at my alarm clock and timer on the stove. I just groom him in stages so he isn't stressed out for a long time.

He flipped out and went #1 and #2 all over my table while doing crocodile spins! It was crazy and we had it up on this channel for about a year before we had to take it down because it was causing too much of a negative reaction. So long story short, we decided not to use the muzzle on him anymore. LOL!!! Thank you so much for watching!

    I hate the thought of a little dog being restrained by a collar round its neck. If it fell off the table its wind pipe would surely be damaged. It would be much better to have someone else to help with the grooming and forget the collar...soooooo dangerous for the dog.

    It is so sad to me to see a dog that seems to feel so afraid of a grooming. What had to have happened to this poor dog in it's life to make it that afraid and aggressive towards someone trying to help him? It breaks my heart to know that there are people out there who would hurt and animals and have no regrets or feelings at all about what they have done.

    ok, i have not read through all previous comments.. so apologies in advance!!!
    I am sorry.
    I am a mobile pet groomer just a tad over 1yr old newbie in the business. I love all animals (spiders are not considered an animal in my world) I enjoyed that with poor Sunshine, that is basically a typical 1st time client of mine in the mobile world, constantly. I am one to try things and slowly introduce grooming to the sweet animals who have been forsed with that life to them . I have introduced atleast 5 new puppies to a grooming regeme and they are tolerant 1yr on and cank now enjoy it, They are affectionate and looking forward to galloping and coming to me ( WHICH I AM PLEASED ABOUT) :-) I have only turned away ONE client so far and reason being that i felt it TOO DANGEROUS that the dog would lunge toward my hand constantly whether clippers or impale on scirrors.. (done it with scissors, i will offered to wash and trim or clip all over this poor girl but with exception of the head as was too ddangerous for me) I have alot of patents and willing to spend the far long extra time on a pet for no extra charge just to TRY and help through their pet through the next cycle of its life and try and NOT introduce bad habits... Please PPL SEND ME YOUR VIDEOS OF THINGS GONE WRONG AND HOW TO HANDLE THE ANIMALS YOU NEEDS TO RESTRAIN TIO GROOM!!! Always eyes and heart open!!! XX

    I adopted my toy poodle when she was 12 years old. She came with tons of medical and behaviorial issues. She hated being groomed, she was a terrorist. 4 1/2 years later, she's 16 now and healthy. She loves being groomed and stands perfectly still. You're doing great and it's not easy. People want to judge but you don't really know until you've done it. Stay calm and keep the bandaids close by. :) I love being a toy poodle Mom so much I just adopted an old 18 year old filled with cancer. She's now cancer free and healthy. you know something with all the abuse that happens to animals on a daily basis around the globe . such horrific things that people do to animals that to see such a gentle compassionate man like yourself handling this little dog who obviously had some traumatic experience but to see the way that you work with them ,the patience that you have and the solutions that you employey and the advice that you take from other people and just your overall demeanor is fantastic . it's beautiful and the world needs more people like you .I applaud you for your your gift and I think the world is blessed to have you in it. animals are very lucky to have you in it as well keep up the good job and you know some people are mean well with advice sometimes they just perhaps come across rather well not as nice as could be but I think they mean well .you're very very good person with great character and you take advice and criticism very well .kudos to you. much success to you .never change.

    I've been grooming for 20+ years and learned the only gloves a dog or cat can't bite thru are welding gloves. You can feel pressure tho. Akso I don't let the dog bite on my gloves, cause older dogs can very easily break a tooth or have one fall out. I always use a muzzel; but only if i have to. Dogs need to learn at there first grooming you are the boss and they are not to bite. But I also totally understand that a dog has feelings and he might not feel like being groomed that day, or just grumpy, so I talk to all of them as if they were my child and at the end of the day, I never forget to tell them how good they were and how pretty they are.

    • @JunTheGroomer1
      @JunTheGroomer1  9 лет назад

      Lexy Merrick I really like that! I completely agree that dogs have their own individual personalities and moods. I've heard that even show dogs are sometimes pulled out of competition simply because they are having a bad day. I also agree about the muzzle, and I was concerned about him hurting his teeth. But we tried a muzzle on his first visit and that did not go well at all. Unfortunately, this was the safest way that I could think of other than sedation. I did recommend that he does get sedated for his future grooms though because it took over a week for him to physically recover from the experience. I could imagine him feeling like an 80 year old man would after wrestling with a young man for a couple of hours. He was beat! LOL! I love your approach, and thank you so much for the feedback.

      Hong anh Nguyen You don't always have to correct a dog that is panic biting as sometimes they are in such a state that they don't hear the corrections or they can make it worse. If I were in this situation, I'd keep my hand in the position, put the dog in a submissive and relaxing posture, correct once or twice, and wait until the dog calms down to move my hand. I also wouldn't let the dog tense up again. One if the things I do to release tension in my dog before I trim her nails, is give her a thorough massage. It works wonders.

      Hi. I'm also a groomer, and I work on shelter pets a lot. The BEST video I have ever seen for safely handling a dog that needs help like this is called 'Agressive nail trimming' by Christina Doughtery. I may need to check the spelling.... She shows and explains a LOT about techniques that help a dog acclimate to being groomed. Speciffically nail trimming, but she uses the exact same techniques I use as a groomer to acclimate any high stress or traumatized animal.

    Woah, relax there jules - LOL! It's ok that people get upset with these videos. They are concerned about the dogs and their well being - there's nothing wrong with that. Plus they don't know my intentions so they may just be looking at my actions without considering my intent. But I always say, Intent vs. Impact - even if I had good intentions if the impact is negative than I should reconsider what I'm doing. Thank you so much for understanding me!

    I have a Pomeranian whos behaves like that. I hand reared him from 12 hrs old.He has never been harmed or injured he is 4 years old. If I try to brush him not only does he freak out he actually comes at me and attacks me even when I am not touching him. He was groomed 3 times a week as a puppy.This behaviour started at about 10 months old .He was castrated at 7 months old. I consider myself to be a knowledgeable dog owner having done rescue for many years and owning my 10 dogs.ACP does not work for him. I am reluctant to muzzle him as I want to make certain that he can pant,also think it may make the aggressive behaviour worse .He is probably behaving like he does because he knows that he will get away with it but knowing that still doesn't help me..Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!
    What coat conditioner do you recommend for a Pomeranian ,also can you recommend a detangling that really works

    As a Groomer watching this makes me cringe. Just shave him down with a 10 and call it a day. With this temperament and age it's more about health and that he's comfortable than "cute". He doesn't need to go through all that brushing it's just stressing him out even more. Smh! I literally was screaming "just shave it!" Into my phone.

    This dog reacts exactly like my toy poodle Samson. Samson has never been abused. We have had him since he was 6 weeks old or so. I love him like crazy, but he is almost impossible to groom. I have never even tried taking him to a professional groomer because I fear he will bite them, as he has bitten me. I like the leather glove idea! I'll use that next time. It takes me several hours to get him clipped,, doing it in installments. It is very stressful for both of us. Samson is almost 9 years old and it never gets any better with each time. I have tried soothing, treats, calm voice, gentle brushing, introducing him and letting him check out the tools, nothing makes it better. I just think some dogs are neurotic for unknown reasons.... Poor babies. He acts as though I'm torturing him. It's really EXACTLY like this pooch. When we're done, he's just a happy little boy running around like nothing happened, and I'm a basket case! LOL Although, reading through the comments, I happened upon Carol's. I did accidentally nick Samson slightly with the clippers when he was a pup. :( Perhaps that is all it took to ruin him. I will look into possible sedation for next time.

      +Karen Clarke Wow, it sounds like you have a tough case. Would you be open to bringing him to me in Utah? I work with an amazing team of behavior specialists who can help us groom him. We're in Draper, Utah and the place is called K9 Lifeline. We're conducting a 3-Day Grooming Workshop next month from the 24th to the 26th, and you can bring your dog with you. If not next month, maybe we can schedule a private session with you and your dog, Samson. The details are on our page: www.k9lifeline.net under the GROOMING tab. I hope you can make it, because I love to work on cases like this :-)

We personally have not used it yet but we were told 1 melatonin pill will help calm a fearful aggressive dog without making him drowsy. We hope you have found or find a solution to make grooming a more pleasant bonding experience for you and Samson. If you try the pill, let us know how it worked for you.

    I would buy yourself a "Groomers Helper" I would not groom with out one. It keeps the dog steady on the table and avoids 90% of bites. I love it for fussy seniors no muzzles needed. Also a dog would not fall off table since they are lock in on the tables arm.

    A past experience, this dog was used a muzzle but the grooming was going even harder. When a pet gets scary, it poos and pees are normal. That is why we suggest a groomer has a person with you when the grooming is ongoing, that person could be a pet owner (in this particular dog) or your assistant. (four hands are always better than two hands) This arrangement is for compassion and for the better control purposes (clean up a messy table). A right leash of a grooming table is important for you to control him, (yours is a walk-dog leash) if it's necessary trying to hang his head straight up, a pet might be resulted in more alert and sit still. Put a secure hook on the pole,;a pet would not fall off from the table (it will cause an accident) and also he cannot bite you when you are managing its body. If you know the dog a bit, please try to find a right time to groom its face ASAP because a bitten dog who almost always has a relaxed time for a groomer to do difficult spots. To apply gloves for protections are fine, but sometime they make your hands inflexible or cause pets injured by blades, find the thin leather gloves when a pet has been tied up probably. Besides, a groomer should be aware his arms as well. Simply saying, right tools, right moments and speeding up grooming time.

    He's so scared of being hurt that he'll hurt himself to avoid it. I adopted one almost this bad. I did the grooming myself, and I'm not a pro in any way. I took lots of time, did everything very slowly, talked to him, hugged him, and gave him pieces of bologna or hot dogs to change his way of thinking. I also did things for only 5 minutes or so at a time. Put him down on the floor, give him bologna, let him take a break. It worked and he trusts me much more. The owner should do stuff with their own troubled dog at least once a week, very slowly, quietly, gently and with lots of love and praise and really good treats like bologna and lots of breaks! Don't force this on them for long periods of time! The dog can improve. You have to handle them with kid gloves.

    I watched other aggressive dog grooming videos and it appeared to a constant tug of war in dominance. Most if not all of the dogs were severely abused by the owners, in my opinion but there were mats in the face of a shitzu that were the size of a nectarine . Now that pet should be notified to the animal cruelty officials. I
    Why should the dog trust another human being which grooming is aggressively forced on them in a rushed manner. Then there's a big "Oh yes, we did it, he's groomed. The dog is panting the whole time, enough so that the have to give the animal a break.
    I see that your approach is much calmer and the animals are not as abused. You're awesome. I subscribed with you and unsubcribed with them. They video was making me so tense. I couldn't watch their videos anymore.
    Great job.

    This dog is old and learned long ago that sudden movements mean disaster for him. Some groomers also fail to consider that a dog may have pain from old fractures and injuries. A simple squeeze on the leg could be agony.. Maybe he won't let go during a bite because of what happened to him in his former home once he did let go. I admire Jun for taking his time and understanding that the dog's behavior is learned, not personal.

    No no no. Putting my veterinary hat on...I could have sedated this poor dog and done a full dematt in a fraction of the time ...without causing any anxiety, stress or fear whatsoever. Putting an old dog like this through such an ordeal was uncomfortable to watch and completely unnecessary. Aside from the sheer terror of the clippers and being handled in general, the dog probably had senior mobility and joint pain making her fear aggression even more distressing to witness. Sometimes you really shouldn’t teach an old dog new tricks. I hope the owner didn’t ask you to do this again and if she did I hope you sent her packing to the vet.

    Kudos to the groomer, it takes patience and time to do this although I'm not sure I'd let the dog bite me lol! my fingers and hands are my livelihood. I am fortunate enough to work at a vet and they will give a light sedative to calm him and would monitor him. He has obviously been handled roughly in the past and the owner didn't work with the dog to desensitize him to being handled. I really like the caring attitude of this man, he seems really genuine.

    I wish I could find a groomer like you. It is so important for the young dogs to have positive experiences the first few times at the groomer. It sets the stage for a lifetime of haircuts. My geriatric poodle had become arthritic and for the last three or four years of his life I groomed him myself. He would come home stiff and on occasion he would actually limp for few days. (I did a pretty good job, it just took several days) Too bad I am in Southern Georgia.

    You are so very gracious with some of these comments. I'm a groomer too. I love your calmness and gentle handling of the dog. It's difficult to keep calm as groomers also get scared and frustrated. We are human. The most difficult part is to keep the dog from hurting himself trying to snap at you or get away from you. You handled this dog well while getting a very needed grooming done. I would just suggest skipping the combing and just clipping everything short with a snap on comb for safety. Great show of patience and kindness!

    I have two male Shih Tzu's (father and son) and although they don't bite the one tries laying down on whatever spot it is that I'm trying to use the shears. When I finally get him to lay down on his back to groom the underneath part he turns into like a "frozen chicken" forcing me to constantly pull out his leg while trying to shear him with the other hand. His son is just as bad and is always trying to jump in my lap! It's extremely tiring, so I procrastinate knowing what I'm in for!!I've invested in a hydraulic grooming table to hopefully make it easier on all three of us, but I tell you by the time I get done with both of them (around 10-12 hrs. depending how cooperative they are) I've had it and they're both just as happy as can be running around wagging their tails and wrestling. I know a lot of the problem is that they're both just spoiled-rotten, but last time I went to the vets he gave me some medication for both of the little squirts, so we will see if it helps. If they'd just stop flinching at my every move (I've never nicked either one of them) and fighting me every step of the way we'd have it made and I'd probably be able to get them done in half the time or less. What I really need is a couple more hands! lolAnyway, I just wanted to let you know that your patience with the little guy in the video is something everybody including, myself needs to practice on! Regardless, of some of the comments you can see that the little dog has had some kind of negative trauma in his life, so I commend you and your partner how patient and calm you were.
