Respeitado onde? Kkkkk.

@@0u_rs97 I don't agree. Pedro II wasn't a modernizing monarch by any means. He couldn't be: brazilian monarchy was founded in retrograde social forces and a pre-capitalist, colonial economy, and maintaining this state of affairs was vital for the survival of the regime. No wonder, every major change was avoided and progress was slowed down to the accepted minimum. The proof is all around: despite the relative political stability, economic growth was very small, infraestructure made slow progress, social indices were atrocious and slavery was manteined far beyond what was desirable. The abolition of slavery was the first crack in the foundation of the regime, and it eroded as a castle of sand. The Republic, in turn, broke the immobility, dared to take risks and, in result, promoted greater economic and social advancement, creating a much more dynamic country. This change of pace can already be seen in the First Republic itself: superior economic growth, better social indices, the beginning of industrialization while enjoying the height of export economy, and great progress in infrastructure. The price to pay was some political instability, as usual in an environment of fast paced changes.
@@octavioaugusto3733 Pedro's reign ended just because he wanted to end slavery with first giving his slaves freedom in 1840 and help out the working class which the elites didn't like. He also brought stability to the to the region of south America with crushing Paraguayans that were trying to militarize themselves. He founded his own school and gave scholarships to Brazilians to go study abroad. He was also very secular with religion with even support the free masons. With most of these changes the elites hated it and worked with the government to start the 1889 coup and overthrow the monarchy, after proclaiming the republic it had start off with instability, rebellions, slow progress industry. Like the two naval revolts, and federalist rebellion.
@0u_rs97 That's a very simplistic and Manichean way of seeing history. Consider Pedro II as someone who "fought the system" to "protect the poor" is absurd: the emperor was the system. He knew his power was grounded on the support of slave owners. Therefore, he never directly challenged them. The emperor only publicly supported measures for gradual abolition, - the formula defended by slave owners - and did everything he could to postpone immediate abolition. He knew any radical change would kill the regime. It did, eventually. Furthermore, none of the things you pointed out indicate a modern monarch, but only a mildly liberal one. The political stability you ponted out never really translated in progress, because it was rooted in mantaining the colonial status quo. Brazilian economy lagged behind Argentina and Chile during the Empire. Fast progress only came with the Republic. You mentioned industrialization: it happened under the Republic. Industry was virtually non existant during the Empire and by the First Republic, it was already growing sustainably at 10% per year. Vargas will take it a step further state sponsoring industry. Finally, saying the slave owners "conspired" to overthrown the monarchy is also plain wrong. There were no slavery supporters among the republican and military conspirators. I dare you to name one. The frustrated slave owners withdrew their support to the monarchy, therefore allowing it to crumble, but never were directly involved in its overthrow.
