I think the intention of Ike's hesitant is because for first time players. Especially at harder difficulty it's likely that one of your units probably died unless you reset for them.
I'm surprised they made so much alternate text. I guess they sort of had to since certain characters need to stay alive to help drive the plot, but it's a nice touch and helps give more weight to actions

All the alt. dialogue when the brothers die are so damn deep and sad omfg. I think I remember bits of an after-battle dialogue of Oscar with his brothers dead and the talk he had with Ike just wrenched my heart: Ike was really apologetic about their deaths and Oscar was just...I think he started talking about how their parents abandoned them and how he gave up being a royal knight to support them and how he thought he'd finally find a good life within the Greil mercenaries and OHH MAN I just wanted to cry. Guys, do me a favor and NEVER let any of the brothers get killed, EVER. :'((
When Rolf joins the party, and if Oscar is dead, his conversation with Boyd is completely different. It turns from some friendly sibling banter into Rolf crying because he doesn't want Boyd dying while he's hiding. He even specifically said "Oscar went off to battle, and never came back." It's really sad.
Tfw Boyd died bc of a 1% crit from an armored unit during the chapter 8? map on the last wave, on the last unit to move. I honestly wanted to restart the chapter, but I figured that, it would be okay, Rolf still has Oscar..... RIP My Boy-d
vince Mccarthy not really, boyd is the 3rd best unit you get in the mercs, his base hp is great for choking, he has the best weapon type in the game and gets acces to hand axes quick. ike and somewhat oscar need babying so boyd is really needed for the 2nd maps couple of turns.

This is really sad. I just finished PoR about two weeks ago and I found the characters endearing. Now I'm the type of player who always resets everytime a unit dies (except Shinon in that playthrough. Forgot he's supposed to talk with Rolf first but I was too lazy to restart) and seeing this is just heartbreaking.
Sometimes I have the urge to continue with the story once a unit dies in a notable manner (Such as holding a choke-point so everyone else isn't overwhelmed) but I can never bring myself to do it. Either everyone makes it... or no one does!
Exactly! Once a unit dies, I go "Nope, nope, you're not dying on me," then reset. Radiant Dawn's making do a lot of this right now orz. As for Shinon's case, I guess I didn't like him very much, so that's why I didn't bother restarting? Nah, actually another reason was I didn't train Rolf so I can't bring a loafer unit.
I lost Haar in the endgame due to not realising he was on 10 hp when I threw him into a counter attack fest. Couldn't be bothered restarting since I was already smashing Ashnard's face in with Ragnell.
Iori Megane and that's why I like the modes where units come back after each chapter or emulators so I can save after every single move so if I mess up I can go back lol, though that's for the gba games and 3D's games, I've never played the other games though I wish I could
It's always kinda awesome when things that aren't part of the main plot just *fit* like that. Like on my first run, Gatrie died in the chapter right before Shinon leaves (just after talking to Ike about how they'd celebrate together that night no less) and Shinon's departure hits way harder in the wake of his best friend's death.

I think is fire emblem in general that most of it have potential of different timeline and such to make a story good and enjoyable with a character alive or dead, and making your own experience
I really want to see how the rest of the game goes on till the end with Ike being the only character alive/playable. So please make more of these if you can.

Boyd has it the hardest in the beginning, speed sucks, defence sucks, luck sucks. Have to pretty much baby watch him lol

The game has a much different tone when you aren't scared to let a few units die. Iron Man playthroughs are built around this concept.
