Good memories of this game. P.O.W. was in my local fish and chips shop in the late 80's, it was a SNK machine that also had Prehistoric Isle on it. Myself and some friends would play them games often.
We put a lot of ten pence coins in that arcade machine.
The chip shop would often have a new machine at least every 6 months.. Players choice, Neo Geo and many others.
Good nostalgic memories.
And a lot of gas stations we had Neo Geo's here in the states which is where I first encountered the system. Good times
Prehistoric Isle looks neat. Thanks.
@@ProctorSilex there is a part two.. I prefer the original version.
Part two is on Neo Geo.
Enjoy.
How odd, this is the exact same memory of this game I have...not the same chippy is it? 😅
"P.O.W.", "Renegade", and "Double Dragon II" were on my perpetual rental list at the ol' mom and pop in the town where I spent the first 10 years of my life.
I had the pleasure of playing the P.O.W. arcade game exactly ONCE... and I was left with this feeling, like "man, why can't my NES make the game look and sound this good?"... Double Dragon II left me with a similar feeling.
The experience honestly made me avoid the arcade for quite some time. I didn't want to ruin my opinion of the games I either owned or rented by playing the FAR superior arcade versions.
I got over that when "Mortal Kombat" first hit the arcade!
Great stuff as usual, Pat!
I had exactly the same experience with Playboy magazine and real females...
Yes, we were all curious what the conversions were going to look like and usually we were a bit disappointed. Thanks
LOL
@@adamkane7513At 9 and 10 years old?
Good for you, I guess...
Don't worry... I was smoking by 11.
Another instant like because I give credit where credit is due!! When it comes down to the best youtuber ever........ how you cannot appreciate his efforts??? Keep up the good work Patman!!! Because we all love you and we always look forward to watching new material!!!
You are thee man, thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed the content my friend
Pat deserves way more subscribers than what he has. He gives it to ya straight without any of the added B.S and he's not blabbering about PRONOUNS!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
LOL, thanks. I hear that from other people should have a lot more subscribers for some reason the channel just hasn't really taken off. I'm glad you enjoy it though. Thanks@@Roger-fs5yo
Than if you give credit, add quarters to his patron so you can be a man of your word.
Man, another classic!!!
I played this as well back in the day, but only limited because i hardly had money.
It was mesmerizing to me as a young guy, especially the weapons like knives and assault rifle.
This was a great follow up for me after Double Dragon and Bubble Bobble.
Classic 1980s
I loved this game!
So do I
I always wanted SNK to someday announce that the player characters in P.O.W. - Prisoners Of War were, in fact the Ikari Warriors. It would make sense if they were the same characters.
I used to love this game when I was a kid. I'll always remember the local video rental shop just down the street from where I lived had a machine that took a lot of my money. The bottom left of the CRT screen was discoloured on this particular machine. Interesting that I remember so clearly such a mundane detail, but there you go.
It’s a shame that SNK never gave P.O.W. a sequel on the Neo Geo. Especially considering how many other early franchises got them.
I thought he became a character, possibly playable in Metal Slug series.
Oh I agree, it definitely need to do
Your videos are like a warm comfort blanket for me for some reason. I love watching them!
I was also the developer/writer of the POW nes hack that turns the game into Rambo first blood part 2!
One thing I did want to correct you on though, was that you said in the NES version you were restricted to only moving left and right, but that’s actually not the case… in the video footage you even move up and down a bit.
Regardless, great vid as always, Pat!
You're right, what I meant to say was there was no animation for moving up and down the plane like there was in the arcade game.. Thanks
Good video dude. I remember spending a lot of quarters on this game in the arcade back in the day.
I recently picked up the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection for my Xbox One and it has both the arcade version and NES version of P.O.W. (along with many other classic SNK titles).
Thanks for showing my model of the cabinet for this great game. This was always a favourite of mine when I was little.
It's a very cool cabinet
Love your videos. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Good stuff, Patman! Our local bowling alley had this one, along with a Superman arcade. I was on a league with a friend of mine, and before the game would start, we'd always toss a few quarters into it. SNK rarely disappointed back in the day.
They were a company like konami and Capcom or you knew typically it was going to be a quality arcade title
Awesome video as always! Loved this!! Thank you!!! 🔥💯💫
Glad you enjoyed it!
this was honestly the first ''real'' side scrollling beatem'up i played on nes, before DOUBLE DRAGON and i loved it, it is a good game and very fun, kinda hard for me back when i was young but the weapons were good and how u blew people away, good game, love it.
Yes, a bit difficult but a lot of fun
Great video Patman!! I wanted to let you know that there is a 2 player rom hack of the NES version. I've tried it and it seems to work fine!
2 player is so much more fun.
I must seek out out the ROM...
Only now I'm in my 40s I no longer have a buddy I can play couch co-oo with!
Did not know that,Very cool. Thanks for the info
Another masterpiece from Patman. Thanks my friend. Retro rules!
Thanks buddy, I agree 100%
Well done as always, PatMan! The NES soundtrack for this game is a personal favorite of mine. It's one of those games that's underrated/appreciated and I'm always happy when I find others who know it.
Yes, it's really good. Thanks
That music on the NES.
🔥🤘🏼
It's on fire
Pre Neo Geo SNK games were always fascinating.
I agree, the later stuff on the Neo Geo hardware was extremely cool as well but I also like to the 80s games
True classic, arcade and NES version were hard. My Christmas 1989 was epic with POW and Ninja Gaiden under the tree
Sounds like a fantastic Christmas
I played this game so much at the arcade. My friends and I used to put in camp and pretend in our backyards.
Always learn something new in your videos. great game. love the way the enemies are sent flying across the stage when knocked out
Thanks a lot, I always thought it was hilarious about the enemies flying as well
This game sure packs quite a punch. I believe the stage 1 theme was the only track that was re-created on the NES version.
Yes it does, thanks
This one was always a favourite when the funfair came to my small town for a few days in the summer, pretty much the only time I saw an arcade in my youth (Apart from the one time we went on a family trip to Blackpool and the arcades there blow my tiny mind)
It's crazy to think that carnivals used to have an arcade section where they would have 20 or 30 games on display.
Always great content Pat. I used to love to hear that game in the arcade, especially the punch/kick the enemy away sound
Yes, they always had such a distinct sound. Thanks a lot
Never played this on the NES or in the arcade. i will definitely give it a go now after watching this, Pat.
Have Fun!
P.O.W. is far from my favorite SNK or even SNK 40th Anniversary Collection game (I like Vanguard way more than anyone that only started playing it a couple of years ago probably should). But P.O.W. also isn't a bad game. Especially considering it released before Final Fight changed the beat 'em up genre.
It is pretty tough. I never quite got the hang of dealing with the knife guys. And I would say the stages, like many of SNK's early stuff, were just too long. I think SNK's games with long but few stages would have been much better off being broken into smaller ones.
This review has me wanting to fire up the ol' Steam and play a few games of P.O.W. and maybe a few other early SNK arcade titles. Excellent work.
Thanks, the levels are extremely long considering there are only four of them in the game can be completed in about 20 minutes
I loved this game on the NES as a kid, finished it multiple times. It's the reason that to this day, I want a brass knuckle, the game convinced me it was the best weapon ever invented.
I never had a pair of brass knuckles But my older brother did And I always thought there were cool. Of course he was a bit of a fighter as well though
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries they're highly illegal in Canada, and Im more of a mock and run away, kinda guy anyways.
Thanks for another solid retrospective Patman, keep up the great work!
Thanks, will do!
So. Hear me out.
I am 25. I played this game when I was 4. My aunt owned an actual original arcade column of this game. I played it with my cousin Daniel. We could click the coin clicker as much as we wanted for as many lives as we wanted…
This game is close to me. I really wish I had one of those arcade columns again for this game…an emulation is just not the same.
CONGRATURATION ON ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO 😁
I too really liked this game in both arcade and nes also had the stand alone ps3 psn game and now on the snk 40th collection
Thanks! The 40th anniversary collection is awesome byy the way
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentariesdid you get my little joke did Congratulations is horribly misspelled on the end game screen for POW prisoners of War on NES😊
I think I still have this on the ol PSP! I guess I should revisit it as it seems like a nice little beat em up
It is a lot of fun
Holy crap Patman!!!! You just helped a decades long mystery of mine. I knew i played a game with these scenes!!!! I swear i thought of this game years ago, but i wasn't sure if i had actually played it on the NES when i was a kid. I thought it was just a false memory or a fever dream. .... it was cool to see you mention Guerilla war. That and Iron tank were 2 of my favorites back then.
I sunk many of my mom’s quarters into this game at our local Roses department store
I always played it whenever I had the chance as well
What makes the game interesting is that it is "Rocket Tag Gameplay" in a beat-'em-up -- pretty much everyone including YOU die in only a few hits. And with weapons, most are one-hit-kills.
That bald guy is apparently mr x from
Kof before anybody knew him.
Yes, it's tough
"Snake" not because of Metal Gear, rather Metal Gear's Snake is inspired by Snake Plissken from Kurt Russel's "Escape from New York."
This is likely the case here as it was a hugely popular "American" movie character around that time. A good amount of japanese manga, anime and game characters that were "tough Americans" were named Snake in the late 1980s due to that film.
Makes sense, thanks for the info
The game runs on the same hardware as "Street Smart" and "Ikari III - The Rescue". Sound effects are even the same. It would make sense if the guys in this game are actually the Ikari Warriors; Ralf Jones and Clark Still. I've always had this theory that it's actually them, even though SNK has never confirmed it. Anyone else with me?
I'd Like to See the History of ARKANOID
Scrolling beat em ups were like crack back then.
Oh, no doubbt LOL
Your stuff is awesome. I'm such a big fan. Have you ever done one on just a style of games? Like 4 player arcade games? Simpsons, Gauntlet, Xmen, etc? Anyway, people, LIKE COMMENT AND SUBSCRIBE!
Thanks, I appreciate that. I haven't done one on a particular style of strictly for player titles but that's a good idea. I will keep that in mind. Thanks
Wow cool video man ! 😊
Thanks! 😁
I love P.O.W arcade I think I rented it in January 1989
It's a great game
Classic game I spend a lot of quarters on this and never beat it. But I have it on my handheld emulator
It's a classic and I really enjoyed
It's so funny to me how many of the enemies that come at you are unarmed. Imagine this prisoner escapes and murders literally hundreds of your peer soldiers many with his bare hands and then they tell you to just go out and stop him and don't even give you a sharp stick. 😅 Like fighting a Gorilla on meth with a machine gun.
LOL good call
How about "SAR: Search and Rescue"? It always seemed like one of the more gruesome arcade games I've seen out there.
Good call, completely forgott about that one
most deadliest flying kick in gaming history tanks for docu
LOL no doubt
The NES sprite reminds me of Billy from double dragon for NES
LOL yes he does
I always ask myself while watching the beginning of this game where our hero got ahold of the explosives to blow up the door to escape in the first place?🤔
Double Dragon meets Rambo!
Exactly
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I first encountered this game at Deer Run, a hotel in New York. I didn’t know it had an NES version until now, which is far better.
Hey Patman, please don’t take this as nitpicking because I truly enjoy your content. As a big fan of the arcade and NES games, I just want to clarify a couple things for the viewers:
- The name Snake could not have been inspired by Metal Gear Solid, because it wouldn’t come out for another 10 years. It could have come from the first Metal Gear, or from the original inspiration for Solid Snake, the character Snake Plissken in the movie Escape from New York.
- In the NES port, the armor does not grant invulnerability. It makes you impervious to bullets and thrown knives.
- Fun fact: some SFX from this game would later be reused in SNK’s arcade fighter Street Smart, which came out one year later.
Thanks for another great history lesson Patman, as somehow I missed this title in 88(so many war titles back then), and I have no memories of it on the NES either. I was in the 11th grade at the time, and had pretty much stopped going to arcades mostly, until Street Fighter 2 hit several years later. So some games from this era fell between the cracks, it looks pretty good for the time, so for sure I'll give it a go on MAME. And that PC remake with the exploding bodies, yeah, that looks crazy cool as well.
Played both the arcade and NES version. Enjoyed the NES version more
I liked both the really missed the two player co-op
Happy little games
Hope you enjoyed it :-)
youre showing sections where you can move up and down the plane
I own P.O.W. for the PS5! Have you heard of Mia beat em up by konami?
Yes, I have played a few times
awesome game
I agree
YES!!!!!!
God the 80s rocked!
I couldn't agree more
I still remember the sdtk, and sound effects! That backfist was so sweet! Thank you for these videos!

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentariesthere's a funny glitch with the knifeguy rolling around the screen.
It's hilarious.😂
When I play it on MAME I use the cheat codes to have infinite ammo and just shoot AERYBODY!!!!
I used the auto fire cheat when making this video :-)
I was 12 and this was like grand theft auto to me
Good video but you can walk up and down in the NES version. Not sure what you were talking about there.
There are no up-and-down animations like in the arcade game
The Arcade versions of these games are always going to be superior from SNK. P.O.W. on NES is probably still fun not perfect but look at Guerilla War it was actually a pretty good port on NES.
I was the 1kth like!
P.O.W.= fun 1 quarter kickfest
The bald guy was mr x from kof
Before he was even a thing.😂
FIRST!!!!! Finally I get to christen the greatest content on RUclips 🫶🏽
Nice of you to say my friend, thanks
If the bad guys here were the Vietnamese it be ironic af how the US invaded Vietnam and then call your guys detained ad prisoners of war.
the same punch sound is in street smart by SNK great work most appreciated
Nice, good call
Glad you caught that as well😎👍
this is consistently one of my favorite channels making some of my favorite content
How utterly fantastic of you to say, thanks
Was about to crash an get some sleep but i can't now cause P.O.W. was one of my favs along with Bloody Wolf!
Bloody Wolf is great as well, forgot about that one
Another snk hit.. one of my 7-11 games.. it was so good bought the arcade board. Even the nes version was actually good. Had no idea there was a windows version. I've always like the port comparison of these videos. A lot of them never knew they existed. Thanx! Patman!
We had this at the bowling alley in Kitzingen Germany. I don't remember a lot growing up, but I remember where each arcade game was.
Absolutely, thanks for watching
I've got Patman fever I'm going outta my mind. Thanks for this, Pat. I hope you and your family had a nice Thanksgiving. And a big thank you for all your content this year as it is much appreciated by myself and no doubt many others too.
I love this channel. It embodies exactly what I want from youtube, from top to bottom. Entertaining, informative, and often very funny. Thanks Patman!
Thanks so much, I really do appreciate the comments
I owned the Jamma boards for this and double dragaon. I made my own super gun to play it with my amiga monitor. good times.
That would be fantastic with an Amiga monitor :-)
The Man has RETURNED.🤘😆🤘
Slowly but surely, thanks
This one was of my favorite game of that year. I used to beat it with .25c while taking no damage. Jump and kick most of the time. I still wonder how they got the dynamite to break out of the cell.
That's fantastic! As far as a dynamite, they had to smuggle it….I just won't say where
They ripped off MacGyver 😆
I picked up some flower (9 lb Hammer) and I’m smoking to your videos! Great job!
LOL, thanks buddy
Never played or saw the arcade version but rented the nes version a few times
I loved this game
i remember playing this one at 7-11
I bought a collection of SNK games for Switch and this was one of the games that was on there. It was pretty cool, but it seemed like the characters moved a little slow. Of course this was the NES version of the game and was probably always like that, it's just been a while since I played it and forgot about it💁♂️
The SNK collection is really good
Ha, that was funny about the SBD released in the Elevator, Patman. ;) SNK, famous for Samurai Shodown 2 and King of Fighters, also made a lot of fun sidescrollers including POW here. Thanks for the helpful history of this classic action brawler/battle game! This reminds me of the new GI Joe Brawler game on the way for 2024+. Thanks!
LOL, thanks buddy
Patman, you wouldn't shatner in your pants in a crowded elevator would you? 💩 All of SNK war games are legends that I've played in elementary school💪 great video as customary.
LOL, maybe once or twice. Thanks buddy
Another jump back in time! Saw this at a field trip to the skating ring in middle school. Never played it myself, but watched my friends play.
When I was a kid I always wanted to play as “Willy” in double dragon because he had a machine gun. I was so excited to see POW in the arcade because of the machine gun. Did you feel this way?
Thank God, light the fuse let's do it
Let's gooooooooo! Iconic opening that's for sure
I hope you talk about the Nemo arcade in the future.
I use to play the arcade version of P.O.W - Prisoners of War at this old Pizzeria in the middle of the woods back in the very early 90's. Seriously, while I was in my family car with my parents driving, we would always enter an area where it was nothing but WOODS (trees, trees and more trees. Sometimes deer and a beer if we got lucky). This Pizzeria would be in the middle of the woods and the building wasn't in the best shape, the workers looked like they were former convicts, but the pizza was MAGNIFICENT (New York style pizza in the middle of the woods. It's like a bunch of pizza making criminals left New York City and went to hide out in the woods in the middle of nowhere and they made the BEST pizza ever). Anyway, they always had a perfectly working P.O.W - Prisoners of War arcade machine in that Pizzeria and I would get tons of quarters from my family (and sometimes FREE quarters from the Pizza makers at the place, they were very nice people) and I would play that game over and over and over. It's one of my favorite childhood memories from the 1990's. I have no clue what happened to that pizzeria and P.O.W arcade machine after the 90's ended, but I was very happy when SNK released a modern 40th anniversary collection that has the arcade version of P.O.W -Prisoners of War on it.
That is fascinating. When I started reading it and almost sounded like a five nights at Freddy's fanfiction. I wonder what ever happened to it?
cool and odd. what town, state, general area was this?
Absolutely love POW. unlike the awful street smart, which is a guilty pleasure- its actually really good!
Its an interesting time with these snk games, as they are not neogeo and dedicated boards. Nerdy as hell, but that sorta stuff fascinates me.
Yes, love the old school SNK titles. Heck, even love the later ones
Wow - how old is that remake version on pc?
Looks sorta jank, but also pretty cool with the gore 😅
The remake probably 10 years old or so
This is awesome I remember playing this when I was a little kid
Yes, I always had fun with it as well
POW is a total knockout video game. I've spent so many coins in the arcade in the late 80's and POW is being one of many reasons. Solid vid PatManQC.
Thanks buddy
Another great video and a real trip to nostalgia land for me! Damn! That Windows port really pulled no punches with its blood and gore! Took me by surprise.
I was surprised as well, thanks buddy
Good morning, Good to see a fresh video to watch. Keep up the videos you're doing great.
Good morning! Thanks a ton, hope you enjoy it
Great video as always, dude!!!
Thanks !
It’s crazy you’re not 1 million subs
How extremely nice of you to say, wish more people thought like you :-)
Angry Nerd, Patman, and Sega Lord X…..all I need
How nice of you to say, thanks
Pizza Hut in Farmville, VA had the arcade game back in early 1991. Oh my God I wish I can play this
i only played this game in the Arcades growing up. Back in the day in my opinion "ikari warriors" was Rambo & this game in my opinion again Snake was Chuck Norris from the Missing in Action Movies. Chuck Norris was known for kicks & boy when you kick someone they went flying! Chuck Norris kicks so hard there isn't a scale to measure the amount of force he has on it! When playing this game I would enter the Arcades with a fist full of quarters & this game would take my quarters as prisoners! Ha-Ha!
Great game!
I agree
Oh yes, this is another great classic! Another of the cool ones from SNK no less. In my opinion the gameplay is similar to Street Smart! You need to take care in attacking your opponent and moving away just before being counterattacked.
Here's a little hint: Listen carefully to the sound effects from P.O.W and Street Smart as your opponent goes flying after being hit by a power move; they are very similar and both made by SNK. 😉
