They're not the most powerful nor fuel efficient but 2 stroke Detroits are one of the most durable engines ever made. When they do need rebuild it's an easy job to throw in new sleaves. Got 4 of them on the farm, 3 in equpment and 1 in a 1968 Pete. 2 years ago saved an old 1957 Eluclid crawler with a 6-71 Detroit burried in the woods for 40+ years just like this dragline your saving. I knew it would run. DD53’s are amazing. You can’t hurt them. I always loved how they prime the fuel so easily when you change the fuel filters and how high they will rev! I had one run away and it will scary you silly how loud and fast they can rev. You can’t close that air flap fast enough! I also had one run backwards which is fun to see exhaust smoke out the air filter, but the best one was when one threw a rod out both sides of the block and the guys were still running it! It had no oil in it, and the block looked like a window, and you had to floor it to make it move and yet the still ran it for about 45 min like that before I showed up. Tell me that isn’t one amazing engine.

Yep that is a 353 series. You confirmed it for me when it cranked and ran. The 53 series has distinct sound that is different from the 71 or 92 series Detroits. 6:16 Bobcat is actually running their own engine designs now for a lot of applications. The current one has a very interesting piston design that reduces emissions to the point of not needing the SCR systems on the larger tier 4 stuff. We run a fleet of Doosan loaders and excavators, Honestly aside from a few weird issues that also plagued a few other brands they have been really well designed and built. Way easier to service than the bobcat and hitachi(john deere) stuff of the same size.

This is the type of job I've dreamed of doing for years now, I love EVERYTHING heavy equipment, especially the old stuff. My favorites are some of the Koehring diggers. I can't wait to start doing stuff like this in the future. So many older machines like this have been either scrapped, or lost to the flow of time. I love to see videos like this of people saving some machines that others might consider a lost cause. I want to thank you for doing the things you do to help preserve pieces of history like this, and I hope that maybe one day, I can have the chance to preserve a machine like this, maybe even have the honor of working alongside you one day. Again, thank you for doing what you do. You rock!

Man, this one brought back a few Navy memories. The equipment I primarily worked on were generators powered by 4-53s and 6-71s, but we had some gear that ran 3-53s, too - mostly hydraulic service jennies. This was 50s technology in the late 90s/early 00s. Had a blast working on that stuff.

Those old 2 stroke GM diesel engines were one of the classic diesel engine designs in all of history. I used to work on them and still have a couple in my garage and some parts for others. My youngest son is fascinated with them. The cleverest thing of all that GM did was to design an entire system of engines of varying cylinder arrangements, that all share common parts.
The 71 series were the best known early ones. They made them all the way from 2 cyl to 12 cyl. Any cylinder liner and piston from any of those engines could be used in any other 71 series engine with no issues. A 4 cyl head would fit on one side of an 8V-71, a 6 cylinder head would fit one bank of a 12V-71 and so on. This was critically important to the US military in WWII as they were used in everything, especially boats. Common parts saved an awful lot of grief in getting parts to where they were needed. These engines were all first cousins to the 567 series of 2 stroke diesels that were used in Electromotive Diesel Railroad Locomotives. They are just bigger, but similar design principles.
After the war they did the same with the 53 Series. My next door neighbor has a 2-53 power unit, mounted on its own skid frame with radiator and fuel tank. He uses it to power his small sawmill. We have a couple of 3-53's and lots of parts, 2 6V-53's in old trucks, one running, and one not but could be. They can sit for years without freezing up as they don't allow air to get inside the engine very well. The are dead reliable. I live in Maine and tons of 3-53's were used in skidders in the woods. Still a lot of em around. My son loves working on them. They are old fashioned but a very simple and easy engine to work with. I used to install more than a few new ones in commercial fishing boats early in my career. The environmental issues put them out of fashion, sadly. They were tough and built to work. This modern machinery is not built to do that for too long as they will need you to buy a new machine in a few years. These old guys will run forever if you take care of them! Dont ever start one up that's been sitting until you make sure the injectors are not stuck. You can have a runaway real quick. Don't ask how i know that. I saw a man's heavy winter coat thrown into the airbox of a 6-71 in the shop one day that suddenly had a mind of it's own. The only way we could stop it quick.

After watching your channel for a long time it's really cool to see how your are becoming a knowledgeable authority on old diesel vintage machinery. Not that you weren't in the past, but you are always learning as you go and that makes your channel very interesting. Especially as I was also learning watching you research, learn by trial and error and just fix stuff. I personally love to troubleshoot, especially machinery.
This video you came right in being very familiar with the motor and you knew exactly what to do. And you were impressing the old guys! I would be one of those old guys. Hahaha
