Meanwhile, our leaders made us work and get badges. Thus, I am with Brandon. Camping is when the hotel hasn't hosted royalty.

When I was a kid, I loved the idea of hunting. Not killing animals, but I loved the idea of going out into the woods and just see stuff. It wasn't until I was much older when a friend of mine suggested an idea that she loves to do: Nature photography! Like she goes out into the woods with a camera. Find a nice secluded spot and just snap photos of the wild bears and deers and all as they appear. I have seen photos, they look amazing! I haven't done it myself, but it would be a good alternative to hunting. :)
Listen, Brandon. My husband's job is about to be relocated to SLC. I will be your camping butler. I will learn to drive a camper. I can already camp cook. I'm even good at relocating wildlife!
Enjoyed hearing Dan's Klondike experience. I too went to a couple of Klondikes ("Klondike Derbies", formally). I wrote an essay about it in high school that I titled, "Hell Frozen Over", which should give an idea about what a pleasant experience those campouts were. On one of them, I remember setting up my tent on the snow - there wasn't really a choice since it was a few feet deep and I couldn't set up on earth anywhere - and during the night, it rained, and also my body heat started melting the snow which then trickled into my tent and got half of my sleeping bag soaked. I moved over into a corner of the tent that was slightly higher than the rest (where my body heat hadn't melted the underlying snow yet) and tried to wrap the driest parts of my sleeping bag around me. After lying there shivering for hours, I finally gave up. I rebuilt the campfire and stood by it, shivering but somewhat less miserable from about 3:00 am until morning. Good times on the Klondike! I DO still like camping though. Just not in the snow.
Now I get to say I have cooked for one of my favorite authors! I work in the Tree Room at Sundance. Until this podcast though, I had no idea he came in. Glad you liked it and i hope you’ll come back soon!
I can relate to your camping woes, as I have experienced my share of camping done wrong. However, once I discovered hammock camping, it became an absolute pleasure to go camping! As with all other forms of camping, hammock camping can be done wrong, but done right, it is wonderful. The gear is compact, lightweight, and comfortable. I have taken many scouts camping over the years, and converted many of them to hammocks.
Just started reading the hero of ages and also just started listening to oathbringer. Been on a Sanderson kick for a while. Mostly scifi guy but love your fantasy series.
Fellow recent Eagle Scout here Brandon who very much agrees with your take on camping. Nature is fun. Activities are fun. Sleeping outside without a shower is decidedly not fun.
Considering Brandon's affinity to water, I think he would love an overnight on the San Juan. The upper canyon is so scenic, the guides do everything for you and you could totally set up and write for hours. I've had the opportunity to do the trip quite a few times and sitting at the banks is amazing.
A lot of my favorite trips have been excursions with school, most of which had a strong camping part. We have so many diverse locations and climates here in Colombia, that it's great. One of my favorites was the trip to the nevados where we went from the Páramo, walked all the way to the snow border at the Santa Isabel, and then all the way down the mountain to about 2000m above sea level, so already hot climate. It was a very long walk on complicated terrain each day, but it was gorgeous.
Wow. Hearing Brandon describing Wood Badge in America. In the UK it's just... what you get when you finish Leader training. With exciting things like "how to plan a program", or "safeguarding". Also, I've never in 20 years camped somewhere that didn't have a shower. Because you're right, that's icky.
When I was in the Boy Scouts (and Civil Air Patrol) we used surplus Army shelter halves. For part of that time, I lived in Germany, so much of the time was camping in cold rain. Where we proved that canvas tents are, shall we say, "semi-permeable". They're also heavy to haul around and tiny for two people. But they're durable and they're warm(er) in the snow. When my son was in Boy Scouts (also an Eagle), they used more modern tents that were great in most weather, but they were fragile. And they didn't hold heat anywhere near as well. During that period, I used to tell him, "You'll either have a great time or you'll have stories you can tell for the rest of your life." He has a robust collection. 8-) After all of that, the only reason I would camp these days is if there were just no way to get to where I want to go on a day hike or by vehicle.
One summer as a scout I went up to help run some of those teambuilding activities for woodbadge. It was very fun to be a 15 year old making adults struggle to do all the activities we often did as scouts. Unsure if they enjoyed the other end of that experience as much.
I haven't been watching intentionally blank for a while now and just played this after like 20 eps. Damn Brandon looks good with a beard. Idk why but it makes him look more professional or smth 😂😅
I think the story idea where your childhood imaginary friend helps protect your mind from invasion just needs a little Star Trek. For example, imagine Bing Bong from Inside Out showing up to help Captain Picard get off the Planet Kataan in the TNG episode, The Inner Light, or breaking O'Brian out of the prison on Argratha in the DS9 episode, Hard Time.
27:28 oh I would freaking love to hear “Brother Sanderson” teach Sunday School!!! And so cool of “Brother Wells” to be on the bishopric. Proud of these famous rich nerds being good guys lol
Fellow Eagle Scout here, I'm actually going to Woodbage in September. I think of camping as reading time. I actually read John Scalzi's "Kaiju Preservation Society" at our last campout.
My favorite camping story is we spent a week out in the blue mountains in eastern Oregon, then the last day is started to rain, so we tore down everything as fast as we could and only ended up very wet lol
I love being out in nature and I always think I'm going to enjoy camping. To some extent I do, but just driving to a campsite and pitching a tent has never been my style, hiking has always been part of the camping experience for me. But either I go alone, in which case I get bored because I'm alone, and because I'm alone I have to keep to easier trails closer to society and within cell service and stuff since I don't have any fancy red equipment. Or I go hiking with other people, in which case I'm mostly alone anyway, only then I'll have to hear people complaining about me moving to fast or too slow every time we stop.
If you know what you are doing, those Springbar tents go up super quick and stay up really well, will admit there's a learning curve, but i've set up so many of those over the years. they are great tents. But i'm also one of those people who is spoiled by modern beds. I have not found a combination that lets me sleep through the night while camping. But i also have nearly as much trouble sleeping at hotels.
My wife chuckled at Brandon's line about not liking fish despite having it a lot over two years in Korea. Because same. Also holy crap, I did Klondike once! We were lucky enough to have a cabin but it was STILL not enough for me to come back lol
During my first camping trip as a boy scout, I received a tent that smelled of vomit and I was unable to use a chair that had a back to it, since it was against the rules for non-eagle scouts. That was also my last camping trip as a boy scout.
I agree with Dan on this one. Privation is extremely good for you over and beyond appreciation of nature. Though Brandon is right in that sleeping outside isn’t fun.
It's bizarre (but mostly good) to hear them talk about their religious life experinces. As someone who grew up very religious with mostly bad memories of it all I guess I find it comforting that other people's experiences in that life aren't like mine.
I caught a bluegill once. Took it home and put it in my aquarium along with my goldfish. At least I was told it was a bluegill. I'm not sure, because it was very blue, and most the pictures of bluegills that I find aren't very blue.
I realize this might not be a discussion we get in today’s polarized atmosphere, but I’d love to hear Dan discuss that line about socialism further, particularly in light of a past church president’s admonitions against that and communism. But that delves deep into both religion and politics, which doesn’t tend to be this podcast’s vibe, so I’ll just leave it as a voiced wish. Great stuff as always guys 👍
Hey all, there´s a new Wyrmwood product that´s called Groundskeeper. It´s a deck of cards that featuers a cute litte smoking frog. I wonder how Dan and Brandon will spin this guy into the narrative :)

I, too, had a horrible time sleeping in a tent. Toss and turn for 4 or 5 hours, actually manage to sleep for maybe two hours. Camp food is often not the greatest. And then one time, finish breakfast, all pile into the leader's truck for the 1 1/2 hour drive back home ... and vomit all over it. Yuck! Loved the rest of the experience, really should not have been a fan of the camping, though.
