The good thing about it is that Rita also went through what Tom Cruise is going through at the ending (getting to know people deeply, but they will forget after the day resets) because Rita once had the power and lost it. So in some sense if Tom Cruise just explains to Rita what he experienced and how they beat the mimics together, Rita will understand and they can start their relationship over again.

The only thing I didn't like about the actual ending, was that Tom Cruise got Deuce Ex'd back to life, thus cheapening his sacrifice. I would have preferred something like: The Omega reset the day, but with every drone dead, and also Cruise. So nobody knew he ever did anything. The only person to have a clue that he saved the day somehow would be the female protagonist (I forget her name).

While this would've been a terrible ending, I also feel that the sappy "everyone survives somehow" ending was also pretty lame. There should've been no final reset that for some reason brings Cruise's character back to the starting helicopter ride. The whole team should've been wiped out but successfully managed to destroy the Omega, ending the loop. The ending should've been news broadcasts on the morning of the invasion mentioning that the mimic advance had halted and the war was over with no one knowing it was Cruise and his squad who were responsible.

Eh... I'm not sure the original ending would be pointless but the reward for his character development would have less of an emotional payoff.
In other words, he stops being a gutless douchebag just to save the day...and then gets killed? If you identify at all with his character arc, which is the goal of most writer's intent, cages sacrifice would feel more hollow.
