I googled how to enlarge and project onto canvas without a projector and it led me to you! This is the exact low tech solution I was looking for! 🎉 Thank you for this video!
I saw this and thought it would help me with a large portrait I am working on. I had hit a dead end , or so I thought, for days. I was working from a small photo, which I hate doing but had no alternative. The portrait seemed OK but just a bit 'Off'. I did masses of drawings, couldn't get it right and I was desperate. I found your wonderful "OWLY" image and today I made a box, got some film, my phone, a sharpie and tape. I couldn't find your blog so I did it from memory. I drew the major points (I was making a portrait of my husband, so it has to be good). I taped it in the box and took it to the portrait. I was amazed that I had actually got it right in the painting and it matched the projected drawing! I was delighted. It was the shape of the head that was throwing it off and that was easily corrected. I am SOOOOO grateful to you for your wonderfully simple projector and your very sweet and direct way of presenting it. I will use the method to sketch out portraits in future, but I am also delighted that I had got it right in the first place! I have had to return to painting seriously in old age to make ends meet, so this is not a pleasant hobby. Thank you so much I am eternally grateful not only about your video , but also because it restored my confidence!!
Oh wow, this is such a lovely comment - thank you so much for letting me know how much it helped you as that means a lot to me. It's such a simple method that works so well and I'm glad you able to correct what went wrong. I hope all your future portraits go well ☺
Very much like the old masters used to do. You have brought a very affordable way for anyone to enlarge an image. I use a projector, but I am lucky to have one. This is so nice for those who want to enlarge images.
My Dear Friend! My overhead projector fell and stopped working. I have been searching all morning for a work around. After tedious DIYs, apps that are bogus, and a great deal of frustration, I found your video! From one artist to another, much thanks!🤗💜
I was looking at buying a projector, but definitely going to give this a go - thank you Emma! I have lost my confidence with freehand drawing, so this is very useful for me.
you are right freehand drawing is not easy, it takes plenty of practice. Vincent Van Gogh said, to be a Fine Art painter, you have to start with drawing. Wish you luck with your paintings
Brilliant!! I am a silk painter and I frequently need to enlarge my drawings to the proportion of the canvas I will be mounting my silkpainting on (photo>tracing>enlargement). This is by far the simplest, easiest, and cheapest means I have seen of doing that! Thank you for saving me $ on a fancy projector:))))
Ingenious! Thank you for sharing, you’re saving people hundreds of dollars on a projector 💚💚💚 thank you immensely! May you receive prosperity, wealth and large sums of money everywhere you go. Happy Holidays, Emma!
You are a life saver!! I am making a display at work (Lowes) for the christmas tree tent area. I needed to project an image onto a fence panel so I could paint it on there. Our projector is missing and to rent one for a 20 minute job was crazy. I have tried some other methods and they didn't work. THIS WAS PERFECT!! I can't thank you enough for making this video!!
This is awesome. I've been asked to do a human portrait. Animals are my specialty. Given the fact that the family member knows exactly what the loved ones looks like, there is no margin for error. This is brilliant.
That's an ingenious approach, I'm impressed. You have me thinking now about how to make a version with up to a 24x36 inch canvas horizontally on a table with an Anglepoise or clip lamp so i don't have to crawl about on the floor with my bad back.
This is such a great idea! I think I’ve heard of it before, but you explained it all so well. I trace a LOT, using carbon paper or just laying down a lot of graphite or color pencil on the back of the photo or image, bc I just don’t want to take forever before I can even start painting… the drudgery of erasing, drawing, adjusting, erasing, again, and on and on before I can even get get going with the best part. Thanks so much!
Yes I totally get the struggle of years of tracing and drawing graphs and erasing so I was so happy to find this technique and I'm glad I can share it with everyone 👍🏻
This really saved me spending so much money for an enlarger! I’ve been admiring the large canvas paintings of a dogs face on a large canvas in my vets office. I’m definitely going to use this method to Wow the friends
Thank you so much. This is incredible! Other ideas I've seen with cardboard are quite involved, so I don't bother. Yours is so simple and works. Thanks again.
Brilliant! I've been struggling for hours this week, trying to get an image on a large canvas; I'm pretty picking about sizing. I was looking at expensive (and bulky) projectors; this is easy, quick and don't take up any storage room. THANKS!
What a cost saver Emma! This technique will never fail because of equipment failure or connection with a mobile device issues, further more it does not require us to download yet another App to accomplish this task! Brilliant! I'm going to use Clear Acetate or Mylar Sheets to trace my images onto because they are perfectly flat, and you can choose how thick you want it to be. Furthermore, you can easily save the image in a file folder or manilla envelope, should you want to use it again in the future! My Mom was an elementary school teacher for 38 years; the Clear Acetate or Mylar sheets I'm referring to are the exact same thing she used with the overhead projection machines in her classroom!! I have considered purchasing an old used overhead projector, but they are hard to find. I think there is only 1 company that still manufactures these machines and the price of a new projector is apx $300. Thank you for this content Emma! ~~Christy~~
Hi Christy, thanks so much for watching! I'm so pleased that you've found this technique helpful and cost saving 😁 I used to think about buying a projector before I found this method and it works exactly the same! x
Excellent video! Camera Obscura, Camera Lucida and now we have Camera Emma. Old school projector. Thank you for this. The art to this is approaching it from the right angle so to not obscure your lines. That's a challenge. thank you for this!
I need to save this process for my digital work! Thank you! Could be a huge game changer for me! I was actually looking for a completely different method to transfer my digital work to canvas when I found your method!
Youre a blessing to me...since i am in my early senior years i am having hard time to see detailes in my sketches ...so i love this tutorial it will help me a lot.Ty so much!!! 😍😘😙
So simple, so low tech, so primitive, so ingenious! I didn't think it would work without a lens, but it sure does. Better than a pantograph, certainly you can get things much bigger. I want to scale up outlines of horses running so I can transfer the shapes and create 3D stucco horse art work on outside of my house, this is perfect. I may use plastic food wrap, cellophane taped together to trace the large original artwork. Thanks so much Emma, very cool, I love it!
@@lesliemiller3628 I ended up buying the projector about a year ago and It was pretty nice! I haven’t used it since then tho. It’s good for mini movie nights. How did the bulb almost burn your phone? Did you project it onto your phone?
This worked beautifully! I enlarged a 7x10 inch photo of two zebras from our safari onto a 36x48 canvas. Now I'm getting ready to do my creative work. Thanks!
This is the fastest method I've seen.I used a shoe box (threw away the lid) and cut a rectangle in the bottom. Fast! Simple! Worked good enough for making my poster!
Great idea. I've been looking at projectors today but then looked for an alternative and found this. I want to paint pictures from photos I have taken and I don't have them printed out, so I'm just going to trace them off my PC monitor instead :-). Top tip people.
Omg! Emma! You are a genius! Thanks so much for the video and the demo. The best ever. You can also use transparency sheets for the tracing. I bought a large piece to make a grid, but I can now cut it to the size I need for this project. Inexpensive, works great and you can do it in any size you want. This is the best video. Blessings and be safe.
Wow..😯 This is pure genius.👏👏🙌 Thank you so much for sharing 🙏🙏. You're the best.. I'm SO subscribing to this channel ASAP.. finally my search is over.. trust me, I've searched, and you're the only one person on RUclips with the best idea. God bless you dear.🌹❤️🌹

Amazing hack! I was about to spend over $60 on a mini projector that would’ve stalled my project for days! Thank you so much for this important tip!!

Wow! That is so much faster than using a grid method to enlarge things! Thank you!!!
Yes!! I remember the days I used to use a grid, so long!! 😅
@@EmmaRave I am still using the grid. I find it faster than digging out an overhead projector, setting it up and using it. But this is faster.
