  • This is what they call a work-horse. A '69 Olympia SG3 with a brilliant appeal. This machine has deserved a place on my work desk (50-50 because i currently don't have any room on my shelving and i am trying to pawn some machines to other people.)
But none-the-less, for $5,- a some inconvience like space is no comparision to the fact that in today's world you can buy a typewriter for a price like that. Am i right or what. This machine is a wonderfull piece to use. The paint is in very good condition, and there is no rust to be spotted anywhere...which is not to be said of my weathered older model that i own and that spend over a month in the snow in the month of december. It works, but it really has gotten some scars from mother nature. This machine, however has been untouched by the elements and is smoother then melted chocolate. This is machine that still has lots of life in it and doesn't accept the whine of being old fashioned, because that just fades into the background the moment you place your fingers on it's keys.
I bought this along with my 1960's Underwood 21 also for the same price on the same day. This machine came with a good looking dust cover which i keep on at all times unless i am actually using the machine. That is in fact what i am always doing with my machines. I dust them sometimes but as every typewriter collector knows...dust is a big problem when it comes to collecting these beauties. The have so many tiny gaps and places where the dust can crawl in, that it becomes essential for the original dust covers to be put back into use, or the owner creates some for them by hand like BKtypewriters101 managed to do for many typewriters that he owns.
This machine is a interesting piece. It lacks lots of features that were put onto the older versions of this machine. The SG-1 is equipped with four colour selections instead of three, has a key unjammer and way more characters. It has eight options in line spacing and is equipped with a paper-feed leaver that does load the paper automatically with just a jerk. The old SG-3 lacked the four colour selections, and didn't had the double spacing option (on some versions). However, there was still a paper-feed leaver on the machine, (right hand side, on top of carriage. It had a switch for changing the distance the paper traveled.)
Yet, this machine doesn't have the paper-feed. It also doesn't have any other features added, which is interesting. Would that mean that there was yet more money shortage when this machine was manufactured? Or did people not prefer the features? I find the paper-feed leaver rather handy, but that all depends i think.
Interesting things to think about, innit.
