So yes, you are absolutely correct in starting with the New Testament, especially Hebrews 11:4-6 to learn the full story from Genesis 4 because as you said, we learn that Abel's offering was accepted because of his faith. But if we break that down we can also fill in the blanks of the other questions and we'll see that Scripture answers Scripture and through revelation we don't have to "guess" or "assume" what the Truth is!! (So because we KNOW Abel's offering was made in faith, we can start by answering where does faith come from??) So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17 NKJV (So for Abel to make a sacrifice of faith then it must be concluded that Abel "heard the Word of God" on how to make an acceptable sacrifice to God, then he believed the Word he heard, and then he applied the word he heard and believed to his works!! And by doing this God deemed him righteous!! Which is exactly what the author of Hebrew tells us of Abel!!) By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks. Hebrews 11:4 NKJV (And we know from Scripture that our righteousness comes from our believing God, i.e. faith!!) For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works: Romans 4:3-6 NKJV (It's in Genesis 3 that we learn where and from whom Abel heard the Word from on how to offer sacrifices to God!!) Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. (So we see that as soon as man fell he turned to works to try and cover himself in God's Presence) And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.” (And from this Adam and his wife hear God prophecy that she will have a child) Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. (And from this we learn that anything that comes from the ground from now on will ONLY come by works, not grace!!) And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. (Adam does this by faith as his response to the Word of God they heard that the woman would have a child) Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them. (And therefore God removed their "dead works" of fig leaves and replaced them with skins, the first shedding of blood, proof of their righteousness by faith because of Adam naming woman Eve, and the method taught as to how to worship God and re-enter His Presence for them to pass on to the next generation) Genesis 3:7, 15, 17, 20-21 NKJV (And by seeing the positive result of Abel's offering by faith we can then conclude that the reason Cain's sacrifice was NOT accepted was because it was offered by works and not by faith!! Therefore God would not and could not accept it since He's the ONLY source for salvation!! Not only could this offering not please God, but it was actually even a sin against God since it was not done in faith!!) But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6 NKJV But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin. Romans 14:23 NKJV (And thus why we can know for sure that the reason Cain's offering was not accepted was because his was of works and were not of faith and therefore evil in God's eyes!!) Not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous. I John 3:12 NKJV (Both Cain and Abel were worshippers of God, just as is the case of both wheats and tares in church today. Both brought their offerings to God, again as is the case in today's church. But only 1's offering was made in faith and therefore only 1's offering was accepted, as was then is also as is now!!) *One last note on Cain...he is NOT the physical/biological son of "the wicked one" (Satan/Devil) as so many misconstrue from Scripture because of their lack of understanding. As the Word says, "nothing beyond what is written" and "do not add nor subtract from His Word!!" As it says in 1 John 3:12 "Not as Cain who was of the wicked one" this is speaking of his spiritual father, because as it says in John 8:34 "everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin." So because Cain was committing sin (acting not in faith), he was of his spiritual father Satan and therefore a slave of sin. We do NOT need to add to His Word what's not there for "shock value," there's more than enough that IS THERE to last several lifetimes my brothers and sisters. *

Another aspect to consider is that Able offered what was later considered a sin offering. This points to his belief that he needs a savior. Cain offered what is considered a thank offering and thus saying that he does not need a savior. Cain’s attitude seems to be that of believing he is doing okay and does not need the Lord.
@@Dafterthought Hi Diana. When Adam Nd Eve fell God promised a savior that would crush Satans head. He also killed a lamb to provide them coverings thus showing that “ without the shedding of blood, there was no remission of sin”. Cain and Able were required to sacrifice a lamb for their sins based on the promise. Of course the blood did nothing, but it pointed to the hope and need of a Savior. When Cain offered his vegetables he was basically saying that his works were good enough and didn’t need to do what God required. For the next 4000 years the people of God sacrificed lambs as a sin offering until the promised Messiah came. When Jesus came, He also had to do what God required and give. Up his life so that the price of sin could be paid and His people given access to eternal life. Our works have never been enough.
@Brandon Smith2000 Bryan is close to the truth, there is sense there to be found.The sacrifices do relate to salvation. Your comments also have some truth and open up an interesting topic - doing right and not doing wrong. Adam and Eve were created good but not holy righteous. They were not creted perfect - they had freedom of choice. Which begs the question - why was man created? To help prevent the impending fall of Lucifer and the angels who sided with him against God the Father & Christ. Adam & Eve fell when they decided to rebel against God...they rejected Him and chose in preference a 'grander' existance (they were tricked into believeing by Lucifer that God was withholding from them - his arguement in heaven). Their natures became evil and they ate the fruit because of that. there was no power in the fruit - yeah. It is what comes out of a man not what goes into a man that is the problem. The evidence of their fallen nature is in their blaming of someone else and God (th woman that you gave me). They were cursed because of their fallen state. But they were saved - clothed in the skins of lambs was evidence. They accepted salvation from the Lamb slain from the foundtion of the world. They had been warned that if they ate the fruit of the tree of the KNOWLEDGE of good and evil (i.e. if they rebelled and fell) they would surely die on that same day - Gen 2:17...but they didn't, because Christ immediately gave up His life to keep them alive - and they lived as all the Sons of Adam do until they choose salvation - i.e. become reborn from above, the old stoney heart (nature) taken away and give a new hear of flesh (God's nature). Being saved, Adam & Eve (and Able - Gen4:4 Abel he ALSO brought the firstlings of his flock...just as Adam and Eve had done) sacrificed lambs to show what had happen in their life. They had opportunity to expalin to their offspring what the sacrifice meant. Only saved people do that - and are naturally obedient - by nature. Cain was not saved he was evil by birth (as was Abel) and he could only do wrong and not do right. His offering was an offering of protest and a declaration that he wanted to continue living with an evil nature and enjoying the fruits of his evil nature - they were so satisfying to him. That offering was one of work - I too should be able to receive salvation but only on my terms. THe same arguement that Lucifer was using. Cain would not be convicted of his evil state...although God tried to help him see what was inside him when he came to question him about why he was angry and that sin (wrong doing) would rule over him (he couldn't do right), and agin after he killed Able (who was killed because he tried to bring conviction to Cain instead of letting the Holy Spirit deal with Cain). It is as you say over doing right, but it is also over salvation vs. works as the other gentleman suggested....you both have valid points - I try to listen to what others are saying and test that against the word - asking the Holy Spirit to teach me...and by God he does. How does that sit with you?

Are you striving or are you abiding? There are plenty of opportunities to strive. We can all live worried, stressed, trying to fix everything in our own strength. But that’s overwhelming. Come back to a place of peace. The scripture says, “Your Father knows what you need.” He knows what you’re facing. He knows the dreams He’s placed in your heart. He sees the struggles, the unfair situations, the times you were put at a disadvantage. You don’t have to do life on your own, trying to make up for it, trying to accomplish that goal. Jesus said, “Come to Me and I will give you rest.” Stop your striving-depending on your own efforts and your own ability-that’s draining. If you’ll start depending on Him, relying on Him, you’ll feel that load lift off of you.

The cross was a demonstration of what was done before the world began which is when Jesus atoned for sins.On the cross Jesus was lifted up like the serpent in the wilderness to draw men to him in salvation. We see Simeon taking the baby Jesus in his arms and saying that he has seen God's salvation. Jesus was born a savior and king before he even went to the cross.He is the lamb slain before the foundation of the world.
Great teaching, another way of looking on this situation, is how we give to our local churches today, not everything we give, and do is accepted by God .everything should be done by Faith, without Faith it is impossible to please God, Faith is the unseen reality, that comes by hearing from the word of God ,we should act accordingly to the words of God, as the word teaches us to forgive, we should forgive others before we bring our gifts to the house of God, or to the altar, we should also submit ourselves to the true Elders, and once towards another, with brotherly love in the fear of God, there is a lot to be learned from situation.

In my own personal opinion, and this is just me so please don't quote me on this, but I have to say that Cain's offering was not pleasing to God as Abel's was, because Cain did not fear God and did not have love in what he was offering, whereas Abel feared God and took the best of what he had out of Love to sacrifice to God. But it is a good point to remember that our sin offerings have to be made with blood, because life is in blood and and through Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross A.K.A. The Eternal Perfect Lamb of God sacrificed for OUR sins, was the ultimate sacrifice that paid for all sin.

Cain wouldn't have murdered his brother if the murder wasn't already in his heart. And Cain would've brought to God an acceptable sacrifice just like Abel did if he wasn't already a murderer at heart.
This begs the question of WHY the murder was already in his heart. Could it be that he was genetically predisposed since conception??? He didn't ask to be born this way and for that matter he didn't ask to be born at all. I'm playing "devil's advocate" here.

I know I am my abels keeper. For God tells me to love all sinners as I am in my sinful earthly way. I am Always checking on my cousin abel. I love my able. We both are judged by our family and there sins. We are not our families sin. We are covered by the blood of Jesus who came to rescue, save, redeem, and Love us back to health into the Promise Land
Blood vs no blood was not the problem. Many offerings, including sin offerings (Lev 5:11) did not require blood. The problem was not giving his best, which was required in every offering we read about in Leviticus.
There's such a deep history between the teachings of Jesus (when he speaks about hating their own brothers (in Christ) throughout the New Testament) & the story originated from Cain and Abel

I do believe the very first sacrifice mention in the bible was made by God Himself when He made clothing from animal skins (Gen 3:21) for Adam and his wife, so they could fellowship with God again. Skins could mean that more than one animal were sacrificed for this sin.
The Lord sees the true nature of everyones heart and knows the end from the beginning not just in history but in every mans life. God knows all things even in our own free will. Hate and murder is in ones heart before the act is even committed.
I have questioned why God rejected Cain's offering when he gave what God handed him to manage. I figured God will probably explain when we are in heaven. However this verse sticks out when I think of this situation,. Matthew 5:23-24 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Maybe because of the way Cain felt some type of way towards Abel that God rejected his offering because the condition of his heart and not necessarily what he offered as a sacrifice! Also Cain gave leftovers & not the best... Abel gave God his best. Cain did not revere God enough to give Him the best... God causes us to obtain any blessings we get, why withhold from God what actually belongs to Him?? Also, make certain your heart is right with God...
Here is how I see it. When Adam sinned one outcome was the curse of the ground from where Adam came. God had already purposed to redeem man from the separation that had ensued as a result of that curse but it was going to be through His (God’s) effort, not man’s. And so when Cain and Abel were to offer sacrifice, God viewed their offering through those lenses - Cain brought from the effort of his fleshly ability - from the earth that had been cursed, while Abel took from the already provided lamb - a presage of the Christ, the Messiah! God had to diagrammatically demonstrate His preferred way of man’s redemption that it would be through His offering of a Lamb in our place, His Only Begotten Son!
Also, take in consideration that Abel wwent there not knowing that God would choose him, while Cain seemed to think and say "I already won this... God will pick mine..." Abel, went there saying "I will take what I thinkk is the best, if I'm not selected, I will try next time again and learn from this..." a peace of heart person... ...After that, Cain asked nervously to Abel, why did God pick yours and not mine? Mine was better than your, I bought fresh, beautiful, tasteful fruits and cereal... Why you? That's my idea...
Of course when the Law came, you had both animal and grain offerings. The key IMHO is that Abel brought "of the firstfruits" (which usually means "of the best he had", not the deformed animals) while Cain brought "of the fruit" (which could mean he brought the rotten leftovers that nobody wanted to eat, instead of the choicest). God expects our best of us, which Abel did and Cain did not.

Not for debate, but to conclude what was expected, what was acceptable, what was right or wrong when it is not definitively written is self-interpretation, subjective and in my opinion (if granted) holds no merit. What we do know is that Genesis 4:5 clearly states “But unto Cain AND to his offering he had not respect." One can safely conclude the issue is no respect for Cain. It is likely that no matter what the offering was it wouldn't have been accepted because the emphasis is Cain was not accepted. Seem clear to me.

This makes sense because it is recorded in Genesis that God spoke directly to Adam, both before and after the fall, spoke directly to Eve after the fall, spoke directly to the snake after the fall, and spoke to Himself about the possibility of man eating from the Tree of Life.
Why Cains offering wasn't accepted is because: . . . Heb 9;22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood there is no remission . No remission of sin!!!

Also, God sacrificed the first animal or animals to make Adam and Eve coats of skin: Gen 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them. And it was soon after the first sin that “the woman” received her name, Eve: Gen 3:20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
The Lord God does not accept Cain's offering not because it is not an animal, but because he is wicked. See, the Lord God asked him "why is thy countenance fallen?" that is a sign of an evil character. But Abel is meek, he never showed any disdain against Cain when his offering was rejected. He never insulted Cain for his behavior. In "Isaiah 66 1: Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? 2: For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. (KJV 1611)" Here it is clear that God accepts a humble and contrite person which is Abel and not Cain.
So... Sacrifices are made to cover for sin, the first sacrifice we see in the Bible is actually made when God covers the nakedness of Adam and Eve on animal skins. For the wages of sin are death, only blood sacrifices are acceptable to God. Adam and Eve knew this way too well before Cain and Abel where in the scene. This is theologically crucial to understand Jesus' sacrifice.
Because he could. God also expects us to not be jealous or murderous but God has no problem with it for himself. God like ourselves, if all else equal, sides with beauty. So if you are are not beautiful ..expect a back seat for eternity. Also you should be gleeful that you are a eternal slave, to either the devil or god. Sounds fantastic right?
This Question is so easy to answer. God cursed the earth . Thus crops are not only not acceptable they are cursed also . Offerings from the earth is an insult !!
Remember the sacrifice of Abraham, when God said to abraham give me the most loved thing as a your sacrifice to me, and prophet abraham was about to sacrifice his son Ishmael, his only son at the time, God then changed the offering to ramb, not fruit and vegetables....
God saw that Abel's sacrifice came from a point of his love for him; he reason that if God gave him his best he wanted to do the same for the Creator, so he took his time and gave God his best. Where as Cain's sacrifice did not come from his heart, rather more as a requirement and it felt like he was doing it because of what God had provided and not a standpoint of love. He nonchalantly throw some crops together and present it to God. So God rejected his sacrifice and Cain became enraged with "Jealousy" and eventually murdered his brother without cause.
I heard a sermon that says - Cain offering was from the cursed ground/land which is why it was not accepted by God. Cain should have know the land was cursed and so the offering was unclean.
Kind of late. I think jealousy & laziness were Cain's downfall. With context to economic values between crops vs cattle in the early days of agriculture, cattle were way more valuable & way more harder to manage (taming & breeding) than crops (gathering). In many references, Cain's "sacrifice" was "fruits", which probably something he picked randomly from his surroundings. Being the firstborn, Cain supposed to be able to learn from his younger brother about animal husbandry & combine it with crops knowledge, but he chose not to.

That what might happen if you refuse an offer and do not see the sacrifice of a person just to brought it there. If one of your two sons received love and acceptance while the other is being deprived guess what that other son will have envious feeling to his brother and might do bad to him.

The Hebrew says she added to her bearing his brother Abel; and thus, we may suppose Cain and Abel were twins, like Esau and Jacob. Esau and Jacob wrestled while in the womb. Esau (winter) being six months older than Jacob (summer) was the tough guy. Their mother, the Virgo constellation, had a touch time with her pregnancies. "Cain," it is said (Gen. 4:2), "was a tiller of the ground." The Hebrew says he was an obed, i.e., a slave of the ground (Adam). Cain is, literally, a lance; an instrument used in hunting in winter, and by metonymy, is winter itself. No; Cain was not a tiller of the ground; but like all savages, he was a slave, and subject to all the hardships and inconveniences of savage life. What kind of a "tiller of the ground" could he be whose labors were decreed by the Almighty to go unrewarded - unto whom it was decreed that when he tilled it, the ground "shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength"
(Gen.4:12), but only "thorns and thistles" (Gen. 3.18)? 'Tis true, in Gen. 3. 19, Adam is told he shall " eat his bread in the sweat of his brow;" but "lehem" here translated " bread," means food in general - such as the savage usually gets, and that too by the sweat of his face. Abel means the same as Eve, i.e., breath, life or summer. Thus. we find Cain and Abel are the true offspring of Adam and Eve; the same exactly as one year is the offspring of the preceding year. Hence, too, we find that this myth is but a rehash of that of Adam and Eve. "In process of time," reads our false version, "Cain brought of the fruit of the ground, etc." (Gen. 4:3). "At the end of his days" is the true rendering, i.e., at the end of winter, on the night before "the Beginning" of the New Year, which was at the vernal equinox. At the end of winter, then, " Cain brought of the fruit of the ground" - "thorns also and thistles," i.e., the dreary and desolate earth - as an offering unto the Lord (summer). "And Abel, he also, brought of the first-born of his flock," i.e., Aries, the first of the summer constellations. Thus, we see the two brothers, winter and summer, met at the spring equinox. "The Lord had respect unto Abel and his offering" (Gen. 4:4). Of course; and the Lord (the summer Sun) was right, for who has not respect for the seven fruitful months of summer (Abel) over which the Lord presided, and their rich and precious gifts ‘(“But unto Cain and his offering (the dreary and desolate earth), he had not respect." No wonder. The Lord-God had previously (Gen. 3. 18) cursed the ground so that when Cain tilled it, it would bring forth "thorns and thistles." And hence, I think, none of us would disapprove of the Lord's preference. "So, Cain was wroth, and his countenance fell," i.e., winter returned, when the surface of the earth was turned from the Sun, the heavens were overcast with clouds and the winds blew cold.
When Adam and Eve fell God promised a savior that would crush Satans head. He also killed a lamb to provide them coverings thus showing that “ without the shedding of blood, there was no remission of sin”. Cain and Able were required to sacrifice a lamb for their sins based on the promise. Of course the blood did nothing, but it pointed to the hope and need of a Savior. When Cain offered his vegetables he was basically saying that his works were good enough and didn’t need to do what God required. For the next 4000 years the people of God sacrificed lambs as a sin offering until the promised Messiah came. When Jesus came, He also had to do what God required and give. Up his life so that the price of sin could be paid and His people given access to eternal life. Our works have never been enough.
It’s cause Cain offered the fruits of the earth while Abel offered the fruit of his works. In other words Cain took whatever he found and offered it, whereas Abel offered what he worked hard to get. It’s easy sacrifice what you didn’t work hard to get therefore it’s not a good sacrifice.
Just because God did not find favor in cains offering should never have resulted in Cain going into a rage. He should have simply chosen better next time. Cain wasn't cursed until he acted against his brother. His poor offering did not come with a curse, not at all. The lesson is that when we fail, try harder next time.

The most notable example is the offering of Isaak, the firstborn, by Abraham. But there is also the daughter of Jephtah, offered as sacrifice to the Lord for Israel's victory over the Ammonites (Judges 11:29-40). Sacrifice requires suffering. Plants don't suffer. That's why sacrifice is made of animals (or infants), and more so, the younger ones, so the suffering is multiplied.
God used them to prove that he is not respecter of people, that braveness and generosity showed by Abel counts. The offsprings of Cain who brought the DNA of Abel inside them, such as Noah or Jacob, were the chosen ones by God. God likes to put people on a trial, he wants them to do the right thing, by making the right decision.

How could anyone know this story about Cain and Able? There was no paper or means to have written this down so where if it is true, where can I find these documents of God's own words.
The first chrildren of mankind were instructed by their parents, as that's their duties, to teach children in the ways of The most High God. The book of Jubilees let us know Adam offered sacrifice of Gold, incense and myrrh to the most High.(Those gifts are interesting) after he was sent back to the land of his creation. He knew how to worship The most High, he was convinced of sin and judgement (sign of one who has the holy spirit) and therefore taught his children how to please The most High God. Now there's no atonement of sin without shedding of blood. Abel abided in the Word and was pleasant to the most High, Cain decided to worship in his own way, Wich the most High hated. In fact, it's no different from Mathew 7 21-23. False worship or works in the name of God will be the downfall of many, as He will reject those who follow Cain because He never knew them. Let's abide in His Word.
Cute interpretation,however the truth is the "a sacrifice of the first born of the flock" did not mean willy lambs but the first born child of the " flock" whom was sacrificed to show dedication the same way got asked Abraham to sacrifice his son as a lamb!
God doesn't look at things the way we do, besides, Cain was not Adam's child, but, this is not the only case in the bible about the Lord's choices, remember Jacob and Esau, God knows everything praised be the Lord...

Abel's sacrifice was accepted because it represents Jesus. He was a shepherd and offered a firstborn of his flock, a lamb without blemished. For John the Baptiste testified "Look the Lamb of God who take away the sins of the world". Cain's sacrifice was rejected because he offered something curse. For God said "Curse is the ground, you walk on for out of the sweat of your brow, you will eat of it". God said this curse to Adam and Eve just in previous Chapters. The whole Bible glorifies Jesus, it all about Jesus. Peace in Christ.
I will never understand why an omnipresent God who controls the entire universe needs a blood sacrifice to satisfy him. The God of the Old Testament and the God of Jesus in the New Testament sound like two different Gods.
The gospel of grace is from the beginning. After sin entered the world, something had to die, blood needed to be shed, that's justice. Mankind was to offer a token, until the righteous blood of the lamb of The most High God. Salvation comes from Him. It's the same God, same gospel of salvation from the first letter til the end, by faith we are saved through the grace of God. Same message old or new testament. No bad "god" good "god" here. The problem in understanding is the same problem mankind has had since our fall...God doesn't need anything ever from us, the blood sacrifice is FOR US because we need to know what sin has cost us and the world so we will seek a savior to save us from it. Everything God teaches us to do is FOR us!! We worship Him so we will become like Him, not so He can be worshipped (because what we behold we become), we obey Him because His commands are perfect and lead to the best life man could hope to live, filled with peace and joy and love in the Holy Spirit no matter the external circumstances the world brings against us!! The reason we don't/can't see this in the Old Testament is because of "progressive revelation." Here's how I've best heard it explained...the Old Testament Saints were seeing God from the POV of a 5 year old where the Disciples/Apostles seen God from the POV of a older teenager and then Paul revealed God to us from the POV of a young adult. So walk this out: God tells them not to muzzle an ox as it treads out the grain and the Old Testament Saints say "look how merciful God is to his creation," as a 5 year old would think, but Paul (as someone with greater revelation) says "Is God really concerned with Oxen?? 10. Or isn't He really saying it for us? Yes, this is written for us, because he who plows and ought to plow in hope, and he who threshes should do so in hope of sharing the crop." (1 Corinthians 9:9b-10) and uses the same Word of God to defend a worker being worthy of his wages. This also applies to worship, or even when God commands the extermination of entire races. From a 5 year old's POV that's terrible, but from an adult's POV we know that if there's an infectious disease living in a group of people (which is what sin is, especially idolatry) they must be quarantined and IF it's incurable then they are never again released into society. So as harsh as it seems it's the very thing we still do to this day for the betterment of society as a whole. Hope this helps you understand the difference!!
An animal offering is a foreshadow of the death of Jesus. Someone who offered animal sacrifice understood that they are beyond SELF-repair and no amount of good works can earn salvation. A bloodless offering is a picture of man's doing good works for salvation. Someone who offered a bloodless sacrifice is a person who still thinks that they can perform good works and by doing so earn their own salvation. This is the reason why the 10 Commandments were given. It is to show man that they are sinners and nothing they do can change the fact that they are sinners. Salvation is not about doing good works. It is about allowing God to create a new creation or new creature that is sinless in nature. It is our sinful nature that is preventing us from entering Heaven, NOT doing sin. The evil that we do, it is because of our sinful nature.
Jesus ate Lamb at every traditional Hebrew Seder (Passover) meal, including the one just before he was crucified. *there are comments here criticizing the lawful eating of meat (?).. *Jesus ate meat, and made no new law forbidding it.

He didn't create robots but made all men living souls through His breath of life. As such we are able to choose to follow His ways or not. It's just that justice applies, the choices we make have consequences, for you personally and(that's what we forget) for oders around us. See the chain reaction caused by that being called the serpent, his covetousness brought him to invert the Truth and tempt the woman, she chooses to heed his word, and the man choosed to follow the woman, and one of their son choosed to worship according to himself, and so on and so on. But He is patient, time belongs to Him, and His justice is everlasting, the one thing we can do as his creation is to repent, for heaven and earth shall pass, but all His Word shall come to pass. Therefore He is always in control, for He has Spoken. And we are to always choose wich side of His Word we stand. Simple.
I always believed that Cain ultimately sacrificed Abel to the Lord. No matter how you look at it, or believe, Cain was doomed to fail. That is my belief and opinion.
In a shame/honor society everything in a limited good culture is in short supply. Cain saw that Abel's offering was excepted, meaning he would not get the same exceptance. Envy and jealously due to cultural perception.

The bible says that AVE took the fruit and then offered to Adam. It shows that Cain,the eldest was not the real offspring of Adam. May be AVE had mated with the serpent before she did with Adam. So the Creator knew it and was not happy with Cain. Its my raw opinion.

God ordered humans to sacrifice animals not vegetables. That is why Able's offering was accepted and not Cains. Just like God ordered humans to keep Sabbath and not Sunday. This story is evidence that what God ordains he honors. Those who feel like Sunday is as good or better than Sabbath will eventually Reject God as did Cain.
Hi What ALSO has a profound bearing on the Cain and Abel story is their NAMES! In Hebrew ‘Cain’ means ‘ Aquired’ as Eve said after bearing him ‘ I have aquired A MAN from YHWH! This is doubly significant because of the prophecy of YHWH regarding ‘ The seed of THE WOMAN’ She erroneously assumed Cain to be THE SEED OF THE WOMAN, being her first born! Eve expected Cain to be born naturally good or even naturally righteous (in the saved state she was in), but she brought him forth in sorrow..she saw how naturally evil he was, and changed her tune with the second son. Thus his name Hebel - vanity, foolishness, vapour...named to signify that her previous expectation was vanity. as God says in Gen 1:11 kind will bring forth kind.
So yes, you are absolutely correct in starting with the New Testament, especially Hebrews 11:4-6 to learn the full story from Genesis 4 because as you said, we learn that Abel's offering was accepted because of his faith. But if we break that down we can also fill in the blanks of the other questions and we'll see that Scripture answers Scripture and through revelation we don't have to "guess" or "assume" what the Truth is!!
(So because we KNOW Abel's offering was made in faith, we can start by answering where does faith come from??)
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

(It's in Genesis 3 that we learn where and from whom Abel heard the Word from on how to offer sacrifices to God!!)

And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. (Adam does this by faith as his response to the Word of God they heard that the woman would have a child)

(And therefore God removed their "dead works" of fig leaves and replaced them with skins, the first shedding of blood, proof of their righteousness by faith because of Adam naming woman Eve, and the method taught as to how to worship God and re-enter His Presence for them to pass on to the next generation)

(And by seeing the positive result of Abel's offering by faith we can then conclude that the reason Cain's sacrifice was NOT accepted was because it was offered by works and not by faith!!

Another aspect to consider is that Able offered what was later considered a sin offering. This points to his belief that he needs a savior. Cain offered what is considered a thank offering and thus saying that he does not need a savior. Cain’s attitude seems to be that of believing he is doing okay and does not need the Lord.
I don't think Bryan is is off, the whole old testament points to Christ's sacrifice for our sins Happy Easter.

@Brandon Smith2000 Bryan is close to the truth, there is sense there to be found.The sacrifices do relate to salvation. Your comments also have some truth and open up an interesting topic - doing right and not doing wrong. Adam and Eve were created good but not holy righteous. They were not creted perfect - they had freedom of choice. Which begs the question - why was man created? To help prevent the impending fall of Lucifer and the angels who sided with him against God the Father & Christ.
Adam & Eve fell when they decided to rebel against God...they rejected Him and chose in preference a 'grander' existance (they were tricked into believeing by Lucifer that God was withholding from them - his arguement in heaven). Their natures became evil and they ate the fruit because of that. there was no power in the fruit - yeah. It is what comes out of a man not what goes into a man that is the problem.
The evidence of their fallen nature is in their blaming of someone else and God (th woman that you gave me). They were cursed because of their fallen state.
But they were saved - clothed in the skins of lambs was evidence. They accepted salvation from the Lamb slain from the foundtion of the world. They had been warned that if they ate the fruit of the tree of the KNOWLEDGE of good and evil (i.e. if they rebelled and fell) they would surely die on that same day - Gen 2:17...but they didn't, because Christ immediately gave up His life to keep them alive - and they lived as all the Sons of Adam do until they choose salvation - i.e. become reborn from above, the old stoney heart (nature) taken away and give a new hear of flesh (God's nature). Being saved, Adam & Eve (and Able - Gen4:4 Abel he ALSO brought the firstlings of his flock...just as Adam and Eve had done) sacrificed lambs to show what had happen in their life. They had opportunity to expalin to their offspring what the sacrifice meant. Only saved people do that - and are naturally obedient - by nature. Cain was not saved he was evil by birth (as was Abel) and he could only do wrong and not do right. His offering was an offering of protest and a declaration that he wanted to continue living with an evil nature and enjoying the fruits of his evil nature - they were so satisfying to him. That offering was one of work - I too should be able to receive salvation but only on my terms. THe same arguement that Lucifer was using. Cain would not be convicted of his evil state...although God tried to help him see what was inside him when he came to question him about why he was angry and that sin (wrong doing) would rule over him (he couldn't do right), and agin after he killed Able (who was killed because he tried to bring conviction to Cain instead of letting the Holy Spirit deal with Cain).
It is as you say over doing right, but it is also over salvation vs. works as the other gentleman suggested....you both have valid points - I try to listen to what others are saying and test that against the word - asking the Holy Spirit to teach me...and by God he does. How does that sit with you?

Are you striving or are you abiding? There are plenty of opportunities to strive. We can all live worried, stressed, trying to fix everything in our own strength. But that’s overwhelming. Come back to a place of peace. The scripture says, “Your Father knows what you need.” He knows what you’re facing. He knows the dreams He’s placed in your heart. He sees the struggles, the unfair situations, the times you were put at a disadvantage. You don’t have to do life on your own, trying to make up for it, trying to accomplish that goal. Jesus said, “Come to Me and I will give you rest.” Stop your striving-depending on your own efforts and your own ability-that’s draining. If you’ll start depending on Him, relying on Him, you’ll feel that load lift off of you.

The cross was a demonstration of what was done before the world began which is when Jesus atoned for sins.On the cross Jesus was lifted up like the serpent in the wilderness to draw men to him in salvation. We see Simeon taking the baby Jesus in his arms and saying that he has seen God's salvation. Jesus was born a savior and king before he even went to the cross.He is the lamb slain before the foundation of the world.

Great teaching, another way of looking on this situation, is how we give to our local churches today, not everything we give, and do is accepted by God .everything should be done by Faith, without Faith it is impossible to please God, Faith is the unseen reality, that comes by hearing from the word of God ,we should act accordingly to the words of God, as the word teaches us to forgive, we should forgive others before we bring our gifts to the house of God, or to the altar, we should also submit ourselves to the true Elders, and once towards another, with brotherly love in the fear of God, there is a lot to be learned from situation.
I always thought of it that it wasnt so much of the offering but of how it was offered and you could tell by the way Cain reacted.

In my own personal opinion, and this is just me so please don't quote me on this, but I have to say that Cain's offering was not pleasing to God as Abel's was, because Cain did not fear God and did not have love in what he was offering, whereas Abel feared God and took the best of what he had out of Love to sacrifice to God. But it is a good point to remember that our sin offerings have to be made with blood, because life is in blood and and through Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross A.K.A. The Eternal Perfect Lamb of God sacrificed for OUR sins, was the ultimate sacrifice that paid for all sin.

Abel offered the best he had... Cain offered only what he did not want for himself.
Cain wouldn't have murdered his brother if the murder wasn't already in his heart. And Cain would've brought to God an acceptable sacrifice just like Abel did if he wasn't already a murderer at heart.
You know what's even more fucked up? God knew that Cain would kill Abel, and God let that happen. Gods an asshole.

Blood vs no blood was not the problem. Many offerings, including sin offerings (Lev 5:11) did not require blood. The problem was not giving his best, which was required in every offering we read about in Leviticus.

There's such a deep history between the teachings of Jesus (when he speaks about hating their own brothers (in Christ) throughout the New Testament) & the story originated from Cain and Abel
Hebrews 11:4, NIV: By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.
Is Faith the key to the answer?
I do believe the very first sacrifice mention in the bible was made by God Himself when He made clothing from animal skins (Gen 3:21) for Adam and his wife, so they could fellowship with God again. Skins could mean that more than one animal were sacrificed for this sin.

I have questioned why God rejected Cain's offering when he gave what God handed him to manage. I figured God will probably explain when we are in heaven. However this verse sticks out when I think of this situation,.
Matthew 5:23-24
So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
Maybe because of the way Cain felt some type of way towards Abel that God rejected his offering because the condition of his heart and not necessarily what he offered as a sacrifice!

How do you know Chain’s offer were leftovers?
Here is how I see it. When Adam sinned one outcome was the curse of the ground from where Adam came. God had already purposed to redeem man from the separation that had ensued as a result of that curse but it was going to be through His (God’s) effort, not man’s.
And so when Cain and Abel were to offer sacrifice, God viewed their offering through those lenses - Cain brought from the effort of his fleshly ability - from the earth that had been cursed, while Abel took from the already provided lamb - a presage of the Christ, the Messiah! God had to diagrammatically demonstrate His preferred way of man’s redemption that it would be through His offering of a Lamb in our place, His Only Begotten Son!

Of course when the Law came, you had both animal and grain offerings. The key IMHO is that Abel brought "of the firstfruits" (which usually means "of the best he had", not the deformed animals) while Cain brought "of the fruit" (which could mean he brought the rotten leftovers that nobody wanted to eat, instead of the choicest). God expects our best of us, which Abel did and Cain did not.

Not for debate, but to conclude what was expected, what was acceptable, what was right or wrong when it is not definitively written is self-interpretation, subjective and in my opinion (if granted) holds no merit. What we do know is that Genesis 4:5 clearly states “But unto Cain AND to his offering he had not respect." One can safely conclude the issue is no respect for Cain. This makes sense because it is recorded in Genesis that God spoke directly to Adam, both before and after the fall, spoke directly to Eve after the fall, spoke directly to the snake after the fall, and spoke to Himself about the possibility of man eating from the Tree of Life.

And it was soon after the first sin that “the woman” received her name, Eve: Gen 3:20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
The Lord God does not accept Cain's offering not because it is not an animal, but because he is wicked. See, the Lord God asked him "why is thy countenance fallen?" that is a sign of an evil character. But Abel is meek, he never showed any disdain against Cain when his offering was rejected. He never insulted Cain for his behavior.
In "Isaiah 66
1: Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?
2: For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.
(KJV 1611)" Here it is clear that God accepts a humble and contrite person which is Abel and not Cain.
What would happen if people stopped worshipping God altogether and not made any sacrifice to God?
So... Sacrifices are made to cover for sin, the first sacrifice we see in the Bible is actually made when God covers the nakedness of Adam and Eve on animal skins. For the wages of sin are death, only blood sacrifices are acceptable to God.
Adam and Eve knew this way too well before Cain and Abel where in the scene.

God saw that Abel's sacrifice came from a point of his love for him; he reason that if God gave him his best he wanted to do the same for the Creator, so he took his time and gave God his best. Where as Cain's sacrifice did not come from his heart, rather more as a requirement and it felt like he was doing it because of what God had provided and not a standpoint of love. He nonchalantly throw some crops together and present it to God. So God rejected his sacrifice and Cain became enraged with "Jealousy" and eventually murdered his brother without cause.
I heard a sermon that says - Cain offering was from the cursed ground/land which is why it was not accepted by God. Cain should have know the land was cursed and so the offering was unclean.

Kind of late. I think jealousy & laziness were Cain's downfall. With context to economic values between crops vs cattle in the early days of agriculture, cattle were way more valuable & way more harder to manage (taming & breeding) than crops (gathering). In many references, Cain's "sacrifice" was "fruits", which probably something he picked randomly from his surroundings. Being the firstborn, Cain supposed to be able to learn from his younger brother about animal husbandry & combine it with crops knowledge, but he chose not to.

This would indicate that Cain's birth occurred at the winter solstice, and so was coincident with the birth of Jesus Christ. Abel means the same as Eve, i.e., breath, life or summer. Thus. we find Cain and Abel are the true offspring of Adam and Eve; the same exactly as one year is the offspring of the preceding year. Hence, too, we find that this myth is but a rehash of that of Adam and Eve.
"In process of time," reads our false version, "Cain brought of the fruit of the ground, etc." (Gen. 4:3). "At the end of his days" is the true rendering, i.e., at the end of winter, on the night before "the Beginning" of the New Year, which was at the vernal equinox. At the end of winter, then, " Cain brought of the fruit of the ground" - "thorns also and thistles," i.e., the dreary and desolate earth - as an offering unto the Lord (summer). "And Abel, he also, brought of the first-born of his flock," i.e., Aries, the first of the summer constellations. Thus, we see the two brothers, winter and summer, met at the spring equinox. "The Lord had respect unto Abel and his offering" (Gen. 4:4). Of course; and the Lord (the summer Sun) was right, for who has not respect for the seven fruitful months of summer (Abel) over which the Lord presided, and their rich and precious gifts ‘(“But unto Cain and his offering (the dreary and desolate earth), he had not respect."
No wonder. The Lord-God had previously (Gen. 3. 18) cursed the ground so that when Cain tilled it, it would bring forth "thorns and thistles." And hence, I think, none of us would disapprove of the Lord's preference. "So, Cain was wroth, and his countenance fell," i.e., winter returned, when the surface of the earth was turned from the Sun, the heavens were overcast with clouds and the winds blew cold.
Why does an 11 minute video have 3 minute advertisements?
When Adam and Eve fell God promised a savior that would crush Satans head. He also killed a lamb to provide them coverings thus showing that “ without the shedding of blood, there was no remission of sin”. Cain and Able were required to sacrifice a lamb for their sins based on the promise. Of course the blood did nothing, but it pointed to the hope and need of a Savior. When Cain offered his vegetables he was basically saying that his works were good enough and didn’t need to do what God required. For the next 4000 years the people of God sacrificed lambs as a sin offering until the promised Messiah came. When Jesus came, He also had to do what God required and give. Up his life so that the price of sin could be paid and His people given access to eternal life. Our works have never been enough.
It’s cause Cain offered the fruits of the earth while Abel offered the fruit of his works. In other words Cain took whatever he found and offered it, whereas Abel offered what he worked hard to get. It’s easy sacrifice what you didn’t work hard to get therefore it’s not a good sacrifice.

Just because God did not find favor in cains offering should never have resulted in Cain going into a rage. He should have simply chosen better next time. Cain wasn't cursed until he acted against his brother. His poor offering did not come with a curse, not at all. The lesson is that when we fail, try harder next time.

In many places, two things important to please the Lord: the fat must burn, so the odor is pleasing to Him; the offering must be a first born. See Leviticus !, Genesis 8:21, Exodus 29. The second, the offering is a young animal, a baby one even, a lamb, etc. and better yet if firstborn. The most notable example is the offering of Isaak, the firstborn, by Abraham. But there is also the daughter of Jephtah, offered as sacrifice to the Lord for Israel's victory over the Ammonites (Judges 11:29-40).
Sacrifice requires suffering. Plants don't suffer. That's why sacrifice is made of animals (or infants), and more so, the younger ones, so the suffering is multiplied.
God used them to prove that he is not respecter of people, that braveness and generosity showed by Abel counts. The offsprings of Cain who brought the DNA of Abel inside them, such as Noah or Jacob, were the chosen ones by God. God likes to put people on a trial, he wants them to do the right thing, by making the right decision.

How could anyone know this story about Cain and Able? There was no paper or means to have written this down so where if it is true, where can I find these documents of God's own words.
This is information that was passed down from the old, first world, the way it was before the great flood.
The first chrildren of mankind were instructed by their parents, as that's their duties, to teach children in the ways of The most High God.
The book of Jubilees let us know Adam offered sacrifice of Gold, incense and myrrh to the most High.(Those gifts are interesting) after he was sent back to the land of his creation.
He knew how to worship The most High, he was convinced of sin and judgement (sign of one who has the holy spirit) and therefore taught his children how to please The most High God.
Now there's no atonement of sin without shedding of blood. Abel abided in the Word and was pleasant to the most High, Cain decided to worship in his own way, Wich the most High hated.
In fact, it's no different from Mathew 7 21-23. False worship or works in the name of God will be the downfall of many, as He will reject those who follow Cain because He never knew them.

Abel's sacrifice was accepted because it represents Jesus. He was a shepherd and offered a firstborn of his flock, a lamb without blemished. For John the Baptiste testified "Look the Lamb of God who take away the sins of the world".
Cain's sacrifice was rejected because he offered something curse. For God said "Curse is the ground, you walk on for out of the sweat of your brow, you will eat of it". God said this curse to Adam and Eve just in previous Chapters. The whole Bible glorifies Jesus, it all about Jesus. Peace in Christ.
I will never understand why an omnipresent God who controls the entire universe needs a blood sacrifice to satisfy him. The God of the Old Testament and the God of Jesus in the New Testament sound like two different Gods.
The gospel of grace is from the beginning.
After sin entered the world, something had to die, blood needed to be shed, that's justice.
Mankind was to offer a token, until the righteous blood of the lamb of The most High God.
Salvation comes from Him.
It's the same God, same gospel of salvation from the first letter til the end, by faith we are saved through the grace of God. Same message old or new testament. No bad "god" good "god" here.

The problem in understanding is the same problem mankind has had since our fall...God doesn't need anything ever from us, the blood sacrifice is FOR US because we need to know what sin has cost us and the world so we will seek a savior to save us from it.
Everything God teaches us to do is FOR us!! We worship Him so we will become like Him, not so He can be worshipped (because what we behold we become), we obey Him because His commands are perfect and lead to the best life man could hope to live, filled with peace and joy and love in the Holy Spirit no matter the external circumstances the world brings against us!!
The reason we don't/can't see this in the Old Testament is because of "progressive revelation." Here's how I've best heard it explained...the Old Testament Saints were seeing God from the POV of a 5 year old where the Disciples/Apostles seen God from the POV of a older teenager and then Paul revealed God to us from the POV of a young adult.
So walk this out: God tells them not to muzzle an ox as it treads out the grain and the Old Testament Saints say "look how merciful God is to his creation," as a 5 year old would think, but Paul (as someone with greater revelation) says "Is God really concerned with Oxen?? 10. Or isn't He really saying it for us? Yes, this is written for us, because he who plows and ought to plow in hope, and he who threshes should do so in hope of sharing the crop." (1 Corinthians 9:9b-10) and uses the same Word of God to defend a worker being worthy of his wages.
This also applies to worship, or even when God commands the extermination of entire races. From a 5 year old's POV that's terrible, but from an adult's POV we know that if there's an infectious disease living in a group of people (which is what sin is, especially idolatry) they must be quarantined and IF it's incurable then they are never again released into society. So as harsh as it seems it's the very thing we still do to this day for the betterment of society as a whole. Hope this helps you understand the difference!!
An animal offering is a foreshadow of the death of Jesus. Someone who offered animal sacrifice understood that they are beyond SELF-repair and no amount of good works can earn salvation.
A bloodless offering is a picture of man's doing good works for salvation. Someone who offered a bloodless sacrifice is a person who still thinks that they can perform good works and by doing so earn their own salvation.
This is the reason why the 10 Commandments were given. It is to show man that they are sinners and nothing they do can change the fact that they are sinners. Salvation is not about doing good works. It is about allowing God to create a new creation or new creature that is sinless in nature. It is our sinful nature that is preventing us from entering Heaven, NOT doing sin. The evil that we do, it is because of our sinful nature.

God teached man how and what sacrifice should be offered to him, when God himself perfor the first sacrifice in the garden of Eden to provide Adan and Eve their garments, from where do we think they got them? of course Adam and Eve talked to their kids that story and how God performed the sacrifice, Abel follow those indications by faith, Cain was a rebel and want it to do what he thought was best, God will only accept what he staished not the works of man

He didn't create robots but made all men living souls through His breath of life.
As such we are able to choose to follow His ways or not. It's just that justice applies, the choices we make have consequences, for you personally and(that's what we forget) for oders around us.
See the chain reaction caused by that being called the serpent, his covetousness brought him to invert the Truth and tempt the woman, she chooses to heed his word, and the man choosed to follow the woman, and one of their son choosed to worship according to himself, and so on and so on.
But He is patient, time belongs to Him, and His justice is everlasting, the one thing we can do as his creation is to repent, for heaven and earth shall pass, but all His Word shall come to pass. Therefore He is always in control, for He has Spoken. And we are to always choose wich side of His Word we stand. Simple.
I always believed that Cain ultimately sacrificed Abel to the Lord. No matter how you look at it, or believe, Cain was doomed to fail. That is my belief and opinion.
Because Abel did what God told him to do. Cain did it his own way.
In a shame/honor society everything in a limited good culture is in short supply. Cain saw that Abel's offering was excepted, meaning he would not get the same exceptance. Envy and jealously due to cultural perception.

Grain offerings are mentioned in the Bible along with animal sacrifice.
It stops abruptly after it speak of Cain remaining as a fugitive.
I don't think the details of the sacrifices matter as much as the point of illustrating that there happen to be two sides to mankind...conscientious good guys and the jealous bad guys
The bible says that AVE took the fruit and then offered to Adam. It shows that Cain,the eldest was not the real offspring of Adam. May be AVE had mated with the serpent before she did with Adam. So the Creator knew it and was not happy with Cain. Its my raw opinion.

God ordered humans to sacrifice animals not vegetables. That is why Able's offering was accepted and not Cains. Just like God ordered humans to keep Sabbath and not Sunday. This story is evidence that what God ordains he honors. Those who feel like Sunday is as good or better than Sabbath will eventually Reject God as did Cain.

What ALSO has a profound bearing on the Cain and Abel story is their NAMES! In Hebrew ‘Cain’ means ‘ Aquired’ as Eve said after bearing him ‘ I have aquired A MAN from YHWH! This is doubly significant because of the prophecy of YHWH regarding ‘ The seed of THE WOMAN’ She erroneously assumed Cain to be THE SEED OF THE WOMAN, being her first born! This is evidenced by the fact that she called her SECOND son Abel, which in Hebrew means ‘ VANITY’!!!! In other words WORTHLESS compared to Cain, who was the AQUIRED ONE from YHWH! In actuality expecting him to fulfill the role of THE SEED OF THE WOMAN!

Eve expected Cain to be born naturally good or even naturally righteous (in the saved state she was in), but she brought him forth in sorrow..she saw how naturally evil he was, and changed her tune with the second son. Thus his name Hebel - vanity, foolishness, vapour...named to signify that her previous expectation was vanity. as God says in Gen 1:11 kind will bring forth kind.
