    Welcome to the story of Our Italian Dream House.
    We sold our apartment in Stockholm, packed up the car and headed for Piedmont in Italy. After a couple of months searching for the right house we came across Our Italian Dream House and immediately made an offer. Four weeks later (just three days before Christmas) we signed the contract and had the keys.
    It's now mid 2023 and work on this epic renovation is well underway. We are mortgage free and have a very limited budget so are taking on as much of the renovation ourselves as possible - follow us on our journey as we turn an abandoned Italian farmhouse in Piemonte into our dream home.
    In this episode we start phase 2 of our farmhouse restoration, which consists of converting the old barn and stable into two bedrooms and a bathroom for guest accommodation. We start by finishing the concrete sub-floor and building a wall from concrete blocks.
    This was our first time building with blocks and mortar, there was a lot to learn but overall we think it went pretty well.
    What do you think of our work?

    Great to see how you are tackling all jobs that come your way.
    P.S. To make a wall structurally sound, one should anchor the bricks of the new wall into the existing wall every second layer? You might still correct this by using 90 degree corner iron.

    Wow, you two are doing an incredible job and actually learning as you go. Here in Thailand we are using Aerocrete blocks for the walls like you are building. Very easy to work with and won’t break your back moving them around. Maybe take a look at them for your next project if available there. Kudos and cheers.

      Thank you so much! Haha we know aerocrete blocks very well. But in Italy they are sooo much more expensive than the concrete blocks so we couldnt afford them.

    Respect the hard work and effort, but the lintel should extend past both edges of the door frame to distribute the weight/pressure from above, the way you have put it in has all the pressure coming down solely on the door frame. A bit too late now, but for the future, keep it in mind, keep up the good work.

    • @OurItalianDreamHouse
      @OurItalianDreamHouse  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the heads up. Since the wall is not load bearing we’re optimistic that this shouldn’t be an issue. Now that the mortar has gone off, the wall should be somewhat self-supporting with the lintel providing extra stiffness. However, in the name of best practice, on the next wall we will include a longer lintel to distribute the load away from the door opening.

    • @FatherVinyard88
      @FatherVinyard88 Год назад

      @@OurItalianDreamHouse Hello again, it is nothing to do with the wall being load bearing or not, with the way you have the lintel now, once everything settles over time, it is going to jam up the top of your door and make it difficult to open. Again, just a friendly heads up, looking forward to the next video!

    • @lindamounts2193
      @lindamounts2193 Год назад

      Good idea. He's right. With that much weight the lintel needs to be wider than the door frame to distribute the weight. Since it wouldn't be quite that big of deal, you might want to fix it now or have your door sag over time and keep the door from closing. @@OurItalianDreamHouse

    How is the wall being tied into the rest of the structure? Is it stable enough being freestanding like that?

    • @OurItalianDreamHouse
      @OurItalianDreamHouse  Год назад

      We’ve now built another wall perpendicular to this one that is supporting. However, if it’s needed we can tie them to the existing building using angle irons.

    Perdón que escriba en español, pero es el único que se.
    Me encanta los avances que están haciendo. Y la pared quedó muy linda. Lo que si no ví en ningún momento es que hayan puesto algún hierro que uniera esa pared con la otra. No sé si me explique bien. Esas uniones se hacen cada 3 hileras de ladrillo.

    It looks brilliant! I ask out of ignorance but how come you didn't butter the sides of the blocks when you built the wall? Do they not need it? I've never built a wall so i dont know lol.

    • @OurItalianDreamHouse
      @OurItalianDreamHouse  Год назад +1

      That’s a really good question 😊 We did actually butter one side of each block, it’s probably not shown very well on the video. We just buttered one side since the buttered side of the next block will make contact with the un-buttered side of the previous block.

    Why are you using a block to build a wall for structure? It seems like a little over built if it’s not for structure.

    • @OurItalianDreamHouse
      @OurItalianDreamHouse  Год назад

      We decided to use blocks because of their price. I get what you mean about a little over built but blocks are by far the cheapest material to use. Compared to timber and plasterboard it is almost a 50% cost saving.

      I'm Swedish and Edward holds a Swedish passport after living in Sweden with me before. So as EU-residents you dont really need that. We're not living in Italy full time, and after the main work on the house is finished we will share our time fully between Sweden, Italy and France.

  • @BenvanBroekhuijsen

    I would never put tubes or electricity underneath a wall. Now if something goes wrong, you don't only have to break open the floor, but also destruct the wall.

    • @OurItalianDreamHouse
      @OurItalianDreamHouse  Год назад

      There’ll be a junction box just before the tubes enter the floor/wall, so easy enough to isolate any tube that has an issue and can make any necessary amendments from there. But don’t envisage there being any issues.

    • @BenvanBroekhuijsen
      @BenvanBroekhuijsen Год назад +1

      @@OurItalianDreamHouse ah ok, so then you would just ignore what is underneath and put new pipes etc. That should work, and of course, I hope that nothing ever goes wrong, but I live in a building from the 60's, we've had several leakages already. Let's hope that modern materials last longer. 😎

    non è una scelta un po' esagerata e costosa usare i blocchetti di cemento forati per fare un tramezzo interno? quelli di solito si usano per costruire i muri esterni
