We support you Graham. I wrote the following letter to the cowards in Leith Arches theatre who cancelled your stand up show: Sirs Reluctant as I am to wade into the Serbonian Bog of the modern culture wars, your utterly disgraceful cancellation of Graham Linehan leaves me no choice. As a cultural observer, I was dismayed at your cowardly capitulation to the incoherent diktats of the mob. In doing so, you empower and catalyse the most base and predictable censorious instinct of the faux-liberal lunatics who now set the cultural agenda. Further, you abrogate your duty as custodians of free speech and you spit in the face of the enlightenment values of plurality and debate. When the facilitators of culture become the censors of culture, one can hear the canary drop dead in the coal mine, snuffed out by noxious authoritatian vapours. From my vantage point, one could not slide sixpence twixt you and the editors of Pravda. Surely you can see that your behaviour is anathema to an institution such as Leith Arches? Whether or not you agree with the puritanical zealots who demanded Linehan's cancellation, is irrelevant. The public expects a plurality of viewpoints to be catered for. We do not expect a monolithic, hidebound cultural milieu set by a new priestly caste. You and your book-burning ilk should not hold dominion over what the public may consume. Your role is to build and maintain the cultural stage, not to adjudicate what plays on it. By cancelling Linehan, you're guilty of nothing less than a shameful abuse of power. Expiation and absolution is possible however. Firstly, you need to make a public apologia to Mr Linehan for deplatforming him. Secondly, you need to discover reserves of courage to resist the hysterical demands of the cultural zealots, who, it should be remembered, represent a minority viewpoint in this country. In doing so, you have a chance to rehabilitate the reputations of Leith Arches and yourselves. Yours faithfully
I am so upset that a plurality of expression is not respected. I respect pro-choice views on abortion but I NEVER wanted that dilemma myself. I don’t want to tell people how to live their lives but I do want to have a sensible conversation about PUBLIC POLICY. Let us hope that 2024 brings more conversation and sanity. I am a liberal but I am not unthinking nor do I lack compassion.
PS Thank you for speaking out! I was thrown out of a bisexual group over this issue. I was out of the closet and marching for their rights before most of group members were born.

I'm from the US and have only recently become familiar with Mr. Linehan via Triggernometry, Andrew Gold interviews, Comedy Unleashed standup and this Spiked documentary. I watched an episode of Father Ted the other day. When Graham Linehan's name came up it reminded me of the time when he was just a beloved comedy writer. It's so sad what they've done to him for saying things that 10 years ago would have been regarded as utterly banal facts. Even if you don't agree with him it doesn't give you the right to hate him or ruin his life. This is one of the truly terrifying things about this, it's no longer possible to have reasonable discussion and exchange opinions.

Bad move. At the moment you have the option to opt out of funding Gary Lineker's new holiday home or paying for programming you don't watch or are not interested in, the BBC is essentially a (almost) free market model, if you want it, pay the licence, if you don't want it and don't watch it and don't pay the licence. If the licence is cancelled, funding for the BBC will be transferred to one of two places (both options actively being examined at the moment), the first - and most obvious - is for it to be subsumed into general taxation, the second is a levy on either ISP providers and/or sales of physical goods like TVs, smartphones, tablets, smart-speakers (and so on, basically anything that can play media) . . . it's more likely that funding will be subsumed into general taxation. Regardless of how it's funded in a post licence-fee world, your choice to opt out will have been removed - and now everyone pays for it, regardless of whether you want it or not . . . all the people crying out for the licence-fee to be cancelled are essentially calling for a compelled system you can't opt out of, like I say at the moment if you don't want to fund another Range Rover for some morning TV host you have a choice to opt out . . . once the licence fee is funded through a levy or taxation, you're paying for that Range Rover and holiday home whether you like it or not.
@davelordy it's not anything like the free market. You're required to pay the BBC licence to watch any of the hundreds of live TV channels. It's as if Sainsbury's charged you to shop at any shop. It should be replaced with a subscription model. Let the BBC sink or swim in the free market.

I'm sorry Graham, for your troubles. I live 7,000 miles from London and hadn't heard or comprehend that people can be so cruel and ignorant. Best wishes in 2024.
The root of what has happened to Graham lies in the quote by Bertrand Russell, "Man would rather die than think. In fact, most men do." All of the poisonous nonsense that has been spoken about Graham is borne from an inability of young people to be able to calmly consider what is going on and to then realise and accept there are other peoples and ways of seeing the world. To be able to take a step back and, with a curious and enquiring mind, think for themselves about what is actually going on here. I saw this descent so much when I was teaching, it was quite startling. In my albeit limited experience and observation, young people not only find it increasingly difficult to think, they are averse to learning. I do feel social media has to take the biggest part of the blame for this. It is deliberately tuned for sensationalist scrolling soundbites rather than careful consideration, which takes more words and thus more time to read. And this is a mere continuation of what the gutter press were doing back in the day. In essence, it is the same level of mentality and the same non-thinkers fall for it.
I can see that Graham came a little undone in the face of this overwhelmingly surreal and incideous movement. I can very much relate. Its so good to see the tide finally turn. Thank you Graham 🙏
We are all behind you Graham! I for one refused to put pronouns in my work bio, and would not be classed alongside a part time trans person (no less!) as 'ladies'. Shades of Little Britain 😂

Also on realising that he was guilty of falling into the trap of vilifying via social media those seen as being on "the other side", he chose to admit his failings and apologise to those he wronged.
Thank you so much for this. Graham is terrific and brave and determined, and that's a lot to admire.
Been watching the gender craze take hold since 2014 wondering if anyone with a profile would ever step up. And Graham and a few others did and I'm sure it's made a difference and helped others be brave enough to tell the truth. This house of cards will fall and I can only hope it wont be much longer. (We have self id and full affirmation only here in Victoria, Australia. Rushed through and anyone who said anything was absolutely vilified.)
I do hope the day will come soon when people ask themselves why people like Graham keep speaking even despite the consequences. Women and children do matter and we're so thankful to have him onside.
Really enjoyed watching. Cheers.
Jesus ! How much does the world need a laugh now? We need Graham’s rare talent ,brilliance and light and the few others who are like him in these ridiculous ‘cancel culture times . Reading Tough Crowd currently , loving it .
Obviously I don’t know the guy, but I can see the toll this has taken. I know depression when I see it, and it’s not an easy thing to get through. Wish you the best Graham
oh i think it's hilarious!
All he has to do is stop being a transphobic bigot.
Loved this doc, very moving
Just want to give him a big hug
What a wonderful man
Thanks Spiked and Tom
We support you Graham. I wrote the following letter to the cowards in Leith Arches theatre who cancelled your stand up show:
Sirs
Reluctant as I am to wade into the Serbonian Bog of the modern culture wars, your utterly disgraceful cancellation of Graham Linehan leaves me no choice.
WELL SAID!👏
Well said!
Perfect.
Great doc. Huge admiration for Graham. It's always interesting which friends do or don't stand by you at difficult times.
A good point. A bloke I thought was my best friend chose the week I was savagely dumped to unload his suppressed resentment of me. I don't talk to him any more. If a friend doesn't have your back in rough times they're not a real friend.
Thank you Graham and Spiked for having the courage and common sense needed to do this.❤
The more you speak truth to the approved delusions of others , the more isolated and tarred and feathered you become, the greater your integrity and character shines through
Some just end up alone
I'm from the US and have only recently become familiar with Mr. Linehan via Triggernometry, Andrew Gold interviews, Comedy Unleashed standup and this Spiked documentary. His humanity and dignity is consistent and his being 'cancelled' is...reprehensible. Please keep writing, even if the book signing becomes tedious.
Cancellation of the comedy show twice leading to the show being put on outside the Scottish parliament is a sweet irony
I've always loved Richard Ayoade. I knew he had supported Graham. He was dropped from hosting the BAFTAs ,whether that was because of all this who knows? Good bloke.
This is one of the truly terrifying things about this, it's no longer possible to have reasonable discussion and exchange opinions.
these "banal" facts are heavily disputed and are nothing more than bigoted opinions.
@@BennettMatsare you joking? What are you on about?
@@centerfield6339 quite serious. Graham ruined his own life with his bigotry. He has no one to blame but himself.
@@BennettMats but you've just decided it was bigotry. Like, five years ago. What if tomorrow we decide that something else that's been normal and obvious for thousands of years is suddenly untrue, and you can't debate it or you'll be labelled a bigot? Will you just do follow along again?
@@centerfield6339 When you attack a person based solely on the color of their skin we call them a bigot, when you attack a persons sex we call them a bigot, and when you attack a persons sexual orientation we again...call them a bigot. Its like you guys have horse blinders over your brains on these topics
I'm not ashamed to say that I cried watching this, the pain in Graham's voice at times and the welcome of the crowd at Comedy Unleashed made me feel truly humble.

Good call@@numberonedad
The crowd at Comedy Unleashed are bigots too.
Instead of cancelling Graham Linehan, how about we cancel the TV licence!
How would that do anything? It’s not the BBC who have cancelled him…
Lived on my own for 8-years. Never had one. Never getting one. If they on't know your name, they can't do anything. So it you move... don't tell them.
@@davelordy There is another model on the table...a subscription-based one...which you can opt out of...

This was a wonderful and heart warming documentary. Thank you for making it. Graham deserves our great respect and shame on his 'friends' and 'colleagues' who let him down. P.S. I always thought Norton was a c*** but this clip of him just confirmed it.
the way he was treated by his family and by everyone is heart breaking
Graham chose, very honourably, to distance himself from his family to protect them from harassment by trans rights activists. His ex wife's business was threatened, his children were subjected to harassment - so he decided that he needed to step away to protect them for a fight he had chosen for himself.
His ex colleagues and erstwhile friends are a different story. There are a few notable exceptions.

This could be his most important chapter. The point where he gathers support and is vindicated. He's not out of the woods but it seems things are starting to look better. He should consider it as an amazing gift that the whole experience has starkly shown who his true friends are. Those famous people that stood by him have gone up in my estimation.

@jackburton1455 Can you give me a few examples of this? I wouldn't think less of him for it. We need repentant sinners. I don't have a problem with the dialogue of opposition. I have a huge problem with a refusal to allow dissenting voices. It used to be that universities

I so admire and thank Graham
I'm sorry Graham, for your troubles.
I live 7,000 miles from London and hadn't heard or comprehend that people can be so cruel and ignorant. Best wishes in 2024.
The root of what has happened to Graham lies in the quote by Bertrand Russell, "Man would rather die than think. In fact, most men do."
All of the poisonous nonsense that has been spoken about Graham is borne from an inability of young people to be able to calmly consider what is going on and to then realise and accept there are other peoples and ways of seeing the world.
Thanks for this Spiked. A great watch.
We are all behind you Graham! I for one refused to put pronouns in my work bio, and would not be classed alongside a part time trans person (no less!) as 'ladies'. Shades of Little Britain 😂

Me too but I'm ashamed that few of my countrymen in the entertainment industry support him. They don't have to agree with him but they can defend him from the disgraceful attacks on him.
He's no hero. He massively contributed to the creation of cancel culture and set out to destroy other peoples lives just because they had opinions he didn't like. He's only moaning now because he got a taste of his own medicine. Sod him.

Yep. It's become such a documentary cliche. It should only be used when absolutely necessary, like you unexpectedly have to chase an animal, politician, etc.
