I did. Back in June of 1952. As a VERY small child. Behind the Fireman. On a Class H5a 2 -8-2 from Kansas, Ohio to Fostoria, Ohio . On the Lake Erie & Western / Nickle Plate. 16 miles through Amsden, Ohio & Jackson Hill to Fostoria.
I miss the Iron Horse Festival. I was only 4 when that train was run. Wasn't long after this that the city changed the name and a couple years later ended the festival.
I have a Bachmann engine almost identical. It can't pull much up a steep gradient and it doesn't have sound but I fell back in love with it after gluing some it's broken off parts back
This is a great video, very well shot and all excellent scenes. The in-cab footage is the best part, especially when Rich opens her up for a minute around 11:00.

614 should be in that line up! And, off the topic abit, but still C&O.... if UP can restore a big boy, why cant one of the two remaining C&O Alleghenys be brought back to life? There are literally over a dozen C&O locos surviving. How is it NONE of them run? Even 614 is mothballed (and Im sure, will be forgotten about). PM Railfan would be nice but there is only soo much money to go around for the projects, I wish some of them could be as for good news though at least 611 and the bigboy are comming back to life in a few years, and restoring an allegany, well where would they do that the loco is absolutly huge, and not other railroad has the facilities on hand like the up to take on the massive locos, it would be a mamoth undertaking but Oh I would love the all and all bigest ever built to return to the rails I think they are both inside from the elements too, so that would be good, and if they ever did try to bring one of the alleganys back to life well I would be soo happy I would problably drool or jump up and down or lose other body functions, lol, though I must ask if she is heavier why is she slipping the drivers soo often, usually it would mean more adheasion to the rails I would think
manga12 As a fact, all locomotive slip on occasion. Either due to mishandling of throttle, weather, rail conditions, and/or even locomotive conditions. Or a combo of the above. However, the H8's were not known to be 'slippery' locomotives. Their great weight was actually more of a hinderance in where they were allowed to run, more than the fact that they ever slipped. As for factor of adhesion, weight is a pivotal factor, but must always be figured against horsepower aswell. In other words, you can either build a loco too heavy to ever spin the wheels that cant hardly move, or one that has so much power you can't get her started, she is so slippery. It was always an engineering balance. Alot of variables go into design like axle loadings, weight of recip. masses., etc etc. Can't really explain it here. Just know the H8's could pull the stars from the heavens. The only two surviving are under roofs if you didnt know. I saw the one in Md 4 years ago. She looked ok. Sitting next to C&O 490! Another loco that SHOULD be operating! Dam what a beautiful loco!
I dont know I just hear that she was always slipping where ever she went, even with a great weight maybe even more so then the 765 npk that she was filling in for.
They probably were, #5's was a Ashton custom made replica of a Pennsylvania Railroad whistle. That's a whistle we ought to get for our #3 0-6-0 switcher.
I also saw a video of Mt. Rainier #17 using a custom 6-chime whistle, I believe it was a C&O replica and it was the same sound we had on our Hocking Valley Scenic Railway #33. Look up Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad #17 1998 and Hocking Valley Scenic Railway May 1993 and you can see how they sound the same.
I think attempts have been made for 2716, and currently they're attempting to restore 2789 or 2700. Honestly I think we need 4-8-4 #614 sooner than a Kanawha, because 1: we already have two 2-8-4s in use. and 2: 614 has more of a history.
They are restoring 2789, but 2700 is sitting outside of a museum in horrendous condition. It was part of some restration project in the 80's that didn't fall through.
2789's restoration is on hold like I said. 2700 is rough looking but the boiler is apparently good. 614 will never run again under Ross Rowland. His reputation is tarnished because of unkept promises.
I did some calculations for 2716 and the parts inside of it are not that old but also taking into consideration how long she was run during her time with the Fort Wayne Railroad historical society and they chose the 765over the 2716 and she was sent back to Kentucky In 2001
How many whistles did this K-4 "Kanawha" have? I heard A C&O Hooter, A Pennsylvania Railroad "3" chime as well as a Southern 1 chime in another video as SOU 2716
I'm believe all of the Kanawahs fitted with a single-chime "hooter" whistle. If you search YT you can find footage of NKP 765 wearing the 2789's original whistle. I'm pretty sure this is a PRR 3-chime which, I agree, sounds great.
@@Milepost93Productions they actually had the engine until 1994 when the program ended. They then sent it to Fort Wayne when they picked up the lease I do believe.

Bite your tongue man! Last time NS got a hold of her they put her in Southern livery. Southern NEVER had a Berkshire! A total heart stomp to true railfans! Shes back in C&O trim, she better stay that way! PERIOD!
PM Railfan Well, it's certainly true that the Southern never had a 2-8-4 class, but 2716 did look good in the black passenger livery. It's not exactly a "stomp" to railfans, but more of an experiment to see what a 2-8-4 would've looked like if the Southern Railway had owned any. Don't get me wrong, 2716 looks great in C&O livery, but so many other engines wear black. It wouldn't hurt to see her in the Southern livery again. You know, to give some variety to the 2-8-4 class. Seeing how the two operating 2-8-4's are already black.
Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society is this from a rail fan or was this something you guys professionally shot and sold publicly? I've heard rumors that you guys have a vhs out there of 2716 but not sure if it's true or not.
I would love too see a C&O Kanawha get restored we have Nickel Plate 765 and soon 763 and Pere Marquette 1225 and I think it would be great to have C&O berk restored since there are over 12 out there and at least there will be one of each of these railroads running. I hope one day one will get restored or 2789 at the Hoosier Valley Museum will be restored.
PM Railfan There are nearly 60 Santa Fe engines out there and only two run with a third being restored, all depends on money, manpower, and the knowhow to do this stuff.
If I'm not mistaken, she blows her C&O single note whistle. (Correct me if I'm wrong. That's the only whistle I could think of) And that 3 chime sounds pretty close to a Pennsylvania Railroad DRR 3 chime.
I know this is the original look of this engine, but i do prefer the southern look in my opinion. I just don't care for the headlight on the cowcatcher.
Great footage, I'm guessing it's been digitally remastered as well. All good cosmetically on this K-4 but the lettering. The fonts are right but numbers and letters were WHITE in the steam age, not yellow. For some reason museums love to trim C&O locos in yellow. I can only guess they do this because they mistakenly think the trim on the locomotives would match the yellow trim on the old passenger cars. Wrong.
You gotta admit though, it does look good. The colors of the lettering is also the issue with the last two surviving PM berks. 1223 was delivered with white lettering and 1225 was delivered with yellow. Eventually they all got yellow, but the debate on which is correct or better looking continues, just like for the C&O K-4 2-8-4's.
***** Pics of 1223 and 1225 new at Lima show 1223 came with white and 1225 did come with gold. However, both were the small PM font. Not until the relettering did they all get the large gold lettering. Either color, to be correct, theyd have to be smaller in size to equal what was delivered. A factory pic of 1229 shows by now Lima was using the gold - large font. Odd color combination seeing how they came with white walls and trim. I tend to prefer the last incarnation - large gold letters.

I still can't believe that there are 12 of these engines surviving, and not one is even considered for operation

+Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society BOOM!
Wow soon as I say it...
+Quasimoto7 That whistle sounds like an Ashton 3 chime (like Roots of Motive Power #2, Strasburg #31 and Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad #5)
Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society is this from a rail fan or was this something you guys professionally shot and sold publicly? I've heard rumors that you guys have a vhs out there of 2716 but not sure if it's true or not.
If I win the lottery someday I'll try to get the KRM to restore her, but I want to see her done up like an L&N Big Emma :D
Looks like you won't have too!
Funny you say that, cause they just dressed her up like a Big Emma. :)
C&O 2716 is getting a test run
Hope it’ll be back under steam sooner than later
I just realized the chuff sound is the same sound K&L Trainz uses on their steamers

Nice
Margo gru as c&o 2716
Now I know were the K&L Trainz enginesounds came from
& Now Ladies, & Gentlemen! Louisville, & Nashville 2-8-4 Big Emma #1992!
Great stack talking 😀
I would love too see a C&O Kanawha get restored we have Nickel Plate 765 and soon 763 and Pere Marquette 1225 and I think it would be great to have C&O berk restored since there are over 12 out there and at least there will be one of each of these railroads running. I hope one day one will get restored or 2789 at the Hoosier Valley Museum will be restored.
That's what I cant understand RoM, there's 12 of them out there. Surely one of them could be put in service.
PM Railfan There are nearly 60 Santa Fe engines out there and only two run with a third being restored, all depends on money, manpower, and the knowhow to do this stuff.
All depends on the Money!!!!!!
I can't help but noticing that C&O 2716 had three whistles at the time, how is that possible?
so this is where steve lerro from k&l trainz got the enginesounds
What whistle is on her in the early shots? I'm dying to know!
If I'm not mistaken, she blows her C&O single note whistle. (Correct me if I'm wrong. That's the only whistle I could think of) And that 3 chime sounds pretty close to a Pennsylvania Railroad DRR 3 chime.
I thought the 3 chime is the Southern PS-4 whistle she wore as Southern 2716.
Harizon listen to ANY audio of it on the SOU and you can tell it’s not even close...
Would you say that the Kanawha is slightly more powerful than 614?
With the booster activated? Yes. With the booster going, the Kanawhas outdo the N&W Js. When the booster ain't going, then no.
Yes most likely if she is rebuilt to factory specs she will probably out do up 844 or really any 4-8-4
I believe she could edge her out slightly, even with out the booster going, but with booster activated definitely.
@@viktordubowskii695 boosted Berkshires where possibly the greatest thing railroads done same power as a northern in a smaller engine
C&O 2716 in 1996
I know this is the original look of this engine, but i do prefer the southern look in my opinion. I just don't care for the headlight on the cowcatcher.
Margo gru's prr 3 chime whistle
Question, does she had two whistle settings or different whistles, or was it just how the engineer used the whistle around the 9 minute mark
I tend to prefer the last incarnation - large gold letters.
would number 2716 be steamed again.
who Like to see C&O 2716 all steamed for Excursions.
