      I don't like the way the trigger shifters are installed. Both the lower and upper lever on both sides of the handles don't allow your hand to wrap around the full length of the handle grips - fingers are constantly constrained and pushed up against them. This forces you to place hands nearer to the ends of the rubber handles which could accidentaly slip off if you don't hold on tight. Its kind of a safety issue, I think. But the tech at the bike shop could only adjust them a few centimeters and didn't really fix the problem. Also, the seat is hard as a rock and I'm likely going to buy a gel comfort seat. Bike manufactures do this on purpose to make you spend more doe on upgrades. I'm surprised that the tires which are a cool 27.5 in diameter don't have more aggressive treads on them. I mean it is called a GT Aggressor so maybe a retrofit is in order. I don't think the bike is worth the almost $400 I paid for it. The new Iron Horse MTB is far better MTB for the price except for the generic derailer which lots of MTB enthusiasts are now crying for replacement with Tourneys and the like. The low rolling resistance is impressive however. I got up to speed on the asphalt and the GT just kept on a rollin' round and round!!!!

      @EditioCastigata 6 лет назад

      I've an Arrowhead TT, too. Took some abuse, but still looks like new. Unfortunately I found it's not upgradeable to my standards, for example due to the rear triangle width, or lack thereof for 10-12s setups, and relative position of the cranks.

    • @forterierocks
      @forterierocks 6 лет назад

      Aluminium, you can't spread it because that will make the frame vulnerable to cracking. - I've given it a new chain and donated it to charity yesterday. ;-)

    The breaks being horrible was caused by the stores assistant lubing the chain and probbably over spraying lube. Or the bike being on the shelf in the store too long and the pads going hard after a while. It happens with both my full sus and hardtail over every winter.
    Chaindrop is another thing, usually it means the chain has come from the factory cut too long, or the front derailleur lower limit screw hasn't been screwed in enough to prevent this.
    Both problems would have been adressed and solved by a local bike shop for no extra charge when the bike is purchased.
    I know this because i'm a mechanic at a local bike shop in the uk. The only real gripe i know about these gt aggressors is that the headset cups in the headtube are plastic and need excessive tightenig along with heaps of grease to stop them creaking and knocking.
    Good vid though, keep it up.

      Regarding chain drop, I've noticed that cheap rear derailers seem to have weaker pivot springs than enthusiast-level equivalents. Perhaps that also plays a factor in repeated chain drops? Acera derailers strike me as perfectly serviceable for casual/broke riders, so maybe the GT's derailer is just defective from the factory...

No issue with breaks, no chain jumps etc. Don’t let this review keep you from buying it. Best $300 bike you can buy to be honest.

    I want to start off by saying that I actually have this bike, and have about 160 miles on it. You're right about it being a good dual purpose, because I've ridden both singletrack, and downtown city streets. I love this bike, BUT, was not at all impressed with Dick's skills. I wasn't dropping chains, and my brakes actually work amazingly, but from day one I had issues with the front derailleur. After I think three visits back to Dick's for adjustments that didn't truly solve the problem, I gave up and learned how to adjust it myself. Now I've been problem free. Hopefully you get everything set right, because I'm truly interested to see your opinion on this bike when it's working properly.

    Looking forward to see where this goes! I used to be a bike mechanic at Dick's before I could get hired on at a shop, and I also recently purchased this bike as a nice cheap way to see if I want to get into mountain biking. Fortunately mine was built properly the first time and I only did a few minor adjustments to the derailleur limits and tension when I got it. I really hope they can get yours working properly because I'd love to see how you'd improve upon the bike because so far your videos have been really helpful. Appreciate your reviews hitting an audience that usually gets left way behind in the cycling community.

    So I actually almost bought this bike in blue. Still want it. But when I got to the store, then next model up was on sale for $375. The GT ricochet 27.5 plus. It is a 2x set up with tapered headset. 32mm suntour XCM fork. Upgraded bars and stem etc. And promax brakes. I purchased it but left it at the store for the mechanic to go through with a fine tooth comb before I took delivery. He did and was I glad for it. Bike works great. As far as the brakes tho i bedded them in on the street like the mechanic told me. Still cheap breaks and need to be upgraded but not as bad as yours. The front will throw me. But the back takes a lot of force to work. Sounds like the rear deraluer needs on yours to be adjusted. I hope ur mechanic is a good one. The one at my store is. I think GT are great bikes for the sale prices. great frames. Good components for price when compared to other $300 bikes. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one. Just know some upgrades may be required for serious MTB use. Brakes and tires are in my future. But serious MTBers upgrade that stuff on their $1000 plus bike as well. Love ur channel. Can’t wait to see how this turns out. Also want to see the Colorado review!

    My friend just bought this exact bike to start riding with us. His also needed some adjustments, but didn’t have any brake or chain drop issues. For $299, it’s not that bad. A few upgrades like tubeless conversion, some better pedals, and slightly wider bars would make it the perfect entry - mid level bike.

  • @fordracerforever
    @fordracerforever 6 лет назад +3

    When I got mine some components were loose. Once I got them dialed in it's been a great entry level bike. Haven't had chain drops even on jumps, and brakes stop on a dime,with minimal squealing. It's a great platform to upgrade as you progress. I didn't want to spend too much on a bike because I was just starting out and I didn't know if I'd stick to it. Also my local bike shops didn't carry used mountain bikes. It works for me

    Man I love your video's. I have a GT Aggressor Pro and I think it's a decent bike (for the money). I had to take mine back to Dicks to get my breaks adjusted too. But other then that I been all up and down hills with no problem, no chain drop. It's a comfortable smooth on the pavement, fast on gravel and good in the woods. Climbing takes a little effort (or maybe that's my age). But as a beginner's bike this thing is solid. It's quite all gears drop with no derailleur drag. Before somebody runs out spend a lot of money on something they know nothing about, I say try out one of these. You can always upgrade when you learn more about what MTB's are all about. That's exactly what I'm doing. I think I'll get a gravel bike next. I'm thinking about the Trek Check Point ALR4. I wish you would review that before I buy. I have subscribed so you keep making videos and I'll keep watching.

    I just bought this bike. I haven't seen any brake or chain drop issues, though I'm a newbie rider and have only done some test rides on pavement. But I did have some weirdness going on where it would lose resistance in the pedals for a split second or so then go back to normal. I took it back to Dick's...the guy put it up on the stand, spun the pedals while shifting up and down, and said everything was fine. I still wasn't convinced, so I took it to a local bike shop. He took it for a test ride and tweaked some alignment things in the drive train and now it's working fine.
    I think that buying from Dick's is a good option to have during the pandemic bike shortage...and all the people I dealt with there were courteous and made every effort to be helpful...but if you have any issues you really need to take it to a good local shop where they'll test ride it and make sure everything's set up right.

    I bought one used for $125 3 years ago. Have a few mods like new seat, the seat sucks, grips, and lights. I don’t ride extreme but do go on some local trails as well as around town and absolutely love it ! It is very responsive steering, accelerating, and stops on a dime. I clean it and lube it regularly and when not riding it stays in garage. Was the best 125 I’ve ever spent. 3 years later and I’ve never experienced the chain coming off or not being able to stop quickly. I give it two thumbs up.

    I really love this channel! Plus the movement going on with the examination of bikes, parts, upgrades, and allot of the shortcuts manufactures take to hit those lower price points. I dont know if social media of the recent decade, has created the "perfect storm" hype market we have been in (not limited to bikes). To the point where we are now, every product (bikes or not) come with a formulated image and marketing scheme. Too often than not, these products fall short of their advertisements. Its good to see folks taking it upon themselves and coming to non bias terms and sharing it to the general public. Answering the age old question "Is this what it claims to be?" "is it worth it?" We need more exposure of this in every aspect. Sporting goods, everyday products, vehicles, homes. So many products are one thing and of one level of quality, being marketed and sold as another entirely or not even coming with it in the age old bait and switch. I am glad to see that you find both, good bikes that are actually better than marketed, and those that arent good or have been advertising one thing and selling another. You could do these videos with everything. Great video production and a good voice. Trust me my voice sounds like a power drill. lol anywho long comment ending with a Thank you keep up the good work Kevcentral!

      Chri630 this was to see if the store did a good job of putting the bike together. Compared to buying a bike from a L.B.S.
      The idea is that a L.B.S. Is better since they have people working there that know how to set up a bike unlike the average "Walmart" type place.

    I bought this bike and currently have about 3,000 miles on it. Nothing big has broken. I have only had 3 cassettes,and i haven’t really had problems. As long as you maintain it your fine. I have taken mine to trails,and i go on the road alot. As far as the “neon colors may fade” sticker,mine have not really faded. Everything else has been really good. I have even jumped it and have been fine.i have had chain drops alot but a chain tensioner fixed the problem. Only thing i have upgraded is lock on grips,pedals and thats it. Another thing is the rims. They seem to bend really bad if you dont get them tightened. The brakes on mine are the same ones, and they are perfect. So it must have been a cleaning issue

      The point of my comment was anyone can enjoy his videos ;) Also riders with more expensive bikes. Keep in mind, I never told you which canyons I ride. Could be entry level, could be expensive.. doesn't matter.

    • @MattePurple1
      @MattePurple1 6 лет назад +15

      Exetic Nah. If that was the point, you wouldn't need to qualify your comment by talking about the brand you ride. The lowest Canyon is several levels above big box bikes. You know it. We know it. You know we know it. You could easily compliment the video without mentioning your much more expensive bike. But you didn't because the comment was disingenuous.

    • @ItsExetic
      @ItsExetic 6 лет назад +11

      Why are you so salty about the fact I mentioned the brand name? Saying "I ride more expensive bikes" would've been exactly the same. The bikes I ride could be used, entry level or top of the line, it doesn't matter.
      You're completely missing the whole point of the comment. I'm NOT in the market to buy a big box bike, nor will I ever be, but I still enjoy his videos. That is the point. His videos are high quality, and entertaining to watch for everyone, including people who aren't looking to buy these cheap bikes.
      I think it's great he's actually testing these bikes to show what's good and what's bad. One day he might be able to make big box bikes popular. If you have a problem with that, fine get on with your life. I didn't expect anybody to take a compliment as a hate comment, but then again this is the internet.

    I've been riding my aggressor pro for a couple of months now and I'm not seeing these issues. I did tighten the cables to the brakes first thing though. the only couple of chain drops I've had were due to a maladjusted derailleur and I've been down a few pretty ruff fire roads. I ride it daily for a short 3 mile commute to work. Maybe the mechanic at the Dicks by my place did a bit better. Good luck with the next set up!

    Omg at the end that is the Nishiki Colorado Comp 27.5+, which I bought two weeks ago. The brakes didn't work at first on that one either, but because the bolt on the caliper was loose and the cable just slid through. The 1x11 drive train isn't bad, however the chain ring is pushed out so much that I get wicked cross chain in 1st and 2nd gear. The cranks are already bent as well, however I suspect that is because I am a heavy rider.
    I got this bike because the gt aggressor was out of stock when I went in. (I replaced a really old GT timberline that had the triple triangle, that bike was solid) Other than that it handles amazing, and the lockout on the fork is fantastic for climbs. Once I replace that cranks and my bottom bracket,I think I'll be set for some time! Looking forward to your thoughts on it, especially the asymmetrical frame that was necessary for the huge wheels.

    I own this exact bike and had it assembled by them in store. Their bike mechanic was some young kid that had no interest in bikes.
    I took it to a LBS because the front disc kept rubbing on the caliper, turns out the tire was out of true. They looked over the whole bike and readjusted all the stuff that Dicks had done wrong, which was a lot said the a lot said the LBS guy.
    3 months later and the bike is perfect, no chain drops, the brakes work fine and it shifts problem free.

    I pulled the trigger on a aggressor pro on cyber Monday with my rewards and 25% ended up costing about $300ish out the door (dicks was the only place in Polk county florida with bikes in stock). After watching this video and the update I figured I'll take the gamble. Brakes work great out of the box and mine had the mirco shift derailleurs. I've only done a few rides down the road so can't say how it is on the trails yet. I'll do that once I return from Michigan. So far I swap the bars to a wake 780mm, wake stem, raceface grips and added a rockbro 6.5 top tube cellphone holder. I also swap the brake cables to have a right hand front brake (dirt bike back ground). I also got rid of the front derailleur in anticipation for the 1X conversion(ixf crank set). I'm still waiting on my Rockhopper.

    Have this exact bike. Purchased 3 weeks ago for $500 brand new on special. It's perfection. Small note; get improved pedals asap, the stock one aren't that good and broke 2 days ago. You can get quality pedals for this for around $40 to $100. I got Nukeproof Neutron Evo (Electron) pedals for $55 and they are perfect. Good pedals are pretty important for transfer of energy and keeps you from getting overtired. When you can, save up for tire upgrades (the stock ones are good but can be much better) I had a Specialized Rockhopper 26 and the GT rides smoother, is a little lighter but the RH has a better front fork and brakes/cable system. Put your bike on your home insurance too.

    I hate seeing that GT bikes are now just another big box brand like the Huffys and Murrays of my youth. My first GT was a 20" '82 Performer BMX built from 4130 Chrome-Moly, that cost $500 in Reagan Administration Era money, and it took every bit of abuse a teenager could throw at it. Back then, GTs were like Ferraris, expensive but built to the highest quality standard. Now, it seems they're just another Pacific hiding behind neon stickers (that may fade over time.) At least I still have my '92 Raleigh Altimetric...

    "I don't think I"ve ever seen this before." Seriously? GT has been using the triple triangle since 1986 for God's sake. The best selling brand of the nineties, the only frame to win Trials, XC and Downhill is the GT Zaskar--which is the greatest hardtail of all time. For all you people lamenting the downfall of GT, do your research. Yes, they had a few rough years when Schwinn bought them out in 1999. But they never stopped making top end bikes. Look at their current racing team. Ever heard of the Athertons? Rachael won a world championship or two on her GT. What about Hans "No Way" Rey? He's the longest sponsored rider of all time and one of the greatest MTB/Adventure riders on the planet. This Aggressor is an entry level bike. GT has always made and continue to make high end bikes. I know, I own twenty of them. Actual bike people with actual knowledge of the brand know better. The new GT Sensor and Fury have been all over the news for Christ Sake.

    A lot of cheaper disc rotors come with an oily wax layer. No natter how hard you squeeze the lever, you won't have solid breaking. I always take new rotors off the bike and scrub them with hot water and a de-greaser. As for chain slap, some derailleurs truly suck, but there's an adjustment screw new the derailleur mounting bolt(facing to the rear). Tightening clockwise should pivot the derailleur towards the back of the bike to stiffen the front to back pivot motion. Check the chain length as well. You want the shortest chain possible, that will still shift through all of your gears. Good luck, and thanks for the review.

    Chain too long? Rear derailleur not enough tension (B screw)? That looks like a lot of chain to wrap up when you are on the small cogs. As for the brakes, rust preventing oil on discs not removed during assembly? It will be interesting to hear from mechanic. One day a week, you say?! Maybe that should be the take-away from Dick's and bike sales.

      Agreed. The chain has too many links and the derauiler on the front and rear are probably not set up properly.

    Kev, I fix bikes myself. Here's two things I'd check out:
    1) Chain drop: Could be a lack of chain tension, or poorly set front derailleur limit screws.
    For chain tension, try shifting to small chainring/smallest cog (worst case), and see if the chain i loose.
    Now, change to big/big and see if the rear derailleur cage still has any room to pivot. If there's lots of room, then you might consider removing one chain link to increase the tension.
    Now, check the front derailleur limit screws. Inner chain drops are typically caused by the lower limit screws being set too loose, such that the derailleur allows the chain to drop inside easily. To fix this you can watch videos on how to do so, but a simple way is to shift into the smallest chainring, biggest cog, and tighten the screw until the derailleur cage just begins to rub against the chain, then back it off a little. This is the most secure setting.
    2) Brakes: It's possible the brake pads and rotors are contaminated, but it's also possible the brakes were set up wrong. The tektro brakes seem like a single-movement brake to me (one pad moves, the other stays put). You'll want to adjust the non-moving pad until it as close to the rotor without rubbing.
    Next, loosen the cable pinch bolt and let the brakes release all the way. Now, move the moving pad inboard until it is as close to the rotor without rubbing. Pull the cable tight and tighten the pinch bolt. Use the barrel adjuster to adjust lever tension to taste.
    Hope this helps!

    You've never seen the triple triangle design???
    You must be new to mountain biking.

    My buddy got one of these GT Aggressor Pros as a giveaway from his work. He's new to mountain biking, but I've been out riding with him a few times and that bike has impressed me. He didn't experience any of these issues. As a few others have noted, perhaps it was just bad luck that your brakes and chain gave you problems.

      It’s all bad setup. I don’t think there is anything wrong with the concept of this bike

      AceTrails good to know. Thanks.
      Already have a budget mountain bike hardtail, think my next one will be a higher end full suspension. Maybe even a e bike that's full suspension.

      How is 820 better deal than this GT? 8 phase Acera > 7 phase Tourney, XCT > 3030, Mech discs > rim brakes, 27.5 > 26, plus this one is cheaper.

      I really don't think 27.5 are any better than 26's. Not much difference. But both look nice..
      I don't own either but both are really nice. But I'm a little guy so rim size isn't a factor.
      Im more concerned with the geometry and frame quality.
      My next one might be bigger.
      I mean we're talking about entry level bikes, right?

      I agree, there is way too much fuss about wheel sizes. Unfortunately, It is really hard to find decent brand name 26' ht these days (if you don't want to build it from scratch). I ride 26s, but i think 27.5s are right solution, better tire, frame and fork choices, better and easier to find wheel sets etc.

      same, my chain is all bent up now. and when the chain is dry it starts to overlap on the chain and cut into the bike frame

    There was something wrong with those brakes. My rears can lock up easily and I can get my fronts to pop up the rear on my 2016 Aggressor pro. I got it for 350CAD 260US before I knew a lot about bikes. I still love it and I don't really have any complaints, other than the fact I've had chain drop when I went around 40kmh downhill over a curb-sized bump that put me in the air (didn't crash). My next bike probably won't be a GT though, I think I'll shell out more for a more premium brand.
