I totally can’t understand this both my grandparents are from Belfast and listed in the US census as Irish. They came here in 1909ish. I think there was some mention of Antrim county? Either way this makes me afraid to research that side of the family more than I have, I don’t want to look stupid 🤷♀️
Honestly people saying they’re Irish when they aren’t is insane. I have recent ancestors(recent as in less than 200 years) from either Ireland or Northern Ireland, not entirely sure which as I haven’t been able to trace back far enough. All I know is my grandfather had family from either Ireland or Northern Ireland.
It is a bit ridiculous to tell people who grew up somewhere and call themselves something that they aren't just because of a technicality that you believe in. Researching it legally you can identify of either and it's correct. If her and everyone there call themselves Irish then surely there is some truth to it. It's like we in Canada are part of North America so we are technically American but we are also Canadian.
Literally had no idea there was a difference. Dont get why sourscha being so defensive about it either my family is totally irish. Not sure where though
You misssing the whole ass civil war that happened, which is the reason their separate, much like with the Korea’s. It’s a big deal when your from that part of the world.
Well, according to 23 and Me...

Yeah it makes no sense
Apparently Irish is a nationality but god forbid you’re not born there.
Northern Ireland was established in the 1920s, so at the time they immigrated, Belfast would have still been part of Ireland under English rule
