I can’t believe this video has less than 300 views. Your channel is really underrated dude.

Ha, a genwunner... Born in '98. Ha well I'm glad you appreciated it at least. I am one as well, but I bought Blue at launch and played it on my DMG. So I can confidently say its unfortunate you missed the joys of printing your Pokemon snap pictures at blockbuster and the early maddness and fun when gen 1, and 2 for that matter first came out. Good times. Great video by the way. Looking forward to seeing how your channel grows over time. Love the classic Pokemon content!

Amazing take, gen 1 deserves more respect and love really, I think it still holds up at least. I know that FireRed/LeafGreen and the rival are loved at least by the fandom now, and how Blue is seen as one of the best rivals but I honestly really enjoy Gen 1 and it was made WAY before I was born. I'd put it sixth place overall for me.
    1. Gen 5
    2. Gen 4
    3. Gen 3
    4. Gen 6
    5. Gen 2
    6. Gen 1
    7. Gen 7
    8. Gen 9
    9. Gen 8

Bro I remember getting through Rock Tunnel WITHOUT Flash when I was kid. I had to memorize the entire layout based off the rock walls and the ladder placements. I remember it took a really long time and was extremely difficult but man when I finally saw that light at the end of the tunnel and being free after being trapped in the darkness it was like getting to play a whole new game all over again. Good times lol.

To get to the "Mew under the truck" you can either trade over a pokemon that knows cut and not visit the SS Anne. Or after you get Cut fainting your party and warping to the pokemon centre then coming back when you have surf
    Really enjoying your vids :)

Calling your rival Tapioca, while you are based on gelatin yourself, is on another level of geniusness :)

I lost my base set blastoise to an older kid who manipulated me and it bothers me to this day 😢

I remember my introduction to Pokémon games… it was LeafGreen, back when I was in early middle school (Diamond and Pearl had just come out, and a neighborhood kid and his brother had just gotten those new games but I only had a GBA SP, and my brother had FireRed… so this neighbor kid just GAVE me his copy of LeafGreen). I remember choosing Charmander, naming him Charzy, and I vividly remember getting poisoned for the first time and the screen glitch effect made me think my game was broken 😂😭

Great video! I thouroughly enjoyed this retrospective. I didn't even start with generation 1, but I always come back to it. The unwarranented hate it gets is really annoying. Aside from a few glaring issues, the actual elements of game design that most players will interact with are pretty tightly implemented.

Thanks for another great video, Jello.
I’m a genwunner from Brasil who heard the mew rumor at my school in 4rth grade.
You can actually black out at the SSN so that it does not leave port after you get HM01-Cut. Then return there once you can Surf to check out the truck, it’s really there (but no mew)

I love Generation 1, but no more than any other Generation. I haven't played every game and I think Generation 1 has the best Rival and 8th Gym, but I don't think all of the criticisms are unwaranted, especially when there's a lot of older fans that are just as hard on future Generations (and the gist I get is that most people who hate Generation 1 only started because older fans never gave the newer Generations a chance and I, sadly, used to be one of those fans).
Dugtrio, Muk and Voltorb are sound ideas, but their other evolution family members are just repeating an idea you only needed one slot to fill (with Electrode hurting the mimic idea by not resembling overworld items and Voltorb being better off being Nornal because they never learn Electric moves and their trademark Explosion is Normal). Focus Energy and Ghost not hitting Psychic are major glitches that everyone ran into without trying (unlike MissingNo, who really is out of the way and actually a fun glitch). Even if Ghost worked correctly, only 3 Pokémon (1 when you consider they're all in one evolutionary family) being of that type and the only good Bug moves being learned by Psychic-vulnerable Beedrill would still leave Psychic broken to a heinous degree and Dragon is pointless for only having one family and the only Dragon move not having STAB. Not a flaw of Generation 1, but I can only see the introduction of Natures and personality blurbs in later games as an improvement that Kanto sadly didn't get to enjoy until remakes (but even then, I agree with the notion that Kanto being remade so many times is repetitive when Pokémon already has that problem with the perennial Gym and Evil Team structure).
On the other hand, Generation 1 incorporated the real world into its story and I miss that feature in later games. Even people who don't like Generation 1 admit the First Rival is better than almost all other rivals. Team Rocket and Giovanni as the 8th Gym Leader are great threats that are a little more personal than future enemies. Even if the idea of catching monsters was done before Pokémon, separating all of their monsters into Types so that sheer stats didn't need to be the only difference between them is a stroke of genius that Generation 1 can claim sole ownership of and forms the basis of all future games and even franchises unrelated to Pokémon.
I think Generation 1 has more bugs than any full-price game should have, but it also didn't succeed as a fluke (which is all the more impressive when it wasn't the first monster-collector in the world). Worthy of the gripes and not worthy of claiming superiority, but also worthy of the praise and not worthy of condemnation.
