Everyone and their Mom has a setup this or that OS video. The thing that sold me on your channel was your in depth conversations on why you were doing certain things. Please keep that up sir. One example that comes to mind was changing out the databases on a docker compose a while back. You take the time to explain the stuff that a lot of other video gloss over.

Thank you. I actually ran into this again a couple of days ago while trying to deploy a container. Then realized that the MySQL database the container asked for wasn't natively compatible with ZFS, so I switched to a MariaDB and it worked flawlessly. Definitely going to include that kind of stuff where appropriate :)

Man. So happy to see you back online. A lot of us have been pretty worried about you. As far as the content change.. Ya know sometimes I need more in-depth and sometimes I dont. But I really appreciate it when creators take the time to explain the hows and the whys and the whats and the context. If a piece of a video is covering something I already know, I usually let it just play in the background because you know sometimes, I might catch a little tidbit I wasn't aware of. And if not, I am still supporting my favorite creators.Keep up the great work man!

I admire your dedication to prioritizing your physical and mental well-being, as well as your family. Your authenticity and willingness to openly share mistakes in your demonstrations are truly refreshing. Observing your problem-solving process is always enjoyable. The MKBHD video also had a profound impact on me when it was released, resonating with its honesty and altruism. Wishing you all the best.

Dear DB Tech, I just want to thank you for your fantastic video's. Even though I've been dabbling in self hosting for over a decade I've only started to take it more seriously for about two months. I can't stress enough how much your video's have helped me with my endeavors. From setting up basic Word Press sites to my own dns servers and torrenting over vpn, from back-up systems to Cloudflare tunnels, security and everything Docker related (just to name a few), you had my back. With calm and step-by-step tutorials, excellent tips and great explanation. Everything I thought of, you had a video on it. Whenever I was completely stuck on a project, you helped me out. And if I didn't know what to do next, you were there with new inspiration. Please keep doing what you're doing. You are an invaluable asset to the self hosting community. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Sincerely, Thomas from The Netherlands.

You've helped me so much with most of my current home lab setup, and saved me hours of headaches. You explain things so well and I rarely have questions after watching your videos for installations or minor troubleshooting. Granted I have a career of IT as a background so the knowledge kind of "clicks" as to the why and how. I think it's awesome you're going back to the roots and explaining all the basics! I might even go along with you just to clear out the clutter and start fresh on another new to me server and to migrate to better solutions you've shared.
Going back over the basics is great practice for any professional can help you relearn lost skills or a better way to do things. Having someone like you to explain the the new guys and girls would be an invaluable resource for them!
Looking forward to the change in pace, and I'm sure many others will too!

I totally understand where you are coming from. I kinda jumped in fast learning as I went (quickly) to deploy my first server and then expanding and changing and migrating and not really understanding some of it. I would just ask advice and deploy then make it work for my needs. I am still learning every day and going back to older stuff to see if I can combine or improve and will soon try to cut back a little more. I will definitely make sure to give you the views and look forward to the journey!

So glad you’re getting better. Watching your content got me into home lab, and has really helped me with my mental health. I needed to exercise my brain after retirement, and watching your tutorials got me into something exiting and sometimes challenging. Thank you so much for that! It would be great to get into the detail of why we do something, I like the nuts and bolts of a subject, and sometimes just doing something without the detail is not enough for me. I like your thinking on how you plan to move the channel forward it sounds great! What you produce already is first class and you’re always my go to guy if I need to get something done, so I’m really looking forward to seeing what you’re going to do. It’s going to be an exiting year. And I’m with you all the way, I know it’s going to be great.👍

I do like the approach you are aiming for in future videos. A lot of YT videos in this tech space are basically recipe style, "take ingredients A,B,C follow three steps X,Y,Z, and you are done!". That can sometimes be useful if it quickly solves a specific problem I happen to have, but it usually does not teach my anything I can apply to other problems even if they are similar. I much prefer YT videos that not only address the "How" but also take a deep dive into the "why". I guess that's what you are talking about, so I am all for it!
One other thing I very often miss (and which ties in with the "why" question), is the "I have several different options/methods/strategies which all can potentially help me to reach the same goal, but here's why I choose this option over all the other options". This type of comparison is extremely helpful, but very rare on YT (for understandable reasons, it usually involves a much larger effort for the creator, without necessarily - in the short term - generating the returns that would justify the increased workload). I do believe, however, that YT channels which take that approach and compare different methods/strategies/options and explain respective pros and cons of all of them are, in the end, also the most successful ones (take Tom Lawrence's channel as an example. To name just a few, he's made such kind of comparisons for overlay networks, passport managers, etc ....). Those kind of videos teach me much, much more than the recipe style videos, because it's all about concepts, context and understanding different viewpoints (or, in short, the"why").

Man you are great, and the reason I run CasaOS instead of Openmedia vault. I really hope you are feeling well. Your guides are so great to me and they have explained much. I now have my casaOS setup, Wtih LVM volume as /DATA (That I figured that out by myself:) I also "tailscaled" my system with your video about that, and now I am looking at Headscale. Take a deserved time off.
You are doing a great job. You do talk fast for my Swedish mind, but it is on youtube, so I can always rewind.. Keep up the good work. Its always a pleasure to watch one of your videos.

I owe my setup to you for sure and I agree about youtube being horrible about presenting play lists. I have a suggestion that may help overcome that limitation though. You out a link to a blog document for every video and that would be a perfect place to put the playlist for a series.

Hey there, I love your content but I think you are too hard on yourself, I don't think not stepping back is a failure, instead it is an opportunity to improve and grow 🎉
I'm excited to see the new content you will create, thanks to you I was inspired to create my own business. I started a home lab and then it grew before I realized, it still needs to grow and improve but it doesn't mean it's a failure, it just needs to keep going and keep learning of every little thing with baby steps.
No hurry on improving, stay healthy, and thank you! ❤

Thank you for deciding to embark on "back to the basics", if you will. I feel that, even for those who are experienced, a fresh look could reveal something new (like new functionality or capabilities since original learning). This can help us explain things in real life to others by using your example (and referring them to your videos as well). I look forward to it!

Hello David - A great reflection that in my opinion is very accurate, sometimes we take for granted that the followers are at our level or above and we must always keep in mind that there are people who are starting in the Docker and Linux world and with little knowledge and they should be taught the way - I really hope it goes well for you - Greeting

Got casa os and have been getting to get nextcloud running correctly with everything it needs, using nginx and cloudflare tunnel, your videos have def helped. Im still having issues and whatnot but I'm def getting a lot closer 😅 last time I really used anything other than Windows was back in the late '90s and early 00s on dads ol tandy 1000 with the big ol floppies . I def like your style of videos, helps explain things in a way my adhd brain understands.

Granted, I don't think you were necessarily wrong in the past. Your videos have been helpful all along. That said, a little self-reflection is always a good thing, and the way you go about it tells a lot about your character. I certainly appreciate it, as I've also been in situations where a quick installation tutorial, without any reference to the hows and whys, left me utterly dumbfounded in the end.

I’d honestly love like a playlist or video series that someone could watch that would take you from like ok here’s a base Linux os here’s how you manage docker, here how you integrate home assistant/jellyfin/autogen/etc (could really be anything) but a simple series for complete beginners. I’m not a complete beginner but I haven’t seen a playlist that goes through it for beginners trying to get started with home assistant and docker containers.
