Maybe an off topic story but it is a tradition for the boys in my family to shoot their first deer with my granddads savage model 99 in 300 savage. Pop bought the gun in 1960 when my dad was born, when he and my gram didn’t have a pot to piss in. My dad, two uncles, 4 cousins and now my boy all shot their first deer with that gun. I live in PA and it’s “illegal” to put on deer drives. So it’s around 11am first day of deer, and I’m on the receiving end of my very first deer drive. The drive we were doing is called the three trees, for the three giant ash trees that grew together, offering perfect cover for an ambush. Now mind you, I starting shooting lever action .22 at 8, and thought myself to be a regular Bob Munden. I was all of 80lbs soaking wet with bricks in my pants at 12 so that 300 savage was still a bit too big for me. Anyways, I’m standing with my dad and I hear my pop yell “HERE THEY COME.” I caught sight of 4 big does and one buck making a BEE line right for me. My dad had his hand on my shoulder and was telling me to wait, wait...long and skinny of this story was I made my first shot at about 15 feet and missed. Then I did what I’m sure every hunter has done at least once in their hunting career...I emptied that gun and missed 4 more times, and the last shot I could have reached out and walloped that doe over her head with the gun. I was shaking so bad I couldn’t focus for the rest of the day. I’m 32 years old now and still shake like a leaf in excitement when I see deer in the deer woods.
Haha that’s a cool story! I used to shake like that when I was younger and learning to just “watch” them vs think of it as going to “take one” changes your perception. I actually would sit in the stand and study them, how they move, walk, look around, smell and etc. when bow hunting I would practice getting my bow up on young bucks and does I knew I wouldn’t “take” just to get better and quieter and practice to make me better for when the “keeper” came out. I just love the sights, smells, sounds, etc of hunting.
@@KoonTrucking man I couldn’t tell you how many times as a young guy that I would be walking into my stand and have the infamous snort and run from 10 feet away. Nature is truly incredible. I’ve had so many neat experiences it’s wild. Had two fawns come so close to me turkey hunting one year I could feel one breathing on the side of my face. Then one year I got anxious and shot what some would call a scrub buck...no biggie, but having to eat crow and watch two giant bucks come down and bed in front of my stand during doe season is a good way to learn patience....especially when a mounter buck is fighting sleep in front of me just like my dad used to after a giant bowl of ice cream at night. As I get older, I ALWAYS check for polish eagles (crows) in the area...they are nature’s alarm system...I’ve shot plenty of their family members to know If they start cackling, pretty much guarantees every other animal in your area knows something isn’t right. Every animal is a security system for the other guy...especially those damned tree rats that seem to fool this guy at least once a day into thinking a thirty pointer is just about to crest a hill.
Vinegar, gets the smell of damn near anything out. I had to shoot a possum that had been getting into a buddy's horse feed. I found it after it had been sprayed by a skunk. My buddy threw it in the back of my truck. I tried everything, even diesel fuel and the skunk smell kept coming back. I bought a $2.50 gallon of vinegar. Poured it into my truck bed. I let it sit for an hour or so. Washed it out and the smell was gone. Vinegar is my go to for horrible smells left behind
