When I was in school, I walked past a tiger habitat everyday and the tiger would walk up and make that chuffing sound. I figured it was his way of telling me "good morning".

Chuffing is a non-threatening vocalization. It is often used between two cats who are greeting each other, during courting, or simply by a mother comforting her cubs. It is also common to see captive tigers and snow leopards exchange chuffs with their human keepers in a way to express a greeting or excitement.

It does look very sweet, but chuffing when they meet each other is more like "Hello there! I'll be nice so let's not try to kill each other." I don't think newly-introduced tigers will play, although that is a cute idea, but in the wild they're solitary animals. Owners/keepers often make the mistake of forcing adult tigers into the same enclosure who hadn't lived together beforehand, which can be very stressful and dangerous, even deadly, for the cats. Even if they're well-acquainted, they can be quite aggressive/defensive at first when put into the same enclosure. This video shows BCR reintroducing Keisha and Zeus, who had lived together before and were chuffing at each other a lot from their separate enclosures. @@flyaround312 Oh I know. I'm a big time supporter of BCR. While most Tigers are very independent, They are still curious cats. :) The Chuffs are a nice greeting, but no guarantee of a friendly encounter. Still, Most of them seemed rather curious and calm. I was expecting Amanda to be very grumpy. But it was Jasmine who turned out to be the aggressive one. Needless to say, she doesn't seem interested in company. While Dutchess and Priya seem to regularly play with each other at Tiger lake. Through a barrier, but it is a very sweet sign.
As for Zeus and Keisha, It was tense, but I think a lot of that stems from Zeus' aging eyesight, and Keisha being very excited to see him. I'm glad they got along again. But I know it isn't always possible. Like with Chaos and Cyrus. They were raised together, but the reintroduction didn't go so smoothly. Chaos does not seem to want a roommate.

Even without personifying animals, it's so clear that they have such cool, intricate social and emotional complexity. I love seeing a chuffing tiger just because it's such a unique, positive communication (also, because I'm studying herpetology and not cats, so it's not what I'm used to!)
Animal behavior is honestly one of the most interesting subjects to study!
Alex the Cranky Bunny that sounds fascinating! Do you think apex predators share common ways to communicate as a means to avoid unnecessary conflict? I see tigers have sounds they make to indicate they aren’t interested in fighting, for instance. Bearded dragons do the “wave” that indicates submission and thus is a way not to get murdered by others.

Yaadie-boy ... They don’t know that they’re not real. Their reactions are exactly what I expected. I was more surprised at the ones that were greeting. Tigers are solitary and very territorial. What you saw is normal behavior. Since they were separated by a fence and the toy Tigers were not in their enclosures... there isn’t really a problem. Had they been inside their enclosures ... since they’re not being introduced and in the right way the real Tigers very likely wouldn’t have been so nice.

It was sooo funny watching the Tigers' reaction to the stuffed animal Tiger. Most of them were chuffing, which meant being friendly and saying "hello." The one Tiger was growling. And some kept running along with the staff member carrying it. It was amusing 😄!
Can we just all be happy at the fact that the cages are so big and spacious vs a zoo and how much happier the animals are.

Not all zoo’s are bad. Just the ones that don’t meet national parks and recreation standards subsection zoo guidelines. There’s an important standards that have to be met and most Zoos meet this standards the ones that don’t are probably illegal. I know that the Little Rock Zoo meets the standards. Not a single habitat is overcrowded or is uncomfortable for the animals to live in. The Little Rock Zoo frequently upgrades their habitats to comply with the guidelines as they change. Any zoo that locks up their animals in a small or uncomfortable looking cage is probably illegal and needs to be reported to the proper authorities.

@@comicgamerstudios2063 All these tigers in sanctuaries in the US were bred in captivity for the pet trade. How that is even legal I don't know, but because of it, there are more tigers in the US than in India. Alas, they cannot be returned to the wild, because they were never wild to begin with. Their instincts are not honed for survival, and sadly there's not really a "wild" for them to go back to. The problem we have is not so much a lack of tigers in the world, but a lack of places for tigers to live safely for both tigers and humans.

Also, I had no idea their habitats were that big! I mean, I knew they had plenty of space, but it wasn't until I saw Sapphire run across the entirety of her enclosure that I realized just how big they were.
the tigers get cages large then most apartments, also there's the massive vacation enclosure which is bigger then your average family home.

They aren't dogs to pee
They don't pee coz they know its a plush toy and not a real one. They generally pee on trees or grass to mark their dominance.

I think they may also have been confused to see a person carrying a tiger over their shoulder; they don't ever see that, much less experience it. They never see a person touch a cat.
@@tamarab5751 the humans have undoubtedly touched them before, particularly any of the animals that they've raised, since they would be fed and tamed by human handlers, and the tigers wouldn't be smart enough to put together that a human is too weak to lift a tiger, so they really wouldn't know what to make of it, they'd just see it as a weird interaction with a weird, not responsive tiger that doesn't smell right.

This reminds me of when my cat saw a porcelain cat statue, she tried to attack it until she smelled it and realized that it wasn't real.
