- $300 Top End Rebuild, Pt-3 concludes this little trilogy. In it we’ll attack the trickiest part of this inexpensive motor rebuild-putting the motorcycle back together. Next, we’ll see if it actually runs.

My book “Josie’s Journey” is a not a motorcycle book, but rather a spiritual tale told in the story of one man’s journey to freedom. However, Josie’s is not a flowery yarn, nor does it venture anywhere near the sterile cleanness or deep phycological thought of many spiritual books:

Hey Scotty, I know you're an Asheville fan. I live in Asheville. We are really struggling here. The hurricane has destroyed everything. If you were in Asheville, I hope you're safe. If not good. Say a prayer for WNC we need it right now....
Hey brother scotty, long time viewer here, love all your content, always!
Do NOT undererestimate your mechanical skills. they are awesome!! give youreslf, alot of credit, to rebuild, the whole HD, from crank, to breather, is a very tedious and careful job!!And you my friend, made that look easy, and I KNOW its not! great job, so far and thank for going over everything, as you did!
I enjoyed all three of your rebuild vids. Thanks for sharing Scotty. 👍
Good job! Love it when a plan goes right....Greetings from Murfreesboro Tn.
Awesome Scotty! Cheers from Vancouver 🇨🇦
Gotta agree on the boring and new pistons. EVOS last a long time. I did one for a guy that had over 100k on it and barely a mark on the cylinder walls, AND first over on them is .005”a hone will clean that up.
His issue was tired rings and his valves had actually sunk into the head popping a rocker cover bolt out when the top of valve made contact. No over bore needed and he’s still going after 7 yrs.
Same with a 107 S&S I got from a big Dog cheap. It had been thrashed and was burning oil like a pig.
Tore it down and it needed rings and valve guide seals and the valves lapped.
One of the smoothest Harley’s I’ve had, I put in a touring cam and slapped it in my bagger.
I have bore gauges and there was no taper to the cylinders or gouges. In pistons or cylinders, even on the 84 with over 100k the scratches were minimal.
The rings just lose their spring from heat cycles and wear.
If it were a paying customer I’d let them choose, but when it’s my call, I look at everything and decide if it NEEDS to be done or just freshened up.
Your inherent mech skills are admirable and necessary to live your lifestyle.
You’re way more mech than a lot of “ techs” I’ve met to be sure.
Keep logging the miles!
Youre quite knowledgeable about this stuff Majestic. So, youve also seen this ring issue before. This is the second time ive seen it.
@@scootertrampscotty yup seen it several times and I think it’s a heat issue too, either that or they had some bad rings, but what are the odds a bad lot would still be around several yrs?
Maybe it was just the supplier and metallurgy of the rings for a time combined with heat.
That was awesome! Thanks for the hot tips Scotty. I’ll do my best to remember them! Black Hills Mills. 👍👊
Hey Scotty...one of your best videos. Good job, excellent production...Dave G
Bringing back memories of when I actually used to do stuff. Think I'm having a brief moment of clarity😊
I always used a broken ring to clean the muck out of the grooves 😇
Happy Trails Scotty, thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Sweet dude. Appreciate ya
Love this one Scottie, good to see you doing another maintenance video
Great video
Like your fantasy glasses 👓 bro 😎!!😅
That's a good feeling when the engine starts up after a tear-down:)
Glad your ok!
Very good information it’s like I’m there with ya
l found it easier to remove the pistons & insert them into the cylinder's & leave the gugen pin exposed put the pin & clips in & then slide down to the base good job Scotty.. cheers from Down Under..
Thanks for sharing your story, I just did my rear valves, to seat them I used a drill and grinding compound, ( clamping the drill on the valve stem ) carefully turning the valve using the drill, my work space was a dirt ground it would make a mechanic cringe !! . Just love your simple ways like myself ( old school ) Harley is a glorified brigs and Stratton . Over thinking will kill most people. Thanks again learning a little bit at a time. 🍻

Another dirty biker mechanic. Im not alone!
Nice informatie scotty thanks a lot😮
Good informative video Scotty. Always enjoy anything you make. Hope all is well with your friends in Asheville. I’m about 75miles east of Asheville, we had trees down no power, no phones no internet for few days. But once we got back up and found out how fortunate we were to just miss the worst of it, we were very blessed. Take Care Scotty. I suspect your on your way south.
Thanks for a great video Scotty!
Good to know . Ride safe Scotty
Great video scotty. Glad you got her goin. I think they all use a little oil over time....especially when u cross the country....
Good job Scotty.
Good video thanks for sharing too much work for me I'd have to pay a mechanic
Nice job bro
I have never broken a ring putting them on but nervous as hell every time lol
Oh my goodness.
Great info Mr Mayor, thanks for doing it, hope to see you in Sturgis 2025.
Great video scotty this video will help alot of people, man Have a great day.
To bad i didn't know you were going to do a top end. I have a brand new stock set of harley brand pistons and rings just like the ones you have on your bike with the black Teflon coating. I would have just gave them to you. Oh well some day i will find a use for them.
With my 93 bagger i use oil too. There is 40k miles since rebuild and i was using probably a half qt. Every 1000 miles or so "synthetic oil". I changed back to conventional oil, running valvoline VR 1 straight 50 wt and now it barely uses oil. I think synthetic gets to thin when it gets hot . Conventional seems to hold its viscosity better stays thicker when hot. So for now on im running Conventional oil, cheaper too, just have to change it more often . My base gaskets don't weep oil anymore either with conventional oil.
Hey Scotty, first your not an idiot your a very smart personable guy and second have you heard anything about where your second bike is currently at ?
It's being stored at a friend's house. He's riding the blue bike as much as he can. He's said this many times already
😂 I fuckin love irony!!😅
@@theone2be33 yeah I know that, what you may not know is it was stored in a place in my state that a Fing hurricane just about washed away and I was concerned about the condition of it
I havent heard whats happened with it. Not to worried though. The barn is definitely on high ground.
@@scootertrampscotty cool man, you and your friends up there are in my thoughts and prayers, glad you got out of there before it hit.
You make it look super easy 😅😅
Oh yeah. Do top ends in in my sleep all the time 😂
nice video...ride safe bro
I hope your ok Scotty after that crazy storm they are a lot of dead from the storm just checking up on you.
I was in Arkansas.
Someone did a burnout at some point … great video series
Great video, Scotty. Thanks for the tips. Made me more aware of how heat really plays a huge part. Are you still thinking of selling it before you jump to the other one? Looking forward to you on the road and the next sight to see. What's the name of the tent you use again. 🍁 very best :)
Its a Wenzel Ridgecrest. But they dont make em anymore. The top cover is off a different tent. I forget the name. Both are cheap tents
Scosquatch🤘🤘🤘
Are your friends OK in Asheville?
No
Yes. They werent even in town. Dont know about the shop yet.
@scootertrampscotty it looks bad there, real bad. I just watched Sean go there twice with supplies. Some towns are gone. Roads are gone, power is down, no fuel, no heat, no gas, no water, no food, nothing. My nephew and nieces were lucky they had minor damage in east TN. They mainly lost trees and a barn or shed I think. The whole area we knew is gone...cleanup, bury the dead, rebuild. It's going to be a long time before they recover...God help them
Great vlog Scotty , the reason I like your mechanical vlogs , is because there to the point , done on a budget, & you do the job for a reason ,and its done ,as is , where is , with good advice , either from ure mistakes , or others , that have been passed on to you , ps , and I'm an evo guy also , they call guys like u in Australia , Bush mechanics 😃👍✌
@@andresinnett4319
Ive entered the league of bush mechanics! Thank u Andre. Im very flattered.
I would have deglazed the cylinder walls and put a cross hatch in them,
Did that in the part 1 of this series.
@@scootertrampscotty was wondering about that, so are you now still riding the blue evo,
I cringe when you say oops 😂
Un abrazo desde bacalar México.
Me gusta Mexico. Quiero regresa.
Naughty Scotty, always tighten head bolts diagonally 💩
U mean criss cross? On the old ones yes. Evos and probably twin cams, no. Not by the book anyway.
@@scootertrampscotty yip, crisscross,as for the book💁well…. Good content as usual tho.keep it up ma man👍🐒🏴
Scotty, Randall here from camp 5. What oil do you regularly use.
I've usually used Ams oil break in oil then their 5x50 wt.
The Guzzi is doing great. Another engine that's very easy to work on and repair.
Yes, parts can be a bitch to get. I'm from the being prepared crowd. Also I come home here in New Mexico with another bike and truck. The door is open if you come through.
I heard you open the bag the rings were in. Did you gap them before you put them in the cylinder? That is a mistake I would make! Details Distractions Anxiety
Gap wap. Gap is usually on point. Just like spark plugs.
Yeah. I show checking them in the beginning of the video.
👋😎
I’m curious why you didn’t pull the whole engine out of the bike to do all that work up on a bench instead of down low and with the frame in the way of a lot of steps?
That would have added a lot more work. In general getting a top end off isnt a very hard job.
Thanks! I’m the least mechanical rider in the U.S and have been learning tons from you and DMV!
✌😎✌
Hey Scotty nice vlog,I need to do the verysame thing to my 95 Evo did you get those rings pre gapped or did you do the gaps on them
I show checking the gap in the beginning of this video. Guess i put that in the wrong place. The gap setting allows for a wide variation and is usually within spec. Ive only ever had to file them once
You did I had the message sent when I remembered,do you remember which ring set that was as I. Manufacturer or where it came from
What’s about the ring gaps
@@robjones4662
I checked those at the beginning of this video. But youre right, i should haved moved that to just before installing the rings. Silly me!
I always went by feel never ever have i ever used a torque wrench.looks to tight using torque wrenches.
Yeah. Gotta have one for the head bolts though.
A machine shop with a belt on a table. 😂
OMG! I can't breathe.
?
@@scootertrampscotty Synthetic oil worth the money Scotty?
@@safeeffective385
I think so. Only have to change it half as often. 6000 miles.
Gorrillas in the midst…🙄🇨🇦
