Doom - as a 'Second Person' Shooter

  • Someone recently asked if there was a 'Second Person' shooter where you saw yourself through the eyes of your enemies. Since Doom is open-source and already has something similar in co-op mode, I thought it would be fun to see what I could do by hacking it around a little.
    It is unstable, buggy and arguably not worth releasing but it was a fun evening's project.
    EDIT: Crap - I think I may finally have made something even weirder than The Sky May Be...

    Incidentally, Psychonauts has an item which let's you see through the eyes of enemies.

    It's actually damn entertaining! Firstly I believed you just teleport yourself into the monster placement places.

      In coop, F12 can be used to switch viewpoints between the players so you can see where your buddy is. I modified it so that it would show the views from all the Things in the list, not just players. So it was a matter of pressing F12 until I found the viewpoint from one of the enemies in the second room. Moving the marine into position was hard and aiming was dumb luck.

    Not quite - this is fixed perspective, the best way to make a 2nd person shooter is one where you have a companion AI character that follows you around and is always just watching you or occasionally shooting enemies with you. Through their eyes you get to see what you're doing. Not sure how you'd aim though, because while they watch you walk around they can't exactly control of your crosshairs and aim. At worst you'll be basically "third person" blind firing.

      Basically for the purpose of a shooter, if it was true 2nd person, the narrative version would be something like
      I see the character enter the room and approach me, weapon drawn and he is shooting me.......
      Once you kill that enemy the narrative from that perspective ends and you loose that sensory input. If it was the only or last enemy in the level and the camera is dependent on the enemy being alive, you would have a black screen.
      So so long as you have multiple enemies, viewpoints could switch or be switched and you could keep playing.
      Now what you could do is create an avatar of the player, but the avatar has no visual capacity. Instead there are sensory drones that supply the player with views of his avatar but only from some point forward of them' never from behind. Angles and fields of view with respect to the avatar could be dynamic or static and switchable or displayed as a collage. The drones move dynamically through space as the character does, but are not controllable directly by the player they only allow the player to see the avatar they are controlling.
      So you could do things like aim still but it wouldn't be intuitive and would take time to learn to do because you would have to learn to aim off of external and perpindicular queues rather than linear and parallely and covergent queues. IE, you would have to aim at an enemy by judging the distance between the avatar and the enemy, and the relative distance and angle to a fixed point on the screen, adjusting for the angle of observation.

    seeing through the eyes of the enemy is still first person. but neato either way

      2nd person is a system based on not what your doing as the person your on
      But controlling the player that your looking at while being another person
