Got to meet him and even know him for a little while!!! Such a gentleman and pulled no punches!!! He was pretty much the same way in real life like a lot of the characters he played in movies and on television!!! What you saw on the big and small screens, you pretty much saw in real life!!! One thing he told me and it still sticks out is to never go by what you read or hear from outside sources and to try to get it straight from the horse's mouth!!!
I miss him despite that I saw him on screen and was privileged to meet and know him despite we lived in different parts of the country, but in my travels, I got to see him when I could!!! He was a good example where quality overpowered quantity!!!
Wilford Brimley!! You and so many others who are not with us any longer live forever on film such as movies, television, publications, photos, online, etc!!
I remember being hospitalized as a kid with newly onset type 1 diabetes and getting a laugh over his pronunciation of diabeetus. In a strange twist of events, I ended up working at Liberty for a couple of years, 13 years after being diagnosed, but he never came by our office to visit. Perhaps it was for the best as management treated people in my department like garbage and I was their only nightshift Spanish translator. I quit and went back to college to become a registered nurse that would easily double my pay earned there ($11.50 per hour is outright insulting!). It resulted in our awful boss getting fired within 1-2 weeks of my quitting due to no longer having required Spanish translators available according to insurance contracts. Dare I say parting was such "sweet" sorrow? 😆🍫🍬🍭💉💉
@@act4666: That was an awesome interview with Craig Ferguson. The last king of late night television treated Wilford with such respect while having a good time. Definitely hard to do.
LOL. Actually I remember back when I first saw this ad when I was 13 while I was watching the price is right. I just remember how weird it sounded when he said and introduced me to the word Diabeetus.
I'm just like him. I'm a type 1 diabetic, and I always check and watch over my blood sugars to avoid high and low blood sugar. And I tell you, it's not easy. It really isn't. Everyday, I always can't help but think how lucky, the people without diabetes are. They're the ones with the freedom. Rest in peace and happiness, Willy. You deserve it. You no longer have to put up with the (N)ing diabetes anymore. :)
Wilford was born on a sunny day in September as a vibrant 40 year old full of piss and vinegar. However, things took a tragic turn for him at the tender age of 45, when he was diagnosed with adult-onset diabeetus. Instead of crying and whining about it, like some kind of "big baby" as he put it, He never let his struggles stop him from achieving his life's goal of becoming the premier gruff but loveable elderly character actor of his generation. Nor did it diminish his lifelong love of oatmeal and complaining how young people don't eat enough of it. Ironically, it was his affliction with the beetus that brought him to his most memorable role, which turned into his true passion; informing people about checking their blood sugar and checking it often and getting their diabeetus testing supplies from Liberty Medical. As he would say: "Diabeetus...oatmeal...liberty medical! That's a pretty damn good life if any of you would bother to ask me!"
Wilford Brimley was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes in 1979 while filming the movie "China Syndrome." By the time this commercial was shown on television, he had already been diabetic for 23 years.
CrazyWaffle5150 - Now there’s no need for that kind of talk. Mr. Brimley doesn’t appreciate that. Poor guy just wanted to help the old people of the world with their dieubettus supplies.
Getting to 85 chilling on a ranch all while living with the beetus is pretty damn impressive. I’ve known a lot of 50 somethings that passed due to beetus. Wish they took care of themselves like Wilford B did. 🥲 RIP to all those we’ve lost to the beetus.
Great man. I missed the opportunity to meet him through a potential landlord here in Texas who was a good friend of Wilford. The large property had a rental cabin on a plot adjacent to his residence. He said Wilford paid him visits whenever he was in the area. I passed on the rental, though.
I just assumed he faded into the pre 9/11 pop culture abyss. I love it that people are still posting these old commercials. They made me laugh 20 years ago and still make me laugh today.
I wonder if he said diabetus instead of diabetes because people enjoyed it when he said diabetus. I mean I'm sure people have commented to him about it before and he just sort of stayed with it instead of trying to pronounce it the other way because people liked him saying it that way
Wilford is so wholesome and so badass at the same time.
R.I.P. Wilford , you'll be missed.
In Heaven he probably still talks to people from different centuries about Diabeetus.
Miss you, you old cowboy!!! Happy Trails!!!
