The unicorn overlord demo is basically the fully unlocked game with an 8 hour timer, and progress carries over, so there was no reason to wait. I also didn't find out until yesterday and the game is out and I'm playing the full game now, but I wish I would have started with the demo a week ago.
8 hour demo that carries progress into the full game? Shit, that's good, and even longer than some action games. I'll totally try it, thanks for the info man.
Untrue. The demo ends after the big main mission for the first continent regardless of your time, and there is at least one mission the demo won't let you take on besides that. The good news is there are 99 save files and you can just save after every fight and resume the demo at any point in that timer.
Reynatis is also a lesson I wont learn from if its mediocre either haha! Furyu games for whatever reason always draw me in, they do things in ways that just appeal to my JRPG interests whether they fully flesh out what they are intending or not. There is so much to work with here and all of these are on the must buy list especially if they have a physical release which thankfully most do. Thanks for showcasing these TKN!
I recently went back to console gaming primarily just for the ability to buy physical discs. I don't like the idea of companies going back and editing out things like Square-Enix did with Remake. While that change isn't anything I actually care about, it sets a precedent. I just don't trust video game companies anymore for many, many reasons. As for JRPGs I'm looking forward to, Dragon's Dogma 2 is probably my most anticipated. Visions of Mana and Metaphor: ReFantazio would be the next in line after that.
So excited for Metaphor refantazio, after soul hackers 2 kind of flopped for most people and atlus saying they wanted it to be a third pillar for them I really hope Metaphor ends up filling that role
I do hope they make more Soul Hackers games. It wasn't bad, it just had some (rather big) flaws and if they could work them out, it could turn into a really nice series.

Referring to the PS5, “I don’t really have the desire to purchase a console that’s in its final years of life cycle…” You’ll have to explain this one cause I really don’t think we’re anywhere close to the PS5’s “final years.” As of today, the system isn’t even 3.5 yrs old. Although the “average” lifespan for most consoles is 5 years, that average has been trending up. If something like the Switch can be stretched to 7 years, the PS4 (which I still seeing new releases) can go for 10+, the PS5-which spent two years in short supply, amidst a game industry that often spends half a decade developing titles-probably has many, many more years of life left before the PS6 is eventually released.
It’s interesting how Korean developers are also working on DokeV, a highly stylized Pokémon game. Noticing a parallel in their design aesthetic when it comes to graphics and fashion on the characters they create. It kinda looks like stellar blade was made in the same engine.
I still wait for Eiyuden Chronicle : Hundred Heroes gameplay videos before eventually choosing between these two, even if what i saw from Unicorn Overlord is really good though.
Even though we haven't seen anything yet I look forward to the third Death end re;Quest game which was announced for summer 24. The second game was still a bit rough but a clear improvement over the first and while everything else from Compile Hearts is not my cup of tea this series somehow got me. JRPGs with horror influeuences are kinda rare, so I hope this series doesn't die yet.
Personally I liked the first more than second. Feel like they dropped or changed too many elements that I enjoyed in the first game and it never had the same feeling of risk that I appreciated in the first one. Hope the new ones are a return to some of the original elements.
I'm not sure how I feel about Ys X, as I personally do not like Adol. I was able to enjoy VIII and IX because of all the other party member options, so having that removed is probably not going to be my cup of tea.
Its such a great year my three top anticipated are YS Nordic, Trails through Daybreak and Metaphor re:Fantazio there my holy trinity of JRPGs this year but thinking about 2024 were spoiled for choice on the genre
On a side note, I'm super excited to finally get to play Tokyo Xanadu ex for the Switch. It'll be out this June. Also I loved Shin Megami Tensei 5 and I really wanted to jump back into it so I'm also getting the SMT5 Vengeance release in June as well.
Trails through Daybreak and Visions of Mana are the two in this list that I'm hyped for. I really loved the Trials of Mana remake, and hope it feels like that in some way at least!
The only disappointing title is YS X which is downgraded from 8 and even 9... 😢 (I played Asian ver last year and 100% completed) From a diehard YS fan😂

Most excited for Kuro and Ys. Suikoden is a series I missed out on back in the day and became way too expensive so I’m excited I’ll finally get to play it.
Wonderful list! I share many of your picks: I haven't gotten to it yet, but Unicorn Overlord looks amazing. Suikoden I and II are masterpieces (that I've beaten many times each) and you're in for a treat! I hope to revisit them again soon, but haven't gotten to yet. I've been a mana fan for over 30 years, it was probably the JRPG (Secret of Mana) that made me fall in love with RPGs as a kid. Must-buy for me. You just put Bloomtown and Metaphor on my radar. Both look amazing! Trails goes without saying, and finally, Eiyuden is the one I'm most excited for. I backed it immediately, and if it gives me the feeling the original 2 Suikodens did, or anything like those adventures, I'm very ready for it!
Quick tip when writing a script or talking about a series that has a number two entry in it, avoid using the word too because it can easily get confused with two, use words like as well or also instead, because when you said it has elements of persona too I thought you were saying it has elements of person two, so while that may in written form it doesn't when you were just hearing the words
Such a grand year for JRPGs... There's also Shin Megami Tensei Vengeance, Dragon's Dogma 2, the Elden Ring Expansion... I hope you get into the Yakuza series through 0! As I've been playing Yakuza 8 (powerful GOTY contender!) there have been many times where I've thought about the great journey it has been from 0 to 8. This series has that great feeling of a BIG interconnected story being told through many games. Though more episodic than something like Trails (esp. with the first few games), the continuity still adds a lot of gravity and emotion to each installment.
Visions of mana DOES look like the best game of the year. And I own every Ys game. And none of them have captured me like Ys 1+2. I tried so hard to play them all straight through. I hate finished origins. Skipped oath so as to not play something similar to origins, got 9 hours into celceta, skipped 6 and 7, 8 was pretty cool, got maybe an hour. I’ll go back to that one, but Ys 1+2 were life changing.
What an exciting year for jrpgs. Can't wait for Ys 10 and Visions of Mana. Also, Dragons Dogma 2 in just two weeks! Great list and great background music (have to get back to Atelier Ryza 😅). Cheers!
I'm definitely most hyped for Ys 10 in english too. I already played it imported from japan on Switch but I'll be looking forward to playing it on my beast of a PC in full english being able to fully immerse into the story just as much as the gameplay this time!
100% - my PC was made for games like Ys X. Sure, it won't push the system anywhere near it's limits, but just having peak performance for that series is an unwritten rule.
I really like the idea of remastered versions. Back in the 80s and 90s when the internet was still in it's infancy and people still didn't share informations online, a lot of games success was dependant on good marketing. A lot of gems like Suikoden went unnoticed. Now with the internet people are sharing their favorite games with each other, putting them on the spotlight. So game developers can now create the reveniew they missed out on back then despite having created a great game. And if it sells well, the series might even be continued. It's a win-win situation for both parties. Game developers can get more money out of their games and even make a long running series out of it and players get new exciting games out of an old, beloved series.
Daybreak is my game of the year. Just playing Rebirth and enjoying it. Replaying Suikoden is also something I'm looking forward too. Not so sure about eiyuden but very sure about Deca Police. This year is actually doable - I love it :D
I picked up Unicorn Overlord but it has to wait. I'm currently playing Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen. Most of the games you showed here are on my list as well. I'm also excited for Dragons Dogma II and the Legend of Legacy remaster.
I am playing Unicorn Overlord right now, and it might just be the best strategy RPG I have ever played. I can't say for sure since I am only 10 hours in, but the fact that I could not put it down and nothing in it feel tedious is amazing lol. The world map you walk over gives depth and a sense of immersion to the game, unlike most strat games where it's just click a node. The combat and gameplay systems are the perfect balance of easy to pick up and fun/hard to master for that good strategy feeling. For the negatives, the story is kind of meh so far, but it might get more interesting. I kind of doubt it though since it's just a war story with just humanoids, so It's nothing special or unique. The other small problem might be there is quite a bit of enemy class variety, but it seems like it's just going to be just human who share the same classes as you. So it doesn't look like there will be any interesting, unique fights or boss fights. But again both these negatives are based off someone who has basically ignored the main story quest and has just run around exploring so far lol. Maybe shit hits the fan and everything get way more interesting as the game progresses. Regardless, the foundation of the game is enough for me to be thinking of it non-stop even while I am not playing it. Which is always the sign of a great game!
For real man this is year is stacked for jrpg it’s insane man. Unicorn overlord is great just from playing the demo I’m now convinced to play it later on. Like summer alone has 3 games waiting to be played for me being trails through daybreak, SMT V, Tsukihime, and Elden ring shadow of the edtree (ik the last two ain’t jrpgs but cmon). Then come fall there’s gonna be Persona 3 DLC, Ys X and metaphor rephantazio. Like theres too much I’ll have to cut down on which I plan on playing and sadly the only one I can think of is SMT V since I already played the switch release. Now watching your video has reminded me of both eiyuden and suikoden remaster. Let me just say this I haven’t played suikoden 2 yet but I’ve played 1 and from what I remembered it was already a fun game to me so I might have to pick it up again. And also with stellar blade I might have to look into it later too cause that actually looks pretty cool.
Ignoring the obvious titan this year in FF7 Rebirth, Granblue Relink is phenomenal. Unicorn overlord blew me away in the demo. Can't wait for kuro no kiseki and Ys X to get back into Falcom games
Really nice video for someone like me who likes RPG (and particularly JRPGs) but is not that knowledgeable ouside of the more mainstream titles and want to get more into the genre. On a side note regarding the PS5, the console came out in late 2020, taking the general 7years life span of consoles and the pandemic into account i wouldn't be surprised if the next generation come out in 2028. But i understand not wanting to buy a console specifically for a couple games though.
I only have 4 games on must play list for this year: Persona 3 Reload, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Trails Through Daybreak, and Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance (I never played the original switch version, heard it ran sluggish on the hardware so I held out for a possible playstation port). I want to try and make some headway on my backlog this year with XC3 and the Ys games taking the focus. That's the only reason Ys X isn't on that must play list, I've only played Ys IX before and I want to see how many of the previous games I can get through
I always wanted to get into YS, I’m LOVING the style and the ship combat has me hooked. Would I have to play the first couple considering this game seems to be after YS 2? Or could I get into this one first since it’s an early adventure for the MC?
They're pretty much all standalone games with some references to prior titles here and there in later canonical titles. But they don't really go beyond references for the most part, so you're fine to start basically anywhere (though I'd say don't start with Ys IX as that has more connections to the past games than the rest).
This should be very interesting to me as I normally don't keep up much with upcoming game. Got too much to play already. I say that, but I am actually aware of a high number of the games in this list. I am very excited for Visions of Mana. The Trials of Mana remake was a great comeback for the series, and I hope that can keep that rolling. Personally I didn't like Suikoden 1 that much, so I can't say I'm super excited for the remasters or Eiyuuden. But I've always meant to give the series another shot, so I am cautiously optimistic. I've said before I'm so far behind in Trails that I don't get excited for new entries. But I do intend to play through Zero and Azure this year. Cards RPG is one I actually had not heard of. But I am interested - I like deckbuilding when it isn't rogulike. Definitely getting Stellar Blade *if* it comes to PC one day. And oh man, I cannot wait for Ys X. Probably my favorite JRPG series going right now what with the latest Atelier games dropping the ball hard IMO. The rest I don't think I'm all that interested in. Maybe the Furyu game, but they disappoint me every time.
bloody hell, this is gonna fill up my backlog somewhat, looking forward to Daybreak and Ys X. Heres to hoping that Final Fantasy Rebirth comes to PC (Unbroken hopefully) along with Stellar Blade.
Hey man, you need to play FF7 Rebirth. I hope it comes to PC soon so you can play it but that is the best Final Fantasy game since FF10. It has everything that makes Final Fantasy special and then some. It’s got the highest rating in Metacritic for any game this year and is imo my GOTY as nothing is touching this. Anyways keep making awesome vids man
Have you ever played the inazuma eleven games? As a fellow football and jrpg fan, seems like a no brainer. I only bring it up as a new game in the series is potentially coming this year.
I find it interesting that Reynatis looks like a kingdom hearts and TWEWY game, it feels like Furyu has a dart board of game series that people like. I fully expect next year they will announce Ethier a Tales of like game or a FE like game.
DAYBREAK DAYBREAK DAYBREAK!!! A-ahem! Yeah, Trails Through Daybreak is THE JRPG that I'm looking forward to playing this year and most likely will be the GOTY for me even among all the banger JRPG's we're getting this year. I just love the Trails series and something tells me I'll love this one just like the others. Hmm, MAYBE I'll try Stellar Blade. It looks fun but the story being really short and it giving me some Souls like vibes thus super difficult is worrying me. Of course Mario Thousand Year Door is a childhood classic for me so I'll probably cop that one too, if not Day 1 definitely one day after. The next Neptunia title that's coming out soon is another JRPG I'm excited to play. Been with Nep Nep since Day 1 and I've always loved her and her friends wacky adventures and antics so I'm ready for more! ^_^
14:28 Not the main topic, but saying the PS5 is in its "final years" is really strange. I get not wanting to buy a system for an exclusive. If you had just left it at that, I'm with you, 100%. I don't maintain a gaming PC anymore because it's too expensive (a GPU in the US costs about as much as a whole console) and there are fewer games released exclusively for Windows or Steam that interest me. Declaring that a console, which is not even 3.5 years old -- and hasn't even been readily available for more than 2 years -- is in its twilight... just... what? The PS4 is still being actively manufactured, sold, and supported over 10 years after its release. Switch is 7 years old, going on 8 with no replacement announced. At worst, PS5 (and, by extension, Xbox Series) is mid product cycle.
Smt successor (waiting for a switch release finger cross) Stella blade (ah yes peak pov) Paper mario gamecube prices plummet like the crash of a certain market, joke aside pre order already Unicorn overlord LE (click) ❤

I feel the same way. Too many games in backlog, now FF7 Rebirth and soon Stellar Blade and most of these!
I will be dead by the time I get through mine

Looking forward to Daybreak, Metaphor, and Ys X!
I’m really excited for July.
I get to get into the Calvard Ark of Trails through Daybreak.
Wonderful list! I share many of your picks:
I haven't gotten to it yet, but Unicorn Overlord looks amazing.
Wait ys 10 coming out this year in english 👀
Indeed it is, got announced last month!
Ooooooooo I thought it was gonna be released next year in english.
Cheers!
Phew....2024 is just stacking more and more on the backlog. But thats not a bad thing!
I am really looking forward to know more about Towers of Aghasba. Can't wait for this release
Bloomtown looks so good. Another that I'm quite hype for this year it's "SacriFire". :)
Whenever something has "A different xyz" I instantly feel it's gonna end up being very samey.
That being said, Bloomtown looks very neat.
11:16 omg they have a name???!!! I’ve never knew who was the name behind octopath traveler, but now I do! “Acquire”
Daybreak is my game of the year. Just playing Rebirth and enjoying it. Replaying Suikoden is also something I'm looking forward too. Not so sure about eiyuden but very sure about Deca Police. This year is actually doable - I love it :D
I pre-ordered Stellar Blade. I wanted it since it was still called Project Eve. I'm getting Nordics, too.
My anticipated game this year is Kai no Kiseki, hopefully Falcom will give us updates this month
quite the renaissance for jrpgs not 2016 2017 level but we eating good
I picked up Unicorn Overlord but it has to wait.
Always a good sign when you can't put a game down!
I really hope that Ys have a online/mmorpg style game. It is best played with coop. Having vast amount of characters
I'm also waiting for Reverse Collapse, the steam fest demo was pretty good.
I forgot about this one. Thankfully it's still on my wish list.
is the BG music from Atelier Ryza?
Level 5 really s*it the bed with the second Ni No Kuni game. I hope Deca is what we all know it has the potential to be!
Damn, no mention of Versus XIII or Verum Rex in the pitch for Reynatis? That took some restraint on your part
This game list makes my backlog even more daunting, but I'm excited to dive into each title...😂
What Ys game best for beginner? This 10 I could play since it's prequel and reboot?
Some people are saying the localizers took some liberties with Unicorn Overlord. Does anyone know if that's true?
Did I missed sand land? The latest trailer and gameplay teaser change my impression in a good way.
What was the game in the intro?
Super excited for Ys X Nordics! Already pre-ordered one for switch and for ps5
Bloomtown looks pretty great and I never heard of it.
I have still not processed that Murayama passed away on the eve of Hundred Heroes. It is such a tragedy.
I'm not sure if Stellar Blade fits in this list but I'm glad you included it 😅 Definitely one of my most anticipated titles
Including this game and not talking about FFVII rebirth is crazy to me. Rebirth is such an amazing PS5 exclusive... nothing in common with remake.
@@yohonet Meh, I personally couldn't care less for a game riddled with so much unnecessary censorship
Ps5 in its final years...we're going on year 4 it's still got many years to go. Where is this info coming from
Yeah if that was true I’d be very upset
Ys are all mostly stand alone adventures so you shouldn’t really have any issues jumping in anywhere in the series.
They're pretty much all standalone games with some references to prior titles here and there in later canonical titles. But they don't really go beyond references for the most part, so you're fine to start basically anywhere (though I'd say don't start with Ys IX as that has more connections to the past games than the rest).
This year is going to be full of adventures
That background music is from a Trails game, correct? Which one specifically?
Check the description for music.
Bloomtown has a Mother3 vibe to it - Definitely looking forward to that one!
Im still wrapped up with Infinite Wealth but Unicorn Overlord will he the next man up for sure
I haven't, but I have heard of the series. I've never really paid it much thought though outside of a passing glance.
seems like another good year for jrpgs
I find it interesting that Reynatis looks like a kingdom hearts and TWEWY game, it feels like Furyu has a dart board of game series that people like. I fully expect next year they will announce Ethier a Tales of like game or a FE like game.
It definitely feels like that, Furyu have a knack of making games that 'look' interesting. When it actually comes out though, it's 50/50 at best.
@@TheKisekiNut eh I liked Caligula, monark, crystar, they were solid. Haven't tried trinity trigger yet.
Btw Reverse collapse code name bakery is releasing on March 21/22
Suikoden und Suikoden spritual successor go!
I really can’t wait for Eiyuden Chronicle and the Suikoden Remasters.
…on that note, RIP Yoshitaka Murayama.
Looking forward for Falcom year 2024 and happy 2024 man.
When is Oddity coming out?
...WHEN? T_T
Suikoden remaster lets go 😊
Smt successor (waiting for a switch release finger cross)
Stella blade (ah yes peak pov)
Paper mario gamecube prices plummet like the crash of a certain market, joke aside pre order already
Unicorn overlord LE (click) ❤
